Yea that song is a masterpiece. Their ability to take some riffs and arrange into something so incredible and Cliffs roaring monstrous bass in the highlight to that song as is Kirk's melody leads!

Ktulu is my fav to listen to live. Cliff and Rob always shred on that song, and it's amazing. how it hasn't been featured in a movie yet is ridiculous

My intro to Metallica was through S&M, and the song No Leaf Clover struck a chord with me. It will always be my favorite tune for that reason.
Yes! I remember my middle school teacher playing No Leaf Clover, and it just took my breath away. That's how I discovered Metallica.
Creeping Death, Four Horseman, Dyers Eve. Those are my top 3. So many of theirs songs could be too 3 though. One of the best catalogues in music.

Hard to narrow down to just one song. Here’s my personal favorites: Orion, Fight Fire with Fire, Fade to Black, One and Master Of Puppets.
Those are solid choices.

personally, Ride the Lightning for that sick intro and hard hitting downpicked riff following it, one of the greatest solos Kirk has written lasting a staggering 1:20 minutes in the song followed by some of the sickest rhythm riffs, the mustaine's riff and the 84' vocals telling of a convict being executed is just FULL ON metal
i can go on for days talking about that and The Thing That Should Not Be, Four Horsemen, Blackened and others, and i also like the Fade to Black, Sanitarium, AJFA and To Live is to Die and Struggle Within and Enter Sandman and God That Failed and Bleeding Me and Mama Said and so much more

I fully believe their best recorded song is No Leaf Clover. It's a smooth and catchy song, they had absolutely great production (no previous versions) and it was written and recorded with Michael Kamen and the Orchestra! As far as what is "signature" Metallica, yeah, it's obviously not. But in simple terms of recorded music, I think no other song from them touches it.
King Nothing is my favorite. I love the meaning behind it, and it’s super heavy.
Harvester of Sorrow for me. I didn't discover it until well after my musical taste was set in stone, but I was instantly able to pick out how some of my favorite songs feel directly influenced by Harvester. The Binge and Purge version... Perfection!
Leper Messiah is such a powerful song
It's a tough choice.. One, Bleeding Me, My friend of misery, and The day that never comes!
My favorite Metallica song changes with my mood and it could be anything from Kill 'Em All to Hardwired but last week I listed to Wherever I May Roam for the first time in years and that song is absolutely killer. Great song to play loud in your car.
My favorite Metallica song is Whiplash. Especially since the lead-in track is the amazing bass solo by Cliff, (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth. Such a great one-two punch of awesomeness.
My Friend of Misery, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Battery, The Unnamed Feeling, The Unforgiven, Disposable Heroes, The Four Horsemen, No Leaf Clover, Outlaw Torn, Orion, Until it Sleeps, Bleeding Me, The Thing That Should Not Be, -Human, to name just a few of my favourites.
It's fun to listen to a video and nod along with every answer approvingly.
One. I remember Christmas of 2008 when I got Guitar Hero 3, and I was playing through while my dad listened to the music, we both loved it, and when i finally played One, it was the first Metallica song I'd heard, and when my father had heard the intro chords he started tearing up, the song meant and still means so much to him, everytime I hear it, I always think of that christmas of '08, and me and my dad having a great time. Will forever be my #1 Metallica, and maybe overall hard rock song thanks to him.

Ronnie Rising Medley is amazing. It's the tribute song they did to Ronnie Dio. Otherwise the version of Master of Puppets they did for Through the Never. I also love No Leave Clover

entire ride the lighting album is part of my soul since early 90s, its hard to choose a favourite song but if i had to it would be fade to black. then there is -the thing that should not be (puppets).. im amazed no one has mentioned that song.. probably their heaviest song
That's a tough one. I always used to say Creeping Death was mine. But One, Orion, MoP, Trapped Under Ice and Disposable Heroes are my honorable mentions.

The message behind that song is very prevalent in todays government. “Freedom of speech is words that they will bend”, “freedom of choice is made for you”, “freedom with their exceptions”
@@ArmyOfNVA yes it is it makes more sense now than it did in 1988 that is the sign of a true classic song. It's timeless. 35 years old now and as relevant as ever. I love the justice album that is my favorite album. Blackened, justice for all, eye of the beholder, shortest straw, Frayed ends are all great and I haven't even mentioned dyers eve or harvester or even one for that matter they're all great lol. Justice with puppets barely behind it and lightning barely being puppets.
The Day That Never Comes is my favourite. Some honourable mentions that I've not seen many people mention: King Nothing, Murder One, ...And Justice for All and The Thing That Should Not Be. They did some questionable things with Load, Reload, and St Anger, but I still like those albums overall. Their consistency for writing excellent songs is astounding. They're also the band that got me into metal, so they'll always hold a special place for me.
These are mine in chronological order album wise: Metal Militia, Creeping Death, Leper Messiah, Harvester of Sorrow, The God That Failed.
Personal faves - Blackened, Dyers Eve, Disposable Heroes, All Nightmare Long, DTOM, Spit Out The Bone, Ride The Lightning, Orion
Master of Puppets. The whole album is awesome. Not much between MOP and Ride the Lightning ⚡️ The first 3 Albums are all great. The instrumentals are great. The cover albums/EPs always have cool interpretations, especially the first Garage Days. Green Hell/Last Caress, Am I Evil ?, Breadfan etc.
Over the course of the last 25+ years I’ve been listening to Metallica, these are the top 5 songs I find myself listening to more than any other:
1. Blackened
2. Creeping Death
3. Outlaw Torn
4. Master of Puppets
5. The Memory Remains.
Other contenders are

I think objectively, ALL things considered including popularity and their effect on the rest of music in general, you can say either Master of Puppets, or Enter Sandman. I definitely have soft spots for leper messiah, sanitarium, every song on RTL lol... harvester of sorrow, the god that failed, of wolf and man...

I choose between four songs, 1. For whom the Bell tolls, 2. Orion, 3. Fade to black, 4. The Four horsemen. I think I go for The Four horsemen, even though For whom the Bell tolls is amazing.
Orion and Four Horsemen are way underrated. Those are both in my top five.

Death Magnetic is amazing!
The only thing that drags Death Magnetic down is the production. There are excellent remixes by skilled youtubers that capture a more clear, warm approach. Less loudness, less abrasive. The actual songs are a brilliant 'midway point" between Justice and Black Album. It could have been released in 1990, and if it was, the album would be regarded as another classic from them from that time. 👍 Broken Beat and Scarred, All nightmare Long, My Apocalypse. They could easily have been on the 80s albums.

It's hard to pick the greatest but my favourite has got to be Creeping Death.
RTL was the first album of theirs I ever bought when I was really into Maiden back in the 80's.
Didn't really get the other songs that much or thrash metal in general but when that song came on, that was it for me.
It had the similar Maiden chord progressions but way heavier.
Great song to open any show.

In part for sentimental reasons, since it was the first Metallica song I ever heard when I bought the "Master of Puppets" club on cassette tape 37 years ago (!), I'll go with *Battery*
My favorite is Wherever I May Roam is my absolute go to. But I love Bleeding Me and Hero for a Day and obviously Fuel, it’s a gym song. Interesting everyone else choosing and really young too.

Personal favorite is Fuel (I popped when somebody mentioned that) but I think One is their best song.

I like that song alot I wouldn't put it near the top of the mountain but it is great for sure and I respect your opinion on that. Good to be different. I'd probably have to say blackened gun to my head having to pick one. Justice is my fav album followed by master just behind it and then lightning just behind it. The last two albums are very good some of the best shit they've done since justice and I bet the newest album will follow suit it seems to have the same style.

That’s such a loaded question since they have so many great songs, but Enter Sandman was the first song I ever heard and the first I learned on guitar so that song has always had a special place in my heart. But honestly, I think that I’ll have to say that Master of Puppets because of just how fucking hard those riffs go (definitely some of James’s best imo) and its absolutely legendary status of one of the greatest rock/metal albums of all time. Not to mention its recent resurgence in Stranger Things, which was really cool

One. The very first Metallica song I heard. 34 years on, it's still the best imo. Their Stairway to Heaven.
as a bass player, I lean towards Call of Ktulu and Orion. RTL album is a perfect album to me, so the title song is my pick.

I love the Ride the lightning album. Call ktulu is my favorite instrumental. But like the one chick said the Black album was the first Metallica I heard, since I'm only 39 years old. So I'd have to agree with Sad But True. Gotta soft spot man... But if I got to be honest I haven't put in Metallica CD in for over 10 years.. the last stuff I listened to is death magnetic and it's actually a kick ass album. But Got to jam it loud on a quality car audio system.
