I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky

The seattle grunge bands weren't just around the same time, they all knew each other well. Pearl Jam, Soundgarten, Nirvana, Alice In Chains. They all saw each other around town. Saw each other at parties and got on pretty well together. Its kind of crazy that Chris Cornell, Eddie Veder and Layne Staley just magically appeared together and were at the same parties for a few years before they hit it big. All three of those guys have/had world class singing and emotive chops. For some reason all of those bands Unplugged shows were incredible too.

This music is considered Seattle Grunge.
It was a very brief phenomenon in the early/mid 90s. But four bands arose from the obscure Seattle underground, and shook the world *to it’s knees!!*

This song is unplugged, which is why it sounds so "timid" to you. It's grunge rock. And their sound is usually much harder than this. MTV had a show called MTV Unplugged where they invited all the bit artists to come play their songs but stripped down to a more acoustic format. The official version of this song is much more rocky, but for this song especially I love this version best. That man spilled his soul all over that stage and it was beautiful.

Lots of great Pearl Jam songs to check out. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chans all came out of the same scene in Seattle, in the late 80s/early 90s. You can't go wrong with any of them.
Also, Eddie Vedder wasn't part of The Doors, but he did sing with them when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Apparently The Doors said they would only perform if Eddie would sing with them. Those videos are worth checking out to. He did an amazing job!

Pearl Jam was formed from the band Mother Love Bone. When Eddie Vedder was there for his audition, Chris Cornell was recording a song for his tribute album. He was having a difficult time hitting the low notes of the song. Eddie started singing with him. This was the beginning of Pearl Jam. The song is Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog. One of the best shows I have ever been to, Pearl Jam at the Hollywood Palladium in 92. The Palladium holds about 4000 people and we were right up front, then in the pit, then catching stage divers. Eddie stage dived during "Alive" and surfed the crowd for a good twenty feet before getting back to the stage. Music just isn't the same anymore. I think autotune, shows like American Idol and The Voice had a lot to do with it. Name one band that came out in the last twenty years that comes close to a Pearl Jam or Nirvana. In the early 1990s, a new rock sound came out of the Seattle, Washington area. The genre was labeled "grunge" rock. Some of the best bands who rose to fame during this period were Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden and the Melvins. And NO Eddie Vedder never sang with the Doors. The Doors rose in popularity in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Eddie Vedder wasn't even born yet. Grunge remains one of my very favorite rock genres and it completely decimated the glam big-hair rock of the 1980s. Grunge was just more honest, culturally significant and poetic.

As someone else mentioned, Pearl Jam was formed after the phenomenal lead singer, Andrew Wood, to Mother Love Bone died from a Heroin OD. This is definitely grunge. .more mellow or soulful than Nirvana or Alice in Chains, but same stuff. A marriage of metal and alternative rock in the US Pacific Northwest in the 90s. I lived in Portland, Oregon through this and it is my favorite genre ever.

Just in case you still think they are a paler version of Nirvana, you need to watch Evenflow by Pearl Jam. Eddie Vedder's signature vocals with the rather closed-mouth delivery and heavy "rrrr" sound, was called a "yarl" back then, and was popularized by grunge. Some of my favorite voices from that era are Scott Weiland, Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, and Eddie Vedder.

When was PJ in their prime? I think you'll get different answers depending who you ask. This song was from their debut album Ten, and was very popular. It isn't uncommon for the "oldest" album to have the highest $ sales. Ten peaked at #2 on charts. Their next 3 albums from 1993 - 1996 were all #1, with charting hits. All 8 subsequent albums 1998 - 2024 have charted between 1 - 5. IMO, they were in their prime throughout the entire 90s, and haven't really paused. They're still touring frequently and releasing hit albums. The main thing that has changed is the popularity of "grunge" music, and thus their exposure to a newer audience.

This is my favorite non acoustic live version of Black:

It has the solo “that should have been” in it, Mike McCready is a legend.

Somebody correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think he really performed this song live again after this. I recall an interview where he said it was just too heavy for him. Great reaction, love the channel!

Pearl Jam was often compared to Nirvana when they first stepped on the grunge scene which caused a riff between the 2 bands which they eventually reconciled
