      Trent said it right! I have shot stuff with an $80k camera for a television show, and stuff with a 2000 drone, handheld by the landing gear, before hand gimbals, and it comes down to three things, imho, vision, technique and lighting. So much van be done in post with today’s t3ch. H3ck there are a few movies that were shot entirely on an iPhone, set up properly of course, beast cage etc. then you have the Blair Witch project. Bottom line, the tools need to be used to make money. A red camera sitting in the garage doin* nothing, waiting for the once in a while tv spot or movie bit, or the Mavic Pro shooting weddings 3very weekend. It then comes down to red and black ink in the ledger!

    • @highks496
      @highks496 4 роки тому +7

      Given the amount of tech you get in the Mavic package, it actually is cheap. You are getting a pretty decent miniature camera with good enough professional controls in a very decent gimbal/stabilizer system, attached to a nice computerized quad-drone with helpful automation features for single-person-operation. Also a good remote controller and a nice software package.
      I can still remember when I first saw footage of the Phantom 4 (version 1, not pro) on UA-cam a couple years back, I was thinking to myself "I really hope this is less than 3000 bucks so I can immediately get it". But I thought it was wishful thinking and it was probably more expensive. Then I went to the website and found out it was like 1500 with a ready-to-fly package including three batteries. I had to double check because this was so much less than I had expected.

    • @EODrunner
      @EODrunner 5 років тому +7

      I love my mavic and would never spend the kind of money to get a true professional setup but just as you say the mavic held it's own, the only reason that is true is because of the nature of such a basic shoot. If the video was done as part of a professional movie type I doubt it would be able to truly hold its own. I think the real reason it wouldn't hold its own is because of the post processing ability that you can get from having the ultra high dollar cameras attached to the pro rig. Cinematography wise Trent even said that there are others who could fly the Mavic better, which would clean up a lot of his shots.
      End of the day I'm sticking with my slightly over $1300 all told setup and saving the extra $99,000 for something like a house.

Tai Lopez made 50 million using a camera phone up right...So what is pro? I think the features for the price of the drone is pretty impressive considering with color grading he got the shots to look pretty similar. However he was able to get better pan shots and rotational edits because he could shoot in 8k.

    @highks496 4 роки тому +12

    The Mavic line is relatively common around here among professional camera teams who shoot for tv and/or industrial film. It's nice to have it in your bag and be able to get a few additional aerial shots just like that. It does increase the perceived production value of your tv piece or docu piece or whatever without adding extra cost. It's so small you can pack it in a bag and always have it in your car, ready to fly in 2 minutes.
    Funny enough the main reason I got my first Phantom a few years back was that I had time and time again spent an hour or two searching for a spot on a hill to get a long shot of some village or town, often with no good results. With a little drone, you can get that long shot from the air in 5 minutes, even with some nice tracking movement.
    So, the little Mavic does add perceived quality to my work and that of others in my situation. And for us it's either get those shots with a Mavic, or don't get them at all. There is no way I could lug an Alta with a Red to most of my shoots and also get an additional cameraman or drone pilot to operate it.

      I think he's worried because mid-tier budget productions are starting to question why they need to pay for 2 guys to fly a drone plus camera hire when they can get similar aeriel shots from 1 guy and at a lower rate with a DJI or similar prosumer drone.

      You can compare a $100,000 speedboat to a $4 billion dollar aircraft carrier if you want. What's more, if the criteria being tested is speed, the speedboat will probably win the comparison. Some comparisons will be _unfair_ because the result is a foregone conclusion (for example, the speedboat is not that likely to win if you evaluate its compliment of aircraft) but that doesn't mean it can't be compared.

For anyone that thinks that you could do even a fraction of the quality or have even half the capabilities with a Mavic vs the professional octocopters?....... has never watched a professional rig do its thing. I worked on Venom and there is no way on God's green earth that the little drone could of had a snowball chance in hell of doing what the professional drone could in downtown ATL. Just that base platform is min 30k. Flight time, speed, range, optional freq bands with various flight methods. It really isn't even a comparison. That larger drone outperforms in every single area it could other than size for cramp quarters. As well, commercial drone tech is advancing at no less of the pace than off the shelf, best buy units. I'm in picture cars, and I love hanging around and watching these guys do their thing. There just isn't a comparison.

Im a professional drone pilot as well but i do site acquisition and analysis, search and rescue, and agricultural surveying all in one. For my purposes I use an inspire 2, an air 2, and a phantom 4 rtk with multiple payload options for site analysis they work due to the ease of the ease of flight and driving between nearby sites so it has to be quick and mobile. Search and rescue is ideal with the air 2 because of the flight time and ability to whip around really quick but I rarely have jobs like that so roi also factors in. High End, thats subjective. Different people expect different things from what they use.
    Casey Neistat made a very good living as one of the most successful independent filmmakers today. He used these 1 to $2k drones endlessly.
    That Mavic Pro could easily have a $20k price on it, and it would sell. Not to the average consumer, but to highly paid professionals like yourself. That footage you needed on the balcony was done on that drone. If it couldn't create usable footage to sell and make a profit for you, you wouldn't use it. It wouldn't be a professional piece of gear. But it does and it did. And You would profit having spent 20k to have it around for such events.

This takes the law of diminishing returns to a new level I would say. Great video to show examples of just how close or not a consumer drone compares to a high end product, since not many people out there have a setup like yours to do this kind of test. Actually I think those people who do have a cinema setup comparable to yours don’t even bother to spend the time or risk of using their equipment to make this type of comparison video. The law of diminishing returns is very much in effect everywhere in the broadcast and cinema world... did you know that one of the huge, grey boxed 100x zoom lenses that you see in major league sports stadiums costs half a million dollars each? A tripod and fluid head for one of these lenses is like 25k. But apparently, tight close-ups of players in the game sell so much beer and chips that it's worth having up to twenty of those things at every game.
      However, you would see a night and day difference if we were watching the comparison between the Mavic and the Red on a huge movie theater screen with a professional 4k projector. Especially if somebody did some more extensive grading on the footage, like they usually do in big movies.
      I do like the Mavic though. It really delivers pretty darn good quality for a very competitive price.

The quality in the air as far as video goes I see no life changing difference between either the red or the movie. Video quality would make more of a difference on the ground, where you would use DOF and see the true dynamic range of the camera you choose. On the ground I use GH5 and in the air I use both Phantom 4 and Mavic 2 pro.... We have to remember it’s about story not expensive equipment. Well exactly. Have you tried doing these moves and close-ups from a car at 40 mph with a Mavic or Phantom? It's fucking impossible. The lens is a super wide angle, he was probably flying the Mavic at the exact same distance to the car than his Alta 8 setup.
      Also getting the perfectly smooth swing-around shots of a fast moving object with perfect framing is impossible with the Mavic. You could try and use object tracking or any of the other computerized helpers with the Mavic, they might get you a little closer to it, but you are never going to be as versatile and quick to react as with a 2-person setup and a 360° gimbal and a zoom lens.

  • @FlyingCameradotnet

    Yes, the Mavic did not do a great job. But then again, you had no idea what you were doing. Using the DJI follow mode on the truck would have blown away your shot with the big dumb dinosaur drone.
    You are incredibly limited with the size of the dinosaur and with the new chipsets you have very little advantage in picture quality. The dinosaur is incredibly dangerous and the fact that you claim to rarely use GPS tells the world that you don't fly in tight spaces with any wind, but then again, an 8 prop liability maker like that thing is so incredibly limited that no one would even consider using it for anything other than a city skyline or yet another chase shot.
    I operated the first Jib in Atlanta during the 80s. Not many people are more skilled at hand-eye coordination, but I would never try to wrestle a move out of any kind of drone. I program the shots, including aperture. Waypoints with changing points of interests if I need an incredibly complex shot, but most shots are just a dolly, or a crane shot, both programmable on a DJI, but not on the dinosaur. (I use third party software) And the aperture changes are smooth.
    The DJI Drones have thousands of uses that a large, 8 prop monster does not. They carry rather advanced cameras engineered for their use, not adapted by a series of 1980s robotics. I can set up waypoints that dictate speed, heading, camera tilt, aperture, point of view and preset framing. And I can set up 100 of these incredibly precise waypoints for a single series of moves and it will follow the same moves every take. Can you, and can you and the shooter even begin to match the precision or the smoothness?
    And if I am in Nowheresville, USA and I lose a drone, I can fix it with a trip to the local Best Buy and a credit card.
    You are comparing apples and oranges. They aren't the same and they aren't used for the same things. I shot my first aerials in 1980 for the NBC Nightly News with John Chancellor. I was shooting with an Ikagami 79, Angénieux glass, all on an ancient Tyler mount. That certainly wouldn't compare to your dinosaur. But does that mean that it wasn't professional gear?
    You stated that the DJI gear has a place. I would offer that the Dinosaur has a place. I will use a DJI tomorrow. There's not a single shot that I would prefer the big guy. I will be tracking two people in a park and in the final cut, there may be one shot that looks like it was shot with a drone. The others will be beautiful dolly shots, tracking shots, steadycam shots and crane shots, all preprogrammed and shot with a $1500 Best Buy Special.
    You are a gear geek. Stop looking down your nose at what others are using and start looking at the results.

      I think you're right. The Mavic does have some features that make it useable in a professional setting to some extent. It does have manual camera controls, zebras and a histogram for example. Pure consumer products are often simplified so much that professional use is more or less out of the question.

  • @nathanksimpson
    @nathanksimpson 4 роки тому

    Gear is just gear, but if you have gear, know it! You can customize input settings for the controllers on most DJI drones for how sensitive they are and how linear input curves are, and as you mentioned you can set the drone to various modes like sport mode, which lets the drone fly much faster, or cinema mode which smooths out the motions. One of the first things I did with my Mavic Air was adjust the gimbal tilt speed and yaw sensitivity. Yaw control is annoyingly sensitive out of the box, as this video showed.

    Love your videos, but want to point out that you CAN operate the Mavic with two people; one on flying and the other on settings/tilt. Of course there is no pan unless the main pilot allows that to happen. It is called the secondary remote feature and was added about a year ago, I believe. Not near the level of real professional equipment for sure, no argument there! All the shots on the cheeper drone were filmed from way farther away and were filmed in a much more static nature. Not really a side by side comparison.

    I just bought the Mavic 2 Pro for my UA-cam channel, in fact the quality is almost too good. My brand new $1,200 laptop struggles to play the video in full resolution and I have to reduce the quality to get the file size down to a reasonable upload size. Also, I do use two operators, one person is a full time spotter to warn of dangers as you fly. Also, the jumpy controls can be real smooth with an experienced operator, just takes time to get really good. And the smaller drone can run circles around the bigger drone at slower speeds, much more manueverable.
