The Bearhawk Patrol is a 2-place tandem that probably would have meet all your back country requirements with a 140 mph cruise, but you would've had to assemble/build a lot more of it yourself, particularly if you wanted to try and use the 916. You'll be happy with what you've chosen. FWIW, my wife prefers tandem.
I expected a Bearhawk as well. Just seems like it ticks all the boxes. The Patrol is only 850 useful. But the Companion would be there and keep side by side seating which is nicer with the spouse and 250 lbs baggage. Would not have to convert to tandem.

Hello from NorCal... Like the idea of a Red and Black paint scheme but for a twist not in blocks but maybe a time of long swirl from tail to nose cone.... I want a ride in the KitFox!! Love the channel...
Mount a small round mirror above you in the front so you can still have eye contact and conversation with your wife. That might help eliminate the tandem hesitation.
That's awesome that you're building a MOAC! I have an American Legend AL 18, and I absolutely love it! I feature a couple videos with it on my channel although I'm not an avid UA-cam creator. I would love the MOAC! You are going to be amazed by the performance. Loaded with VG's, she stalls at 23 knots published, but I have a video at 3000 feet MSL , and 1800 RPM, flying level, zero VSI and the airspeed indicator going well below 23 in fact it went so low it wasn't even registering a number any more ! And having those giant doors wide open on both sides is just a fantastic way to fly!!
There is a story that does the Cub proud, and our Nation. Bazooka Charlie and his Cub Rosie the Rocketer. Major Charlie was also known as The Mad Major. A true American Hero.
Just wanted to comment on just how far your videographer skills have come. The smoothness and continuity of your initial monologue over several "cuts" and an extended time. That was really cool to watch.
Understand to a point about keeping things in the USA. Bearhawk build assist facilty and ownership is in the US though. Dont forget Rotax and Garmin avionics arent made in the USA either! Congrats on the Cub! Its going to be a blast either way!
Trent! Wonderful news. Awesome you went to the factory and help out on your own aircraft. I am still flying an older Maule M4 with a Franklin 220. Still love it! Perhaps some day I will come out your way and look you. Up! Fishing time….
Took some welding classes local community collage we were not allowed to touch the TIG welder until we passed our gas and stick welding tests that was after 100's of welds. Instructor he was older guy who welded high rise buildings in NYC arms shook like crazy I suppose now looking back he probably had Parkinson's. Watching him lay down a bead was amazing skill weld with a gas torch on 14G steel weld two pieces together.
Question... did you mean wouldn't let you touch the Mig welder? Tig is stick welding. I'm an engineer in a full fab shop welding, metal forming, powder paint, assembly. Just curious I know the two are easy to confuse.
CubCrafters received Chinese capital funding by selling them the type certificate for the Top Cub. I think the Legend is the right choice especially since they are working to incorporate the 916 instead of just using a typical Lycoming or Continental. A turbocharged engine just makes more sense for your type of flying. Now just figure a way to mount your Starlink antenna with the narrower fuselage. I'm sure you made sure to install the proper ELT. Having the Repairman Certificate is a nice bonus as well.
@@cyclingbutterbean gotcha, I had to look it up. I guess I assumed because with TIG you manually feed the weld with a stick. I would not call myself a welder. I own a MIG but only use it rarely when needed. I learned something new. Comment wasn't meant to be offending just looking for clarification. Thanks
Gosh this reminds me of my uncle in the 60’s building his Pitts special. I’d spend time with him while he was sanding every little part. Mid way through his building the wings they changed the design and he scrapped the whole wing set he built and started over. So many pieces were works of art. He finally got his plane doe and flew it in the 80’s. What a labor of love. He had a single car garage in San Antonio . He had to build another garage to hold the plane once its was nearly finished.
Mike can't do that. There is certain things Mike can not do, and building someone else's dream aircraft is one of them. If you remember the plan to build Scrappy in the beginning, you will know that Scrappy became something so entirely different, it should have been called Scratchy. Some stuff on that airplane just didn't exist anywhere until Mike build it. I think what Trent is doing, is really a quite awesome way to build an aircraft.
Fantastic Choice of aircraft, and as you rightly say, the ability to customize your ride makes it just that much more personal. Great to see they use SolidWorks too for design! All the best with the build, awaiting the next update...
I think I have seen almost every mod done to a cub in Alaska. There was a mod, I think they called it a Superior cub that involved a J-3 with a o-290 no flaps very light weight. Weight seems to be the limiting factor in how a cub flys. More horse power means more load carrying capability. At the expense of maneuverability. some cubs have been rebuilt and altered with higher AOA and other mods that are not really visible. I have a fuselage, long wings, a couple of engines and enough parts to build one in the shop. Gas on the field is 7 bucks a gallon right now, it's saving me money sitting there.
Trent, I am excited to see this new chapter in your life and the new aircraft. Please keep up with the build videos so we all have an idea of how it is progressing and not be kept in the dark! I am not a fan of the tandem seating but as you said, it's a trade off. Best thing for your passengers in the rear seat is lots of windows so it feels more open and not a coffin and either have a panel in front of them with some nav maps or something of that nature. Even if it is mounted on your seat. That will help your passenger feel less of a trapped soul. Put a mirror above the pilots seat so you and your passenger can keep eye contact when talking and you not have to wrench your neck around to check on them. Also, please do another horn/smoke system install in this one. The smoke helps you alot judging wind in the backcountry as well as looking cool as heck. and come one, everyone LOVES the horn. But man, please please ,this time have it on a separate switch.
I'm looking forward to watching the build. I went through the same process of determining what fits my needs best, and am on the list for a Bearhawk 4 kit. I'll have to build it the slow way though.
Fun fact, Rotax didn’t want to work with me again, I am paying full price for a Rotax… and I did have an offer to work with another reputable engine manufacturer but turned it down because of how much I believe the 916 is the best option for this. So short answer yep! Haha
@@TrentonPalmer I was going back and forth. I’ve got a 914 in my KFA Safari. Love it. I want a cub. Come down to Arkansas! Lots of back country here too! Fly Oz! Thanks for the response. I know which way I’m going😁
Hey Trent! Thrilled you decided to go with Legend! I'd love to see you come out to an Airplanes and Coffee event when you get her ready! It's a monthly fly at different airports in the DFW area. Sulphur Springs has hosted them before, and Legend was great to work with during that.
I didn't hear a cost. I know that's a bit personal, but something ballpark would be helpful for us dreamers. Personally, I don't see a big difference between this and the Kitfox. Not enough to sink a bunch of money on anyway.
Legend Cubs are about $400k. I think you can get them as low as $350k if you go bare bones. His build is custom and he has added some stuff, so it is probably north of the 400 marker, but probably under 450. He might be getting a discount on his for promoting them, but that gives you a ballpark for what to expect if you wanted the same thing.
So, 10x the cost of a Kitfox for maybe 20% more airplane? Doesn't seem like a good deal to me. And I can't wrap my head around why one would be so expensive. There's really not that much to one.
@@jasonhurdlow6607labor labor labor. You’re paying a company to manufacture and engineer whatever customizations you want. Plus they need to turn a profit to keep the lights on.

No need to explain yourself. Do what you want to do. Good man, keep that money in the US. LOL the bug, bitten as a child? Truly enjoy your content. Thank you. John
For a paint scheme, you might consider one of your favorite characters or symbols. My husband used to build and fly RC sailplanes. He liked to use red with yellow accents. On the yellow rudder, there would be a lion rampant, representing Aslan, the "Not A Tame Lion" from the Chronicles of Narnia. He'd also put a yellow or white band on one of the wings, so he'd know which direction it was flying when it was high up on a thermal. Those things only had about a six foot wingspan, more or less, and could be very hard to see. Similarly, blancolirio bought the twin engine Cessna "Harvey," with the white rabbit Harvey on the tail. You mentioned you like red. But in your backcountry flying, a high visibility color scheme would be better for safety. Red both is, and is not, a high visibility color. Like the Freedom Fox, mixing red with other colors will really help it stand out.
Man you're right in my backyard. Congratulations on the Legend. You won't be disappointed. Please let us know when you plan to fly it home as I'm west of Ft Worth and you'll be flying right over. I've got a Super Cub and can round up the gang. We can go bar hopping (river sand bars). Lots of back country flying around here.
2:52 Should say Sulphur Springs,TX. Right down the road from me, toured the Legend Cub factory a few years ago with the flying club, super nice aircraft! Stoked to see your final aircraft!
Hi, just reaching out to STOL pilots that if you are anywhere near North Carolina you could do a lot of good by stuffing your plane with supplies and flying into the communities that are cut off by the flooding. Of course open airports are the first choice, but if you can land anywhere, do it! Get your non flying neighbors to provide the stuff.
congrats trent! As an experimental super cub owner I would DIE for mine to get the Legend touch and some upgrades! I've loved their cubs for so long! you definitely won't be disappointed
One think i want to hear is that you are still a friend with all the nice people in Kitfox, i personally would have feel hurt if my best advertiser goes to the competitors..
I am still good friends with everyone at Kitfox. Actually John the owner was the first person I called when I started considering making the move and he was super supportive, great people over there!
@@TrentonPalmer nice to hear that, i was inspired mostly from you and now i am building a kitfox(older model), so lots of us would be happy if you make some kitfox content in the future. Other than that a great anouncing video looking forward to watch more of it!
Very cool Trent! Excited to see the process. Once you're done with the build and have some time in it, it would be interesting to hear how it's different from the Freedom Fox.
I have tried both tandem and side by side. And I will always go side by side. If anything happens someone sitting beside you has a far better view to see where to land and if you need help with flying the aircraft they are right there. Plus you can hand them stuff to hold, look at a map or information and workout things together. You will also find that someone who has never flown before will be far more likely to do a better job in an emergency. Anyway good luck with the build and I hope you enjoy your new adventure.
Trent, my thoughts on your new bird... it's a Cub in its heart; Cubs are memorable for their shape, but mostly their yellow color. My suggestion, since you like the color red, is to paint a sun with rays on the upper wing surface done in yellow and red. The motif can extend down the sides as well, even integrating the lightning bolt pattern similar to the cub's longitudinal stripe of old. Anyway, you're design, no matter how it comes out, will be great. Oh, since the Cub was used in WW II as the L-4 Grasshopper spotter plane , there's always camo!
Nah, you can put any motor you want in a Bearhawk. It is experimental. I have a buddy who has helped put a turbine in traditional piston driven planes. He built the first KR2 with a turbine. He and I discussed it quite a bit. It would take some work to get the weight and balance right on it. The weight of a turbine vs an IO540 is substantial.
I flew a Bearhawk for a few years out of a 600ft strip and I think Trent was right to go with the cub. There's a lot of flying he does that wouldn't work in the Bearhawk.
It’s fun to hear about what you wanted in your aircraft. The interesting thing is we have very similar requirements for our aircraft. I too wanted a well built (strong) airframe, a nice finish, lots of range (fuel), a glass panel, lots of baggage area, and a good cruise speed in a tandem aircraft. I did not need to get into really short strips nor did I want to customize the airframe, so my choice was the Aviat Husky A-1C. With 1,860 hours PIC in Huskies, I still love them. I hope you have as GREAT of experience with your Legend Cub.
@@TrentonPalmer what about autogyros? you can get a starter on the main Rotor for shorter take off, you can put them on floats and by adding wings like on the Mi-24 Hind you can create extra lift wich means either more payload or longer range.
@@TrentonPalmer Ya there are a lot of advantages to fixed wing. I got checked out in the PA-18 Super cub in England last weekend for my tailwheel conversion. I am so impressed by what the 1955 Super Cub can do, in Europe we can't just land anywhere so a PA-18 here can fly anywhere, I can't imagine what your KitFox or your Legend Cub is going to do mate... Congrats!

Given the options you made the right choice. I am a 3 time Carbon Cub SS owner since 2010. I placed a deposit for the first US Carbon Cub UL position in March of 2023. I cancelled that position last month. I really wanted the 916iS in a CC SS, but many of the same issues you cited with Cubcrafters (the company) where too much for me. It is not the same company as it was when Jim Richmond and Randy Lervold were running things. Good luck on the build. Looks like Legend Cub is filling that role now.

12:09 NICE GREAT commentary Trent. Very honest and at the end of the day, it's your money and decision. Looking forward to the next vids! !! !!!
Looking forward to your new adventure. Great way to take the time to tell all your followers the process you have gone through.
Excited for the next chapter with the new bird. My little boy loves aviation and loves your channel so keep it coming and sharing the new build process in-factory is great and a good confidence-boost to future builder-pilots. We appreciate the professionalism that you put into each and every video with some of the finest video work you can do with POV cameras and drones. Keep it coming.
Hello from NorCal... Like the idea of a Red and Black paint scheme but for a twist not in blocks but maybe a time of long swirl from tail to nose cone.... I want a ride in the KitFox!!
Love the channel...
American flag tail would be pretty cool.
Congrats. You will have a ton of fun being a part of the build. Im very much looking forward to watching this process unfold.
Mount a small round mirror above you in the front so you can still have eye contact and conversation with your wife. That might help eliminate the tandem hesitation.
I have one to my 1938 Cub - works great with the kiddos
Bazooka Charlie and his Cub
Rosie the Rocketer.
Major Charlie was also known as The Mad Major. A true American Hero.
Great explanations on several levels and I look forward to the "out and about" travels.
Respect for that 2:50 intro. Very nicely done
Ditto.
Just wanted to comment on just how far your videographer skills have come. The smoothness and continuity of your initial monologue over several "cuts" and an extended time. That was really cool to watch.
Awesome aircraft! Enjoy yourself!
Understand to a point about keeping things in the USA. Bearhawk build assist facilty and ownership is in the US though. Dont forget Rotax and Garmin avionics arent made in the USA either! Congrats on the Cub! Its going to be a blast either way!
Sounds like you made a great decision and the peace of mind is priceless. Can't wait to see it fly.
SUCH a great choice, Trent! I'm excited for you.👍👍
Same story took a some night classes at a community collage and the instructor had the shakes bad and could he ever lay down some fine looking welds.
@@justinlareau2227 "TIG is stick welding"? I think not.
YES! I called it on your last video. I said go to Legend Cub!!!👍👍👍👍👍
Thx Trent...gonna be a great build...looking forward to the finished plane.
Unicorn SuperCub with long endurance, eh? Just ask Mike Patey to build you a custom Scrappy derivative.
that'd be epic
Ha….beat me to it..👍
I'm guessing that they've chatted a bit on this subject 😃
With all of the engineering that would go into, I can't even imagine the cost. Worth every penny though!
7:36 ”give some of those shoulder rubs” 🤣🤣🤣
I thought the same thing
Those are some of the benefits I guess
Haha
Be great after an hour or two of fly fishing.😉
@@blueman5924 oh yeah
Wow excited for you I got my tailwheel in a 47 J3. Can't wait to see the finished product with your inputs.
That's shocking parking there Trent at 2:24 🤣
Lot is empty…
@trent man great video! Love the way you filmed it! Love the topic! I am hooked…..
Legend red, white and blue paint job. 60's corvette.
That’s a good idea, white side cove painted to match the curve of the curved rear window.
I'm looking forward to watching the build. I went through the same process of determining what fits my needs best, and am on the list for a Bearhawk 4 kit. I'll have to build it the slow way though.
Outstanding! I’m about to pull the trigger on a Badlands. If you weren’t sponsored by Rotax Owners Group would you still put in a Rotax?
@@jasonhurdlow6607a kitfox is not 1/10th the cost
@@jasonhurdlow6607labor labor labor. You’re paying a company to manufacture and engineer whatever customizations you want. Plus they need to turn a profit to keep the lights on.
Trent, really looking forward to the progress on your new build. I truly enjoy seeing things develop and the process of making it happen.
Filmmakers: take notes on this video’s intro. He’s spreading a whole paragraph across several shots, and turned it into an engaging story! Beautiful done!
That paint scheme sounds awesome! Love the colors you mentioned and a clean stars and stripes paint job would be amazing!
No need to explain yourself.
Do what you want to do.
Good man, keep that money in the US.
LOL the bug, bitten as a child?
Truly enjoy your content.
Thank you.
John
Kept much the money in US……except the engine; no?
I agree with leaving the freedom fox livery with JJ
This is awesome!
I thought you'd gone all out Turbine Legend 😂
Club Crafters would do anything for you if your last name was Patey.
Because I don’t keep up what has CC ever done for Mike except give/sell him off the shelf parts for his custom builds
Horn, smoke, Starlink?...lol
No turbine tho
I’ve been waiting for this video after seeing the freedom fox up for sale. Awesome!!! Can’t wait bud to watch the build and see the final out come
Hi Trent just wondering what happened to Nik's Kitfox build and how's his recovery going now?
Very cool Trent! Excited to see the process. Once you're done with the build and have some time in it, it would be interesting to hear how it's different from the Freedom Fox.
"You were the chosen one!"
"It was said that you would destroy the cubs, not join them!"
😂
Haha yes!
Mike Patey’s build aren’t so budget friendly! Lol
@@coreythomas9178 His builds have a budget ? I thought he worked on more of a " spend until you're done basis"
How did this awesome simple hobby go from the J3 Cub to a bushplane that costs 400.000 bucks! what a shame.
"You're never going to land as short and perform as good as a 2 place"
Mike Patey enters the chat.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Mr. Turboprop!!!!
Sulphur Springs, Texas. Right down the road!
I can’t believe you didn’t go to a BearHawk
Junk pre-war motor🤷🏻♂️
SO.... when is Nic going to get his aircraft done ???? He owes it to the people that supported him after his crash !
No one forced anyone to dontae!
One has an obligation to follow through - I think.
That is the absolute best choice! I am stoked for you!
Hail storm will love the back seat! More room! 😊
Mate, why don't you just give in and get a helicopter
Cost mostly, that and I’m terrified of helicopters! Haha
Congrats!
Even after the FAA debacle you are number 1 for keeping your dollars out of Mexico. As a old (75ish) A&P was nice to see you make your own ribs and loading the spars and starting your cowl design . It will be a great day when your'e taking the virgin flight GO TRENT !
Didn’t cubcrafters go public/ipo? Once that happens, it boards, committees, risk management and MBAs tracking quarterly KPIs.
So nice to hear from you finally ! I guessed that you would go with an ampibian plane... due to your excitement at fishing on remotre lakes,...
Hailey must love you a lot to accept to loose the side by side seating configuration !
I wish you great succes with this new build !
And do not forget to keep your friends at parallel 42 informet of the new Trent Palmer Legend Cub for the Microsoft flight simulator FS2020 !
Waiting for your next video !!!
Congratulations Trent , on your new build! I will be following your building of your new ride, and I am looking through all my paint steams to give you some ideas. I look forward to as maney video updates as you can give us. Ron W.
