I've met Corey 3 times...on one occasion actually hung out with him before a show...he is EXACTLY the person you see in this interview. He's down to earth with no ego and truly appreciates his fans

Larry does this in a really professional manner, and I think that Corey knows this as well. I also work at a local TV station as an editor and I know how important the air time within the program is.

So Corey Taylor wanted Slipknot to have masks because they didn't want to be noticed for their physical appearance but goddamit who the fuck doesn't have a huge crush on this guy?? He's fucking hot.

HAHAHA awww bless anyways if I was a chick then id have a crush on the guy. Anyways what you were saying about the reason behind the masks I heard some where in 1998 or 1999 they had a hard tme getting signed for a record label company ( accompany that signs you and sells your material one step before getting global scale in the music business.) So I heard it was a fresh very rare seen in the 90's so if they wore masks they might get signed because the musics gd and the masks look cool it brought more attention to the band, also the masks originate from Shawn Crahan he brought in in the early days old slipknot 1996-1998 and he brought it in to scare everybody when working on the MFKR album or self debut album I cant remember which one and they whole group fell in love with the masks. Also soon after the masks are uniquely and individually made they created them themselves and they have a emotional connection to it to each masks that come out through different Era's. ill explain I think joey chose his first mask because it was the japan style mask his mother used to scare hoim with a child so therefore his first taste of the slipknot style/music, corey taylor chose his mask because it represented what he felt and thought at the time he was in a bad place in the older days so they have a unique feel and meaning to each mask, the Iowa version of corey masks look like the first one but has a battered look to it this is because well I think I heard Iowa was a bad time for them and he developed self harm and alcohol abuse and he had a bad poor childhood so the mask represents depression suicidal tendencies and melancholy, and vol 3 was a hidden face to disguise or reveal bits of him he wanted no other to see I think anyway. Theres deep meaning behind slipknot song masks and opinion's and that's why myself a 17 year old british male love them, I love stone sour too
Andy Dunn I've heard different stories as to why they wear masks. But I definitely believe this one since he, Corey, has explained it several times too.

I remember trying to explain Slipknot to my granddad once. It was about as uncomfortable and disjointed as this.
To his absolute credit, Taylor figured out how it was going to go early and dealt with it with more humility and patience than he probably should have. Fuck, imagine if it was Clown in that seat.

Actually that is a part of his work. He does this for the audience, not for himself. However he is probably doing this work because he wants to.

I would argue that that's what makes him a great interviewer. He asks questions that maybe he's not totally into but he knows the audience is. He's just old but most definitely wise.

I've never heard anyone say anything bad about Corey when meeting or dealing with him. Just a genuinely nice person.
I love how Corey adapts to LK's mode of questioning. There are some points where LK allows Corey to really expand on an answer, but there are times when LK is very paint by numbers and doesn't give Corey mich of a chance to fully answer but Corey goes with it accordingly.
King: "Does the whole band wear different masks?"
Corey: "Yeah..they.."
King: "Put it on."
Me: "You demanding son of a bitch...."
I suspect Larry couldn't give less of a shit about who this guy is.
Maybe at the beginning, but as the interview goes on, I think Larry becomes more and more eager to know more about Corey. At 21:31 when Larry says "You're an interesting guy Corey", he sounds very sincere.

Don't feel that Larry king paid enough respect to Paul's memory, very quickly and harshly brushed the subject. Especially such a polarising and impactful moment for the band, perhaps he didn't understand the true impact of his death; but, as with any death of a friend, he should expect a lot of pain surrounding the subject.

Good and interesting interview BUT King interrupts Corey quite often for more questions when Corey is about to tell something deeper, more interesting to the previous question. I would have loved to listen to all his side stories but it's always ''next question'' here.
I think its because its a timed interview so he has to get as many answers as he can in the half hour, so when he think he gets all he needs he moves on to the next one

Not my dad, he listens to metal as well. He doesn't really like Slipknot though, he likes some of their songs, same with Korn, but he likes Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth etc.

Eh. Well. For their time they could have been considered a genre of metal. Metal has meant a lot of different things over the past few decades. Blue Oyster Cult is described as a “Heavy Metal” band, and their stuff is comparatively tame to modern metal.
I would say hard rock at best.

It wasn't the best interview, but that's just because King is completely clueless about metal(not surprising of course). I didn't think that there was anything wrong with how he asked anything. That's just how he is, and like you said Corey didn't seem annoyed or anything.
I think this is a great interview for people who don't really know metal music that well, its good for more people to understand different kinds of music. Larry King isn't THAT bad. Some questions did on the spot.

As the frontman of 2 heavy metal bands that sings harsh and very loud music with scary topics/themes to talk about, Corey is super educated and humble guy and very different as a person. Love it.

He phrases his question in a way that his mostly older audience, that doesn't know much about metal can relate to and understand more clearly.
Not due to a lack of preparation.
Larry should be a better role model about how to communicate better... people watch him and turn into robots because thats how you will be accepted and famous... set an better example especially about respecting your communication partner, maybe?

From what I remember of that, it was a good back and forth, Joe either knew Maynard well enough, or at least did his homework. Larry King sounds like he just reads off cue cards and doesn't really give a fuck about his guests. Which is something that would probably piss off Maynard.
Joe is an actual fan and shares hobbies with Maynard. Plus he's enthusiastic and genuinely interested.

I do get down to some thrash hahahah, I like just about every genre of metal and rock but I love classical and country.

Comments suggest that Larry was constantly cutting Corey off in boredom - but Larry King has interviewed everyone and does fire off questions rapidly to his guests while keeping a professional flow.
In fact Larry does tell Corey he is an "interesting guy" so I'm convinced he enjoyed the interview.

Actually, he's not being disrespectful. Listen to the question. He wants someone from the heavy metal world answer that to people who maybe never listened to metal. Larry King demographic is what it is, so that question, so straight to the point is a good way to get an explanation for someone who never listened metal from someone who makes and lives it.
What an awesome interview. Corey is so intelligent and can answer questions so well. Love that Stone Sour are bringing out an album of covers next year. I've wanted them to do that for ages. Corey does great covers.

I totally agree with you Peter. Larry King didn't even know what band wore the masks. You're right, if it had been any other interviewer they would have had a lot to answer for. It's actually the first time I've seen a King interview. I'm in Australia and we don't get him over here. Not impressed with Larry King but greatly impressed with Corey. :)
Peter Pohn I think that was LK's role - to be a not-knowing interviewer, to be impartial, to bring out from Corey as much as possible about music, Slipknot and Stone Sour. This way a not-knowing watcher can learn more about Corey, the bands and music, because, let's face it, the general audience of LK is different from the general fan-base of Corey and his bands.

Kudos to Corey for holding up in this, I know Larry wasnt always easy to answer sometimes, but especially the questions about metal, I felt he answered honestly and awesomely. Its gotta be a feat in itself to be asked on this show so you must feel like youve made it if you are, shame that no one else will have the privilege, RIP
Great interview man, i think Larry king did a great job and Taylor is always a great speaker no matter what situation. Direct questions, straight faced honest interview, Larry saying "you're an interesting guy Corey" shows even if he didnt dig the tunes he still respected the guy enough to ask him honestly about the things he may not understand being from a completely different generation. cool :)

A classy guy, very easy on the eyes too, he's got that Paul Newman style good genes thing going for him. Don't know why people find fault in Larry King's interviewing, he got a lot of interesting information out of him and kept things moving when Corey might have otherwise over-explained something, and he seemed to be genuinely impressed by him at the end. Great interview by a master of the art.

i have to say I've never listened to metal or rock in the past, usually dance/house but when i listened to slipknot it was like a breath of fresh air .... i listen to one of there songs and i feel free to be myself. Since then I've given up drugs and kept it straight all thanks to this band

I would not have expected for Corey Taylor to know who Ornette Coleman and free jazz is, he has earned my upmost respect
you would be surprised, but metalheads are usually musicially well read. And most metalheads do enjoy classical music and jazz as well (after all, the instruments are the same, or pretty much the same). I personally can listen to anything that has more than a laptop invested in it. (laptop is not an instrument!)
@@Inferiis I know, I’m now one of them. I wrote that comment when I had just become a slipknot fan and I was into jazz and classical because I played primarily trumpet, now I am a full on metal head and primarily a guitarist.
