- Slipknot, one of the most prolific and brutal metal bands out there, are back. The masked 9-piece heavy metal band from Des Moines, Iowa first descended on the UK in 1999 when they released their debut self-titled album. 16 years and five album releases later they're now a multi-platinum, grammy-award winning band, renowned for their chaotic live shows. Daniel P Carter gains exclusive access to the band backstage at the final show of their first UK tour in six years. Here he catches up with band members Corey Taylor, Shawn Crahan and Jim Root about their long awaited return to the UK following the death of founding member Paul Gray and the departure of drummer Joey Jordison. Dan finds out what goes into the making of a Slipknot show and hears from fans excited to witness Slipknot live, after years of anticipation.
I'm the mom of a HUGE Slipknot fan. I have to admit, this band scared me a bit, and it worried me when I found out that my son was listening to them. That was only because I was too busy judging instead of learning. I'm thankful that I sat down with him, many times, to listen to him explain the symbolism behind their masks, I paid attention while he explained lyrics, and watched intently as he and I sat and watched as many documentaries (like this one) on them just to help me grasp why he liked them so much. This band helped my son through a very angry and painful time in his life.... and I'm thankful that he found them..... I'm also thankful that I opened up my mind to understand what this band is actually about.
you my lady are a very cool open minded mom ,well done you . you did the best thing possible ,really refreshing to hear so much positivity great comment ,peace and light
Thank you so much, andy meanock .... that means a great deal. I get a lot of flack from other parents or adults... but then, I get to use my knowledge to school others. Peace and light to you, my friend.
glad icould spread some joy ,the world needs more , thank you for replying and being well, just you x peace
+Penny Fleming we need more mums like you in the world. In fact, more people like you. I can't count the number of times that uninformed and ignorant people have put me down for liking this band, so it means so much to me that there are people like you who take the time to understand us. The approach you have taken is applicable to so many other aspects of today's world, I just hope more people can learn to do this.
Hey William Vickery, I would say 'thank you', but I actually think that the 'thank you' should be being said to you.... that and a huge apology from the closed minded people, of which I used to be. What I can tell you is this, at least from a parent's point of view...when you have kiddos, you already have a pre-destined plan for them (ridiculous, I know....but just wait...lol)....and when they start walking toward a path that you have NO KNOWLEDGE of, it's scary. I knew my son was at a really low point, then to feast my eyes on this band that he had chosen as his way of coping really took me aback. I guess the difference is, rather than demean him for it, I asked questions. Music has always been a huge part of our family dynamic, so it was easy to get the conversation started. In truth, I'm fascinated by this band, and by their shear intelligence and talent. He gets really angry when people judge him for liking them as well. One piece of advice that I can give you when people judge you for it....ask them what they know about the band....ask them if they know what the masks symbolize.... something to get a conversation started. It's hard not to jump on the defensive, but I can tell ya' a conversation is worth its weight in gold....so much so, I've downloaded some of that 'gold' onto my own playlists. LOL. Be blessed and be happy.

Corey: the only way I can sum up Paul Gray, is love.
Paul: *flips off the camera*
He got a fast and accurate response...
Bill Clitoris 😂😂😂 I thought the same thing
I just went back to see that, hahaha good find.
I was searching for this exact comment hahahahha
Lmao
I was that one kid in high school that Clown talks about. I am so glad that I found metal music. I felt like I wasn't worth anything until I found metal music. Metal saved my life.
1nFamouSninJa The same thing happened to me
Without metal I would be dead
Metoo
Same here my dude 🤘
Without metal, I don’t think I could listen to any sort of music
R.I.P. Joey. Can’t believe he’s gone. Pleasure to see him drum for Slipknot and Metallica.
Remember him.
Paul, Joey, May you be speeded to your paradise.
glad someone said it. cause “ClOwN” has no problem trying to take all the credit for slipknot like he is irreplaceable. he’s damn near a bigger attention whore than sid. funny how all the original “founding” members died. Clown saw that as more money. clown may be a big part as far as his keg but he and what he does is really not even needed. he was out of the last couple of shows and it was the same. i wouldn’t be surprised if he brought in the keg that way he is actually needed for a song. i’ve never liked his demeanour. shady as fuck man
ACTUALLY: slipknot's fans are called maggots because one day shawn crahan was observing a group of maggots eating a dead deer and shawn compared them to how slipknot fans look at concerts.
MadBull RC Have you ever eaten dead deer? When prepared it's called Venison and it's fucking beautiful.
Awoken Genius
The fuck does that have to do with anything?
Was literally typing this, then I looked down and gave you a thumbs up.
a famous quote from sir Phillip H Anselmo in 1996! ..i think crahen saw it and took the idea to a new place.
True
After Shawn closes Paul's cabinet at 11:10 you can see Joey's locker right underneath it - still there, untouched. Kind of heartwarming to know that even if they aren't in the band anymore, they're definitely not forgotten.
spartenbeny Honestly (this is my opinion) I think they unfortunately don't give a shit about Joey. Instead of staying by his side while he fought a possibly career ending illness like the family they always claimed to be, they kicked him out like an old, sick dog. Worst of all, they didn't even have the guts to do it to his face, they fired him cowardly through email. That's not something you do to family. I'm sorry if my words seem harsh, I still love Slipknot and I adore Joey, I just wish they would reach out to him and get him back (no disrespect to Jay, he's a great musician but Joey's irreplaceable). Anyway, just had to get this off my chest.
Unforgetteble
Jay is the drummer Slipknot always needed
@@CTHARDCORE606 bullshit, lmfao
His & Hers
That’s a ridiculous statement. Joey was the backbone of the band and one of the biggest contributors to composition besides Paul.
I was working on my farm when I heard on the radio that Paul died. I dropped what I was doing, sat down on an old tire and cried.
ArkaeaFCL3 I think we all did
my wife actually told me about it. told me Slipknot was gonna do a press conference due to a death of a member. that was when I first heard it was Paul who passed.
I cried so fucking much then went in the shower to hide and cry in there even more :(
Slipknot's a f****** Corporation now
Omg 😂 shut your dramatic country ass up
Root has a sick beard.
+starwolffan13 kinda like long hair no beard root a lot too
+starwolffan13 "Root-beard"
+starwolffan13 don't you mean...
sic
I like his style now but i like more his long hair no beard look better
i dig the beard but i miss his long hair
This is great, Slipknot is my fucking life... Slipknot is a fucking culture

It's a lifestyle
TheInfantFinite666 What about Jesus Christ? Without Him no life.
Haha You again XD
antivatican1 Slipknot is nowhere near nu metal...and you don't have to understand it, you never will and that's it
sid: "so that i don't destroy my legs..."
me: AGAIN
Too bad they threw him to the dogs because of his conditions and he passed shortly after
@@brandonsean123 he’s talking about Sid not Joey
I bet shawn went back and folded paul underwear when the camera was turned off
@meraak1 Damn dude :'D
you're probably right
And maybe.. just maybe... had a little sniff......
Slipknot and McGregor fan. You are my new best friend.
You know you're getting old when you are considered the 'Old/first' generation of a fan base O_O
I hear you... argh!
+Mark Sneddon (Mark767) I was at a show in london once and I saw a girl I went to school with and her 12 year old daughter I was like fucking hell!
The new generation would never feel what is like to be an old maggots. But, I sees & feel lots of positive energy being generated among these new maggots. Diff gen, diff message. We've evolved with the band. :) We were so dark those days.. lol..
PG Loi They were a darker band! lol Remember when no one knew what the hell any of them looked like, without the masks? Just 9 scary dudes playing the heaviest stuff you ever heard lol
***** Yup, no doubt. But all the band who grow up with us like RHCP, Greenday, Metalica, Rage againts the machines and so on, all has evolved.. music, lyrics, the dark side...Sometimes, I still play back those 90's album to "face my inner fear".. lol

Metal helps me when I'm at my worst, I'll lay on my bed earphones on full blast and metal just lifts me up
Same brooo
Ok.... have to apolgize...I am 49...yeah..I'm freakin old..I never listened to slipknot until I ran my first marathon in jan....I needed something crazy at mile 20...I needed something to push me through to end...I put slipknot on my playlist...it was awesome. I finished my first marathon. I am
A fan now...I chapter 5..freakin great...they are my 20 mile wakeup call.. thanks guys...don't ever conform...
That's awesome 😁
It's good stuff. Welcome!

I am 42 and i have listened Slipknot about 20 years now and then...but last summer i quit opiates and started running, that helped when i started to think using opioids ...and Slipknot really got the energy flowing....best music for running for me. Could say that this band was and still is big reason i am still alive, i used opioids almost 20 years and now im addicted for running...much better addiction than that garbage. I never wasnt a big fan of the band, but i am now.
@@RUTJA. God move man, keep on moving and don't look back, the past is shit and look straight ahead.
As for thinking you're too old to like Slipknot - I'm 57... Stay clean my friend but keep your mind dirty.... X
8:10 Okay it is official even Jim admits that USA audience is bad compared to Europe :D
Cuz the western stuff is either country or mainstream pop. Hard rock is very popular in the UK.
other metalheads: I listen to metal because it's my way of expressing how unique I am and that I will not conform
me: I listen to metal because it's fuckin' awesome
Jim Kiernan Same, if you do something just to be different then you aint doing it right.
Lol
I’m a bit of both
That's not really a logical take though. Can you like something on the most basic level? Sure, but those who find something that defines them and their tastes isn't wrong either. While you say you listen to metal because it's awesome, there's another reason why you stick with what you listen to.
Actually you just did the same as "other metalheads" :D
Sometimes I listen to metal to calm down
Slipknot means so much to me, they saved me from Suicide after my dad died in 2008 in fact he died just after All Hope Is Gone was released so that album was the main album and thing that basically saved me from taking my own life! My first concert was Slipknot at Download 2009 and I have to say I had never felt so relieved because that concert helped me get rid of all the sadness and anger that I had felt ever since my dad passed a year before so Slipknot will always be in my blood until I die STAY (SiC) everyone!
thats amazing man! stay true to ur roots! maggots for life
Im so sorry for your loss, and Slipknot has helped me through hard times to,i was abused as a child, but i would always go back to my tablet my grandma gave me,lock myself in the bathroom, and listen to Slipknot. I consider fellow maggots as family, so i hope this made you feel a bit better brother
Your Dad is proud of you.
What an incredible story (if I may say so) fellow maggot; I'm very sorry about your dad, and I'm so glad that you found peace thanks to this wonderful moment (this gig looked so (sic)) spent with this band. My kindest regards and support to you dear.
They helped me like they helped you too, my father passed away in 2005 & I’ve never been the same since :(
6:35 Slipknot isn't about that. We, the fans, nor Slipknot the band, wants anyone to die for them. Having something truly worth dying for, means you can live for it and be a part of it. Slipknot keeps people alive, dying is what others want to happen to you.
"The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one."
I know this is an old comment, but I agree with you so much. I'm glad someone commented on that because when that girl said she'd die for Slipknot, I understand she was trying to express her love for the band, but it left a weird taste in my mouth.
Monica Wilberger I agree, it's not a message I want to promote in a vague way, but at the roots of her statement I understand what she was saying (I think).
Isn't that quote from The Catcher In The Rye?
@@macion9481 The guy's face next to her was also like....umm...idk about that one fam

Slipknot is the reason why I want to play metal
me too
Me too.
I have always wanted to play copper!!!
Let's do it
Best thing about this interview: Corey's shirt. "Ask me about my attention deficit disorder or my cat, I have a bike, do you like [TV], I saw a rock [band]"
Fucking awesome!!! Lol...🤘🏻
I know this is a super old comment but does anyone know if he’s ever spoken publicly about having ADHD? I’ve just recently fallen in love with the band and after watching interviews and Q&A type talks with Corey I had huge suspicions, and after seeing the shirt I’m guessing he does have it or maybe wasn’t diagnosed but thinks he does haha.
I was diagnosed a few months ago myself and I definitely find myself connecting more with people who have it and I thought Corey was such a cool guy right off the bat, so it explains a lot.
@@CosmeticHappy I’m not sure! Good question for Google lol
@@veronicadavanzo2064 Sorry I should have mentioned, I looked it up on Google but couldn't find anything at all other than his previous battles with depression and anxiety (which are extremely common and comorbid with undiagnosed ADHD, I myself went through the same thing before being diagnosed at 29).
Randomly enough, last night I bumped into a friend of mine who is in a tech-death metal band and he said he and many other people he knows in other bands all have diagnosed ADHD and that it seems to be quite common amongst us metalheads... so I wouldn't be shocked if Corey has it as well. I freaking love my fellow ADHDers, we are the most chill, down to earth people because of how hard life can be for us.
Slipknot carried me through my military career and life with depression anxiety and utter hate for the world! If it weren’t for them I doubt I’d be here today 🙌🏽
I don't see Slipknot as a culture...i see them as my world.
***** Amen fellow Maggot :D
Snail Man Same
Amen
All hail that
Snail Man they're an awesome band and have definitely influenced a generation but to say what you said is comparing them to a god. I mean damn they are one of my favorite bands ever ( top 3) but... damn you're silly.
been listening to these guys since 04 and it still never gets old.... stay (SIC) my fellow maggots, I love you all!! \m/
matthew scott I discovered slipknot on accident in 95. A CD I found in a box my dad got from his friend who's son joined the army. I've been a fan ever since.
William Niles 95?? right....
Mohamed Shamim before cory was with the band . Anders Colsefni was the singer. Shawn and joey were the first two guys to play together. Shawn pulled a clown mask out of a closet. Shawn
had turned to joey. Joey was weirded out but thought ohhh that's sick. Hence the masks. The bands name was originally painface. A song called "slipknot" was on the LP. So they changed the name to slipknot because it seemed like a better fit. When anders got the boot he started painface again with a new band.
Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. Is the actual first album. EP. I had a basement tape of the rehearsal that came with it. I can't remember the name of my dad's friends son (military guy) . I think he was a friend of shawns
hell yeah
"What does that say about society?" Fucking genius question from Corey.
Mattimaximus It's fucked.
Without maggots, we would be drowning in dead stuff...
moJomittens like Ariana Grande
moJomittens yes..such as pop music
Shitty music in general
moJomittens dead meat
I....honestly never thought of it that way. Wow.
"Leg braces so i dont break my legs"-sid 😂why didnt you use them before?
Thank you Ross Robinson for bringing slipknot and Korn to the world!
Slipknot Is in my very soul they drive me to do better in life and achieve great things SLIPKNOT 4 LIFE PAUL GRAY 4 LIFE

"what could we have done to help Paul?"
and now
"What could we have done to help Joey?"
come on guys dont let another member die like this. help them while u can
I have been listening to slipknot since I was 12 years old I'm 14 now and at the time slipknot helped me through many things like bullying ect and at first I didn't like slipknot but after I started listening to them more I bought all the albums, merchandize, posters you name it to this very today I'm proud to call myself a maggot and apart of the slipknot culture \m/
I am 29. My twin and I have been listening to Slipknot since 99. We are absolutely huge Slipknot fans. It's just one of the bands that we still listen to, while we have both gone different ways in our taste of music.
I’m almost 50 and just saw Slipknot for my first time a couple nights ago. I dont listen to a lot of metal but definitely respect and understand the genre. Something told me to go see them. I love these guys and what they do. They are down to earth af and I love that. Really cool that a bunch of dudes from Des Moines rule the world.
corey has said he calls them maggots because during concerts, they look like maggots (the crowd) feeding off something
+Matt Damon ok? am I suppose to know if he's lying or not?
+Matt Damon ok
+Matt Damon I'm fine. I stated facts. you were being sarcastic, then you were normal, now Youre defensive. tf is wrong with you?
+Matt Damon I said "ok" am I suppose to praise you? does "ok" really trigger you? I corrected the idiot in this video and now you're acting like daddy won't stay out of your ass.
Matt Damon it's funny how you had to delete your comments so you don't look too stupid. All you've proved is how you don't have the mental capacity to realise when you're wrong. You started an irrelevant conversation and you can't finish it.
Im 13 and Ive been a fan since i was 7. Im going to see them for the first time next month, wish me luck 😂😂🤘
🤘
Been here since the very beginning and I'll be here until the very end and beyond
I didn't find Slipknot till 08 when my life was at it's lowest. I needed something and man they're music was perfect
I’m 37 years old, I first heard Slipknot when I was 13. I’m not going to act like I’m their biggest fan, I’m a big fan, but millions more love and cherish them more than me. They had a massive cultural impact on young people, whether you loved or hated them, they spoke to everyone at a time when a lot of people were angry and didn’t know what they wanted.
I have a friend who gotten to see Slipknot five times (lucky him, right?) and every single time he's broken a bone. Full respect to that crowd man
Man. That brought tears to my eyes. Their 2014 tour was the first time I got to see them live in concert. AND meet them! lol I will forever hold fond memories.
It's an unexplainable thing. You're so filled with pride, nostalgia, joy, history.... everything. These guys have been with me since the day I became a baby maggot in high school. Some of my worst times in life. They were with me through it then. They are with me now. Yeah. I can't explain it. I love em!
My favourite band, been listening to them for a little over a year and I've never regretted a minute of it
Same. :)
These guys are keeping the metal scene alive. Their music & lyrics are above most other so-called metal bands. Good post.
What a great documentary! I always love seeing new videos of my favorite band
Middle school this year for me has been hell for me. Constant pressure from being different, kids looking at me like an outcast. And here's Slipknot who helped me through the darkest of times. Like they once said, "Don't ever judge me".
Ha looks like Sid drinks pre-workout before the show. Respect.
Its sid, guess its so kind of coffein booster
I started listening to slipknot when I was 10 years old when All hope is gone came out!!! Then saw then last year. Still one of the best concerts I have ever seen!!!!
Great , and I do mean GREAT Mini Doco !!!!
Thanks for making it !
The intro for that tour still gives me goosebumps when I see it. The perfect combo of the guitar ring outs and the curtain slowly rising to unveil the band. God I could relive that over and over!
I wish they would drop it it would've been way better still Sic
ty for upload dude
This is one of the best documentaries I've seen on Slipknot
Highschool Senior here, been jamming with Slipknot since roughly two years after Volume III thanks to my sister. Utmost respect for the band and each member within. I just hope one day Joey will return.
You like it or not Best metal band on earth
Narf What if i told you that i'm a huge metal fan and i listen to everything from classic heavy metal to death metal and slipknot is still honestly my favorite band it's the band i listen to the most even though i do agree that bands like Death have more talent as far as guitar playing, song structure and lyrics goes but i still can't deny my love for slipknot. and if you look past the big singles you will see that the rest of their songs have amazing song structures. whatever people say slipknot is still my favorite and i love every album they made. And what you said about them being just another Nu metal band is complete bullshit there is no band that sounds like them especially at the time they just started. and all those who tried to copy them failed miserably. you are just one of those metal elitists that keeps saying to people that they should expand their horizons just because a mainstream band is their favorite.
I respect your opinion. I love Slipknot.....Gojira is my favorite. They...as well as Slipknot are incredible live...but hey...If you love metal we are all brothers and sisters.
Spoken like a true 12 year old
Narf But It is because of the live show and maskes that they are as big as they are. With music that people like, it brings an atraction. I personal dont want to see the same basic rock or metal over and over.

I know this video is old and hardly anyone will see this, but Slipknot helped me through an extremely tough time in my life dealing with depression and when I thought I shouldn’t be here, seeing them live with fans was the best experience of my life! Made 2 life long friends from download 2009, I know there’s probably others who have been through a similar experience and hopefully you’re okay now 🙏 all I’m trying to say is Slipknot aren’t just a band they/we are a family ❤️
Jim's hair is always on point... always.
God damn do i miss concerts
What a great documentary.
Thanks BBC! The UK always does it right.
First time I listened to them i couldn't stop listening and continue and can't stop listening to them ,there music is so unique it never gets boring.
My son got into the band at school, my first impression was wtf is this ! In a negative way. Upon listening to their music time and time again , I began to like them more and more. Beginning with the softer stuff, then moving onto the heavier tunes. I have to say as a 57 year old 😊 the band are actually amazing. We've just had wanyk and I'm looking forward to the next album already.. can't attend any gigs though the bones can't handle it lol 😊😊😊
EXACTLY. I'm kinda girly and people have told me that I look like I listen to a lot of pop music or 90's R&B. Then I'm like "well...." and I show them this or some other group. Lol. Really wish I could see Slipknot live though.
slipknot is one of those bands that helped me in life through the hard times and what made me love metal and the meaning of metal slipknot fan for life 🤘
I will never stop listening to slipknot and I will always go to there concerts if I can
MAGGOT 4 LIFE RIP Paul

There will never be another band like slipknot. They are all musical geniuses. They will always be in my top favorite bands
Ya know what? I loved Slipknot in middle school and high school. listened to them every morning on my way to school, listened to them before football practice, listened when I hated, and I listened when I loved. When we talk about favorite bands, I always bring up Slipknot and am still listening after 8 years.

Saw them live when I was 15. So, 19 years ago.
Fucked up my ears for a solid week afterwards. Been going to see metal again this last year and taking musicians earplugs with me. They help a lot. If you really love music, look after your ears out there.
Oh man, that sounds tough. I hope you don't have any long lasting problems because of that? I'm gonna be seeing them in two weeks and already ordered some musicians earplugs, so I'm glad to see that they work. I saw them for the first time last summer and my ears were also fucked up after that.
But wow, seeing them back then in their prime must've been awesome!!

How can you be with such a person!? 😂
I miss the 1999 (when slipknot was made) and still a maggot to this day
@G Coy he probably meant there debut album
Slipknot 1999: "(eerie voice) The jumpsuits, the bar codes, the masks - fuck who we are as people, we are Slipknot"
15 years later: Paperboy hats and laughing about being successful
Still so proud to say that I've been to the wembley show! Was an amazing night with everything!
You would think that I would have seen Slipknot already because I'm from Iowa. But they NEVER play Des Moines it seems. But I'll finally see them in August.
Have fun dude! Seen them once. Honestly a show I'll never forget.
How was it dude? I saw the show was Friday
+Skyline Of FIFA Painful. But awesome.
I'm swing them on the 20th and me being 13 this is my first EVER concert I'm excited af
That strange moment when you see all the MCR pictures on the girls wall.
+Chris Brugess when u see her mcr merch and get so fucking annoyed because these new emo kids think theyre fucking metalheads
Chris Brugess I cringed
if those kids are considered maggots then fuck, i don't want to be identified with them. i love listening to slipknot but damn, those fans in the video are weird as shit.
RuPaul who cares what they listen to? You can enjoy more than one genre.
That being said, MCR has some annoying ass fans. Even MCR themselves have said they thought the “emo” subculture is shit
"these emo kids think they're fucking metalheads" or maybe you can like more than one genre of music and not build your whole identity around one style because you have other interests and personality traits lol just a thought!
I live in Birmingham and what they said just made me so happy
This video is amazing! I need more videos like this one. It's something absolutely awesome!
For the first few seconds of this video it almost sounds like GTA San Andreas is about to come on lol
I love slipknot so much. other than avenged sevenfold slipknot is my favorite band
And a keg occasionally 🙄
Same!! Slipknot and A7X for life!!
im wayyyy into nirvana more XD
Same. Got my first tat yesterday. Pick and poke. pleasantly painful. Done it myself. Avenged Sevenfold really understood the depression while Slipknot understood the anger. 2 way underrated bands that need more respect. A7X is pretty respected these days though.
kurt.cobain.nirvana.forlife
A7X and Slipknot are the two deepest bands ever. Love em
I've been a fan since 98-99. I'm 37 Korn, slipknot, rage and so many others have been on my playlist, and will always be. My daughter's listen to them now
Even though this documentary is 3 years old I really like how Slipknot is still getting new fans. I've just entered my 20s and Slipknot have become one of my favourite bands over the past few months
