I am Iranian American woman, I live in NYC and I love this man. The other day I shared my experience of growing up in Iran and witnessing the tyranny that took over after an idealigical revolution and the horrors I've seen, to help give my liberal friends a perspective. The response I got? You don't know what it's like to be black in America, therefore you're still privillaged (less than a white man but still) so you should stfu and just listen..

It always reminds me of a 1982 comedy, where the main character (a convinced socialist) asks his tenant (a successful businessman from the West suspected of espionage):
"Could I kindly ask you for a favour? Please, help me not to murder you. You see, my entire life I've been humiliated and degraded by lesser intelligent and less important people. And all my life I've been on the brink of killing someone. Stalin killed thousands of you imperialist pigs, but he didn't kill enough of you. I wouldn't want to be the one, who does Stalin's work. I'm not that mad. But don't you be the one to atone for all the injustice common people had to suffer by imperialist hands. After the war, you left your castles and your slaves and went West to become even richer and wealthier. The war wasn't even over, and you were all back, with "earned" money, to build castles again and enslave people again. When is it enough?"

He was indeed in very harsh times, medically and emotionally for many months. Thank God he is finally feeling better. His main problems consisted of possibly losing his wife to cancer and then experiencing akathisia when stopping an antidepressive/anxiety medication. I can tell you akathisia is hell and I went through it myself for several months, however my situation was due to taking a drug and not from coming off one and thankfully my symptoms immediately cleared after stopping use of a prescription causing the side effect. Peterson suffered from this for months, meaning he wouldn't have been able to sit in place for more than a few minutes at a time, drive a car, watch a movie, sit down for a meal. He probably spent 10 hours a day pacing back and forth in his house or chain smoking cigarettes as was the case for me for 2-3 months straight. As far as the weird attacks on him I see them as attacks on his character. Many people today are trying to feel good about themselves through virtue signaling, whether that's saying shit they think sounds good or they are trying to be something they aren't. In most circumstances it involves someone trying to display unwarranted sympathy towards ideas they don't understand or aren't mature enough to understand or appreciate fully. And so I think these types of people are envious of Jordan having a truly mature and completely developed personality and character, something that one only develops through a long amount of experience. Today we get so many opinions from so many inexperienced people that Jordan is a definitive threat to them. A fake it till you make it personality type is never going to win an argument against a man like this. He's clear, he's concise, and he's right. He can show emotion, yet he is not emotional.

@sifil311 as someone who spends a lot of time in his mind thinking about complex ideas and topics like Jordan Peterson does you start to see patterns in life. You start to see the bigger pictures and the nests the make up society. These ideas he's expressing are not likely novel ideas he has, but him verbalizing his internal concept of the world.
I'm not saying that he isn't thinking about the question he's being given but he's likely already formulates answers to a majority of questions people can ask him.
If you have been watching him long enough it's really interesting when he gives a novel response. He stops talking and he will just sit there and think about it for 30 seconds to a min and then he will very carefully and precisely give an answer to question.

Many sensible people I know who are conservative have told me they have stopped following the news because it was too upsetting. Some people will not allow themselves to be radicalized.
It is otherwise, however, very difficult to not fall into the same trap that they have fallen into. Fanatical self-righteousness. When I heard people were gathered around a hospital blocking it off to shout they hope they police who were ambushed die and to tell the officers outside you're next, I very much wanted to be there with a paintball gun. But you have to not do that kind of thing, you vote, you petition your congressman, write articles, point to censorship, point to injustice against conservatism and conservatives. Engaging in battle leads to escalation.
And the left serves a purpose. They try to keep corporations in check. They try to keep the lowest from having nothing. Unfortunately, they have become quite corrupt and quite fanatically religious in their politics. This is pulling them from their purpose which endangers us. Something needs to be done about the far left's control of academia before it's too late. I hate censorship and thought police, so I am uncertain of the solution. I am fearful that we may be doomed to lose because we cannot stoop to their level without becoming actual fascists. I feel like a pacifist trying to defeat a militarist in war. How do you win a war of dialogue against people falsely using hate speech as a means to censor you and others on your side? Who control academia, the media, and social media? But of course, as always, the left hijacks this tragedy and uses it to propagate their flawed 'Black Lives Matter' movement, which generalises issues within the black community to 'systemic racism' as opposed to personal responsibility, crime rates within black communities, households. If we all did that, we would NOT need 36 rules, or JP, or 'winning' an argument with your wife/GF or partner, we would NOT need to win at all. Striving - accumulation would cease, 'greed' would cease to exist and would end. Marketing would die (yay!), and consumption would almost end, almost. We would all be more submissive, tolerant, NOT selfish, but giving and kind because of our love for one another. BUT, some ONE has to start first. You know it’s actually a kind way to tell the questioner off. I like Peterson, but his following is often extremely childish and short-sighted. Look at the way the questioner frames his question and tries to lure Peterson into his ideological thinking. He has an extreme hostile and arrogant view towards progressives, says there is a “red pill” movement of people that know the real true truths. By that he of course means HIS ideological truths. The whole red pill crap is the equivalent of progressive people that claim to be “woke”, think about that.

I think social media makes it hard to withdraw someone who is a bit lost and looking at their environment to decide on their political stance and unable to view things from an alternative perspective. When your friends, social group, societal status, online communities (twitter, Instagram, UA-cam recommendations, even TikTok) all cater and echo the exact same ideas, it makes it much harder to find where the balance is and causes people to fall deeper and deeper into one end of the political spectrum. And this happens on both sides, neither being better than the other...that was a lot to type out so if you read this please discuss my thought with me lol

Marxism / Communism / Nazism (yes, to me at the end of the day they are the same) / Antifa etc., will crush large swaths of people over generations if that fire gets out of control. History has yielded horrors beyond believe, we need to learn from it and not repeat the mistakes of others. Some times turning the other cheek can lead to the industrialized murder of innocent people by the millions before it is stopped, and what a price that will be to pay. Anyways, I hope you are correct and I’m wrong. Certainly if the vast majority of people followed the lead and divine teaching of Christ we’d be in a much better, safer, and happier place.

at turn of the 20th century "empire" was a debatable description. Collectively they covered a huge amount of land, had a very large collective population, their aggregate had a booming manufacturing industry, em PHA sis on collectively. But different and rapidly widening forms of govt, one had adopted a constitutional parliamentary system and widened the restrictions of who was eligible to vote, and culturally had always been quite autonomous n distinct from one another. Its not a very good analogy but one could argue they were as much or more a cartel, or akin IN CONCEPT if not always in practice, to the EU, OPEC, NATO. Their origin was entirely unlike any previous legitimate empire. As much like divided Germany after WWII as a genuine empire. All that said my reaction was very similar to yours when he made that statement. But upon some reflection I think wording aside he was on point. It was after all a token symbolic monarchy for the most part, and Ferdy wasnt even the monarch, only the heir apparent. He was killed BY a citizen of their supposed empire, I mean theres a lot more context and assertions what his motives were, at whose behest he was acting. BUT at the enda the day, it was an internal "empire" power struggle and all that it took to start a war unlike the world had EVER known or coulda imagined until it was happening was the act of a single killing by one of its subjects so yeah Id say its a damn good analogy. That it became a "world" war when in reality it was a European one, and that it was even that, not simply unrest which an empire would have handled internally, was due to others seeing advantageous opportunity in it. Ferdy WAS the next in line, for a token position or not, and Sarajevo knew their actions would escalate aggressions and WANTED TO. Compare that to a repugnant thug cop, just a beat cop who killed , no insult meant, but a regular citizen. One who was brutally and unnecessarilly murdered, that he was a POS n blight on society in NO WAY mitigated the policeman's OR his ambivalent peers' actions/inactions. And yes that part was absolutely meant as an insult. Cept unlike Sarajevo, for fork's sake the state had arrested the cop and formally charged him w/ murder before opportunists had washed their shopping carts and oiled the wheels before taking to the streets to "peacefully protest" Do you contend that they became as violent as they did, the anarchy was as prolonged as it was (assuming its accurate to speak in past tense) and as many cities IMMEDIATELY complied w/ their absurd demands to defund police wasn't opportunism to serve partisan agendas? That Austria Hungary was coming apart at the seams prior to the assassination or prestigious vernacular doesn't really affect his point. The tension and animosity preconditions were such that a single person and refusal to apologize (yeah yeah, but basically that's really all that it was) were all it took for WWI to occur. A more just society wouldn't have that cop walking the streets packing heat or a badge. Neither would it have the man he killed walking its streets. That doesn't mean the riots were about either of them, not really, they were the match and coulda been any number of things

The Austro-Hungarian Empire was anything else in these days then a major European power. More of a factual second tier power. It was only "important" in regard of size of territory and (very diverse) population.
And while its true that the killing of its heir to the throne set things in motion, it was hardly the real cause. The causes of WW1 are a complex topic, and there exist lots of different opinions and theories. The First- and Second Moroccan Crisis fe are seen as forerunners to WW1.

One side actually engages in debate, the other side tears down building to avoid it. One side sticks to axiomatic facts, while the other insist on emotional propaganda. If the other side can’t articulate an argument, in fact goes out of their way to avoid debating to begin with, then their “destruction” is inevitable

The point is that if you are aiming at peace, you are willing to gain a new perspective on your's and your contemporary's fundamental values or ideologies. Recognizing that your ideologies may be wrong is difficult no doubt especially when we live in a world where holding you ground is essential, but recognizing that you want the good for everyone and not just those who share your own values is the first step to progress into a better civilisation.

The questioner appears unawares that those he designated as “the left” are the ones doubling down and unwilling to have “intellectual” discussion, while he doesn’t criticize “the right” as an equal participant in that. JP deftly explains that it takes two to play out the escalating retaliation positive feedback loop. He does this without correcting the questioner, which I disagree with. I think he should have corrected the questioner’s biased view. But wholly agree with his recommendation to pursue peace and not victory. Additionally I’m glad that he leaves this crowd and the questioner with this: the very difficult choice to govern oneself, to practice restraint, and ultimately pursue individual personal victory to win against ones own malevolence. And not some battle against the malevolence perceived in others, too often brushed broadly as the radical left or the enemy.

    • @IamMiaga

I think it is a purposeful choice on Dr. Peterson's part to not correct. It's easier to influence people when you don't tell them they're wrong, because you get automatic push-back if you do. Here Peterson sows the seed for the idea in the listener in the hopes that the listener comes to the conclusion themselves, which they will very likely do.

It is the left that controls our culture. The mainstream news outlets, Hollywood, school, college campuses, social media platforms, corporations...Name me any mainstream conservative values that are portrayed in a good light in today's world? Both sides? Are you kidding me? The left controls the dialogue, not the right. All we have is fox news and talk radio. So to say they are equal participants is just willful ignorance. This country is going downhill because liberals and conservatives who once occupied the same spaces and environments are no more. Social justice has driven the conservatives and reasonable centrists from the table of discourse and now the only places we can engage each other without fear of social reprisal are here in comments sections on videos like these. Jordan didn't correct that man because he didn't need to. The left has all the power so the extremism of the left is tolerated while all facets of the right are vilified. The left is the major instigator of all this resentment. They have brought us to this point. Conservatives are more willing to engage in a dialogue, but the leftists in power have no interest in dialogue. Only conformity. One only has to examine their tactics and the language employed.
