      Soon I'll be 47, so I'm probably more than halfway to my expiration date. I don't have too many regrets from my 20s, save one. I had a job at a decent company for 14.5 years. The company wasn't dishonest, but it was a bit soul sucking to work there. Finally, I decided to leave and go in a new direction. It wasn't easy to step into the unknown and it wasn't a perfect transition, but I'm so glad that I did, because now I'm in a field that is such a better fit. My only regret is that I didn't leave earlier.

      I am happiest when I do moral and meaningful things.

    • @mdt471
      @mdt471 6 років тому +14

      Don't most of us equate doing what we believe to be meaningful with happiness? There is little real-world distinction between the two. This is what peterson does. he restates obvious truths in far more words than are necessary.

    • @grantlewis9925
      @grantlewis9925 6 років тому +107

      @@mdt471 Happiness can be very meaningless. Maybe you're happy when you're drinking or playing video games. On the other hand, something meaningful could be documenting/photographing the Sudanese genocide to spread awareness of atrocities. Or raging against the USSR despite the grave risk to your own well-being. That's not much fun and likely won't make you "happy", but it's incredibly meaningful. Even married life or raising children can be more meaningful than happy at times. Maybe if you're lucky you can find something that's both meaningful and consistently makes you happy, but that is most certainly a luxury. It's a modern delusion that the purpose of life is to experience happiness, thus the necessity of Peterson's dissent and the reason for your confusion.

    • @mdt471
      @mdt471 6 років тому +11

      @@grantlewis9925 Perhaps the confusion to which you allude lies in your definition of the word 'happiness'. You chose to attribute to it, synonyms like glee, cheerfulness, merriment and joy. These are appropriate. But so are the ones I chose when writing my comment...contentment, satisfaction, exhilaration, fulfillment. When I volunteer at a nursing home for the terminally ill, I experience none of the feelings you use to define happiness, but I feel happy . Happiness is not a thing, it is entirely subjective. Some people are happy to bully or steal. Don't believe that you can wrap an assessment of life experience in a neat package. You are absolutely correct in what you believe, but only according to one perspective, yours.

    • @grantlewis9925
      @grantlewis9925 6 років тому +25

      @@mdt471 therein lies our misunderstanding. Your use of the word "happiness" is overly-broad leading you to misinterpret Peterson. Peterson uses the word as it is intended to be used. 'Happy: feeling or showing pleasure or contentment.' It is emotional and often fleeting. Even a successful, content person leading a meaningful life will experience pain or anguish and that's fine. Happiness is not implicit in (nor synonymous with) meaning - the two simply coincide from time to time. Those glorious moments when they overlap is when the tragedy of existence justifies itself, according to Peterson. All this to say, please don't write-off his ideas simply because you define terms differently (and less coherently) than he does.

      What's absent? The hierarchies themselves or people willing to say "we need hierarchies of competence"?
      As an editorial:
      I think we sometimes dislike the competencies that are (and are not) favored by the hierarchies, so it can be harder to desire genuinely engaging in the hierarchies.

      Being honest is what undergirds your relationship with reality. Trying to not say untruths or inconsistencies forces your perception of language to become more nuanced, or becomes easier as you consistently constrain yourself to those standards. You can approach perfection in construction of a semantic form, as an expression can approach "perfection" like 8/4 = 6/3 = 2/1 approaches simplest most efficient and effective forms. But being okay with the imprecision and inconsistency of 51/25 being a close enough representative meaning of 100/50, makes you incapable of simplifying an expression to the simplest accurate form of a meaning.

      I think the advice to "take risks" is over glorified. The actual advice should be "take calculated risks" which in essence isn't even risky at all, since there is more gain then to lose. Life is about risk vs reward, investment vs return on investment.
      The achievement of excellence in any field never comes from a blind leap of faith, or randomness in general. But rather, there are always a multitude of factors that bring the end result. And so what then am i suggesting? I would say that mindfulness, calculations, and prioritizations are the way to go.

Today the world has become very complicated, is constantly changing and gives most people way to much choices. It seems almost inevitable to make wrong decisions all the time, even if you are just choosing a chocolate brand. You could say that our life is too short now for this complexity. NO?! Most of the work you do as a child is becoming a person and if your parents decided for you, you wouldn't have the drive yourself to learn and try and be strong, perhaps you wouldn't have any dreams to live up to. On the other hand, that can be done sooner or later and around twenty would be plenty, because it isn't too late to do something or too soon to have some sense of what you're doing

Change from dominant ideas of today that are destroying our world can only come from from enough individuals changing their values and thoughts. The Age of Enlightenment that gave rise to the American Constitution took centuries to form and mature, and its following decline that we are seeing today took two hundred years. All through the power of many individual efforts accepting what they believe. We can change the world through the power of ideas. In the case of Jorden Peterson I would say his ideas can help us towards a New Age of Enlightenment. Each of us will have an individual responsibility to see this happen.

    I've never been more impressed by secular (not obviously God based but still God based) talk. Dr. Peterson has a gift and he works incredibly hard, endures loads of criticisms he doesn't deserve to be given and helps me every time I listen to him. EDIT: Just noticed the thumbs up on this video. Very few videos have over 200k thumbs up. That just screams pay attention.

      I would be afraid to converse with him. Because he would deconstruct any and all "scaffolding" psychological and intellectual structures that I have. He mentions this in one of his lectures included on this channel. Most of us have "scaffolding" that is pathological, or we can soften it and say "less effective than it could be", somewhat as how he describes the situation with the Harvard students that he mentions in this video. I am in a place in life right now where my "scaffolding" no longer works and is literally holding me hostage on the verge of heading towards self-destruction. My "scaffolding" worked for some time and for some of the aspects of my life, and I made some achievements with it that one could be proud of, but the "misery of life" he posits quite often (also in this video, I believe) has gotten the better of me. So much that I have to dismantle my "scaffolding" and built a different one. He mentions this process in a different video, and states that when you do that you find yourself in a very hard place, because you experience "nothingness" before you start building new "scaffolding" that will serve you on your pursuit of your new/adjusted plan. That is the place I have to go to, and it is very scary.

      Most of his videos are good. There was a video he made about discipline. The intro showed a fat Black woman eating a Big Mac. Had fat people and gyms in the intro. It strikes as being a stereotype that fat people are lazy and not disciplined. A person can have a vitamin deficiency and not know it. Not having a fundamental vitamin in their body causes them to eat, because they are searching for the absent vitamin. There is no balance in their body, so they overeat. You can go to a doctor, but doctors do not always perform tests for this. Disappointed that he portrays fat people as being. greedy and lazy
