Renegade Kid was literally one of the most wasted companies ever in the DS era. They pitched Silent Hill, Crash Bandicoot, Mutant Mudds, etc all showing extreme proficiency in the hardware, but were just left to make the two Dementium games and Moon. Then they went into the 3DS era at a blazing pace with Mutant Mudds new design and really utilizing the 3D feature very well and everyone was excited for their new game Treasurenauts. Then they proceeded to keep delaying Treasurenauts and do anything but that. They made two unnecessary remakes of their DS games, with Moon being cut up into pieces, whilst delaying their release in Europe, and as an RK fan on NZ, made me very sour to their company as Moon was eventually released with no hype surrounding it and blaming us for not buying their game. They also made Xeodrifter, a short and sweet Metroidvania that probably would have been received much better if they took more time on it and actually finished Treasurenauts. Like, what were they thinking?
I think I remember reading an article of Maximilion and the Rise of the Mutant Mudds in Nintendo Power many years ago and thinking "this could be interesting, can't wait to play it" then some time later, they brought it up again in its new look and I was like "huh, wonder why they changed it?" Still enjoyed the game regardless, but it kind of makes me wonder what it could of been in its 3-D form. Could be a revived game in the future maybe titled Mutant Mudds 64 considering the DS graphics have the look of a more improved 64 game.
My favorite video series returns! Usually watching these videos there are like 3 or 4 games I really want to play. This time I would have loved to try them all. They all looked really polished and I'm surprised. Raid over the river looked awesome and a 3D mutant mudds is very interesting, especially that water jet pic mechanic. Great video Pete!
It's surprising that Crash fell by the wayside, it was always going to be an easy sell, and from that short demo it looks like they had something solid in the works. And the name itself was a no-brainer, I'm surprised 'Crash Landed' hasn't already been used. Mutant Mudds looked decent, maybe a precursor to something like DeBlob or Splatoon as a kid-friendly shooter, not much else like it on the DS as well. But then F/TPSs would always be tricky to sell without the analogue controls. Space Agency looked right up my street, at least going by the short premise and three available screen shots... And I've always got a soft spot for some iffy translation.
Yeah, Crash Landed is a good name, surprised nobody has picked that up! Haha, who doesn't love a dodgy translation. Have you watched Star Wars The Third Gathers: Backstroke of the West?
@@LeBossu77 You'll love it. It started with a Chinese bootleg of Episode III which had terrible English subtitles. Then some guys dubbed the entire film back into English using those subtitles as the dialogue. The result is hilarious. The whole film (2 1/2 hours) is on UA-cam.
Another well done Video as Alwyays. I guess It was for the better that Crash game never realse It and That Space Agency ? Woaw That may be a hiiden Gem to the DS Library
That shooter would have been awesome on the DS one genre that lacked on the handheld, I love gauntlet and that version showed a lot of promise also shame it didn’t make it Another great video to the series mate
Midway just has this ability to leave a sour taste in their fans mouth. Like if they went with literally any idea it would sell like hot cakes. Like imagine the thought of a Gauntlet Dark Legacy remake. Kind of sad that Midway never jumped on that.
Another great vid Pete. The DS is one I never spent a lot of time with. Probably because I’m not too fussed on handhelds although loving the Switch! Looking forward to the next 🙂
When the Ruvas Forest song kicked in I had legitimate Vietnam flashbacks. [edit]: personally none of the games shown here were of my interest, sadly. Maybe just Clayfighters since the DS is not really the ideal console for fighting games (or any handheld, really, but that's personal opinion).
well on the plus side gauntlet Ds (known was included for ds station n.9) there out there the illusive 100% complete game to be played. the only other cancelled i dare was public release was of course raid over River DS has the nanostray charm to it very shame was canned.
I just found this Ds prototype 2 days ago on eBay . I have never seen this before “ duke nukem DS” it is unreleased I can’t find it on unseen64 and have never seen one on google my friend plans on making a video on UA-cam tag : DScapades
What a shame the DS really could have done with some more shooters shmups! a genre that didnt get enough love. Clayfighter needs a revival full stop! Gauntlet would have made for a great handheld game too!
"Activision favored other crash games at the time"
Other crash games at the time development: Cricket noises
😂
At least out of all the crap, we finally got the Crash N-sane Trilogy, Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled, and Crash 4: Its About Time.
I wonder how programmers feel when they have done many many hours work for a game and then it's just cancelled.
not just programmers
I'd imagine that it's heartbreaking for all involved.
0:46 "How the heck did we learn about Geist DS? That game was cancelled we weren't supposed to anything about it."
Um, all these games were cancelled...
That Crash game tho...
Also I would've loved to play Mutan Mudds 3D, man.
They look great!
Activision was a fool to reject the project. Renegade Kid used to be a wizard on the DS.

Awesome video! Loved this. And you mentioning sadness on Wii genuinely makes me sad. I was super excited for it when they first announced it.
Thank you!

Yes, would have been interesting to see how it played it that form.
Halo would of been epic, especially with the ds wifi being a thing back then
Yeah, would have been really interesting to see. Looks like it plays well too!

I would of loved that gauntlet game. Awesome vid as always pete 😁👍
Yeah, looks pretty decent that! Thanks, Steve.
Looking at the gameplay of Emperor: Rise Of The Heroes reminds me of Lego Battles. Lego Battles is a basic but fun RTS.
Interesting... Never heard of it!
Thanks for another fun video from my favorite series.
You're very welcome! Thank you, kind words indeed.

Definitely, that looks great! Thanks, Scott.
I'm surprised you haven't tackled the cancelled Wii U games yet. I know a good number of them.
I've covered most of them already in other episodes, so I'll probably give it a miss.
There is a retail finished version of gauntlet available online if you can find it to download
Nice!
We need these games either kickstarter, patreon, fan remakes

As of the Switch lite - RIP DS :-( you will be missed.

Thanks, Mat! Yeah I never had a DS until I bought my 3DS, but have always loved handhelds. I'm loving the Switch too.
Great info and video as usual 👍
Thanks a lot, Dan!
Do you have a list of all the cancelled DS games please?
A list of the games from this video, or all of them?
HALO?? Another rad list Pete!
Thanks, Marcus!
where can i download the roms? thanks!
I'm not sure, but generally if you google a specific DS ROM you will find a link.

@@onaretrotip Haha, don't worry dude.
That raid over the river looks fantastic, someone should do a shooter that changes time eras ...time pilot 3😍
Doesn't it! Very Time Pilot.
I hate that we can only play few of these and most aren't.

Oh dear
I never notice that every ds games got cancelled so quickly in this beautiful era

Raid over the River looked like a cool shoot em up.....and Halo! That would’ve been awesome.
Definitely! Raid Over The River especially looks good.
Pity a lot of these weren't released
Yeah, always a bit sad making these.
I've never played a DS game I liked but can't help still feeling loss xD

I didn't buy any DS games until I got my 3DS, but it has a lot of great games. I particularly enjoyed the DS Professor Layton games.

Give me crash Landed. mutant mudds. clayfighter. motocross challenge.Gauntlet.
👍
I wish Crash Landed was released.
The DS version looked so great and solid.
Darn You Activision™, you screw it all.
Yeah, it looks decent considering the hardware.

At least we ended up getting the remakes of the first three games, remake of CTR, and Crash 4: Its About Time in the end.

huh, I see Raid over the River follows Dragon Ball Z time travel logic.
also there is a playable build of Gauntlet DS online floating around.

Sorry for the delayed reply; must've missed this comment. The music isn't from the original games, I added it.

I didn't buy any DS games until I got my 3DS, which I love. The Switch is brilliant, I'd thoroughly recommend it.
onaretrotip Spyro is the only game on the switch that interests me lol
