I just realised that there's a bit of missing audio at 4:09 - the full sentence should be "The four custom chips were merged into one multi-talented chip to save on manufacturing costs, and for the same reason they chose 3.5” floppy disks for the system’s media."
onaretrotip I call it chuckle vision!!
wow
onaretrotip can you do canceled crash bandicoot games
Um... I'll consider it. After I've done all the systems I want to (or can) cover, I'll definitely look at other topics, like genres or franchises.
A little bonus fact about the Red Jade: after cancellation, Sony bought Ericsson and used (most of) their ideas to make the PSP.
Oooh, interesting! Thank you.
I was at E3 in 2004, and yes, the Phantom was there. I did see someone playing it until it BSODed. I tried to get a picture, but they noticed me and quickly restarted the system :(
Hahaha that's hilarious.
The Phantom runs Windows XP Embedded, so it was a Windows PC with all non-gaming components removed.
Still, the Taito Type X arcade system was also a Windows XP Embedded machine.
I've never heard a vagina referred to as a "clowns pocket" before... this is new to me... thank you.
Well, it's used specifically to describe a large vagina (as in one owned by a promiscuous woman). Wizard's sleeve is another one. 😂
Yea that one threw me. I'm like "I didn't THINK you meant vagina . what's going on ??"
@@onaretrotip How do you find out all of these??? Ahahahaha!
@@pferreira1983 Common knowledge from childhood mate LOL
@@onaretrotip Ahahahaha!
Cancelled consoles are so forgettable that it's crazy to hear that some of these were actually shown at E3 and other expos. This was such a cool watch!
You're right, some of them really surprised me when I heard they were shown at Expos. Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
"Ever looked at your Super Nintendo and thought, "but this isn't enough to kill a man""?
Ahahahahaha.
I'm sure we've all been there.
"ever take a look at your Nintendo and say well this isn't heavy enough to kill a man" you cracked me up, that was hilarious
Haha thanks mate.
It's recently been revealed that there was another game in production for Hasbro's Controlvision (aka NEMO) when it was cancelled. NBA Jam producer Mark Trammel recently disclosed that he has all the footage shot for a planned Police Academy game based on the movie series.
Wow, that's interesting! Thanks.
They need to release that one!
Dude, I am devouring your content at an unprecedented rate for me! Getting the juices flowing for your upcoming Golden Eye feature 👌
Thank you very much mate! Really excited for the GoldenEye vid. Just hope people enjoy it.
@@onaretrotip you probably don't have to worry too much about that mate, the quality of your content absolutely shines with the passion you obviously put into it 👍
This channel just keeps gettin' better and better, my dude.
Ah, thank you very much. I'm trying to improve with every video.
Never even heard of half of these. Taito Wowow is a superb name for a console!
That's good news, Andy! Haha, yes it is.
Great video Pete
Some really obscure & crazy looking systems here. Awesome how some of them did see the light of day and that collectors have managed to get their hands on them!!
The Sega Neptune and the Panther LoL
Thanks, Craig! Yeah, some of them are pretty crazy ideas.
Awesome video Pete! Some interesting systems I’d never heard of. I clearly remember the hype train behind the Phantom though.
Thanks, Ryan! Yes, the Phantom caused quite the stir.
Nice, I had never heard of the Red Jade before. It's always nice to learn something new, especially regarding retro-gaming history! Thanks man.
That's great! Glad you enjoyed it, Charles.
Hey Pete, superb and very informative video mate, there's quite a few systems here i'd never heard of before so thanks for making me aware of them. Good stuff.
That's good news! Thanks for watching, Dal.
Another good video Pete! Thanks for making these!
Thank you! I really enjoy making them, and I'm glad people watch and enjoy them.
I remember hearing about the phantom! Then it just disappeared. Thanks for reminding me about it. I did have an interest in the phantom.
You're welcome, Gerald!
So awesome man, seriously great list! The Phantom Pump & Dump scam wow what a name for a scheme lol
Thanks, Marcus! Hahahaha yes indeed.
Great video, thoroughly enjoyed that. Knew about some of them, but definitely some I had never heard of before
Thanks, Tony! Glad you liked it.
Great video as always Pete, really enjoyed this one. 👍
Thank you! So glad you liked it.
Another great video as usual! Nice work!
Thank you, Gustavo!
This is one of your best videos i think the Sega vr and Konix and M2 all showed alot of promise
Ah, thanks a lot, Jeroen! Yeah I agree, especially the M2.
"And I mean a literal clown's pocket, not a vagina." LOL
😂
enjoyed that Pete , this was my favourite out of the series , you've certainly put some work into the vids dude , fair play 🖒
Thanks a lot, Craig! Glad you liked it. Took fucking ages this one hahaha.
Great video thanks for making it, very informative.
Thank you, Kevin! Glad you liked it.
Great list, really enjoyed the video :)
Thanks, Dan! Glad you enjoyed it.
Fantastic video Pete! Such a shame about the M2... followed that closely back in the day but sadly it wasn’t meant to be!
Thanks, Russ! Yeah, it was definitely promising. A shame Panasonic left the console market.
Great job on the video. It's nice to learn something new.
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it.
Love the midi version of Smooth Criminal playing. 😊
😃👍
I really enjoyed your video. Excellent narration and I learned a lot. I was surprised that the two games Sewer Shark" and "Night Trap" was shelved for years due to the in-affordability of buying CD type games. They are so cheap now. I remember the late 1990's and itching to get a CD burner, and of course blank CD's which where almost a buck or two for one dollar in 1999 if my memory serves correct. Anyhow, thank you for your enjoyable content. God bless.
Oh, thank you very much. Too kind. Glad you enjoyed it.
The Cosmos was scrapped because CEO Ray Kassar didn't want any internal competition for the Atari 2600. It would also be the reason that the 5200 would be delayed to market and some other internal projects were cancelled as well.
BTW never heard of several of these, so nice research. The Ultravision would have been a really cool Vectrex-like self-contained system. And I'm still disappointed the Panasonic M2 never came out because the graphics were about halfway between the N64 and Dreamcast and would have come out just slightly after the N64. There are rumors that the manager responsible for the $100 million buyout of the M2 tech was shunned in a very Japanese way by relocating him to work somewhere very cold like Alaska or Siberia.
Thanks, glad that at least some of them were new to you. Hahaha that's hilarious, and I can imagine that's true.
If the Sega VR was released I would've called it the "Virtua Reality". (18:41)
Sega, hire this person right now!
The Satellaview wasn't a commercial failure. Considering it was only available in Japan, it did pretty well.
Did I mention the Satellaview in this video? can't remember.
I like your creative intros! Awesome touch
Thank you! It's fun doing them, and nice to have a bit of variety.
I just recently watched the Spike Lee movie Clockers, and the main character buys this little kid a Sega VR headset that he wears in several scenes. I was wondering WTF that odd looking thing even was, but now I know! Must have been made before it officially got cancelled! They don’t really specify in the movie that it’s made by Sega. Spike Lee was probably given a free one by Sega for a kind of more subtle product placement (due to the lack of logos or specification). Pretty good movie BTW! Messed up as hell, but good.
Interesting! Not seen that; I'll have to check it out.
I think the Neptune would have been a cool idea but ah the Konix such ambition but not enough horsepower...
Yes, the Konix was just a mental idea in all honesty LOL
@@onaretrotip absolutely loved the concept and always love for the underdog, but when I saw the video footage of the tech demos running years ago on the old Telegames VHS What Videogames System? tape, my god it hit home just how underpowered the system actually was.
Great video as usual!
Thanks you!
Nice moonwalker background music! Such an awesome/weird game, with joe pesci as the final boss lol
Thanks! Haha yeah it's awesome.
I always remembered the hype round the Matsushita 64 which was in Edge mag for a while then it vanished.
Yeah, there was certainly a lot of excitement for it at one point.
I dig the design and concept of the Ultravision, also the Panasonic Jungle reminds me of the GPD Win 1 & 2 today
Yeah, the Jungle definitely shares similarities with the GPD!
That Sega VR thing actually looked really good for its time. Good one, Sega!
Apparently so good they had to cancel it hahaha!
Awesome video as usual.
Thank you!
My favourite of the list: the Ultravision of course. The only parts missing are a clock radio, and an 8 track player. Well, and maybe a toaster. The only system you'd ever need!
Hahaha, exactly. It could have done it all!
Everything should have an 8-track player!
Taito Bowow is the ruler of this list. With a name like that you cannot resist.
What had me was a game system that played video cassettes for games.too much repeat based imprinting on that.
I remember that maze game they show in the ad. It was basically a Pac-Man clone with a gigantic (for that time) maze, where the characters were just dots moving around. The player was followed by a magnifying glass. I played it on my Apple ][ (compatible). One of the very few Pac-Man clones I actually liked. It's called Dung Beetles and had some rudimentary speech synthesis: ua-cam.com/video/RB-y4qHI7cQ/v-deo.html
Another great vid, sir! I never knew about the Atari Cosmos. Knowing me, I would have been interested in getting one if it came out just cause it is would have been an Atari oddity.
Thank you! Ha yeah, I bet you would.
Awesome video Pete! That's crazy that all those consoles never got to see the light of day. I think the Sega Neptune and Sega VR could have made it out of all of them.
Thanks, Mark! Yeah, I'd love a Neptune right now, and I think the Sega VR would be really collectable.
onaretrotip yea I've seen videos of people modding a Genesis model 2 and shoving a 32x board inside to creating a Neptune.
O_o
I’m still upset that the Sega VR never arrived. :(
Yeah, I'd imagine that they'd be quite collectable these days.
onaretrotip I just want to get seasick from the comfort of my chair while gaming. 😂
I believe Kalinski said in a more or less recent interview that one of the reasons for cancelling the VR was that it did not meet people's expectations, as the technology was not able to provide graphics up to the standard people considered Virtual Reality.
GameHammer Classic Gaming but there was likely a cheapass aiturnitive way of getting VR on the genesis called the victormaxx .
I know. Don't all VR headsets give people motion sickness? And what kind of an excuse for canceling it is that it's "too real"?
My favourites of these consoles are the Taito/ Wowow, Neptune (they should have skipped the 32-X add-on), Indrema and to some degree the Konix Multi-system, which would only be viable with a good compiler that would mask the complexity of the different chips in the system, a bit like the excellent ASM-One for the Amiga 500.
Totally agree regarding the Neptune - they should have gone with an all-in-one system to begin with rather than making people buy two separate bits of hardware.
Subbed just for the line “I mean a literal clowns pocket not a vagina” 😂✌️
Hahaha thanks!
I startled at that too; Vagina???
Awesome video very informative
Thank you!
5:47 Had one of these way back and it was terrible. It was massive and only had 4 measley suckers to anchor it to the desk and moving the controller up and down in flight mode frequently saw it come away from the desk causing my plane to crash.
Hahaha!
I remember bad influence talking about the gamesmaster console didn’t think it would come about at the time ... sega vr would of been nice to see along with the Panther but that wowow would of been excellent ... great research brilliant video as always .. cheers pete
I would have liked to have seen the Sega VR, and the Neptune! The WoWoW would have been great to see the Taito arcade ports. Thanks, Adam! Glad you enjoyed it.
I always have to appreciate Aladdin music in the background haha. Sounds like the Genesis version.
It is indeed the MD/Genesis version! Great music.
I feel like the mid 90's were a time when every developer was in a race to put out cutting edge hardware that was just ahead of technology and too expensive to manufacture and develop for. I would have been happy at the time with just consoles that could make better sprite graphic games.
I couldn't agree more. Had Sega done that they might have had better success.
The Phantom was meant to compete with PlayStation and Xbox. The Atari Brain Drain was in development after the Pong Consoles became a fad in the '70s.
The Hasbro Control-Vision had a great features. Had it been released, we could've had games like Transformers and My Little Pony.
I love it when Sega experiments new things, but scrapping a few like the rumored Sega Neptune.
So you're saying we missed out on a My Little Pony game??? O_o
Well it depends. It was the '80s and My Little Pony was in its early years. We could've had a My Little Pony game on either that or on the NES until recently. And don't get me start on that awful Transformers game from Japan.
Another awesome video Pete
I remember getting excited and couldn’t wait for the Konix back in the day with all the hype in the magazines 😂
And I remember being so disappointed when Sega didn’t release the VR for Mega Drive
But I think the console which would have been the most promising from my view point would have been The Taito machine with arcade Perfect ports of some of my favourite games 😍
Thanks, Scott! Agreed, I think there are a few people disappointed that they didn't get those perfect Taito ports.
Darker themed background music would bring a more mysterious feel to these subjects.
*cue X-Files music
I sooo wanted the Sega VR when I first started hearing about it back in the day.
It looked so damn cool at the time.
Great video Pete ! PS there are also home made sega neptune consoles out there
Thanks, Dennis! Oh wow, I'll look that up.
I think Hasbro's "Scene of the Crime" footage is shown in high quality in a Night Trap doc I saw recently.
Ah, nice!
The Ericsson Red Jade sounds suspiciously similar to the later introduced Tiger Telematics Gizmondo... both from Swedish companies, oddly enough.
Indeed!
As an avid player of Final Fantasy 14. The Panasonic Jungle sounded like a great idea, but at the time, way ahead of it's time. Could easily be done today if bundled with a data plan when not on wifi. It'd make more sense releasing it today than 2003.
Agreed. It was not the right time at all. What a shame.
Great video
Thanks, Michail!
Never heard of Ultravision back in the day, but that one would have been *really* cool. I followed the Konix Multi-system with interest, but how on earth would they've been able to do a motorized seat at an affordable price?! I also had high hopes for the M2 system, but in hindsight, maybe it was better it never happened. If Sega VR would have come out, it would probably have been a huge disappointment at the time considering the horse power it takes to output decent graphics at 90 MHz. Control Vision - interesting concept but would probably have been short lived due to the limited gameplay.
I think yes, most of these are probably better off unreleased. Sega had enough failures in the 90s as it is!
@@onaretrotip And I meant 90 fps, not 90 MHz... =)
still have a pamphlet advertising the Phantom
Sorry for the late reply, must have missed this comment. Oh, that's cool!
fantastic vid Pete. this was really interesting to see the tombstones scattered along the home console road. i wish nintendo had waited a while before releasing the virtual boy. they wanted to go full colour but couldn't do it for .. reasons, which i cant quite recall right now. so the VB was rushed out and failed.. not a cancelled console but certainly an incomplete one from what they planned.
Thanks, Ben! Yeah, it's a shame the Virtual Boy flopped as it's actually really fun to play.
red alarm is legit one of my favourite games of all time. like atari star wars VR! sort of.. lol
Yeah, good comparison! I like Vertical Force too.
2:33 hahahaha!! Dude, 😂😂 you even get an A+ on the delivery!
😂
Great Video Pete...
Cheers, Ian!
i think that the sega neptune would be a success if sega was a little smarter with their marketing decisions and had better third party support
They really messed up.
If combined 32X, Sega CD and Genesis on Neptune it was a simpler solution for Legacy Genesis along Saturn.
I was so disappointed when the M2 was cancelled. I loved the 3DO and was super excited for the M2. It was also a shame when the Phantom disappeared. The original design was hideous but the smaller 2nd version still looks quite cool. The Phantom is an interesting one, because it's idea from 2004 is pretty much what consoles have become (and Microsoft's download-only Xbox One is apparently coming very soon). One that was missing was the Atari Jaguar VR - I always thought that looked so cool!
Yeah, the second Phantom design looked pretty cool. A bit too ahead of its time as a concept sadly.
13:31 Ternimal or Terminal? :D
It's funny; this video has been up for six months and the first time someone commented on this was a few days ago! When I was editing I was like "Ternimal???" but it was too late to re-record it.
I first heard of the Sega Neptune, and the Atari Cosmos from a UA-camr I watched at around 2010 and still do sometimes known as Meltingman234 on his Forgotten Media series.
Nice, not heard of that channel/series.
@@onaretrotip It's pretty decent, and he still rarely makes new videos, I think the last may have been in 2017, but I don't remember if I have that bell notification on.
There’s also another system that was canceled by Atari which is called the Atari 2700. There’s a video about this system on Gamester81’s Channel. CHECK THAT VIDEO OUT !
Interesting. Will do!
What's cool about the Panasonic Jungle is that someone recently found a working prototype. They posted about it on the Pyra forums pyra-handheld.com/boards/threads/a-certain-rarity.83019/
Oh, wow!
Your video is full of a lot of knowledge. You seriously did your homework. The only thing that kept me from watching the whole video was your voice. You sound exactly like the person who does all those boring , yet informative educational EMPI videos. Gaming is my safe space. School is my hell.
Can't do much about my voice I'm afraid. I don't like faking being upbeat and over-excited like a lot of UA-camrs do. Glad you appreciated the info though.
the phantom could have been really popular if it came to be,specifically in hotels in my opinion
Possibly, but I guess we'll never know.
There was also a proposed handheld version of the Vectrex, but was cancelled when Nintendo released the original GB
I would love to see that, if only for curiosity's sake. Love the Vectrex!
There was a full colour one on the drawing board as well. If I remember correctly, the colour would be produced via mechanical colour filters that rotated in sync with a b&w source. They demonstrated a pair of glasses with a spinning filter that gave the perception of colour on a b&w Vectrex. I guess the spinning disk was too noisy or difficult to keep in sync for a consumer release.
There was supposed to be a sequel to the Jaguar called "Jaguar 2" unfortunately it was cancelled before being finished and the Action GameMaster looks weird
👍
Love the MJ music in the background lol
Classic :)
How would the Action Gamemaster even work? Would they make the console a television and the modules would have the console's hardware (like the Super Game Boy) which would make the modules more expensive than the console, Or would they somehow shove 4 processors (Remember the Genesis had 2 processors), 3 graphics chips, a PCM sound chip (I don't see why perfect emulation of all 3 sound chips will be needed), a CD decoder, a DAC and an lcd controller. Inside a relatively tiny device with no heat issues so you can make simple cheap adapters. Maybe it is somewhere in the middle, It contains a NOAC, a dumb framebuffer and a resonably fast processor. The modules add the graphics chip and sound chip and load an emulation profile on the processor. This will still be a lot to shove into a tiny device at the time, the emulation will be slow and make all but the NES adapter expensive, but it is the most obvious implementation I can think of.
Compare it to the Retron 3 which is 20 years newer and does LESS (no cd player or TV tuner). I can't find what processor the system uses but I doubt it is slower than 200MHz which is around 25 times faster than the Mega Drive and around 55 times faster than the SNES. It is still not portable and bigger.
Edit: I found the Retron 3 uses 3 System on a Chips. Not Emulation.
I know, right. It makes no sense. Even if it could work, how on Earth would they make it financially viable?
19:46 "Sorry guyz it's was just too good!" Uh huh, sure it was.
Hahaha.
We can say that the Phantom console... "disappeared"
Ill see myself out
BOOM!
The advanced video system from nintendo was also cancled,
It’s sad that the sega VR headset was cancled.
Didn't the AVS just become the NES/Famicom? Yeah, shame about the Sega VR. No doubt it would be quite collectable today.
I’m just saying, the Sega headset could’ve ended up like Nintendo’s fail. ._.
Good video, but I knew about most all of these already myself, but I think the SEGA Neptune could have done alright if they had not made the 32X an add on in the first place, and had waited on the Saturn another 2 years for the tech to mature a bit with a better architecture that was more easier to program for.
Thanks! Yeah, I think you're right there. They really made a mess of things with their 32-bit systems.
I would have killed for a sega CD back in the day but I always heard from my parents that Nintendo would make one and I couldn't get another one.
So I waited like a jackass
Sorry for the delayed reply; must've missed this comment. To be honest you didn't miss much; they were very expensive considering there weren't many great games.
The 3DO m2 could be comparable to N64 in some aspects, there are is a channel talking about it and showing previews here ua-cam.com/play/PLjnN8ZeZ9ors_wdYwgTBWfAaRDk1OqF7l.html
👍
The M2 is definitely my fav. I truly think Panasonic made a mistake not releasing it
Yeah, the M2 could have been great!
Good content!
Thank you very much!
@@onaretrotip No, thank you for the time and effort for something worth watching :)
Not to say that more was expected out of such a device but the Atari Cosmos system, the way the "cartridges" or "cards" snap into it to load an already pre-installed game reminds me of these little kiddy toy "CD players" I had as a kid. You'd put the little plastic music CD into this little fake Walkman-like CD player and all it would do to play music is the CDs had a little bump that would click into the device to activate the corresponding song. For a little toy I'd say that's whatever but for a system by Atari that's pretty cheap. Although, with these little Atari mini arcades nowadays, they have all the games built into the memory (Centipede, Pac-Man, Rampage, etc, whatever they are) and you are locked out of all but the one the device is actually advertising.
I had one of those toys in the 80s except it was a record player. Yeah, I think it is a bit of a cheap trick, but (like you say) it's pretty commonplace.
Sony's first console was the Playstation in 1995. By that very definition, they were not veterans on the gaming scene. In 1996 they were barely sophomores in the US at the time and depending on the month had not been released in the UK nor Europe.
panther looks like a small printer
LOL
I wanted the phantom so bad. It looked futuristic... And still does.
It does indeed!
Can you find any cancel games for the channel F Game unit
I'll certainly try, but I suspect it may be a dead end.
Lol the M2 turned out to be an ATM machine..to funny🤣
Haha a cruel fate indeed.
The M2 would have been fantastic if 3DO hadn't had Trip Hawkins at the helm. The Saturn could have been a much stronger contender if they would have just let the genesis be. Unfortunately, Sega had two captians and they did Not like each other. I honestly not think that any of the other systems would have fared very well. By the time they would have come out on the market, the established Kings would have walked all over them.
The truly unfortunate part is that ATARI shot themselves in the head by not establishing some kind of quality control on the enormous heaps of shovelware that pretty well cause the Game Crash. I'd say that if they looked further than 2 months into the future, we might have been playing on an Atari Playstation.
Yes, a lot of mistakes made here. Sega's Eastern and Western branches toe the company apart in the 90s. Atari really messed up with that, prompting Nintendo to install the Nintendo approval system. Hindsight's a wonderful thing!
I hope someone gets the hand of all the prototypes for each console:-)
Sorry for the late reply, must have missed this comment. Yeah, that would be great. I think many of them have already turned up.
I wish that the M2 came to be. It seems like it could’ve cleared the 3DO name
Quite possibly, yes. Sadly we'll never know.
Out of all the consoles mentioned here, the M2 could have been the biggest loss based on its apparent performance. If the Red Jade was able to live up to its hype, that would have been neat too.
Definitely, it would have had very impressive capabilities for the time.
@@onaretrotip With any luck it wouldn't have been too expensive if it was released. (I'm assuming you're referring to the M2 rather than the Red Jade due to that one sounding like a pie-in-the-sky idea which would have probably turned out like the Gizmondo?)
@@tempestfennac9687 Yes indeed, the M2. The Red Jade would no doubt be as well-regarded as the Gizmondo or N-Gage these days.
I remember my brother trading in his Genesis and awesome library of games for a 3DO, instead of saving and getting a ps. Ouch. Neptune should of came out it would have done well , sega really messed up. And Nintendo Playstation, just think how incredibly that would of been.
Ouch!
I wonder if there’s any more cancelled consoles out there?”
Probably!
Very interesting.
Thanks, David!
