Jennifer won a Grammy for writing this song and Sugarland won a Grammy for the performance. It also won several other country music awards. Her voice is so amazing!
Can’t tell you how many reactors I’ve seen watch this and just didn’t get it. You got it! Lyrics are important. Real.
I knew he would get it!
It is easy to miss the early lyric, "It's just another CALL FROM HOME, you'll get it and be gone..." that sets up the scenario that his wife is calling him and the singer is the "other woman."
Same. So many people miss the flip
This was a one take recording due to how emotional it became to her. Kristian on the guitar wouldn't allow another take. 😢❤Stay safe
I've never watched one of your reactions, but MAN I appreciate how much you paid attention to the lyrics. So many people get caught up in her beautiful singing ability and miss the brilliance of the reversal towards the end of the song.
I absolutely LOVE this song so much. I have cried far too many times to this song. As a matter of fact, when this song came out, I was in this situation. I was the "other" woman for 5 years. I was so dumb and so in love. Kept believing he'd leave her. He loved me, but obviously loved her and his family more. This song inspired me to walk away from him amicably. That was 17 years ago that I left.
People think she wrote this about her divorce but they ARE WRONG. She wrote it in 2003, her divorce was in 2007. Jennifer said there was NO cheating. Nettles explained that she wrote the song in 2003, and it was inspired by Reba McEntire's "Whoever's in New England. This song of cheating and betrayal was the first Sugarland song written entirely by their singer, Jennifer Nettles. It was a #1 Country hit in the US. The song is about a woman who is having an affair with a married man who keeps promising her that he's going to divorce his wife to be with her. By the end of the song, she realizes that he's not going to honor his words, and she tells him to stay with his wife instead. >>
Correct.
But man does she feel every word written and sung.
I love this song! It was inspired by Reba McEntire's song "Whoever's In New England." Mettles wrote her song in the view of the mistress. She has said that she has never been cheated on but she knows how hard and painful it is....a lot of people think her ex husband was cheating but he wasn't.
This is one song no matter how many times I hear it, still gets in the feels
One of my absolute favs of hers!!! She's an amazing singer!!
Mine too
They wanted her to do another take, but Christan Bush said NO it was too much for Jennifer. Way to go and protect Jennifer.
Jennifer and Taylor Swift have a song called Babe. Taylor wrote it, Jennifer sings the lead. There is a music video you might enjoy
I love that song Babe as well. Both songs are amazing.
The producer for the video wanted a second take. Her bandmates told him hell no because of how hard it was on her. Those emotions are real
This song is genius - it is the POV of the mistress. Jennifer was going through divorce and her husband was cheating. She wrote this song and the rest is history. The amount of emotion she puts in this song is heartbreakingly beautiful and powerful
No, her husband was not cheating on her. You need to look up the story of the song before you comment rubbish. Nettles herself has stated she has NEVER gone through that!
She wrote this song because she was the other woman.
She has stated over and over that there was no cheating by her or her husband but she was going thru her divorce and that’s why she was upset. Christian the other part of Sugarland said no more takes after the director of the shoot wanted more takes, because she was so upset. So her crying is real but just over the split of her marriage, them going their separate ways, but no cheating.
Nettles explained that she wrote the song in 2003, and it was inspired by Reba McEntire's "Whoever's in New England. This was released in 2007 same year as her divorce.
She was not cheated on.
She is singing in the POV of the other woman her going through a divorce during this time was her real emotions so raw and brilliant.
I remember watching Jennifer perform with the USO for our troops in I think, Iraq, and she had a soldier come up and play guitar for one of her songs. And I believe the soldier was her little brother.
No auto tune.... legit pipes....a rarity today
Thank you for listening to country music. My son is a rapper, won an award from Sir Mix-alot and he hates my country music 😂
She did this song live on an awards show I believe. Awesome performance!!
Live performance is even better and that says a lot about
The epitome of someone pouring their heart into their song.
There was a time that I felt this song to the core! Thankfully that time has passed.
Best reaction to this song that I've ever seen. Thank you!
Jennifer Nettles has one of the Greatest Voices ever! Love Her!
She is so real! ❤😊 Thank you
That song and especially the video hits you right in the feels. I love the raw emotion by Jennifer and how she’s hurting, begs him to stay with her, but develops strength as the song progresses until she tells him to stay away. This topic may be uncomfortable for some but Country tells it like it is and if there’s any emotion that you’re dealing with, this genre will bottle those feelings up and make music that will hopefully help you. Great songs along the lines of this one, about infidelity, realizing your mistakes, or even getting the courage to break free from a damaging relationship are All These Years by Sawyer Brown; Promises, Reasons I Cheat, and Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart by Randy Travis; It’s Your Call by Reba McEntire; Leave My Heart Out of This by Bryan White; I'm Not Strong Enough to Say No by Blackhawk; and You Were Mine by the Dixie Chicks.
Jennifer is such a powerhouse, and is just as amazing live! For a broadway feel I’d HIGHLY recommend her performing “it all fades away” at miscast. Also her video for “unlove you” is BEAUTIFUL and so is the song, with a similar theme xx
Love that you get it. It’s such a well written, clever song. So many just miss it and that drives me nuts.
Nice reaction, she is the "other woman. "
You should check out her singing "Oh Holy Night"! Her voice is so powerful in that song!
Best reaction to this song I’ve seen on UA-cam!
New subscriber here..Loved your reaction and understanding of this song and her emotional condition.
I don’t like cheatin’ but I like that song
I've heard this song live a few years ago in London UK at country 2 country you could hear a pin drop I'll never forget that performance made the hairs on my arms stand up.
The whole performance they surprised us by turning up we didn't know blew the roof off left what a day and weekend that was 😊❤
Her partner told them it was a one take song because he saw how it was affecting her.
As A Black Woman in The Year 2000 I Started Going to Country Music(CMA) For 17 Years Straight and I Fell in Love With SUGARLAND and Especially This Song. I Went to Alot of Concerts and ENJOYED ENJOYED. THAT WAS GOOD TIMES AND I STOPPED IN 2017 WHEN THE PREDATORS WAS IN THE FINALS FOR THE STANLEY CUP, BUT Luke Bryan STILL SUNG ON THE ROOFTOP. COUNTRY MUSIC FANS KNOWS HOW TO PARTY AND I WAS THERE FOR THE PARTY, YEAH
This song hits me so hard. I’m at the beginning of a divorce after being married to who I thought as he always told me that we would be forever. We have a 8 yo special needs son. I found him talking to another woman about a month ago. He treated me like he was more mad at me and never had any reasoning. Shortly after he moved out. I put everything I have to our son who also doesn’t understand. I feel so broken and can’t help but constantly ask myself what is wrong with me. Why doesn’t the man that I married and was so true to. I am working so incredibly hard to help our son get the right help he needs along with myself learning how to help him flourish. I just don’t understand how someone who was supposed to love you and his child so much , so easily just walk away leaving me all of the broken pieces to pick up. He provided for us and now I’m stuck not able to work because my son needs me 24/7 and with a broken heart
I absolutely have loved this song! Unlove You and Joey are two emotional songs of hers as well. And That Girl is another of my favorite songs of hers.
She also has a duet with Reba McEntire called "Enough" where Reba is the wife and Jennifer is the mistress. Fab song!
Beautifully written song, and that voice. Wow!
I used to sing this as loud as possible when I needed to let it all out. I love it. His hands by her is also another one I listened to a lot.
One of my favs songs. ❤
Great reaction. I love this song. I’d love it if you reacted to the live version of this song, when you have time.
I love love love love this song
She could sing the phone book and make it sound amazing!
So glad you caught the reversal in the lyrics! Several reaction videos do not catch that twist.
You need to watch her sing Oh Holy Night. Chills.
Yes! I was looking for this comment. Chills is exactly right.
If you like this yoi ought to check out her live performance with gabby barrett on American idol. Truly great harmonizing
Found your channel because of Taylor but I am absolutely loving your country reactions. Sugarland has a song called Babe that Taylor wrote. Check out the MV. Taylor’s in it. 😊
great song great reaction.
So Jennifer was raised in a religious family, her dad was a pastor he also sung in church, she wanted to be a famous singer everyone turned on down over and over again, and one day her now husband which is the guy playing the guitar heard her singing her signed her and they got married and the rest is history
Jennifer wrote it & was inspired by Reba McEntire's song 'When whoever's in New England', which has a wife's prospective on a cheater.
I’m not a huge country music fan either, but this is one of my all time favorite country songs! Such a great song, beautiful vocals, and so so much emotion! It still makes me cry to this day. Loved the reaction!
I’m going see Sugarland live in a few months, can not wait
Right now, I'd be e in heaven for one dependable car! It's preventing me getting to medical appointments since my old truck broke down a year ago. But it will be good. I have faith.
💖💖💖💖
You got it right....
Oh please react to her song called HIS HANDS LIVE WITH BRANDY CLARK ✌🏻☀️
BEST reaction I've seen for 'Stay', thank you!!!
Love Jennifer Nettles and sugarland…you should try
Little Big Town….so many songs to choose from…..
This song was not about her. She heard songs about wives talking about their husbands cheating and Jennifer said she never heard a song of how the OTHER WOMAN feels. So she wrote one. She did some good acting in the video
One of the best female country singers ever.
This song makes me cry everytime :)
I went through a horrible break up. My brother picked me up and dragged me to a karaoke bar i got drunk and sang this and cried so much
Love Sugarland. I don’t know what happened to them. Her heart is in this so much
You got it, brother. Not everyone does with this one. Good on you for paying attention.
True relationship
I went to see her in concert, she’s great
Tears are running down my
The other half of Sugarland is Christan Bush who has kin folks who own Bush's Beans.
So beautiful!!❤❤
You want to listen to a song with emotion check out Pat Benatar “Hell is for children”. This song was written by Sugarland. Now makeup, hair not straightened out, and she show real emotion
Love this song and a amazing cover of this song was done by Ronnie Dunn. It's amazing!
They wanted Jennifer to do multiple takes of the song but her partner said he’ll no because you can see the real pain come out of her.
Love your reaction!
Yep. She's the sidekick. The OTHER woman. You got it and many other didn't.
In the story, she's the mistress and she asks him to "stay" with her the first 2 verses but the third she has finally had enough and she says "stay" with your wife.
I'm so glad that you reviewed this song.
I've never made a request before ever to any channel, but I really had this idea few weeks ago that you would find this song very powerful.
The way that she flipped the lyrics and said just stay just stay with her I don't I don't deserve this. I don't have to live this way.
It's so powerful. If I didn't know better I would say Taylor wrote it.
This is a song based off real life. Her husnand was caught cheating on her and snd she decided to write song off mistress perspective
As a wife who has dealt with infidelity and loves her husband, this hit hard! ❤ I am still single 💔💔💔
You should check out "Babe."
Song by Sugarland, with Taylor, co-written with Taylor Swift.
She's singing like she's the side chic aka The Homewrecker
Hope this Helps....
Sugarland’s “Stay” is the first of the duo’s chart-topping songs to solely be written by singer Jennifer Nettles. Although she has never lived the storyline of the song, she knew the subject of betrayal is something everyone could relate to, yet she wanted to tell the story from a different viewpoint.
The song was written several years ago and inspired by Reba McEntire’s “Whoever’s in New England,” which was written from the perspective of a wife whose husband is cheating on her. Nettles knew countless songs written from that viewpoint but none from the other two people involved. She says most people don’t realize that even the person who is doing the cheating gets hurt as well.
“Even though the person who is cheating might think he or she is getting away with something, they know they aren’t living their highest truth,” she says. “And they wouldn’t be in the situation if they were just happy-go-lucky in the first place. Nobody is happy in this situation.”
Once she decided to write the song from the other woman’s perspective, Nettles was overwhelmed with emotions and says the song pretty much wrote itself.
Kristian Bush, the other half of Sugarland, remembers being blown away by the lyrics the first time he heard the song.
Bush says they often got odd looks from audience members wondering whether the song had anything to do with his and Nettles’ relationship. Bush is married and says his relationship with Nettles is a brother-sister relationship. His “big brother” instincts came out when they taped the video for “Stay,” as Nettles became overwhelmingly emotional.
Bush recalls, “Immediately, I was just like, ’Everybody stop. Stop this! Y’all leave the room. Y’all made her cry.’ I was like a knuckle-draggin’ dad or a husband or something. I was really freaked out.”
He went to console Nettles, who had stepped out of the room, and offered to send everyone home, saying they could continue taping the following day. But Nettles assured him she was fine and continued to cry during the next three takes, making it hard for Bush to watch.
“About that time, I’m spent,” he said. “It’s not even noon and I’m emotionally drained. They had to tie me down to watch all of this happen. It was like watching someone torture your friend.”
No she is singing. This is a live one take performance. The same thing you see with Reb and Chinchilla or Ren and Sam Thompkins
Please react to Hardy "Wait in the truck" Mind blowing video
Could you play Chris Stapleton singing "I Was Wrong"? It's really well done. Thanks.
This is probably one of the saddest songs I’ve ever heard. It’s very good but very sad.
Another genius song that is often forgotten is “Forgive” by Rebecca Lynn Howard (2002), a song from the perspective of the woman who was cheated on. Two of the best lyrics in a song like this “Forgive, that’s a mighty big word for such a small man…” and “forgive and forget, relive and regret.”
While she didn’t release many singles, she is a talented songwriter and has a powerful voice. She played and sang in Steven Tyler’s country group too.
Worth a listen!

During the time of the video, she was going through a divorce. That's why she cried
I think it was just her portrayal of the emotional pain in that situation.
you should listen to her sing RED DIRT ROAD, tribute ro Brooks and Done it is amazing........
They kept trying to get a good take until Christian stopped them and told them he wouldn't let her go through it any longer.
As far as I know, she was the wife in a situation like this
It is from the point of view of the WIFE!! Notice the wedding band they keep highlighting. She was going through a divorce at the time
As someone else stated. This was so emotional for her that afterwards, Kristian made everyone leave her alone cause she was emotionally drained.
You should listen to " I miss you a little " by John Michael Montgomery.
🔥🔥🔥💜💜💜
This is a truly beautiful song, heartfelt... did I say beautiful? Let me spell it out for emphasis B E A U T I F U L 😢
Jennifer was going thru a divorce at the time she recorded the song as she was the other woman s point of view.
