False….. Her husband did not cheat. She was going through a divorce, but no cheating was involved, she got inspired to write the song from the other woman’s point of view from Reba’s MacIntire’s song “Whoever’s In New England”

Nettles actually wrote the ballad four years prior to its release. It was inspired by Reba McEntire‘s Grammy Award-winning song, “Whoever’s in New England,” that tells the predicament of a wife who thinks her man is having an affair. However, Nettles decided to tackle it from a different point of view.
While there are a myriad of songs written from the viewpoint of a person betrayed by a lover, Nettles could not find one that sings from the perspective of the other two people involved. The singer-songwriter noted that most people did not realize that even those who are doing the cheating get hurt too.
So, Nettles chose to put the other woman’s perspective in a song - and the moment she did, she was overwhelmed with emotions that “Stay” pretty much wrote itself.
Even though Nettles has never lived the track’s storyline, she knew the subject of cheating and betrayal is something many listeners could relate to. Sugarland‘s other member, Kristian Bush, even remembered how he was left speechless by its lyrics the first time he listened to it.

Yes! As others have stated, this is written from the "other woman's" perspective. The subtle changes at the end show how she's fed up with all the broken promises to leave his wife and be with her. So she's telling him to stay (with his wife). So powerful.

Thr official video is much better…….she’s allows her emotions to be more open and more out there. It’s got to be so much harder for her to open up about something that has happened to her in her own life. Although she is singing it from the perspective of the other woman, not the hurt and betrayed wife.

I love at the end when she finally recognizes her worth, and tells him why doesn’t he stay… with the other woman. I think part of the prize of staying faithful and married to one person, is later in life getting to experience having grandchildren together. To look back at the life you’ve built together and reap the rewards of that hard work. Having a 50yr wedding anniversary party with kids and grandkids, all of whom are there and celebrating with you because of the commitment you made to your partner 50yrs earlier.

He turned around and looked at me. I had both our bags packed and when the song ended he turned to me and said “wow”. I picked up his bags and told him, don’t stay or I’ll go. He picked up his bags and left. The song got the message across better than I ever could!

She is singing from the mistresses point of view. She is so emotional because her husband cheated on her. To be able to see the other woman’s side is amazing and heartbreaking. You will notice in country music songs the song will start off with a certain lyric, but then they will flip the script, so that the words that meant one thing at the beginning of the song now means something completely different. At the beginning of the song, the mistress is begging the man to stay with her. At the end of the song she’s telling the man that he needs to stay with his wife because she’s not gonna deal with his crap anymore. Amazing song amazing reaction, thank you.

She is the "other" woman in this song begging him to stay.....what I love about it is in the end she realizes how much of her time and her love she wasted on him because he isnt going to leave his wife. And she gets the strength to tell him to stay with his wife because "she" don't have to live that way, in that kind of pain and turmoil. Hard lessons learned and deeply felt. Yep this song is a heartbreaker. It's wrong to have an affair with a married man but this song really captures how "wrong or not" doesn't make the hurt any less.

That song and especially the video hits you right in the feels. I love the raw emotion by Jennifer and how she’s hurting, begs him to stay with her, but develops strength as the song progresses until she tells him to stay away. This topic may be uncomfortable for some but Country tells it like it is and if there’s any emotion that you’re dealing with, this genre will bottle those feelings up and make music that will hopefully help you. Great songs along the lines of this one, about infidelity, realizing your mistakes, or even getting the courage to break free from a damaging relationship are All These Years by Sawyer Brown; Promises, Reasons I Cheat, and Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart by Randy Travis; It’s Your Call by Reba McEntire; and You Were Mine by the Dixie Chicks. Man, I’d love for you to react to those songs!!!

WHile this performance is really great for a live performance, it does not quite get to the level of emotional singing in the offical video. So do yourself a favor and go watch the offical video as well.

    THE STORY BEHIND SUGARLAND'S "STAY"
JENNIFER NETTLES INSPIRED BY REBA MCENTIRE'S "WHOEVER'S IN NEW ENGLAND"
    By Lindsey Roznovsky
    December 28, 2007/2:53 PM
Sugarland's "Stay" is the first of the duo's chart-topping songs to solely be written by singer Jennifer Nettles. Although she has never lived the storyline of the song, she knew the subject of betrayal is something everyone could relate to, yet she wanted to tell the story from a different viewpoint.
The song was written four years ago and inspired by Reba McEntire's "Whoever's in New England," which was written from the perspective of a wife whose husband is cheating on her. Nettles knew countless songs written from that viewpoint but none from the other two people involved. She says most people don't realize that even the person who is doing the cheating gets hurt as well.
"Even though the person who is cheating might think he or she is getting away with something, they know they aren't living their highest truth," she says. "And they wouldn't be in the situation if they were just happy-go-lucky in the first place. Nobody is happy in this situation."
Once she decided to write the song from the other woman's perspective, Nettles was overwhelmed with emotions and says the song pretty much wrote itself.
"You know, it was just in a couple of sittings on my couch," she explains. "And once the first line came, 'I've been sitting here staring at the clock on the wall. I've been laying here, praying she won't call,' the story just unfolded."
Kristian Bush, the other half of Sugarland, remembers being blown away by the lyrics the first time he heard the song.
"This is one of those first times when you become like Bob Dylan, where you are writing the character's story rather than your story," he notes. "And it's a huge moment, and I am humbled around people who write like this. When I heard that song, I was like, 'Oh, my gosh. This is a heavy hitter of a writer here. This is a monster of a machine that is about to write songs.'"
"Stay" was one of the first songs Nettles and Bush wanted recorded for Enjoy the Ride because they knew the song would resonate with fans. While headlining the recent CMT on Tour, the duo encountered several fans who gave them the strength to speak out in their own relationships. Nettles said she knows how hard it is to say something you know is for your own good but at the same time doesn't feel good while you're saying it. And in that moment of standing up for what is right for yourself, she says, you'll be amazed at how powerful and liberated you feel.
Bush says they often got odd looks from audience members wondering whether the song had anything to do with his and Nettles' relationship. Bush is married and says his relationship with Nettles is a brother-sister relationship. His "big brother" instincts came out when they taped the video for "Stay," as Nettles became overwhelmingly emotional.
Bush recalls, "Immediately, I was just like, 'Everybody stop. Stop this! Y'all leave the room. Y'all made her cry.' I was like a knuckle-draggin' dad or a husband or something. I was really freaked out."
He went to console Nettles, who had stepped out of the room, and offered to send everyone home, saying they could continue taping the following day. But Nettles assured him she was fine and continued to cry during the next three takes, making it hard for Bush to watch.
"About that time, I'm spent," he said. "It's not even noon and I'm emotionally drained. They had to tie me down to watch all of this happen. It was like watching someone torture your friend."

She wrote this song while she was going through a divorce. In the video, she had to stop signing because she was in tears

She is crying, because it is about her finally standing up to a guy who she was in a relationship with. He promised to leave and never did, and she finally had enough. The tears are real and her way of coping.

"Stay" inspired by Reba McEntire's ("Whoever's in New England," which is from the perspective of the wife). "Stay is from the perspective of the other woman. Even though Nettles has never lived the track’s storyline, she knew the subject of cheating and betrayal is something many listeners could relate to. Jennifer Nettles was married to bar manager Todd Van Sickle in 1998. They divorced quietly in 2007 the year that the song came out. The reason for her divorce from Todd Van Sickle was never disclosed by either party with Jennifer just stating the "I didn't get married in the spotlight, and I did not intend on getting divorced in the spotlight," she said. "It was private and sacred to me, and when you hold something sacred, you keep it to yourself." The emotional struggle that comes with divorce for what ever reason is what shows up in the video. The song was written 4 years before it was released. They divorced quietly in 2007 the year that the song came out. You really need to watch the official video for this song it is just what you see here; A singer with an acoustic in the background but was recorded during her divorce from Van Sickle.

Now that you've seen it live, you should watch the official video. You will see that the talent you heard live is exactly what you will hear on the studio album. She's AMAZING! Now you'll need to check out more from them. She also has some solos out. FYI trivia, the other half of sugarlad is Mr. Christian Bush of the Bush's baked beans dynasty.

In the official video, the problem they had wasn't Jennifer's emotions but Kristian getting too emotional. He's protective of Jennifer and with her husband cheating on her, he had a hard time doing the video so they kept having to redo it. In one shot in the official video as he turns his head, you can see the anger in his eyes.
