Also it was originally written in 1972 when the conflict in Vietnam was at its peak, and many men grew their hair out long in protest. That was used as a cutting thing to say , "What is that? A woman , or a man?"
I hear it on my radio atleast once a day on the '60, 70, 80s' station. It's still big to this day, hearing it played on the radio is why I even know of it. It's how I find most older music I like.
You guys haven't shown up on my feed in FOREVER. Turn the Page was my Daddy's favorite song and we played it at his funeral. He's been gone 16 years next month so I like to think he's speaking to me today. Thank you for reacting to this song for a broken hearted Daddy's girl that still needs her daddy ❤
I love the message of this song. It's the story of the rock star. The real story. That saxophone is lonely. It's so honest. One of those songs I wish I could hear for the first time again.
This song is all about the lyrics, that’s why the instruments are very minimalistic. In the lyrics, Bob is portraying the mental and psychological toll one takes being on the road so much as a musician.
"One night, (Prince) asked Matt Fink why the proudly working-class Detroit rocker had such a huge appeal; Fink replied that it was Seger's big, gut-punching ballads - 'We've Got Tonight,' 'Turn the Page' - that his fans loved, and that Prince should try writing that kind of anthem if he really wanted to conquer the pop world." He then wrote Purple Rain.
My first concert! Kansas City, 1986. "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" is very upbeat and you'll hear him all over his range, whereas "Night Moves" is a bit more subdued. For my money, the live version of "Travelin' Man/Beautiful Loser" is where you'll get the full experience of what he can do. It's on the same live record with "Turn the Page."
My favorite way to explain the genius and appeal of Bob Seger is a quote from Bob Dylan: "Some people think Bob is a poor man's Bruce Springsteen, but personally I always thought Bruce was the rich man's Bob Seger"
I'm not much of a Dylan fan, but that's spot-on. Bob Seger's lyrics are straight from the soul of the blue-collar man. Bruce Springsteen's lyrics are like asking ChatGPT to write working man songs.
We saw him on his 2019 tour. His voice was still great for his age, and he had A LOT of energy. One of my favorite concerts ever. My wife didn't know that she knew all of his songs, each time he started singing, her eyes would light up as she recognized another song that she loved. Don't be fooled though, Bob's voice is capable of amazing power!
I saw Seger and the SBB in '79, and the sax player (Alto Reed) started the song standing over the exit in the 3rd balcony wirh a spotlight on him. Amazing. One of my favorite shows ever.
Has there been a more honest song about life on the road as a musician? We're talking about the 60's, 70's. No fancy private jets, doing 2 shows in 2 nights, then having 2 weeks off. 5 shows in 7 nights in 5 different cities, riding a bus. Bands in those days EARNED their money.
Lyrically, "Night Moves" is utterly fantastic with a turn of the phrase at the end of the song. "Like a Rock" is full of ennui and regret. And the live version of "Travelin' Man/ Beautiful Loser" is so so powerful. Bob Seger is the king of story telling and nostalgia.
Traveling Man/Beautiful Loser off this album Live Bullet is blistering, both musically and vocally. Every single song of Live Bullet is stellar rock and worthy of reaction...every single song.
This song hit hard for anyone who ever played in a band and went on tour or even local bands that traveled to different cities in their home state. Bob is a National Treasure! Seen him many times in Southern Michigan before he went national. Many times after. Great storyteller.
I love that you guys react to so many different genres of music. So many people are so 1 dimensional when it comes to music. Legendary song. It’s timeless something that will be listened to for very long time. U guys got my subscription for this reaction. ❤
I’m so glad yall reacted to this song. This was my Dads favorite song and and when it comes on I get to be via with him for a few minutes. This song has so much detail go back and listen to the words, it’s a fantastic story.
One of his lesser known but equally fantastic songs is a cover of Tina Turner's "Nutbush City Limits". It will not disappoint, and for the record the two times I saw Seger in concert "Turn The Page" got him a minimum of 5 minute standing ovations...
For me, of a certain age, growing up in the state of Michigan... Bob Seger is like the sound of summer. Late nights around a bonfire with a good drink, good people, looking up at the stars, Bob Seger in the background. A lot of Detroit, southeastern Michigan is just the feel of this sound. Little rough around the edges, blue collar, the good kind of nostalgia.
Very much a song lamenting the boredom of a traveling musician. Sixteen hours to travel for that 2 hour high of the next gig, turn the page, and repeat. Jackson Browne does a similar theme in his song, The Load Out/Stay. For Seger, Night Moves is a wistful ballad of his passed youth and his first amorous encounter. Rambling Gambling Man is a much more uptempo rocker. Fire Lake gives me more of a Country vibe.
Bob Seger deserves every accolade and praise he gets! My favorite song of his that doesn't get a lot of attention is "Her Strut". It's got a nice guitar riff and of course that good growly Seger voice!
i wish you guys could've seen the smile creep across my face, knowing what's coming, when you first paused it and said "...this feels like it's gonna be this low-key thing, and it's cool, i'm loving it." That last kind of shout that he builds to is just fantastic. A lot of younger listeners don't understand what it was like to have long hair like he did back in the 60s and 70s, particularly touring in the midwest and south... that's what that section with the line "All the same old cliches, 'Is that a woman or a man?' / You always feel outnumbered, you don't dare take a stand" comes from. Guys would get cornered and beaten buy a group of guys for having long hair back then.
This song was released in 1972 and has stood the test of time. Metallica did their version on the Garage, Inc., album and did it justice. I'm glad you two appreciate this song like I have for over 40 years.
Glad you liked it… I’m not a big Bob Seger fan but the first album I ever got for Christmas in 1978. It’s got the song that you need to live on it. It’s a live album and it does Nutbush city limits by Tina Turner… But it’s a dual song because it goes into the song traveling man I think you would really enjoy and you can receive the voice that you’re looking for
Seger is singing with the intention to express tiredness in his voice like the road has beaten him down. This is why he does not use is big voice for this performance, most artists don't have this control and it's why Seger sings with so much soul. Other songs that require the big voice are "Even Now"," Roll me away","Fire inside". you would really like!
For George: Of the Seger hits you listed, the one that's going to give you the high voltage singing you're craving is "Hollywood Nights". I have a feeling that's going to be an instant Staylist for you.
Everybody is mentioning his later pop stuff, but for deeper cuts check out his early albums when it was the Bob Seger Sound System..the song Ramblin’ Gamblin’ man from that era is DOPE!!!
This is one of my favorite classic rock songs ever, such a good 'winding down at night' song. Just imagining yourself staring out at the dark country sky...
I am a huge Bob Seger fan. If you want to hear him really push it vocally, listen to The Fire Down Below, Nutbush City Limits, Down Home, (among many others).
This is surprisingly cool to see this on your platform. This song is incredible!! Good job by representing different genres and some what older ones too!
This song is exactly what it needs to be in terms of vocal strength and pace. Showing vocal restraint is just as powerful and strong as so-called pushing the vocal. It shows nuance, emotion, and ability more than just performing a pushed vocal run. Even as a kid in the single digits I was keenly aware of that. Bob Seger is rock and roll. Obviously, he's influenced by different genres as well but he's rock and roll. This song is definitely not pushed into "just" country or one genre. There is still an extraordinary amount of Bob Seger to listen to and I hope you enjoy the rest of the listening journey. You should definitely do Night Moves next.
Metallica did a good cover of this song on Garage Inc. This song hits me as being along the lines of Bon Jovi's Wanted Dead or Alive or Metallica's Wherever I May Roam, or Motley Crue's Home Sweet Home. ...That being weary from being on the road all the time...
Bob Seger is one of the all time greats. I will never be tired of Night Moves, Still The Same, and Main Street.
Main street just brings me back to the early 2000s watching the Red Wings at a bar in Detroit
Grew up with all that music in the late 70's and early 80's. I'm a metal head but appreciate good music in most genres except pop and new rap crap!
@@Dyenosaur00Brings me back to the late 70's...
Against the Wind
Night moves is a BANGER!
A guitar man, a piano man. a soul man. Bob Seger is rock and roll royalty. Not to mention a great American poet.
Bob Seger has an absolutely phenomenal catalogue.
nah
@@pooki903 Cool you have an opinion that differs from mine. Thank god I didnt ask you.
Bob has been my co-pilot on every single roadtrip I have taken over the past 40 years. No long drive is complete without Bob Seger on repeat!
that's depressing
Live Bullet album is a must on a road trip for 25 years strong
Just watch out for Hollywood Nights. You'll get a ticket if you're not careful.
❤❤❤
When Bob Segar wrote this song, he had super long hair. Hence the cafe "..is that a woman or a man"
Also it was originally written in 1972 when the conflict in Vietnam was at its peak, and many men grew their hair out long in protest. That was used as a cutting thing to say , "What is that? A woman , or a man?"
“ Come to Papa” and “Her Strut” funky and some dirty raspy vocals. 👌
He said Her Strut was about Jane Fonda
Bob Seger should be his own genre. You both will love his song Roll Me Away. 100% guaranteed.
This⬆
❤❤❤
This song was HUGE for 10/15 yrs. It was played at keg parties, blasted from cars, and everyone knew every word.
I hear it on my radio atleast once a day on the '60, 70, 80s' station. It's still big to this day, hearing it played on the radio is why I even know of it. It's how I find most older music I like.
Straight up , along with Zeppelin and Skynyrd! Always at keg parties during the 80's..
Bob is a great story teller in his songs. And his voice just has a ton of character. He can do it all, and has.
Watch her Strut and you'll get almost every aspect of his voice
My favorite of his.
This song is all about the lyrics, that’s why the instruments are very minimalistic. In the lyrics, Bob is portraying the mental and psychological toll one takes being on the road so much as a musician.
this is one song i can never say if i enjoy the original or the Metallica cover more.. i like them both, a lot.. for different reasons and it's ok!
I also like both versions but I got to go with the original as my favourite.
Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man is a song you dudes will flip out for! The kind of song you can listen to 18 times in a row and not get sick of it.
Also his first hit, with 17 year old Glenn Frey on background vocals
I still listen while watching the music video to this day
Lots of good song suggestions. Katmandu is fast fun and upbeat
Short, but a banger. I second that as well as Katmandu.
Roll Me Away, Feel Like a Number, Betty Lou, Horizontal Bop, Katmandu, Hollywood Nights and Rock and Roll Never Forgets.
👍
Fire Lake, Strut
Seger has an endless catalog of hits! Bob is a legend!
Bob Seger's voice is like a warm, sexy, unforgettable embrace that you never want to end.
Lord…that’s the truth!
As I am sure many will mention, this live performance is incredible.
Bob Seger embodies the feeling of when you sit in front of a campfire and fondly comtemplate your memories and mortality.
Alto Reed is the saxophonist. He was an absolute beast on the Sax. He unfortunately passed a few years ago
is that his real name lol
He lived here in South Florida for years before he passed away.

That's an awesome first concert!
And '86 was an amazing year. After all, that year gave the world me.😂
My 1st 4 were in 1986!! Great shows!!
Recorded Live in Detroit Michigan at Cobo Hall !!! Brother Bob, The Pride of Michigan
I was nine when my older brother took me there. I lived in Toledo Ohio at the time. 58 now. Lol😮
this song was played at my brothers funeral he loved Bob Seger he did kaeroke and this was his favorite song to sing thanks for the memory
My favorite way to explain the genius and appeal of Bob Seger is a quote from Bob Dylan:
"Some people think Bob is a poor man's Bruce Springsteen, but personally I always thought Bruce was the rich man's Bob Seger"
I prefer Bob over Bruce. But, I have to ask, with that analogy, what does that make John Mellencamp?
@@cirrustate8674 A spoiled whiner?
bruce can't hold Bob's jockstrap
I’ve always thought Springsteen was a better lyricist but Seger is a better vocalist. Love both.

I have been listening to his music for 50 years. I have always thought of it as Motown/ Southern Rock . The best of 2 worlds.
Kid Rock said "Bob Seger has paid more dues than all the artists in the current Billboard Top 40 combined". 'Nuff said.
Something I actually agree with Kid Rock about. Huh.
And Kid Rock just mashes Seger songs up with Skynrd and his fans think he's a genius.
