My goodness! this is by far the best tutorial ever! Some artist don't even mention about the pixels in their tutorials when it comes to clean lines and I'm looking to improve my lines without having any spills or mess ups. I just got my new Surface Pro 7 and I'm looking to change things up a bit!
Im using a Cintiq 24HD but i highly recommend any of the Cintiq series. It does give you an advantage when you are drawing but before these tablets came out... i was using an Intuos and i had the same results... i just needed to focus more :)
I haven't done anything to my pen sensitivity. Of course that the better the tablet... the better the results :)
And as for the steady stroke... i just use that for really complicated lines :)
its a combination of both! It just mean more pixels are being used so yeah the quality will be better. I always have it at 300 because i like to print my work too.
its not about the pencil size. You just have to observe the line thickness and quality and just adjust it to either thinner or thicker. I usually test it by pressing down really hard to see the thick strokes and i adjust it to be the size that would please me when im pressing hard.
Just had to say i've had my tablet and sketchbook pro for a couple of days now and this has been the most helpful thing I have seen, was wondering why everything looked so pixelated when I zoomed in, made smooth lines near impossible to get.
Thanks so much for this.
Yeah that is the PC version. The other thing i can think of is your tablet. What tablet are you using? The better the tablet the better the pressure sensitivity levels it has so that it can input more correctly your stylus.
thank you so much of these videos. I just got the program and have never worked on digital art before, you have helped me so much to figure out few stuff like the pixels and canvas size. because I had no idea what I was doing with those. It is wonderful that you actually take time and help others to figure stuff out. Huge respect for you for that. and again, thank you.
Even five years later this was extremely helpful! Options are a bit different now but this showed me what I was generally looking for and I was able to find it. Thanks so much!
No problem :) Its my pleasure to help :)
Thanks for actually answering these comments and questions!!!
I watched the Modes video and cried again...
I saw that one also tbh, and that's what made me curious. I got the trial and im still struggling on perfecting my lineart but im sure if I go through your tutorial videos more thoroughly I'll be able to fix that. Thanks again for these, they're very helpful.
Thanks Paris! Works Great. Can't wait to see the next Cherry Pin-up!
Thanks Paris Changed my settings to suit yours and a massive improvement in my clarity..........
Funny how I've been working in photoshop for so many years and pretty much have all my new documents open in 300dpi at 8.5x11... never thought I'd need to do this for sketchbook pro... HA!
Thanks man, really appreciate it!
Appreciate it, and I do. Finding a proper working resolution is basic for digital artwork.
Thanks :)
Once you set the canvas you have to start a new drawing. You cant fix your older pictures that were made on a lower resolution.
This was really helpful, will be redoing my alpaca now to make it high def lol
When i sketching... i use the whole canvas fit to view! When im adding details... i zoom in. When im cleaning up...i zoom in even more :)
well for my cintiq... it has a small program installed in my start menu were it's for configuring my Wacom tablet properties buttons with a specific software. Search for your tablet properties and you should find it
I always love to re-watch these videos and refresh my skills :)
My God! AT last! Thank you so much, this has been driving me crazy since I got the program and started watching you work.
dude, this is amazing. I thought you were like some tablet god, but now I have your powers!!
That is a pretty big canvas. Comes to something like 14"x7.5" when you divide the height or width by the rez. Awesome work!
Awesome!! You will love this software :) I also have an introduction video on the software if you ever need to work out were everything is ;)
Thank you SO much, this was exactly what I was looking for! :D
omg thanks!! the resolution setting helped me so much!
Wow thank you so much! I didn't realize such a little thing effected the way you draw!
Very informative. What cintiq tablet are you using, do personally feel that the screen improves your work rather than using for example wacom tablet and would you consider making a video showing your setup and workflow using the cintiq?
Great video, I wish I'd seen this when I first started. Took me ages of trial and error to figure out why my lines were so fuzzy. Thanks for sharing!
I dont have settings, just the default out of the box. But the Cintiq is very powerful
Yeah... its small, easy, quick and its the only software that i have seen that has a natural pencil effect :)
Oh.. and its very affordable too :)
First, thanks again for this tip, I knew about the dpi, but was never sure what res to put my canvas at. :)
Quick Question: for the sketching, to get the shadows etc, is that still with 300 dpi if the pencil tool is still that dark with little to no pressure? or am I missing something?
Have you tried to make the pencil thicker?
Oh yeah, it makes a huge difference! Now you will take your artwork to the next level :)
I have been wondering about this for awhile now, thanks for the help!
It sounds like a technical issue. So i recommend you send a message to either Wacom or Sketchbook Pro and they will give you the answer. I've tried this on the intuos tablets and Cintiqs and they work just fine.
hey there i love your pinup art character and the way you draw her.... its just so beautiful and you make it look so easy .. bu its hard for me to draw not just that i not experienced but the thing is that i use a "PC"!!!! not any tablets and touch pens .... :( so its hard to draw using the mouse.. so could u please make a video on tricks for drawing in sketchbook pro 6 PC (using a mouse) please.... its just a request
awesome! just had this problem and would have never figured out that was the issue. thanks!
Hi :) Welcome to my channel :)
I use a Wacom Cintiq.
hmmmmm... im not sure. I assume so but its best if you ask the technical support at sketchbook Pro to be sure.
OMFG, THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU. I've been using Autodesk as my go-to for what seems like years now and the lineart always came out blocky which is I've been looking for a new app. Then I see this video and it solves all of my problems. GOSH, thank you. My art will hopefully be much better from now on
That makes so much more sense now. Thanks for the tip!
did you drop the opacity of the background?
You were probably drawing on the background layer instead of the new layer.
Have you seen my video on the basics to sketchbook pro?
Its my pleasure to help :)
Hey man, great vid! one question how do you set your tablets buttons to the program???
Man you are AWESOME!!! I've been having this problem for a long time man!! Thanks.
I have just got Sketchbook to help me create sketch videos. Based on this, I think I'm going to have to get a tablet rather than trying to do this with a PC and mouse! Thanks for the training.
have you messed with your steady stroke option or pen sensitivity responsiveness at all? because I was getting the same results previously as I was after I watched the video until i messed with those settings a little bit
love your sketchbook pro tutorials!
Thank you that was very helpful. I couldn’t understand why my drawings were not as crisp and bold as I had seen in other tutorials.
Yeah i will be releasing a few Cherry Story books and Sketchbooks this year. What did you have in mind? Tutorial?
OML THANK YOU NOW ALL MY ART WILL BE LESS PIXELATED
I DIDNT KNOW HOW TO CHANGE THE RESOLUTION
OR THE SIZE yay now I can change the size!
Thank you!!!
i love ur voice! it makes watching this more interesting! i love it that u sound enthusiastic haha
Hey, i have the same problem like Timothy Guarino and im using a laptop and my tablet is Bamboo Fun Pen and Touch S, do you think its from the tablet?
thanks anyway i love youre videos
Any plans to release a book? if not, are there any books on cartooning and drawing in general you can recommend?
thanks Paris this really hleped... my art will look so much better now:)
Thanks Tiago :) I will try my best :)
Keep tios coming! Super useful! Hey how can I create a comic book style marker/pen?
I love this tutorial! THANK YOU!!! It fixed a lot of my issues!
You have to enable the rotate canvas in the settings. I have a video on Rotating the Canvas. Check it out :)
Dont feel stupid Johnny... We all had to learn about it from somewhere and im sure you will teach this to someone else who doesnt know it either :)
Thank you very much vixen :)
Nice vid, can you change the cursor in Sketchbook Pro?
Your welcome my good friend :) Always glad to help :)
Hey no problem Matthew :) Glad to help ;)
brilliant as always paris,,,,...
ahhhh i think you have the express version which is like a demo. Yeah that doesnt have all the features im afraid
I love the rain something about feel calming
That was very helpful!! There is no canvas section on my computer though. Is it because I don't use Pro?
Nice one Paris!
Thank you so much. This just pushed me towards buying :)
Just a question, if you could help; for some reason, when I open up preferences and go to canvas, all that shows is the "enable canvas scroll bars" option, but nothing else! I got my Sketchbook Pro when I bought my tablet, does that mean I don't have all the options that other people get...? Or is something just wrong??
Paris is there any particular reason you use Sketchbook pro instead of other software?
Yeah thats correct... the method counts for any artistic software :)
I don't know if this is an option in Sketchbook, but does it make a difference working in 8bit or 16 bit? Or is 8bit good enough for this type of work?
very very GOOD , from brazil ,thanks!
Thank you, from Brazil!
good video good beginner stuff I usually work on a giant canvas myself and I guess this was just part of my early instructions that actually had forgotten all about showing someone that but it's really good to know it's kind of a stretch for you I'll say relativity is a good word just make sure you always think about your relativity and my what am I looking at really is it because the computer screen can be very deceiving but he has a way of showing you inside so I don't know what your level but also to it can be applied to anywhere in your skill-set
As a production artist. Face the issue with many designers using wrong settings when creating their art files. Unless the user has a exceptional understanding of resolutions and dpi. For print, it is always best to stay with 300 dpi.
Like shown in this video you do have to start new. Once artwork is saved at 72 dpi (screen display) the damage is done and the user can not simply bump up the dpi to improve print quality.
you are so helpful. thank you for all your tutorials
hmmm... try enlarging the pencil size.
If that don't work... it must be a technical collaboration issue with your tablet and the software.
My lines are jet black, but the still seem thinner than yours. All the settings are the same, but they don't get that thickness about them at any zoom level. I don't know if it's just my computer or if these would look differently when printed or anything. It's hard to preview my work like this though. Any ideas?
i found the solution i was changing the type of the layer randomly and it worked when i set the type to multiply doesn't work if its set as any other type.... :) thanks anyway & is Wacom Bamboo one(6x9) good? i'm trying for a low budget tablet... coz im low on pocket money right now and my parents will kill me if i spend on such things.... :(
Hello may i ask what Stylus do you use in your drawings ? thanks
im always happy to help :)
Yeah its quite big and sharp too. I think the maximum you can go is 6000. Im not sure :)
I will be making a video on blending colors soon :)
ok, i did this and thank you this is a great tutorial and everything
but for some reason my bamboo splash doesn't draw it in black
it's grey, even when i max the pencil size, but it looks like yours in the video when i use my plan 'ol mouse. help? :c
Do you know where they put the dpi resolution in newer versions or is it stuck at 72 dpi?
Awesome,... great tutorial!
Will I be able to import/export to other (corelDraw, Photoshop, Illustrator) to other softwares??
are you using a laptop?
hmmmmm... interesting question. Im not sure why its not working for you. It sounds like a technical issue. So i suggest emailing the customer support at Sketchbook Pro and Wacom to really get the solution. They answer very fast
thank you pro you'r relly .... awsome i m so happy ..
I'd been struggling with that issue myself. Can't believe it's just a matter of working in low rez. Feeling kinda stupid now. Anyway, thanks for the tip! Very helpful!
Is the resolution feature available for the tablet version?
This helps! Thank you!!!
This worked for me at first, but I just started using a Cintiq. In the same program, with the same settings and equipment, my pencil still makes very faint marks unless I press REALLY hard. There are no advanced options for the default pencil - did you replace it with a different one? Could it be an issue with the pen, and not the program? Where can I go in to edit such settings? Thanks.
I think I figured out the issue. I was having the same troubles. Go to Edit stylus responsiveness and make it less responsive. Also go to edit and steady stroke and move it towards more. This makes the lines darker and less wavy.
Wait so if you want to get those smooth lines you have to increase the canvas?
