@getheidea that's where iCloud comes in. What's worse is that you also save other stuff there, like documents and photos, so you're already paying a good chunk of cash simply to have more space that's shared with everything on your devices.
The last point is the most important. No one was born a top tier artist any more than any one was born a world class chef, Olympic athlete, or math guru. All require study and practice over time. People are quick to dismiss artistic skill as innate or god-given talent when it's really just years of practice (and plenty of not-so-good-looking pieces along the way). Anyone can do it - gate's wide open :) come in and draw!
I wish I had watched this before I changed ipad😭 My smile is back. I realised that I hadn’t wiped my old ipad so changed the setting on it to icloud and I got it all back. Thank you for sharing these tips. You’ve made my day ❤ Definitely a new sub here
Do you have an iCloud or iTunes backup? Maybe you can restore it that way Edit: nvm, I just saw procreate is turned off in iCloud. Maybe still worth checking out though, especially if you have an iTunes backup
Mistake 7 was the most frustrating for me. I was following tutorials resulting in impressive copies of other artists' work. Then I'd try it on my own and realize that I didn't learn as much as I'd thought. I couldn't make the decisions on composition and color palettes. I'd love some direction on those topics.
I work freelance and up until this year, I had been tied to my desktop computer all the time to work. When faced with the decision of purchasing an iPad to have my "compact art studio" readily available to me, I was initially super intimidated. Because I just was very hesitant to drop $1k on the newest iPad models. Imagine my absolute DELIGHT when I found Apple refurbished iPads on Amazon. For $300 I got a 12.9" 2016 model iPad Pro that is basically in brand new condition. It's been absolutely perfect and I've been able to work with Procreate without any trouble. I truly recommend this option for anyone who wants to break into iPad art without breaking the bank too
I somehow managed to come across your video today. I recently treated myself to a new iPad for Christmas while I found time to find a apple pencil on sale not long ago so i can enter the world of digital art again n give it another shot with ProCreate. Really loved how well you explained these beginner mistakes to highly avoid and glad to have given it a watch through. It helped me understand fully on what not to do with making digital art now. I can't wait to practice digital art this year and get decent with it. Thanks so much Brooke.
I lost every artwork except those I exported. Can you imagine losing every .psd file because you uninstalled Photoshop? I switched to Clip Studio Paint. I use ProCreate only for scribbles.
I lost all my work from one of my iPads because my ipad prioritised icloud photos over procreate and maxed the storage on procreate i still use it but i save out almost instantly timelapse and final image i lost thousands of image hahahah
I know this is like a really old comment but I also found out the hard way, it does the same thing to CSP on iPad 😭 So the complete wipe including the folder is really an apple issue im afraid. Now I move all my files out of the CSP folder or back them up frequently, not sure if moving it out of the folder does anything cuz I dont really wanna test it out again lol.
Kai, that is so such a great compliment, you warm my heart! Thank you! I'm working on a video about the new Procreate updates so fingers crossed I can show you something new in the next one, haha!
heavy on the expensive tech, i have the basic iPad 9th gen 10.2in and i love it. The battery life isn't great but that's not a problem for me personally, but its great and still works really well. The Pencil as well is the 1st gen and works amazingly.
#7 is so true. EVERYTHING that I am good at now, I was TERRIBLE at when I started. Art, guitar, singing, photography, audio mixing etc. it’s all about dedication and practice!
I legit used an ipad pro 1st gen until the touch screen stopped working now i use an iPad mini 6th gen still waiting for that old mini. Love drawing on iPad it's awesome.
Woa, been using procreate for 3 years now and didn’t know about the color fill adjustment or the upscaling adjustment :00 Those were great tipps thank you!
With #5, I got the iPad 10th gen 64gb wifi only and my pencil is coming today. Ive tried digital before using cheap pen tabs and Im excited to do it here in my iPad (one reason ive bought this) If storage becomes an issue, I have flashdrive as backup.
When I finish a painting in procreate or adobe fresco (which is better) I export it and then delete the project file. It’s something like closure, it’s when it’s finished it’s finished. And since I make everything in the biggest scales possible at the highest resolutions possible - that would take too much space in the long run.
I made the mistake of deleting a bunch of pictures when I was trying to make a stack and was so devastated. But a few days later while deleting some old photos I found my photo trash and there were all those pictures I thought I lost. They were just jpegs but that was better than nothing😁😁😁
I don’t know much but I do know that it looks really nice if you set the survival mode on rendering to subtracting with the light pencil. I think it’s useful and cool. Works with Triangle pencil too. It is very good.
I wish I had known about the apple pencil sensitivity years ago when I bought it! (I got the cheaper usb one...). That could explain why I find it so hard to stick to drawing on my ipad when I acquired it for comfort and recreation in the first place. Your explanation about mistakes 3 and 4 was SO HELPUL!
Oh man, that's such a bummer about the Apple Pencil! It's such a bummer, cuz the advice is 'always get an Apple Pencil', but then there's one sneaky one you need to avoid at all costs. So glad the tips were helpful for you. :)
I usually do tutorials when drawing certain aspects of character design. Like right now I'm trying to learn how to improve on drawing eyes. And using my character's eyes as the mode. Next would be hair but using my character or poses, etc.
Super helpful video. Wish I had seen this years ago, especially information about threshold and resizing an image and why it becomes pixellated. Thank you. If you did a series on Procreate mistakes, I bet it would be popular.
I also want to point out that for some people the less fancy the stylus the better. I had the Apple Pencil for a bit and learned that I HATE pressure sensitivity, and that’s ok too.
This first tip is soooo golden. I wouldn't have really thought about it. I regularly backup my procreate files as psd files to the cloud - and I have a secret tip! Buy the cheaper ipad with less storage and you HAVE to do it all the time. haha. Otherwise I would never backup because I'm a lazy bum. :D
I think its important to note that mistake #1 pretty much applies to all apps 😭 My ipad was my first apple product and I didnt know deleting an app deletes the folder it created too so I lost everything when I uninstalled and reinstalled my Clip Studio App. Thankfully most were just sketches / backed up in the CSP cloud. Still quite devastating tho so back up whatever important files you have in whatever program you use on an ipad especially if its in the app's dedicated folder.
I would add another one that I’m not exactly sure is a general problem, but the app forgets all actions when you open another software, even if Procreate is left running in the background. Say, if you’re messy like me and choose to resize your canvas to export an individual, smaller drawing, and have multiple other, bigger drawings in different layers turned off, you’ll want to return to the original canvas size before leaving the app. Otherwise, you won’t be able to undo it, and all other drawings that got cut in the process? that’s already done and there’s no way to get them back. It happened to me once, I had a minor breakdown over it, but the best way to learn how to work around this app’s frustrating quirks and oversights is to be VERY mindful of them. If you’re going to apply major changes to your artwork, create a duplicate, because Procreate doesn’t store versions of your files. Just in case you won’t be able to undo drastic actions.
I don’t know about you but mine doesn’t do that. I’m pretty sure it’s a setting you have to toggle because mine always remembers all actions no matter what I do with the app as long as the canvas is open.
@@grapeyv I've been extra careful ever since but now that you mention it, it might have actually been that. I can't remember for sure, since I must have done it so quickly that I didn't even notice, but closing the canvas might have been what caused the issue
Im so glad I never deleted procreate. It has been installed for the past 2 years and i most likely never will. I’ve downloaded tons of custom brushes. It would be a pain to lose em all
I just follow a tutorial since it is therapeutic for me even if it is a copy of someone’s art the brush strokes are not identical and made my own version whenever I posted it online I still gave credits though since the original concept is not my own
i spent along time on this drawing i made once, and i was going to stack it with my other related art, and i thought i deleted it EEK! so i spend even LONGER making a new one.. and i found the original 😶 i was happy and not happy at the same time lol but amazing video!
I came here because im getting procreate soon, and dont wanna make any mistakes,,.. THANK YOU FOR THIS SUPER HELPFUL TUT!! I WILL MAKE SURE NOT TO MAKE ANY OF THESE MISTAKES, heck i might even come back here when i get procreate because, rather safe then sorry.
Older generations of the ipad aren’t compatible with the apple pencil, but there are plenty of pretty good alternatives! Plenty of UA-cam reviews out there on apple pencil alternatives. I manage to do just fine with my stylus.
Oh my gosh! I loved this video. I'm definitely going to look at your website for more drawing tips. Im not a beginner artist but lately ive been feeling unhappy with my art, and i want to learn digital art too. Thank you for making this video, im glad it found me :) ❤
I did both 1 and 2. 2 when I was making stacks and for some reason it deleted over 30 drawings instead of putting it into a stack and 1 by accident, instead of temporarily making room without actually removing (the option that’s build in) I removed it. Luckily both times I was able to get it back by resetting my iPad to the latest back up (I was smart enough to have procreate in the automatic iCloud backup, thanks past self) 😅
Can you show some effects that can use in procreate like by dragging the pen hidden pictures coming out as color. Though the art was created before. I saw some reels like that. That's why I'm asking you to show the tricks.
Of course I see this 2 days after I finally get procreate along with adopting my mom's iPad only to realize the stylus I have doesn't have pressure sensitivity ]:( What do I do if I cannot get my hands on a stylus with pressure sensitivity at the moment?
5:22 my iPad is just one type from being able to use an apple pen :/ it’s an iPad mini 4 and the oldest one that can use an apple pen is iPad mini 5 :( but I bought a different type of pen that I’m gonna use until this iPad can’t handle anything anymore then I’ll buy anew iPad bc this one works just fine enough that I don’t want to spend money on a new one
There are two kinds of people: those who don't do backups and those who didn't do backups. Backup everything, not just procreate. Ideally in file formats that can be read by other apps too. And now and then make sure those backups actually contain everything important. Storage space is dirt cheap nowadays and definitely cheaper than losing something important.
These are great! Do you know why this happens… When I try to copy a layer into a same size/resolution document, it pasts a tiny pixelated version. It won’t copy the original layer as it was in the original file. It hasn’t always been this way so it is very frustrating. Thanks!
Totally true. You really don't need fancy gadgets to make digital art. When I first got started, I just made little doodles in MS Paint. As a child. As an adult, I still like to use MS Paint. Sometimes. It's a simple painting tool. But man, Clip Studio Paint is soooo much more powerful. I can draw curves in MS Paint easily, but it's even easier to draw curves in Clip Studio Paint. I only have Clip Studio Paint on desktop/laptop, connected to a mouse, as it is the perpetual license one-time fee that has attracted me to buy it. On iPad and iPhone, I use Autodesk Sketchbook (free app), and I have to admit, it's totally cool. I actually don't have an Apple Pencil, no, but I do have my fingers, and I just finger-paint. I do a lot of finger-painting. Believe it or not, the Apple Notes app is also what I use to make simple doodles, and I do that with finger-painting. My fingers are, of course, very imprecise, but the best I can do is a basic sketch.
Omg, you took me for a total throw back with MS Paint! Haven't thought of that in YEARS. But yes, exactly! You can make amazing art with all kinds of tools.
I broke my original Apple Pencil and could not afford a new one, but feel that I can still create my art without pen pressure, as it's simply a different strategy. My cheap one does have tilt, though.
I think the bigger point is, learn how to draw, not how to use Procreate. I use only 3 of the built in brush for all my Procreate art and often times completely ignored quite a few features of the app, but the point is, it's more important to know how to draw first, then try finding the tools needed to draw it out, than to learn all the tools first and still have no idea when to use them. By all means focus on what you are drawing, not what tool you are using, and doing things the dumb way never hurts as long as you know what you are drawing.
Actually, getting an ipad and procreate 100% made me a better artist, and I say that after only a couple of days of using it. All the art I've ever done in procreate is so so so much better than anything I did before. It's just... Not exactly procreate that caused that and more the fact that I now can draw directly on the screen whereas before I had a super old wacom tablet 😂
As an Gen x, i manually backup everything. The cloud can be unreliable and auto save is BS. Never trust auto. Export, save to files or email them to your computer. Back. up. Everything!!
As a person who can’t always tell her own strength I can tell you right now no way would I spend the money on a Apple Pencil like that I do better with a drawing tablet and the ability to resize my brush I just don’t trust myself to use that type of technology well I can work well with pencil paper but that’s because I’m used to it and trust myself if I accidentally break or bleed through paper it’s fine if that happens with an expensive tablet it’s less so… however I will remember everything else because I currently work with ibas but I’m never against learning to work with new tools if I think it’s a good idea for myself. (I just the sensitivity just doesn’t sit right with me-)
Hi. I have a question I hope you can answer because your videos I can follow and learn from the easiest. I have plenty of memory, and I have been using procreate for about a year to a year and a half now. When in procreate it lags severely and then it locks up and crashes out. Do you happen to have a suggestion for correcting this? I am left handed and heavy handed but I don’t think that has anything to do with it. Any help or video you have is much appreciated. Thank you for the best videos out there in my opinion.
I have a friend who has a glitch in procreate TwT its where every line turns straight (she doesnt hold it after drawing) this also happens with different brushes and she once was like "maybe i need to delete and reinstall procreate!" and i was like "NO- /her name/ DONT DO THAT LMAO" but we still havent figured out why this has happened does anyone know the reason 😭
I noticed at mistake number 3, you are using the case with detachable keyboard that I also have 😭 is there any way to fix the side of the speaker? I noticed like mine it’s a little bit loose, I think my parents were tricked into buying it.. now they’re saying im reckless with my stuff even tho it happens to everyone who has it. Had to buy a cheaper apple keyboard case alternative. Anyways thanks for the tips
Just tell them they’re wrong and provide proof. It’ll be up to them whether or not they wanna stay ignorant and blame you or finally listen to you afterwards.
Hi! My procreate app crashes when I try to open the color palette. NOTHING is working and I’ve started moving my 4 years of work off of it so I can delete the app but I’m hoping you have a solution for this so I won’t have to delete.

You fixed my color fill problem!!!!
Great
Can you show some effects that can use in procreate like by dragging the pen hidden pictures coming out as color. Though the art was created before. I saw some reels like that. That's why I'm asking you to show the tricks.
Thanks so much for these tips Brooke. For those of us who have Procreate but aren't tech savvy how do you get Procreate updates?
awwwwwwww thanksssssss
Even if I back up my art, I will never delete my art apps. I think everyone should know the things you mentioned.
Anyone can learn how to draw, it’s whether they want to take the time to learn and practice
Im using ipad 9th gen on procrete and i can make like what clipstudio can. ❤
Let’s have a silence moment for the people who did mistake #1
I learned to never delete ur art app from deleting ibis paint once (without backing up ofc) 😭
Of course I see this 2 days after I finally get procreate along with adopting my mom's iPad only to realize the stylus I have doesn't have pressure sensitivity ]:(
What do I do if I cannot get my hands on a stylus with pressure sensitivity at the moment?
I dont have procreate because of the tablst I'm using. So I just watch other procreate users do some of the best art I have ever seen.
I did the first mistake and deleted a drawing my dead friend did. That hurt because that was the only thing left
When it comes to layers, it has to do with the amount of RAM and not necessarily the model of the iPad, correct?
I think the bigger point is, learn how to draw, not how to use Procreate. I use only 3 of the built in brush for all my Procreate art and often times completely ignored quite a few features of the app, but the point is, it's more important to know how to draw first, then try finding the tools needed to draw it out, than to learn all the tools first and still have no idea when to use them.
By all means focus on what you are drawing, not what tool you are using, and doing things the dumb way never hurts as long as you know what you are drawing.
Well said!
I just got an m2 air ipad 😅
well ty, i wouldn’t do that anyway but your voice it’s amazing! i love it! it’s perfect without irritating me, clean loud but small idk! 🤷♀️ lol
As an Gen x, i manually backup everything. The cloud can be unreliable and auto save is BS. Never trust auto. Export, save to files or email them to your computer. Back. up. Everything!!
This just happened to me for second time. I’m devastated and will no longer be using procreate. I’m over it.
What happens if my undo button doesn’t work and I just have to manually click the button?
Number #4
I got the problem that it is blurry as soon as i move something, or copy paste, it always ends up sh1tty
(I just the sensitivity just doesn’t sit right with me-)
I knew i would lose my art progress and my brush but i end up saving my brush and deleting it but i have to buy it back
Bad
Idea
Update it
Why do I find out about mistake 1 after I did it 😭 I lost everything I built up… still confused why they don’t make accounts for procreate
I got a Clip studio paint ad before this video start 💀💀💀
When we uninstall the app, do we have to pay for it again ?
I have Apple Pencil usb c and it has pressure sensitivity…
Hi! My procreate app crashes when I try to open the color palette. NOTHING is working and I’ve started moving my 4 years of work off of it so I can delete the app but I’m hoping you have a solution for this so I won’t have to delete.
Did you try updating it
@@grapeyv it wont update the iOS for some reason and I have 36gb on there. Procreate is updated. I’m thinking it’s a corrupt palette or something
MR BEANNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just accidently deleted a whole stack of dragon drawings i have made, is there any way. can get them back?!?!?!
i deleted procreate once and i didnt know it costed money (i was a sketchbook (the app) artist back then lol)
