This is the best sketchbook pro tutorial that I've ever seen. I've been using this tool for years and never knew I could group layers in that way. So useful thank you so much!
You have to draw something first... Put something down, anything, then lock the layer. After that, draw over the thing you just put down with a different color or whatever, you know, like the video just showed you. You can't lock a layer _then_ draw on the blank space, because that's not how that works. You also can't erase anything on a locked layer. My recommendation would be to watch the video first before saying that something doesn't work.
@@lethauntic hey ! Even with a layer that has a lot painting (in my case I’m painting skin and I wanted to try this to shade it) it actually says “you can’t draw on locked layers” [unlock layer] or [cancel], would you by chance know why ? (I’ve watched the whole vid and did the same steps but it still does that)
I'm still confused; what is the multiply layer actually doing? If you have a selection your airbrush will only color inside the selection. As far as i can tell this can be done without a multiply layer??
Extremely helpful. Other artists in digital art don't get where we newbies might face difficulty. Thank you i have been looking for just only this much piece of info. Everywhere. 💜💜
Trent, I bought Clip Studio Ex... Needless to say it has a heck of a learning curve. I love your art and lesson's and was wondering could you possibly give some tips for Clip Studio... Ease my pain Trent lol
I am new to sketchbook. I am an artist however in traditional mediums. I have found your videos incredibly informative. I have a question though. I cannot find a video on how to add separate (previously completed) drawings into a new drawing i'm working on. Is that possible? And, would you happen to have a video on that.
Thank you very very much sir I have I have this route for many days I checked many videos but no 1 explained as clear as you thank you very very much sir
This is awesome!! Layering and masking has been hard for me to learn but its ooooooh so useful! You explain things in a straight forward way thats easy to understand. Funny thing, im learning digital through Krita, but the commands are very similar. That multiply layer... critical piece of the puzzle. 👌💕👏💋 Keep up the awesome work Trent!! Thank you.
I guess that works as masking but thats really like the pixel lock in Photoshop. I wish there were actual masking like Photoshop has. Sketchbook is really great! I love the interface but it is just missing a few key features that I wish it had.
Hey, im trying to draw over photographs and pull the drawing off of the photo as its own thing (If you are wondering its literally a bunch of different facial expression pictures of myself and my husband so i can learn facial shapes) how can i go about doing that?
Hi Trent been a fan and I have a question as well a small favour... I struggle with the magic wand ... as in the sections I want to highlight never gets selected and it frustrates me.. if possible could you do a in depth tutorial of how to Properly use the magic wand. 😅😅. Thank you and stay safe with this pandemic going on
Magic Wand the Outside of the Object and Then just invert selction with shift+ctrl+I , if this is not what you had the problem with sorry for wasting your time, i willl try to understand better next time
Thanks a bunch Trent, and my name was pronounced just fine. Waiting for my cintiq pro to come back from Wacom and then I guess I have to go and buy stuff from your Gumroad page to show some support ;)
something i dont understand is that everything mentioned seems possible in a normal layer, so i still dont understand what changes when you turn it into a multiply layer for example 1:06 is possible in normal layers as well, so what changed
Can you paste a character over a background, say if you draw a brick wall and want to paste a guy over it? I just bought a Picasso tablet and I am a super-beginner. I can't seem to find an answer to this, all I see is the option to merge them all together. The goal is to make a comic strip and would be so much easier to draw a few backgrounds that I could reuse over and over. Any help would be appreciated!
Multiply is a layer mode that makes it so the liter things on it get more transparent the liter they are. For example, if you have a black lineart that isn't on a seperate layer, that would pose a problem. But if you set it to multiply, it lets colors pass through on the whites, but not on the blacks. It is gradual too, meaning if you have some gray halftones, it will work exactly as you think it would.
The latest free version of Autodesk Sketchook (in 2020) doesn't have the option to GROUP LAYERS and it's driving me CRAZY! can't seem to find the older version for download. UGH!!
@@PortgasDAce-wt2qu YES! I cant understand why would that be removed! Now i need to merge layers to move them together. Very unfriendly. Planning on shifting to some other software if i dont find an answer to this.
Great question... I'm sorry that I don't yet have the answer. They might have the default set as one of the brush sets that you can download. Otherwise, you could re-install? It might only take a few minutes to just delete the software and reinstall
Man it's really weird that Sketchbook doesn't have an alpha lock option for the entire folder so that you can paint within each layer at the same time. You'd almost assume it'd be one of the first features they would have thought about but even 3 years later it doesn't appear to be. I guess the way around it would be to basically merge all your pieces after the flats are completed. But then you loose the ability to only paint on specific pieces; so I guess you'd leave that to the end and do shadows and lighting that way (but then again this would only work as one layer so if you plan on painting multiple layers you'll still have to go one piece at a time). Ah well.
Kinda wish you went more in depth with the application of a multiply layer. Unless a multiply layer's only function is to literally just let you color it in.
Well that's a pretty old feature. Although I see a lot of people who still didn't figure it out yet. Unfortunatly, this is a work-around, not a full fledged masking feature. Mayby someday Autodesk will get there... Maybe someday... As for grouping, it pretty standard.
Still not as good as Photoshop. For instance, in Photoshop you can have a group mask, and any layer beneath that group will only work within that mask. That way you can have color and shading on separate layers, which you can't in Sketchbook. In Sketchbook you would need to have the color and shading on the same layer as shown using the technique in this video.

I just started using sketchbook and this is the first time someone's actually TAUGHT this! thank you!
The grouping layers thing is EXACTLY what I’ve been needing!! I hate only being able to zoom in on one layer at a time! It was so frustrating!
It's 2019 and still no clipping mask function. Gosh.
You can now
Wait really?
@@howai4204 Sorry, clipping not exactly, but you can do something similar and it's in the layer options

I like these older vids. Very technical and prise. Learning alot. How did you get into Photoshop?
I got into photoshop because it was the only art program of significance in 1999 and an industry standard.

If you scan an image, it has white. You have to set the layer to multiply to make that white transparent.

Just use transparency, and paint under your line art, and in front of the background. 3 layers would do the trick.
