That’s why my local KIA tech connects a battery charger directly to the 12v when any lengthy work is performed on these cars (software update, etc). This procedure is often listed in the notes section of the invoice.

Good info Brian. I leave my tailgate open for long periods when working outside and I noticed that, after a while, it turns off the boot light to save power drain. When I have to buy my own batteries I always get Motorhoome versions which are semi-leisure and don't die if they get a deep discharge. It's not as if an EV needs a high cranking voltage, so a full leisure battery would probably be OK.

Thanks Brian - very interesting as always. Regards disconnecting Kia Connect when the car's in the dealership, I used the Kia Connect "The boot is open" message to call the garage and tell them to close the boot, or the battery will go flat. The message came back from Kia Connect that everything was OK. My solution therefore is to tell the garage on arrival to disconnect the 12v if things are to be left open - and point out that I'm checking on them while it's being worked on. It seems to focus minds - so far! 19th July for next software update visit

Confirms my worries. The KIA Connect App was what killed our original battery. Since it was replaced I have managed without the App. I would suggest putting it in offline mode, and deleting the app!

That seems like an extreme solution … I like having the app. Got a new battery in the Soul, before Christmas. Everything’s been OK since - though I do keep an eye on the Battery Monitor occasionally. My impression is that the 12V battery drained at a higher level when the car was plugged in and waiting for a scheduled charge. It’s seems to be really back to the BMS - charging on interval rather than on voltage/SOC.
And yes, I appreciate the EV6 is going to be a bit different to the Soul/Niro - though there appears to be quite a bit of commonality in the logic being used for both systems.

One factor that can be overlooked is that the car's internal 'recovery' mode that energises the DC to DC converter to top-up the 12v battery is disabled if the traction battery SOC is at 20% or below. So that parking up with a low state of charge in the traction battery and then leaving doors etc open as well as the usual drains for telemetry can result in the 12v battery being drained without being topped up as expected.

    • @evodessey

Yes i’ve covered that before in other videos and it also crops up earlier in the comments on this video but my car has never been below 25%SOC on the traction battery. Always well worth reminding people who are unaware of it though cheers.

@RuiSjm my car is 22 months old. It's still on the original 12v battery. I rarely use the Kia Connect app, other than in winter for remote heating, otherwise I don't have any use for it. I schedule my charging via my home charger app and I do reasonable mileage (37,000km complete). I don't have reason to be opening the car or the boot when I'm not going anywhere, I know that this impacts 12v life also.
What I am more concerned about however is reading recently that the ICCU software update (which I don't have yet anyway) only improved diagnostics in order to alert the car/driver sooner and does not prevent the fault happening so I'm awaiting the inevitable when my ICCU packs up. Something not to look forward to 🙄
Thankfully I've had zero reliability problems in the 22 months of ownership though so I've no complaints.

Thank you Brian for the research into the 12volt battery issue. Interesting as my brother purchased a new Toyota 'Hybrid' Yaris in December 2020, when we went into another "Wuhan/Covid" lockdown virus phase. His car was left on his driveway for a couple of weeks without being driven. Yes, you guessed it. He had the same issues. His car would not function as the 12volt battery was being run down with all the ancillaries (computer, alarm, keyless entry etc) draining power?
In my view this is because the incorrect 12v amp hour battery is being used, and would not be picked up during a short testing phase of the car (KIA Testing Technicians).
A better solution would be to have the same sized battery, with more capacity "Amp hours" which could keep the quiescent volts/milliamps feeding the ancillaries for a longer duration. i.e. so you can leave a car for 4 weeks at an airport, without needing a "Portable Car Jump Start" device for hybrids and electric cars.
Test 1: For the EV6 (assuming all the electronics are working correctly) we need to know the to power being used from the 12volt battery - whilst parked up with just the standard items being powered up.
Test 2: Try and record the extra power requirements as used for the tailgate, and anything else that draws power, when the vehicle is stationary.
Note: The EV6 'Air' 12V battery is 60Ah (20HR) : Your battery now is 62Ah - as you say not much difference!
[This is assuming there is not a bad batch of batteries being used.]

Mine died a few times in a single month. KIA's told me that it was caused by my Pod point home charger. Apparently, it was constantly "informing" my Pod point app how much charge it drew. And since it's constantly on, it was draining the 12 volt. 😅

the main reason why you notice the battery voltage start to rise again is the car systems went to sleep ( all cars do this not just EV's) eg the usb port turned off in doing so the current draw from the battery was reduce and in turn the voltage increased and when you closed the boot it had to power up systems then the voltage increased again afterwards . on my Niro the 12v will always be charged when the 12v is at 12.5v but only when the car is locked but why won't the 12v be charge when the car is unlocked, doors open etc may be its a safety issue having to have the HV powered up to maintain the 12v. i wouldn't be surprised once you locked the car after that test the 12v was charged up. i have also changed all my internal lights to LED's this has reduced the wattage a lot. this week the car hasn't been used so the 12v charged as follows day 1 no charge, day 2 charged @1am for 50mins, day 3 charged twice 3am for 30mins, 6am for 15mins, day 4 1pm 1 hour. no other activities seen on the 12v.

This is definitely manufacturer’s faulty design. KIA has to recall EV6s and fix the draining issue with 12V batteries. So far they are shrinking from accepting responsibility. Let’s wait for another 1-2 years until the majority bulk of EV6 owners would hit the problem and it would hopefully send KIA into a meltdown.

A fully charged 12v battery is at approx 12.65v. 12.3v in the video is just over 50%DoD and about as low as one really wants a SLA to go. The BM display showing 90% is very misleading. The battery will only be charged if the voltage from the DC-DC converter is above 12.65v. At around 12.5v it is only slowing down the rate of discharge. The charge voltage should be above a 13.6v float voltage.
I would also connect an ammeter between the battery negative terminal post and the negative lead. Shut down, leave and lock car and monitor the ammeter as well as BM. It would be interesting to read what the quiescent state current is??

  • @paulsomerville3816
    @paulsomerville3816 Рік тому +2

Your drain is no different to a standard ICE car when its being worked on, true to say that ICE cars do have higher capacity battery's. SOC and Volts are two different measures there will be a surface charge on a battery following any charge period this dissipates rapidly after charger is disconnected then the battery will stabilize at its true SOC or Voltage, that's why they are tested after a full charge and a 1 hour wait. the issue with your car was that the battery sulphated this is due to the battery being constantly held at a nominated voltage and not stressed, ICE battery's are subjected to almost a dead short when the car is asked to start EV's are not and as such the plates are not forced to shed the sulphation, this then builds to a point where the battery's ability to transfer between pos and neg plates is reduced causing battery failure.

    • @evodessey
      @evodessey  Рік тому

Whilst that may be true, the telematics is not helping the situation. Also the car constantly maintaining the 12v at >98% SOC with >14 volts constantly whilst driving may also not be helping (this is Jon Godfrey’s theory)

At the start of the video your SOC was 94%. At the end, it was 87%. being very conservative that means whilst doing your testing you lost 5% of your battery. That means that you used approx 3.5Kw per hr. I know that you truncated the video in places, but if you continued to do stuff for 20 times as long as you actually did, you would have entirely flattened the main traction battery without moving an inch. That to me seems an incredibly heavy power draw to to action some ancillary functions, especially when I consider that in an emergency situation I've estimated I could power all key aspects of my house for around a week from the EV6.

    • @evodessey

I don’t think the BM2 monitor is actually that accurate. It’s just a best guess based on the 12v voltage mapped to a guestimate of the remaining 12v %SOC. So i don’t think it would use that much. As others have pointed out in the comments the 12v recovers to it’s actual real %SOC after the load has been removed so it wasn’t the VCMS doing it in this case.(this would show as 14v charging voltage)

If I open the door while the windows are down and close it, the windows will not go up, also all the displays will be off as well after 5 minutes. Other app only checks battery status when I connect to the charger.
The problem here is 2 things:
    1. Kia has a long history with bad 12V batteries
    2. Charging of 12V battery has problems. Hardware or software. And why not start charging when battery is seen low ? Car knows 12V voltage.

Thanks for posting and documenting this issue. What I'm taking away so far is that there are many potential drains on the 12v battery, including through the USB port and the KIA connect app - - BUT perhaps these are only relevant with a battery that is already compromised? So far, it looks like your new 12v battery is handling the normal 12v drains very well? And you noted that the dealership replaced your old battery with a beefier, larger capacity, battery? Would you share the specs on that new battery (vs the specs of the old battery)? It would be nice if that were the case and the fix is to simply replace the 12v battery if needed. Since I don't know the status (health) of my 12 v battery, I'm watching 12v drains very carefully. (USA, 2022 AWD Wind model, early production.) To deal with the potential drain of the wireless Motorola MA1 Android Auto adapter, I bought this USB on-off switch on Amazon. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08M44D79T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I would say the battery is more able to handle it yes but the major risk is when it goes into the workshop for service & recalls and leave doors, bonnet & tailgate open for hours. That in turn drains 12v by keeping binnacle display on and also send out tons of Kia Connect messages about car being unlocked, doors being open and such so i will be taking Kia Connect offline at next service. @@evodessey Thanks for your reply. My car is going into service today for the battery conditioning software and amplifier replacement today. I will turn off the Kia Connect messages and alert the service staff to be mindful of 12v battery drain. And thanks for posting the battery comparison. In addition to simply having a new battery, looks like you went from 60 Ah to 62 Ah. Since I know next to nothing about 12v batteries, I don't know how significant an increase this is. Good luck and THANK YOU for your videos!

The service department says they always connect the 12v battery to a battery tender when updating software. So that's good. Also, apparently, the KIA connect software is different in the US variant. I could not find a way to put KIA connect in offline mode. The menus are different.

@@eurosteve50 Yeah i’ve found out that some dealers have been plugging in 12v charger to keep things alive. A good practise.
