What causes Weight Gain? (How to Lose Weight) | Jason Fung

- What causes weight gain? Most people think it's all calories in calories out, but that's simplistic first order thinking. You must go deeper to the root causes of weight gain if you want to understand how to lose weight. Obesity spreads like a virus, an example of social contagion. By understanding the key role that societal norms and especially your friends play in weight gain, you can leverage this to your own advantage to lose that weight. Check out my blog at / drjasonfung

Does the body really slows down its metabolism when we start eating less even though we are overweight?
I am 190 I always been 145 my whole life at one point lower than that I've gained over 50 lbs in the last 4 years and now that I am engaged I am wanting more to be healthy again. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx5VQ5nUzHu6i0O5_u7ipyLnCz0lbsSvr0 I am not fat but I am thick and have muscle. I am very close to how you were but a lil smaller but I am so sick people making comments to me like I'm huge or like you said having shorts that used to be so cute on me and now I can't even find a pair to fit me. I used to love shopping now I don't even want to go to the store and if I do I pick the biggest size don't even try it on and deal with it. I went from size 5 to size idk because I don't even want to know the real number. I hate looking at pics of myself now or me before. thank you for your video it's time to make a change.
*Changed my life. I will never eat the same ever again. "Unless you physically trip and your face lands in a box **weightlose.fitness** of donuts, there is no such thing as a 'slip'." Get that mind set and you'll win again and again.*
I started my 20:4 fasting schedule on April 12th. The day my vascular doctor said he could fix my legs but I'm fat and not changing my lifestyle. So It would just happen again, so it would be pointless. I weighted 345lbs on April 12th. This morning on June 3rd, I weigh 314. I'm glad I found these videos.
I just started 20/4 how are you doing?
@@theresa1973 ,funny you should ask..... today I started again. Food is my weakness. I was doing great and I used some life moments as a excuse. I was doing great and am getting back to it. Good luck to you. I use a free fasting app that was helping. It's called fast tracker. I think the emblem is a red fork. It was good help. Let me know how it goes for you. Support is a big deal. Happy fasting!!😀
Four years ago my endocrinologist recommended that I get a copy of the “Obesity Code “. I’m 80 years old and I can honestly say that it has changed my life. Between your book and adopting a keto lifestyle I’ve become a different person. I’ve lost 80 lbs and kept it off for that four years. I give her credit for pointing me in the right direction, but your guidance, IF and Keto for the rest. I’ve been overweight my entire adult life and it never occurred to me that I would ever fit in size 40 slacks again let alone 34’s. My quality of life has been bettered 10 fold. God bless and keep you Dr.Fung.
Larry you are amazing! An inspiration for sure!!
FANTASTIC! It is never too late.
That's great Larry. I mean no negativity at all, but I'm always intrigued why people who have lost loads of weight and successfully kept it off for years still watch 'how to lose weight' videos?
@@Jackpot12 I think you've asked a great question. I have lost a fair amount of weight and have kept it off for years and when I thought about your question I concluded that the reason I still watch content like this video is because I'm always learning. This video is a great example - it's the first time I've heard that having a close friend gain weight increases your risk of gaining weight. It makes sense on several levels but I never knew that it was studied to the extent that it has been.
@@scotthogle425 Appreciate the reply Scott...and yes, I guess the obvious answer is its still beneficial to learn more! Thanks for the insight
Most of the people in my family were thin when younger
But now they are gaining
I was much bigger
But now i cut 60 lbs and am getting stronger
Whats that supossed to mean? That they got lazy with age but you got hard working with age? Or that they had better genetics or were lucky but you outdid them anyway?
Thanks for more in-depth yet practical wisdom Dr. Fung. I have been sharing your nuggets with my father, who mind you is a strong headed Pakistani 💪🏼 And he has lost weight while slowly getting off some of his meds. Thank YOU! With love and friendship, Arsalan
That is so great!
That is amazing. Good for him 🎉🎊🎉
I am so happy for you AND for your father! 😋
As peri menopausal woman, I had difficulty loosing weight. I tried everything that had worked when I was younger: counting calories, going vegan, exercising, etc. Then a friend told me about Obesity Code, and it revolutionized my life. Yes, I lost weight, but more importantly, I was no longer a slave to my appetite. I chose when and what to eat, and then just forgot about food for the rest of the day. Did I feel hunger pangs? Yes, but I just drank some water, kept busy, and before I knew it, they were gone. The key is to stay away from sugar, processed foods and processed carbohydrates.
The key is to have self-control. End of story
Exactly the same for me. Once I cut out all the processed food and fast carbs it was so easy!!! Keeping it under 50g per day, clean too. LOVING IT!
@@thegreatestmantoevrwlkthep9986 Highly processed foods are designed by highly intelligent/paid scientist to make the food addictive, irresistible and easy to over eat just to sell more for profit. Highly processed food increase the brains addictive tendency, reduces satiety hormones and increases the hunger hormones making self control impossible. Best to avoid ultra processed poisons.
@@thegreatestmantoevrwlkthep9986 Food addiction is very strong. That's why nearly 90% of Americans are insulin resistant. The advice given over decades to eat in moderation and count calories has clearly not worked. Forty years ago when processed foods weren't everywhere most people where slim. Best advice is to have the self control not to eat poisonous processed foods at all.
@@thegreatestmantoevrwlkthep9986 Technically abstinence is the answer, but it's not as simple as saying to an addict just stop. You can't blame someone because their environment and culture made them addicts. To truly solve a problem you need to understand the root cause, which is why we are lucky to have Jason Fung and Robert Cywes (the carb addiction Doctor). P.S I like your tag, my name Azim means the great one!
I stay away from friend's whom I use to binge eat. Every meal with them would not be with sugar and fried food. 2 months back I started IF n see the change in me. Both mentally n physically. Beginning to truly love myself🙂. Immemse gratitude Dr Fung.
Mom walked in and all she heard was, "dealing with alcohol" for 2 minutes and asked if I wanted to talk, lol
Lol!
Make sure you shock Her by winning against alcohol dear
Yes! Friends CAN make you fat - or slim! I went on holiday with two friends. I was overweight, while my friends were slim and watched what they ate, one of them was in fact a recovering anorectic. I felt embarrassed to fill my plate with high calorie food when my friends ate vegetables and fish, with a cube of melon for dessert, so for two weeks decided to wait for them to get their food from the buffet first. Then, I copied what they ate. Lo and behold, I lost weight! I heard overweight people complaining about slim co-workers going to lunch without them, or overweight friends of formerly overweight people complaining about being cut off from the lives of their now-slim friends. And while I get their pain, from personal experience I can say that - sad but true, being fat is catching! The good news is - so is being slim!
I love that you acknowledged that ♥. Many people like you said would just complain.
Dr Fang, you are a genius. I have been overweight all my life. I have been hearing IF for ever, but randomly started it a month back. I had my doubts, u just nailed all of them. Being a mother of 2 yr old active toddler and household work, don't really have time for workout. But IF is just miraculous..i lost 4kg in almost a month. The best part is i can eat what I cook and no separate meal. It has become lifestyle now..I wrap my last bite at 5pm and first byte at 9am.
I'm from the UK where the obesity epidemic is escalating. I was a bit overweight as were all my friends, but a few years ago I took control and lost 56 pounds, I also lost my friends slowly one by one. I'm still slim, they are still overweight.
You lost your friends, because you chose to losse weight? 😢
That’s sad. You have control if your life and it shows. Perhaps they don’t like the reminder standing in front of them? I learned not to discuss my successes at all, most don’t want to hear it and even well meaning people will try subtle sabotage.
@@suebell5870 Funnily enough it was them who always mentioned my weight loss not me. Even my Daughter -in-law stopped speaking to me because I became slimmer than her.
Same here - lost 95 pounds on Keto and IF. People who used to chat with me at work don’t now - or I’ll get a backhanded compliment like “I can’t see you anymore!”
I don't think people like to be reminded of their failure and unfortunately, your great success probably represents that to them. Hopefully you'll gather new friends to you who aren't threatened by the fact you have your life in order. I'm also in the UK and I find it heartening that lots of mainstream media classes obesity as a major cause of T2 diabetes in most cases making it more of a lifestyle issue than an unavoidable disease that can only be treated with drugs. Hopefully we can turn it around in time with enough health education instead of just prescribing drugs.
Very exciting in that we can be the friend who is setting a better example. My first year or so of intermittent fasting I was shy & embarrassed when people laughed but now in my 3rd year I've actually influenced some people directed them to you Dr Fung and your videos and books so it's very joyful. I don't ever want to lose another loved one to obesity relayed complications!!
Me too!
Yes, it will be so nice to help others beat this epidemic when they see us winning!!! (Not covid... obesity).
Did you do keto? Or just low calory and IF.
Congratulations too

She got friends who were into working out and eating healthily. For me it was a fit and healthy friend who helped me lose weight when we were in school.

must be a girl thing cause I see it too often that they literally all end up later in life (marriage) with zero friends where as guys still have friends to get together to say play organized sports and stay active even in 30's, 40's. hes right tht you have to find fit friends. i made friends that were fit and now to socialize we can go on walks or jogs, not everything has to be eating out
Dr. Fung, I lost 60 lbs. and gained many health benefits. After several years of IF and one meal a day I have put 10 pounds back on. Analyzing myself, I think there is a fatigue factor that comes into play. It's harder for me to stick to the strict rules everyday, that allowed for my original weight loss. I get tired of fasting and tired of rejecting the poor choices of food at family and neighborhood gatherings. I haven't abandoned the rules, but I've relaxedly them slightly for one or two days each week. The other five or six days each week I am in weight loss mode but weight gained one day takes five days to get it off.
Thank you Dr. Fung! I recently found your videos and they are great and helping me so much. Fortunately I have great friends and most of them are fit and active. We are in our 40’s and still play soccer ...just not as well as we used to LOL. However, alcohol seems to be our outlet when we are together...which isn’t great for our wellness goals. I do, funny enough, have one friend who gets upset if I don’t eat all of my meal when we go out to eat together. Not great!
I recently found my love for IF and low carb meals. Loving it! Looking at food in such a different way thanks to individuals such as Dr. Fung, Autumn Bates, Dr. Becky and Thomas Delauer. . **Just wish I could stop the social drinking. That’s the hardest part.
Until people stop using food as a social integration, obesity will still grow up, people need to open their eyes and understand this socializing doesn’t have to go with eating!
It would also help a lot if TVs had a device the blocked all food comercials.
@@armadillotoe i mean thats propaganda for food companies theres nothing you can do about it, unless you decide to ignore them, in other words “will power” they are not forcing you to eat it, they just promoting themselves

Yes! I appreciate your approach that makes it so easy to understand... I get SO tired of hearing we must stay in a calorie deficit ...😩.. did that for over 40 years .. I stayed morbidly obese! The decades of yo yo dieting ended after your teachings and many others .. I now weigh less now at 56 then I did at 11... and my health markers are perfect ! THANK YOU !
Too good Dr Fung ! Living in Germany I appreciate greatly. At work we are steadily confronted with sugary juices, cakes (birthday, Christmas Team's fest and with snacks on seminars and Meetings...
What do i do: "i behave like an asocial" and i say as excuse that "i may not, i am ill"
(Healthy in fact. Weight also optimal)
My best friend? is: my body!!
Since, I have noticed that I am not alone: two managers keep their fitness and they are just the ones (immorality?) that offer cakes and juices to others (fattening over the years), for their birthday, without eating any!
On their desks only water or a coffee. Only eating at lunch times.
There must be a corporate care for eliminating these snacks behaviors at work.
I'm really digesting this information and going over it again (kind of hit me sideways thinking about my friends)...but, have to say, Dr Fung loves to relax by fishing, eh! Awesome! Keep it Reel and let me know when you're in the Northwoods for some good down time fishing and kayaking!
PS...I do OMAD easily, need to step up to a longer fast to kick in the weight loss as my body says, ok, this is the norm and it makes no difference. Keep it simple with good proteins and leafy greens, mushrooms, avocadoes...yet it makes no difference. My cardiologist recommended you, starting with the Obesity Code. I think this is my journey til I die. Hopefully, it'll be in many many years. Thank you.
Dr. Fung - keeping it reel!
Dr. Fung you are doing such great work!
You're the average of the 5 friends that you hang out with, so it makes total sense that you would get fat from hanging out with fat friends. Cuz we can't help but be influenced by others that we associate with. I hang out with lean friends, and there you go. I'm not super shredded due to genetical limitations and eating habits, but hey, I ain't that fat either.
I read his book on Diabetes and got my blood sugar down from 9.0 to 7.0 hopefully to 5.5 over the next few months Thank you Dr. Fung❤️
Very interesting and valuable information. Thanks Dr Fung.
Best explanation so-far!!!
before the pandemy I used to work at an office with a team who constantly ordered deserts and fatty food. they had a big lunch and then a high calory afternoon snack. and the funny thing is my prior team didn't have any rituals of eating anything together outside of lunch. and even that they didn't go crazy with. I was shocked to go through the change. we were constantly eating terrible things but thank God then came the remote life...

It is refreshing that you say obesity is contageous. It is true in my observation. Also people are consuming WAY WAY too much sugary foods that jack up insulin and serotonin, which are known to cause mass & weight gains. Sugar works better than Prozac and it's less expensive. Insulin is used by russian body builders to get massive weight gain and massive strength to lift 1000lbs. But in the long run it destroys thier liver and they can't lose weight. Obese people like having obese friends/associates, its about having common interests without being humilited. I saw a skinny guy marry into an obese family, in time he eventually became obese also. This is why slim people have slim friends because of the humilition and influence factor.
This is very clear to me but I can’t seem to convince my friends. The idea of calorie in/ calories out is entrenched. I keep my insulin low ( fasting and the right food) because it feels better. The study on friendship is interesting. But I’m quietly self determining personality. Yesterday we went to lunch and they all ordered salads and drank tea. Lol.
The idea is so incredibly entrenched. And then they restrict calories for a while, lose weight, and go "Aha!". They obviously lost weight!

As for me,
an important factor in weight gain is strong cravings for carbs, which I can control by consuming fruit instead of refined processed food-like substances.
However, it's still hard for me to consume small portions of fruit...
I feel the urge to eat 5-6 apples a day or other kinds of fruit.. although I intermittent fast.

Greetings from Melissa from Italy 💖🍀🕊️☀️🌹
Fruit is full of fructose sugar, an addictive carbohydrates. To teach the body to burn fat you need to eat more saturated fat to keep insulin low. Insulin stops fat burning. Plant nutrients are very poorly absorbed in the gut. The most nutritious superfoods are liver, sardines and eggs.

Dr. Fung, though I agree with your discussion and analysis of the Framingham study I think that it also needs to be said that there are other possibilities than the apparent fact that it is ones family and friend circle that lead to obesity.
As an American I would add the possibility that there may be something that the government is putting in the water.
In reality/scientifically speaking this is a feasible possibility not only because it is known that the government definitely puts stuff in the water but the history of governments in general.
These are caveats frequently overlooked in medical “studies” in particular the Framingham study. Not infrequently these are government funded snd I believe interfered with “studies”.
That being said I always appreciate and pass on your information and techniques.

I've always had tremendous self-control just didn't have the right information. Low carb + exercise got me from 250-195lbs, Jason Fung got me to 170lbs. I literally live with obese family members, and I've had a positive influence on them. I weighed more in middle school than I do now
Good for you! You are an inspiration.
@@MaggieClarkSLC Thanks Margaret! Good luck
@@EhurtAfy Thank you! 12 pounds to go!
I knew it, it’s my fiends fault! Lol
All my friends and people I come in contact with are Overweight!
When I'm with people I feel very close to, I find I don't want (or need) as much food because I am being emotionally fed in the right way, through relationships. When Im lonely I eat much more. Maybe I need to listen to this again. Emotional eating is my biggest problem.
Hello Dear Dr Jason Fung.I hope you talk about solving fibromyalgia through fasting
fast and eat lots of eggs and get lots of sun you are deficient
Great video Dr Fung ! Thanks for your advice in reversing my NAFLD! Happy Memorial Day Weekend 🤓
THIS WAS AMAZING. It is the SCIENCE behind my husband sabotage and its power. It is the reason when school is in and our big events/gatherings are filled with goodies and treats I am drawn in and upset/stressed from saying no. Some people, you can't say no. A fellow teacher said she knew that I was on a "special diet" as a diabetic so she was bringing special cookies I could have. I said thank you but I don't eat cookies. She said they only used brown sugar and went to add ingredients I don't eat. I had to say no thank you several times and she walked away angry. I finally started just nodding and saying how nice, took the cookie and quietly put it in the trash to dodge the bullet. You really sometimes have to be a liar liar pants on fire and feel bad because they do not let up. At luncheons I order coffee and ask for a plate that I put in front of me and turn over to show I am not interested (sort of like in a restaurant when you turn over your coffee cup to silently say no thank you to coffee). Oh the things we do to be true to our health!!! This was a good video!! Thank you.
Thank you Dr. Great explanation as usual and lots of people need to hear and understand this particular issue.
Many years ago I came to a small town in Midwest as an exchange student, I gained over 10 pounds in one year. I went back to my home country of Japan. I lost all that weight back. I believe this was due to the food I ate and physical and social situations surrounding my life. Thank you for your work on fighting obesity and spreading the best information there is in the world.
I noticed when I go abroad I lost weight
“All that weight “... it was 10 pounds. Lol
10 lbs on a small frame makes a big difference.
@@sweetsanddandy8639 I don’t know about a BIG difference, but that’s not the point. The point was that it’s not hard to lose ten pounds, and to say “all that weight “ is a bit much. I’ll lose that in a week
Good for you not to let a small problem get bigger! Good work.
Obesity is also lifetime pandemic 🙄,thanks Dr.🙏😍
Thank you, once again, for a great informational video!
Great Vid Dr Fung. Had some stress, ate sugar for the first time in 11 Months and some popcorn. Out of my system, back to IF and Low carbs again today.
As always really informative and easy to understand. I lost 67kg in a year using fast and keto. And thanks for not giving me guilt as all other doctors that I am fat.
I lost 80lbs by implementing IF, 2 of my 3 brothers have lost considerable weight as a result of my success. My 3rd brother who lives a considerable distance from us and thus isn’t around as much continues to be over weight.
Posted this on your other video.
Dr. Fung, over the past 15 years, I’ve lost around 20-30lbs, 3 different times by reducing calories. One time was by eating an even 33%fat/carb/protein eating regimen, one was eating McDonald’s dollar menu everyday for a month, and one was a normal American high-carb/high-fat/moderate protein diet. Those calorie restrictions did come with a toll though. The constant gaining back of fat after a year or so, each time (could also be due to the long winters of low activity), reduced body temperature, and most likely a lethargic metabolism. I had to cut my calories more and more each time, to around 800-1000 kcal the second and third time. So it’s not sustainable.
I did the 20:4 intermittent fast for a year straight (following the high-carb/high-fat/moderate-protein diet) and lost 5 lbs while keeping the weight off. My success rate for cutting calories is 100% and my success rate for IM is 100%, but if you factor in long term weight sustainability, IM is the clear winner. Not sure why the study had single digit success rate for calorie restriction though, but maybe there are other factors that affected my weight loss, such as exercise. My activity level is fairly sedentary, but maybe I burn more than I think I do. Also I did go to bed very late throughout most of these diets/tests.
Now I’m following a 23:1 IM everyday and trying to eat less sugar, refined carbs, and protein, to keep my insulin low when I am eating, in order to lose my final 20lbs and keep it off.
Eating in a caloric surplus.
Friends 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣friends are overrated. Most times one is enough 😊spouses for sure increased the risk as well.
De Fung you are unique
Your way to think us very bright
I recommend your books to all my patients
In Islam it said that your friend will bring you to paradise or heel
God is fair We have a choice to choose our friends
Powerful information
Everyone realize that similar mechanisms are at play when it comes to alcohol etc, so it shouldn't be a surprise that the same holds true for habits regarding healthy or unhealthy lifestyle

Legend
Ironically a low carb + caloric restriction diet caused me to gain about 15 pounds over the course of one year. I then went natural vegan (higher carb) and am now at my goal weight. Just shows that everyone has got to figure this stuff out for themself.
The thing with friends is quite funny in my case because all of my friends are naturally skinny (I wasn't) and they were always convincing me to eat something unhealthy haha
Calorie is a unit of energy, and I doubt your body could create it's own energy, so in the end you just weren't in calorie deficit. Not that I would recommend keto to anyone, but that's why it didn't work for you.
@@PSA78 maybe.. but in the end I was eating under 1000 Calories and it didn't work out. It's probably how (Dr. Fung explains it) mather of a slowed down metabolism
@@angel4547 It really can't slow down that much, the highest ever observed is 500 kcal per day, and that in Biggest Looser. There's just no maybe about it.
Look at Biolayne last video or read the article with about 100 quotations regarding Fungs less than... smart idea. 👍
a great fan of your work . keep up the good work!
Mine as well
It seems to be the available diet and the shared diet that determines the direction of your weight. Bottom line, choose your friends wisely. Based on the start of this video, I was expecting you to discuss insulin level control, but then you went in a different direction.
“ being obese is no Fung, if this offends you, go Fung yourself” -Dr. Fung
sounds fungy
What da fung you talking about🤣
Wow!! Very informative. Been researching as I document my progress.
Maybe do some better research..?

Yes its the truth. Such good info.
For the societal-obesity contagion, I wonder how influential someone's connection to a beloved celebrity is... for instance, what percentage of Demi Lovato super fans have been experiencing weight gain?
If someone is gaining weight because their celebrity is then they have serious mental issues that need therapy
