Many people I knew still think that a calorie is a calorie and do not know the hormone effect on macronutrient we eat. Thank You for this basic explaination
I only eat 1 meal a day (dinner) and usually fully fast 2 days a week. I don't eat lunch at work and all my coworker tell me how unhealthy it is to skip meals as their fat asses are injecting another shot of insulin and I'm sitting over here with a 6 pack lol
Thanks for the short, simple explanation I can share with beginners as an introduction to low carb eating. People have no confidence they can stick to it because they have been trapped in the hunger cycle. It takes awhile for them to realize that a well-fed body does not want to eat constantly. You are a great teacher!
Yep. People think, OMG, I'll be too Hungry ALL the time! BUT the Awesome truth is that NOPE, you will hardly notice any true hunger pangs at all! I do intermittent fasting which is at least 20 hours per day. I am hardly ever truly hunger until my eating window. And for me, eating quality protein along with healthy fats and veggies works the Best! The protein and fats, along with the fiber, keeps a rock- steady blood glucose. No feeling of crashing or dragging thru the day feeling fatigued! (I would happily do extended fasting but I have medication that I need to take daily that requires a bit of food to be absorbed properly.) Anyways, I've done OMAD and Intermittent Fasting for over 2 years now and it's the Easiest thing in the world! And when you eat whole nutritious foods your body starts Healing and becoming Strong and Healthy!!😉😎
Many thanks Dr Fung. Within 37 days lost 10KG! Feeling more energetic and not tired all the time. Here's my regime. MON to SAT 20 hour Intermittent Fasting (IF). Start fast after lunch 1300 hrs and have breakfast the next day 0900 hrs. Been eating my regular food. Breakfast is fruit juice (apple, beetroot, orange, celery) with a cup of tea with full cream milk powder. Lunch is typical Asian i.e. stir fried vegetables, rice, fish/ meat. After SAT lunch i.e. 1300 hrs continue fasting for the whole of SUN and break fast on MON 0900 hrs. This is a 44 hour fast. Will carry and monitor. Now at optimal BMI and perhaps shorten the fasting hours to say 18 or 16 hours to arrest the weight loss. Normal routine includes exercise 20,000 steps a day. Note that IF is the only change to my routine, so can definitively say this is the one that made a huge difference :-)

Thank you for sharing this. I don’t have a problem fasting but mentally have told myself carbs are okay since I am fasting. Nope - it’s not working. I hope after 7 months you’re still doing well.
I literally feel it immediately when I eat refined carbohydrates, something like a bagel. I get a headache, I feel what feels like a blood sugar or insulin spike, and I feel like I have to take a nap. On the other hand I had an egg wrap with scrambled eggs, bacon, avocado, and a little bit of sour cream for my first meal at 4:30 pm yesterday. I had every intention of eating my second meal two hours later but I simply wasn’t hungry so that’s all that I ate yesterday. It’s over 18 hours later and I’m still not hungry, and that’s after walking eight miles this morning.
I've been doing the same thing over here. I seem to have naturally shifted to OMAD too. (not planned it just seems to be working out that way). This entire month I fasted at least 18 hours everyday with zero hunger. Most days I fasted even longer (with the longest being 40 hours). Feeling great and hiked 110 miles this month while the above was going down. I'm sold to this way of eating.
The insulin model of adiposity was definitely applicable to me because I lost a lot more weight since I started keto and intermittent fasting than I did when I was counting calories on a standard diet, and the weight has stayed off which I never did before. I’m not saying that this will be true for everyone because it probably depends on a lot of particular details, but it was certainly true for me, and thank goodness that people like Dr. Fung are out there because this information allows people to salvage their quality of life while the CICO crowd is out there arguing to show that they know what’s absolutely right for everyone.
I would think that in most folk that are eating highly refined carbs weight loss would occur. I think the biggest thing is that fats/protein satisfy your hunger better and as a result you are not as hungry and you eat less thus less calories are reduced. Restricting carbs has always worked for me in losing weight. Great reply.
@@DLTJR1959 Carbohydrates really are not the problem overall. Asians for example have white rice with every meal. However, they consume a lot of protein and fats. The problem is people consume too many carbs on their own. Bagels, sweets, soda, etc. I would never just eat a bowl of pasta for example without some source of protein. I would never wat rice on its own either.
What a great Doctor. None of the doctors I consult never take time to explain and give the correct advice like Dr. Fung. He is a National Treasure. I love when he says "It's coming right up...!!!

Brilliant video! I love the way Dr Fung makes his videos accessible to everyone and doesn't over complicate things or try to sell anything. It's information that everyone can relate to and makes perfect sense.
I ate a sugar cupcake the other day and instantly got a headache my body is reacting differently to it now that I’m in a month In on keto and IF & 20lbs down 🙌🔥
Thanks Dr.Jason. I am following his videos since the beginning of this year and learned a lot. I managed my carbs, protein and and fat intake ratio and as a result, I am a normal person now. I don’t feel sick nor hopeless. My clinic doctor told me that I am a pre diabetic and an obese person weighing 201 lbs and 5.8 Hba1c. Following Dr.Jason for the past 9 months, I lost 47 lbs and came to an Hba1c of 5.2. In my past 9 month diet journey, I reduced carbs to 20% and said goodbye to bread and rice. I think everyone has to watch Jason’ videos carefully and change his or her lifestyle. The results are good and will make you happy.
I have to say I was always one of those " a calorie us a calorie thinking people" however once Dr Fung explained that it is all based on how your body recognises/ or is able to extract the energy out of the food, that makes the difference. Dr Fung is the first person I heard that described this, this way, and it makes so much sense.
I agree! The fact that Dr. Fung can explain this factor with so much clarity and in a simple way is a reflection of his profound understanding of how our bodies work with respect to food ingestion! ;)
Same, even starting Fasting/time restricted eating I believed the key was still calories in/calories out. I have learned quite a bit in the last couple months.
Low carb and fasting helped me from 74kg to 63kg in less than a year, on top it no more joint pains,no more migren and out of the blue my skin tags gone!
Thank you Dr. Fung. I appreciate all the information. I am already 15#s down. God Bless you for sharing all this wonderul information about the benefits of fasting/low carbing.
He changed my life. I’ve always thought fasting was dangerous and crazy and only super religious believed in it. I was raised in a super Hispanic household so we always ate and that was the norm. If we didn’t eat, my mom would get concerned so of course I never fasted until I moved out of my house. I did my first 24 hour fast this week and I’ve never felt more energized and good about myself, knowing I’m doing something good for my body. I only fast one day a week for now, and eat healthy on my eating days (no eating out, mainly vegetarian with lots of grains, greens and protein but occasional chicken and fish now and then). I am also prediabetic and I have felt a huge difference. THANK YOU.
Valuable info for those, indeed, wanting to be healthier based on food intake. Following these facts becomes the chore for those informed. I found it simple, once I found a reason.
That’s what I always thought having pcos because I would try to lose weight with just being in calorie deficits and it would never work. But when I would fast and low carb then I would lose weight. All the weight loss UA-camrs always say it’s simply calorie in calories out.
My experience is the same that it’s not just calories in, calories out. Thank goodness for people like Dr. Fung because he’s sharing information that allows people to salvage their quality of life while the CICO crowd is arguing about how they’re absolutely right for the entirety of the universe and know everything. It’s really about their ego and their arrogance, not actually helping people.
Wow, another simple to understand breakdown of processing of foods. This is what is needed to truly “see” what is happening in our bodies after eating different foods. I have a good bit of knowledge of this subject but you took it down to a level that is so much more helpful to us. Calories in relationship to hormones in relationship to what really is happening to what we are eating. Thank you, again. You have helped us to much!!
I love these videos by Dr Fung because they succinctly encapsulate the various aspects of diet and it's effect on the body. The one on carbs is good in that it explains simply the different types of carbs and whether they contribute to weight gain. Not all calories/carbs have the same effects so not all carbs are "bad" or should I say have negative consequences on the body. These videos and your books have been useful in pointing me in the right direction in my attempts to change what I eat and to also incorporate intermittent fasting as a tool to lose and maintain my weight. Please keep making these videos as we need many advocates on the proper approach to food in order to mitigate the effects of a "modern food environment"
Dr. Fung, you are a fantastic teacher. Thank you so very much for these short but very informative videos. They are based on complex scientific research that you make easy to grasp. We are blessed to have access to your generous expertise! All the best for you!
You are utterly incredible! I am so thankful to you for your videos and just sharing this knowledge with us. I think that if more people started to view weight loss as more complex than the widely used and simplified concept of “calories in vs calories out” then more people would have success. It’s truly life changing just to learn about weight and fat loss in terms of how our bodies actually process those foods, calories, etc and that it has more to do with insulin than anything else we’re doing!! Thank you for enlightening me! I just started my fitness/weight loss journey with the goal being to do a body recomposition (loose fat and tone up muscle). I did a comprehensive body scan and found out that I have very high amounts of lean body mass and lean muscle mass, and that my overall fat percentage was optimal. But conversely, the basic BMI chart tells me I’m almost obese. So I’ve gone on this whole time wondering why I don’t look as heavy as others with my same height and weight…and thinking I needed to lose a lot more fat than I even have on my body!! Do you face any recommendations for women with high levels of lean/muscle mass and relatively high level of fat mass who wants to tone up and lose fat? I wondering if the calorie deficit I’ve been told to use is way too restricting and therefore causing my body to just burn less calories.

The problem arises when we are children… We don’t know anything about sugar and candy and then once we are introduced to it we are bribed with it if we don’t finish our dinner and then it ends up being OK well,, just eat this much dinner and you can have your dessert, just finish One more piece of broccoli. Imagine how healthy we would be if we were never introduced to Sugar as a child. I struggle to go a full day without sugar… But when I do I feel so much better the next day
207 to 171 in 4 months. Its so easy to do, just do it. I eat my fill of fats and protein at lunch and dinner. Delicious foods. I do not count calores and i do not exercise. I still lose weight.
Jason, You're on the right track. As overweight people, when we eat things like cheeseburgers and pizza, the hormones responsible for weight gain spike above normal. A naturally thin persons hormones don't. When we eat things like fruits and vegetables, or even just meat, those hormones don't spike above normal. However when we combine meat and plants, or eat a facsimile of that combination in the form of processed foods, those hormones do spike above normal and they suppress the production of the satiety hormones. This clears the way for the person to overeat. By the way, this is how all addictions work, which is what causes obesity in the first place. It has little to do with hunger or a lack of energy. It's almost all about satisfying the person's addiction to food. Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
I love Dr. Fung. He's the best science teacher I've ever had. I haven't listened to his videos in a while and re-listening just confirms how helpful his videos are in truly understanding what's really going on in regards to diet, dieting, food, and how us humans biologically (and psychologically) process it all. It helped me to understand that it's not all about lack of self-control and being weak. It's nice to know that over refined and junk foods actually cause the cravings that cause the body to feel the need for "more, more, more." Knowing how it works enabled me to get it under control when I eat too many "goodies," which happens, probably, even to the best of us. After all, we are surrounded by junk food -- good, bad, fattening, and worth billions of dollars of profits, also. Dr. Fung has so many videos that help to explain the complicated process of the simple act of eating. I highly recommend them to you.

I only eat 1 meal a day (dinner) and usually fully fast 2 days a week. I don't eat lunch at work and all my coworker tell me how unhealthy it is to skip meals as their fat asses are injecting another shot of insulin and I'm sitting over here with a 6 pack lol
@@makokx7063 wonderful... you are living a Proper Human Diet...
Thanks for the short, simple explanation I can share with beginners as an introduction to low carb eating. People have no confidence they can stick to it because they have been trapped in the hunger cycle. It takes awhile for them to realize that a well-fed body does not want to eat constantly. You are a great teacher!
Thank you doc
(I would happily do extended fasting but I have medication that I need to take daily that requires a bit of food to be absorbed properly.)
Anyways, I've done OMAD and Intermittent Fasting for over 2 years now and it's the Easiest thing in the world!
I started intermittent fasting (mostly 18:6, but I mix in 20:4 and an occasional OMAD) in mid September and as of today November 3rd, I've lost 17.5 lbs. I can't believe it! I still have a long way to go, but my body LOVES this way of eating. I feel great, my cravings are under control, I don't feel deprived, and I am shrinking! For the first time since gaining all this weight, I truly believe I will be successful and I will reach my ultimate dream goal weight. Thank you thank you thank you!
Update: Down 34 pounds now! 1-28-22
Weight loss is just a side affect, I believe best reward is staying healthy and giving your body right kind of combustion on right times.
@@Lejyonerius I agree!!! But that being said I'm now down 28.6 lbs, and that feels pretty awesome. I haven't weighed this in over 5 years! I'll take this side effect all day long hahaha
@@WingsofFlight-n5u I do in moderation. I don't eliminate any food groups.
40# in 5 months at 58yo!🎉 Listened to these videos every night for reinforcement while falling asleep. Strict low carb 16:8. It was easy!
That’s what I’m doing now, low carb and 16:8, with a little mix of increased walking.
Thank you for sharing this. I don’t have a problem fasting but mentally have told myself carbs are okay since I am fasting. Nope - it’s not working. I hope after 7 months you’re still doing well.
I went carb n sugar free for 3 years. Use to weigh 435lbs. Lost 150lbs. Don't need my diabetic meds anymore. Feel liberated.
@@jeffmcelroy5437 wow
Same. I don’t feel as hungry even when I have carbs now.
Dr. Jason Fung and Dr. Sten Ekberg are the best! 👍🙂
Thank you Dr. Fung. It’s refreshing to get this valuable information instead of you pushing products like other Fasting/Keto Doctors. Fasting and eliminating snacking from my daily routine has changed my life .
Thank you dr. Fung eternally!! I finally got out of calorie prison and feel amazing now!!
Brilliant video!
I love the way Dr Fung makes his videos accessible to everyone and doesn't over complicate things or try to sell anything.
It's information that everyone can relate to and makes perfect sense.
I ate a sugar cupcake the other day and instantly got a headache my body is reacting differently to it now that I’m in a month In on keto and IF & 20lbs down 🙌🔥
How long do u fast??
That’s great! You can trust your body to tell you what it doesn’t like .
I have never heard this explained so perfectly! When we eat we’re eating a set of instructions 👍🏻
I just ate some lasagna and I feel like a fat bloated tub of lard.
Tomorrow is a new month a new day, and a new mindset. God bless 🙌
Me too...
LOL 😂😂😂 “A Tub of Lard”😂😂😅
Food instructions really clicks and can be explained simply to other people also
The best explanation of calories, their use and how it all relates to hormones and physiology I have ever heard. Thanks so much for making this video.
Best person in the world doing a service for humility with out charging for this free logic thank you sir you saved my life
We are fearfully and wonderfully made .
Amen brother
THANK YOU.
I love your videos. They make so much sense. I'm actually enjoying life again at 71 years young. Thank you Dr Jason Fung.
Jason, you are no 1 in the world.

Valuable info for those, indeed, wanting to be healthier based on food intake. Following these facts becomes the chore for those informed. I found it simple, once I found a reason.
My favorites doctor. Dr. Jason Fung is finnnneee and knows what he's talking about!
This is the best explanation of how/what to eat to avoid being fat. Listen for 12minutes to change your life. Seriously (I’m down 75 lbs, FYI)
Thanks dr fung. Great info as usual, simply explained! Wake up world listen to dr fung
Great doctor. You are doing extraordinary human service.
Yep, I agree. Counting calories really didn’t work much for me. Fasting has been much more successful and actually easier for me.
I'm so deeply grateful for this information. I've been on this lifestyle for only 1 month and the fat inches are vanishing 😊😊😊💕💕💕😀😀😀
Excellent explanation, Jason!
Thank you!
I just want to say THANK YOU Dr. Fung! Your saving many lives and we appreciate all that you do for us here. Knowledge is Power! ❤ 🙏
Dr Fung, you are great providing simple explanations that makes things clear. I am doing IF for 2 months and I am feeling great. Thank you.
Incredibly important and strategic lesson…!!! So grateful to be able to learn from you Dr.Fung..God bless you..
Dr. Fung, the pictures and wording displayed on the screen in relation to what you were discussing were very helpful. Thank you
Keep spreading the truth. It will set people free from the weight that damages their lives.
I love these videos by Dr
Fung because they succinctly encapsulate the various aspects of diet and it's effect on the body.
Thank you for another excellent video. You explain things so clearly.
Dr. Fung, you are a fantastic teacher. Thank you so very much for these short but very informative videos. They are based on complex scientific research that you make easy to grasp. We are blessed to have access to your generous expertise! All the best for you!
I reckon this is your best video yet. Clear, simple and concise!
Best man when it comes to the point
Sai Ram. Thank you so much. You have helped Self in the control of diabetes -- & thousands of people around the world -On behalf of All-- Thank You Dr From the heart 🌹

Phenomenal information Dr. Fung. I think that was the missing component for me to live a lean healthy life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart❤️
I look forward to your Sunday videos which I share with my IF group. Thank you so much, Dr Fung.
Yes, it's very physical addiction, not psychological at all. And you can get over it by fasting or slowly reducing the bad foods.
Wow, I so wish I knew this important information decades ago, but I sure am glad to know it now! Thank you Dr. Fung!🙏✅👍❤️💖💙💗💛💜🧡
I love Dr.
