  • Carbohydrate restriction is a key component of most dietary plans on how to lose weight. But all carbs are not the same. Some carbs should be severely restricted if you want to lose weight, but others are relatively benign. Dr Jason Fung discusses the different types of carbs for weight loss. 00:27 🥐 *Carbohydrates vary in types: refined, unrefined starchy, unrefined fibrous, and fruits. Their impact on weight loss differs significantly.*
02:58 🍩 *Refined carbohydrates like white flour, bread, pasta, cereals, and sugars cause rapid glucose spikes, insulin surges, and potential weight gain.*
04:51 🍰 *Added sugars in processed foods, high fructose corn syrup, and refined grains like white rice contribute to weight gain and insulin resistance.*
06:30 🥔 *Unrefined starchy carbohydrates like certain grains (rye, barley), root vegetables (potatoes, sweet potatoes), if consumed in moderation, offer fiber and can be better options than refined carbs.*
08:03 🍏 *Fruits contain fructose, but their fiber content makes overeating difficult. Berries are better options than sweeter fruits, which have been bred to be more sugary.*
09:52 🥦 *Non-starchy, fibrous vegetables (like leafy greens, legumes) are beneficial for weight loss due to their high fiber content, minimal impact on insulin, and ability to induce a feeling of fullness.*

There was no money for or shops selling processed food in the village. They ate alot of carbs but eveything they ate were either grown, caught or forraged by their very 2 hands.

I have been struggeling with my weight all my life since my early teens. It's a lifestile and not a diet. I have been doing IF for a couple of months so far, started doing OMAD and prolonged fasts recently. I have never felt better and I enjoy my mental clarity. Thank you Dr. Fung!

I do Intermittent Fasting. It’s a system where you choose an eight hour period to do all your eating with, at least, about 4 hours minimum before bedtime. In other words you have to go to bed almost hungry. The results are incredible. Your body functions revert to what they were when you were young, testosterone levels shoot up and your system seems like it’s doing its own housekeeping, conserving tons of energy.

Thanks for your explanation. I had a debate with a friend who major in nutrition. She believes that as long as all the food is consumed in moderation, they would be fine, and balancing each other, there is no really such foods as the best or healthiest foods. I am on keto and believe that certain foods are in fact better than the others in terms of certain purpose such as losing weight. I think it is rather idealistic to believe that all foods are created equally.

Thank you so much for all of your amazing information Dr. Fung. Since I started following you, Dr. Berg and Dr. Jamnadas, I am finally able to lose weight gained in the past few years and after knee replacement surgery. After trying EVERY plan imaginable, I started IF at the beginning of October, 2023. Fast forward to now, I have lost 12 lbs., going from 200 lbs. to 188. I am a 55 year old female who is going through menopause. I fast 16-18 hours per day and eat two meals a day without snacking, which means I'm also fasting in between meals. My goal weight is 165 so 23 lbs. to go. I am struggling with not getting enough fiber while attempting to eat low carb, as evidenced by bathroom trips. Adding legumes and lentils as you suggest in this video will help me tremendously. I'm in this for the marathon as opposed to a sprint. Thank you again!!!!

Best and easy way to cook is just like soup add your favorite broth and spices( garlic, onion powder, ginger, turmeric, ....) and let it cook. Or just boil and use to make cold salad. You can always add protein( chicken, meat, fish, shrimp, eggs).
I usually cook two cups of the legumes( Lentil), store in fridge, makes four to five meals during week, easy and simple , 5 minutes preparation. Lots of UA-cam videos out there.

What you said about today’s fruit no longer resembling the fruit that our great grandparents ate is so true, and my mom has been saying this for a long time also. It’s really sad that it is very difficult to get hold of fruit that hasn’t been modified in some way.
    Thank you so much.

I’ve really noticed that clementines have basically no orangey flavor at all, the juice is almost like water. When foods don’t taste like we remember from years ago I think some of us keep eating trying to find something that tastes like we remember to satisfy our hunger.

Dr. Jason Fung is my favorite doctor, if eat lentils with a dollop of butter and vegetables, without any other carb in my, sugar spikes are minimal. Just don’t overload on them if you sprout lentils with skin like mung the carb reduces further. So glad that Dr Fung gives a green light on this. What a kind soul he is to help so many people with metabolic issues. May god bless him❤️❤️

Sugar was an evolutionary advantage to gaining weight in the warm seasons, to get through harsh winters with little sources of food. So people who can gain weight had an evolutionary advantage. But not now, we have the same food in the stores year round.

I've been doing Keto for about 6 months now and I'm just now starting to watch your videos since so many other online doctors (and patients) often refer to your work. I have to say I was quite surprised to learn that legumes get a green light. I've always heard that they were way too high in carbs and they were off the list of approved foods for the Keto diet. But it makes sense that the high fiber negates most of the carbs. Im cautiously optimistic about this and think I will try adding some into my diet here and there to see how it goes. Thank you!

One thing that's rarely mentioned is selective breeding and genetic modification. Wheat for example used to have way less gluten for most of the time humans have been eating it.

    • @jgrysiak6566

Ear whole grains only, nothing white!

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 2 роки тому

I do not think the wheat changes are the issue. I think it is the fact that wheat is now ubiquitous and easy to grow and then manufacture into foods.
Those processed foods are easy to eat and and very abundant. Most modern people are eating for convenience and flavor rather than survival.
This has now created a culture that eats seven times a day very easily absorbed carbohydrates that combined with age cause lots of problems.
