How shocking was this episode? Dr. Jason Fung really changed my mind and showed several places I had misconceptions about nutrition, hormones, and cancer. What healthy myths do you want me to explore in future episodes?
I want to make a bet with this doctor: we count the calories he eats and maintain that at something like 500 below his calorie expenditure per day. We measure his weight now and 4 weeks later. He can stop exercising and do whatever he likes. If he is right he won't lose weight (because calorie counting doesn't work) and if he is wrong he will lose the weight. Seriously why are the doctors that don't understand the basics of physics and conservation of energy? If the body uses x amount of energy per day and consumes less, fat will be burned to produce that difference in energy. That is the bottom line, no medical study will ever refute it as this fact is much higher on the totem pole than all of medicine and biology. The body can't adjust this away because human retain a steady temperature of 37c and also have to keep your heart pumping etc., so there is not a huge amount the body can do to adjust to minimize expenditure. Also, there are countless studies that show significant reductions in weight for various types of fasting/diets so I don't know what is he talking about denying they exist?? The actual problem is keeping the weight off because if you lose the weight too fast without exercising your metabolism will/might adjust to a lower plateau and your hormones will try to get you back to your starting weight (by having you feel hungry until fat storage is restored), in some cases even years after the diet. I lost over 8kg myself in 4 months by counting calories initially: I made sure I left out the types of foods with a lot of calories like all sweetened drinks, chips etc. crap and started walking to burn something like 500 calories extra per day compared to before. 700 calorie deficit, is about 100g in body fat and that is what I observed in real-world results also. So far the weight isn't coming back, but even if it does, no doctor can tell me counting calories and having a deficit won't work because it's obvious that it does and I have personally verified it also.
If you really want to do your audience a good service Tom, bring on someone like Layne Norton to dismantle 90% of the so-called information Dr. Fung is telling you. It’s really irresponsible of you Tom to have only one point of view and a dangerous point of view at that, on your show when it comes to something as important as losing weight and health. You should either have someone else on the show at the time so they can have an actual debate or follow this show up by having someone that actually has scientific knowledge in the weight-loss Industry Like Layne Norton.

This was really technical, but what I got from this was: -no processed foods. -no sugar -very minimal complex carbs -ample protein -don't snack all day - allow fasting time for your insulin level to go down so that your body can release the fat.... I think I got that right. Correct me if I'm erroneous please.
@@mr5608 In my eyes, intermittent fasting is only for health benefits, just like keto, you will see weight loss results but they won't be long term. there are no miracle diets, every diet has pros and cons. You just have to stay conscious of what you eat if you want to lose weight - eat healthier (easier said than done right ;))
@@Phoenix-rw3nh In a year, I'm down 60 pounds, 60 more to go. Started with intermittent. 2 meals a day, 6-8 hour window, trying not to snack between. The meals need to have good carbs (no/low sugars, breads etc). Now what is really interesting is I did a combo of just eating every other day (feast/fast). Lost 6 pounds in two weeks as I wanted to just be done with the loss part and get to maintenance. Then I tried it again June 1 but instead of doing good carbs on the alt days my wife and daughter cooked a lot of sweets (cookies, cup cakes, bread). I also ordered a pizza. I also didn't do the two meal on the feast days, sometimes eating dinner. Even though I was only slightly calorie positive on my feast days, I gained weight. Really annoying because I didn't eat at all for 30+ hours every other fast day. So I'm back to every other day, then sticking with healthy 6-8 hour eating on feast days. Healthy = a protein, veggies, fruit, yogurt, etc. Again losing very quickly. I'm also walking. 3-6 miles a day with a good audio book on my iphone. Basically, high insulin foods seem to screw my goals. I hope that helps. It is a process for sure. My current challenge is that I can't go back to those bad foods even if disciplined with fasting. I'm considering trying longer than 36 hour fasts but haven't yet.

I did intermittent fasting and a clean carb diet for 3 months and was dismayed that I only lost 2 lbs. My energy level never improved. I discovered, through no help from medical testing that I was iodine deficient. I started taking a kelp supplement and the weight started falling off me within a couple of weeks even without fasting. It's important for doctors to look at the thyroid gland and deficiencies in people with weightloss resistance. Not just insulin.

He is indeed He must be an "earth-Angel" He helped me to find the perfect solution to heal my body through intermittent fasting. Instead of continuing the vicious circle with insulin, I find that intermittent fasting is helping a lot. I finally see normal blood sugar values now and then, that I haven't seen for years. I am only on my 2nd week , and I find the most difficult thing is to know how much insulin I have to take in the evening, so the sugar doesn't go too low. I do intend to make intermittent fasting part of my life style. If I don't change my life style, the diabetes is going to kill me slowly, and that doesn't have to happen if you do intermittent fasting, because IM will help your body to self heal itself.
Dr. Jason Fung was really one of the earliest leading medical practitioners that rolled this out. I think well over a decade ago he was already trying this in his clinical practice when there was nary a whisper of keto or fasting. I have been tracking the work done in this field since the earliest data came out. it's really quite remarkable. I wish he gets more acknowledge as an early pioneer - he's not advertising himself but really in the clinic helping his patients. Kudos Dr. Fung!
🌟✨I love Dr. Jason Fung, but FYI, Dr. Alan Goldhamer has had a fasting clinic called True North Health Center here in California since the 1980's where they specialize in medically supervised water only fasting. There's tons of his interviews here on UA-cam as well.✨🌟

Upton Sinclairs book on the health benefits of fasting came out in 1914 I believe, Paul C Bragg wrote a book on fasting and got it published in 1974, Angus Barbieri's fast happened in 1965, which was one of the most meticulous studies done on fasting even to this day, and Atkins has been promoting such things since the 70s, mostly taking off in the 90s. There is a lot of very old data which is mostly cited by doctors like Fung, it's only just finally started going mainstream for about a decade or two.
Dr Fung is EXCELLENT. His reasoning is so crystal clear. We should all be cutting out a meal or two to instigate a period of intermittent fasting every day. We run on hormones!
In the medical field for people requiring tube feeding, the practice is usually to infuse it slowly 24hrs/day to avoid dumping a lot all at once 3 times/ day. Over my 40-plus years as a nurse, I've questioned dieticians on several occasions about this continuous infusion & not giving the body a rest from the digestive process. I was told it's done to assure enough calories are being given. I have also noted that people on long term tube feedings always gained weight. Always. Even if they had been at normal weight range throughout their lives before the illness. This interview finally explains the weight gain! It's not about calories, it's about the constant stimulation for the body to release insulin. THANK YOU! I always knew there was SOMETHING going on we didn't understand.
You can have as much insulin you like but if you're not eating excess calories you won't gain a gram of weight. My mother was tube fed her last few years and she certainly didn't gain any weight because of it, so there goes that nonsense also.
@@cyberfunk3793 did you happen to catch the part where he said they had diabetics reduce their calories an increased their insulin & they all gained weight? That's what I was refering to. Actually this is the 2nd doctor that I've heard state that insulin is a culprit in weight gain. Saying that 1 person you know didn't respond the same doesn't invalidate the medical findings. That's like saying you know someone who smoked their whole adult life & lived to be 90 cancer free. That doesn't mean smoking doesn't cause cancer. @@saratonnan He didn't name the study, but sure if you decrease your calories only very little, increase insulin and stop moving completely you might gain weight: that doesn't mean calorie counting doesn't work, it means the people gaining weight were not in a deficit and if they thought they were, they are bad at counting calories. If your base-rate is 1700 for a day you do nothing but sleep and you restrict your calories to that level per day, you will surely lose weight on a normal day with movements even if your body tries to adjust and slow down your metabolic rate by something like 10%.

As far as habits it would be to do some kind of fasting lifestyle: either 2 meals a day no snacks, one meal a day no snacks it all depends on which one fits you better. For diet: keep your carbs low, avoid vegetable oils and food that comes in a box with ingredients you have never heard of or can't spell. If you have high blood pressure or diabetes do not start fasting without medical supervision. Dr Fung and others have programs to help with this. I did 2 meal a day and low carb and lost 30 lbs, reversed my early diabetes and most importantly my suicidal depression, anxiety and anger issues completely disappeared. Dr Fung was the man who started me on this new life.

@@iseektruth Was out of town so just now getting back online. My meals have changed over the past two years as I have learned more facts about the huge differences between what we have been told is "healthy" food and was the facts actually are. One thing to know is that I can eat the same meal day after day and enjoy it, I do not require "variety" (which I believe is an artificial concept ingrained in us by the food industry, restaurant biz, etc since back in day no human had access to the variety of different foods from all over the world and today's manufactured food is basically the same 3 ingredients: grains, sugar, seed oils they just fool us by making the "food" and package look different). Having said that for lunch I will have about 3/4 lbs of some meat, like lamb shoulder chop, beef burger meat, ribeye, lamb burger meat. Along with that I have some cheese, real pork rinds. On occasion I enjoy some steamed veggies limited to cauliflower, asparagus, brussel sprouts. Then for dinner I will have 2-3 strips of bacon and 3-4 eggs, some avocado in season, some olives , more cheese although a lot of times I am stuffed before I get to the cheese...I eat beef liver about once a week, I mix 1lb of beef burger with 1lb of liver that I chop into small bits and that lasts me 2-3 meals, sometimes I do some eggs with the leftover meat, For me the more animal products I eat and less veggies the better I feel up to a point, I find that just a bit of veg on a regular basis works best. I also have wild caught sardines on a regular basis. Oysters when I can get them fresh also. Hope this helps
Jason helped me with my health 4 yrs ago.I lost almost 30 lbs by fasting and cutting carbs.I had a headache for 5 days when I started.After that I felt great.I have kept the weight off since then.

Veganism is very hard to do and be healthy, without much nutritional knowledge, and is an irresponsible suggestion to those who don’t know what they’re doing. There is much less dangerous diets, that can keep you healthy at the same time.

🤠Most of the people who are are critical of Dr Fung have never been really overweight for a long period of time. I started at 314 pounds in November of 2015 and got down to 225.6 pounds in April of 2020.
@@globeagentronburgundy9747 I lost 30 lb in 90 days by doing what Fung and others teach. I’m 6’ and went from 220 to 190. I have a bad back so I can’t risk it by exercising. I was completely sedentary. I have metastatic cancer and that’s why I dropped the carbs and extended my fast. But I ate as much as I wanted during the eating window. Increased fat intake during the fasting period by adding either butter or MCT oil to my coffee, or snacking if I had to on high fat foods like olives and approved nuts. My wife tried increasing her exercise and counting calories and she just gained weight, exactly like he explains. She switched to low carb high fat with intermediate fasting and dropped about 30 lbs in 90 days.

I have reversed my insulin resistence in 3 months by fasting (16:8, 18:6 depending on a day) and eating low carb (LCHF). My weight just flew away (15-20 kg), which was unthinkable to me before, since I used to spend months fighting to lose a kilo. I cannot describe you how I feel. Like I saved my life, literally. Fantastic! Yes, weight gain is often related to trauma and feeling safe in the world. When I was working in health education I learned that when a little kid suddenly gains weight, it can be that she is being sexually abused. Jon Gabriel (The Gabriel Method) gives meditations with his book/weight loss program. Same for my mom, she lost weight in her 60s by working with a spiritual body worker healer who removed all kinds of “unseen” baggage. Mum is 82 and slim and physically healthy now, swims and goes to the gym. Thank you for sharing your story.

I’m a nurse and I am just blown away, this is the best anatomy and physiology lesson I have ever heard.. Dr Fung made a complete left hand turn from fasting to Cancer...and started a lecture regarding cancer and why we can’t find a cure. I am so astounded about the how and why we get cancer, it remains elusive. and for the most part without cure, .. Life ... even after 4 billion years has proven ... that we are just now, beginning to scratch the surface, when it comes to any kind of understanding.. as to where we come from and how we have evolved to this point...
My wife and I found Dr Fung about 2 1/2 years ago right after she found lecture videos by Thomas Seyfried. Seyfried had furthered the work of Warburg and discovered how to reverse cancer in lab rats using the ketogenic diet and a drug that inhibits glutamine. But he can’t get funding to further his research. If you like this, you’ll find Dr Seyfried’s lectures equally as enlightening and question why his findings aren’t front page news. Sloan Kettering and MD Anderson are now experimenting with employing the ketogenic diet with traditional cancer treatments, but you’ve got to dig to learn this stuff. At the time, most of Fung’s videos were more related to insulin, diabetes and weight loss. It’s interesting to see he is now addressing cancer. 37:30 “When you suppress the immune system, it increases your risk of getting these cancers because it is the immune system which is playing this anti-cancer role” - Fung I was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer 6 years ago this month at age 48. My dad was diagnosed with both prostate cancer and a rare, aggressive form of leukemia a month later (he got both results the same day). His leukemia followed on the heels of a bad kidney infection. He hadn’t been sick in 45 years until that kidney infection. I now believe his leukemia was occupation related since I learned that leukemia is one of the side effects of myodisplastic bone marrow. He worked with high voltage electricity for 37 years and was trained to work 500K volt lines hot the past 15 years. I now believe the high voltage affected his bone marrow and his immune system kept the cancer at bay until the kidney infection compromised his immune system. I believe my prostate cancer MAY be inherited but I spent my 30s and 40s under a great deal higher stress level than my father, his brother uncle and maternal grandfather ever dealt with (except a brief time in my father’s late 40s when he lost his family’s farm). I know my testosterone level dipped in my late 30s and while they believe prostate cancer feeds on testosterone, studies indicate high testosterone levels are actually protective. My cancer is much more aggressive than theirs. My uncle had an entire career of shift work. And we know that disrupting the circadian rhythm compromises the immune system. So we’ve been learning all this latest research the past 3 years and can’t figure out why the medical community is so far behind. I would actually hand my oncologist copies of published research and he wouldn’t even look at it.
Can't & won't recognize the cure because they gotta keep the money coming in. We have the cure for cancer with a Whole Food Plant Based diet but there's no money in it for doctors, hospitals & big pharma!
I was an obese preteen and went on a calorie counting diet, which did work as I went from 160 to about 130. Unfortunately it also led to an eating disorder, namely bulimia which plagued me on and over for decades! I’m ketovore to carnivore (depending on my day or week) now and it works to keep me slim without worrying about calories as I just follow my hunger and satiety cues to the best of my ability. It’s also healed my migraines and chronic headaches
@@thegrimreaper7 It was the dieting mentality, among all the other emotional issues, that led to bulimia for me, not just calorie counting. However, calorie counting can in itself lead to problems. Does this clarify it? Have you ever experienced bulimia, binge eating or overeating disorders or anything else?
@@amytrumbull156 Fortunately no, and I'm sorry it happened to you. I just didn't see the connection itself. I guess that obsessing or stressing about one more thing can tip a person over the edge. I take calorie counting only as reference to try and keep myself not to binge eat or snack, I'm trying not to go crazy over it but I can see how it could affect someone who has other issues in parallel. I've never clicked a video so fast! Dr Fung is someone I've been following for over a year now and he changed the way I think about calories and health immensely. His advice has seriously changed my life for the better, THANKS for having him on!!!
You cannot break the laws of thermodynamics if you don't restrict your energy (calories) to be in a calorie deficit in some type of way you simply can't lose weight.
@@ItachiUchiha-oj3iw He's not suggesting you can. He's suggesting that the you eating 3000 calories a day of mostly fats and proteins and limiting sugar intake does not have the same basal metabolic rate as the you that eats 2000 calories a day of fat free yogurts and cheeses
I was fasting for a while after watching all these videos from Dr. Fung. I felt healthy, lost some weight. Then I kind of fell out of all the good habits after a few months. Rewatching this video just reminded me of how much of a difference it made when I fasted and how many benefits I just completely forgot fasting had. I don’t understand how it can be so easy to do all the wrong things, but it’s just as easy to do the right with the right info. I just need to rewatch this every so often. It’s all true and it works.
The truth is that it is hard to lose weight but another truth is fat is ugly. The only one who can help you lose weight is you, QUIT EATING SO MUCH. The Lord helps those who help themselves. QUIT EATING SO MUCH
Dr. Dung has changed my life. I’ve lost 40 pounds in the last two months. My friends think I’m crazy eating one meal a day! I’ll never go back to the way I use to eat. I’m off my high blood pressure and cholesterol meds.
I am 53 and have battled obesity for 20 years . This method is showing results for me in my first week . I am off my insulin and metformin with my fasting glucose usually in the low 80mg range .
Intermittent fasting has, as a 52 year old man, changed my life. A regular exerciser I could never shift my belly fat. Intermittent fasting changed that within weeks.
@Saul Goodman there’s no possible way for you to know that without knowing the details of his fasting. And you are not accounting for how long he was in ketosis or activating autophagy. Theoretically , a person can eat one meal per day, consume a full days calories and still loss weight. Im not sure how versed you are with Dr. Fund’s research, but he clearly states the exact opposite of what your stating. That being said I disagree with your comment.
@Saul Goodman the entire first part of the video is dedicated to disproving you argument, you should listen to it. Better yet, read his book, “The Obesity Code” and you’ll understand that you’re incorrect. Countless studies have proven to that caloric reduction diets fail 100% of the time, because 1. They are unsustainable and 2. Your body adapts to the reduction in calories. This is why we have an obesity and diabetes epidemic, we spend decades telling people that fat makes you fat, you just have eat less and move more. Good chat, thanks. Take care.
@Saul Goodman sorry I didn’t see the last sentence of your post. Fasting is not a new trend! People have been fasting since biblical times. Fasting is a part of every major religion. Dr. Fung isn’t promoting anything other than knowledge, he’s not selling a product or program so what purpose does is serve to “jump on a trend”?
@Saul Goodman I disagree. While true the foods you named are the worst possible foods imaginable, it is the effect on the body that is doing the damage, not the calories. The constant high insulin loads and constant high glucose levels brought on by the sugar, carbohydrates, chemicals, manmade oils, bleached flour, etc are preventing the proper function of the body and causing excessive fat storage. Regardless if it’s 3000 calories of garbage or 2000 calories of garbage, you’re not going to lose weight. The body has two modes: feeding or fasting, that’s it. If you’re constantly feeding you’re never allowing your insulin and glucose levels to drop, therefore you will never access your stored fat. Dr Fung used a great analogy in the video, he said imagine your body is like a tanker truck, you have a huge tank of fuel behind you, but you can’t get it to the engine. This is because you’re constantly filling the main tank, instead of accessing the stored fuel. If you don’t allow your body to process your stored fat, you’re not going to lose weight. The only way to allow access to the fat stores is to stop eating and allow the body to process itself. This is called ketosis, your body is burning fat for fuel, instead of glucose. The added benefit of fasting for extended period is autpghagy, which is the body’s natural process of cleaning up the junk and garbage you accumulate like damage cells, excess proteins, etc. You can gain some benefits from ketosis through exercise, and more through carbohydrate reduction. But neither requires calorie reduction. When I was eating the carnivore diet I was eating a pound of steak per day, during my one meal. That’s about 1500 calories and I still lost weight, I didn’t reduce my calories at all, I changed what and when i ate.

I began my OMAD diet journey on: 16/12/2021 weighting (80.3kg) And today on: 5/1/2022 my current weight is ( 75.5kg) Am happy but I should’ve tried exercising and moving more to help my body get rid of all the extra fat..am happier,healthier and active feels like it’s the new version of me.
I love Dr. Jason Fung. He was the first doctor that I followed on youtube, listening to him helped me to loose the fat I gained from years of very stressful work by engaging in fasting. I had not heard of this cancer theory before, thanks for bringing it to my attention, Tom Bilyeu.
I learned of him through UA-camr Dr Eric Berg. They did a collab a few yrs ago. I believe Dr berg was the 1st who spoke on Keto/Carb/ intermittent fasting

Ive lost 47.2kg thus far since having my son at 105kg. During Ramadan i was 65.5 lost 5.5kg, then i combined that fasting with walking exercises and carnivore. In 6 days im down to 57.6 so lost 2.4kg under a week 😊 i am so hapoy about that, the scale is moving and im seeing positive physical changes to my body even abs which were buried under the fat for 29yrs! I will continue with that diet for a month, GW is 48kg for my short height of 4.10". Then transition to keto with 16-8 fast, exercise 3/4 times a week end of May. As a lifestyle change for life then on🙏🏼 its been a long, struggling WL journey, finally im getting closer to my GW everyday🎉

I read Obesity Code book and it made so much sense. We’ve all met that person who is over weight and swears they’re eating very little. Secretly we don’t believe them because we are so programmed to believe the calories in calories out model. Now maybe we can cut those people some slack.
I agree. Thank you for saying that. They haven't received the right info. Some people still believe lower calories and lower fat will help them lose weight. Doctors, nutritionist, trainers, etc are still telling people this. Along with 6 small meals a day.

All I know is that 40 years ago I first heard about calories in versus calories out. I started counting my daily calories and kept it around 1500 calories a day until I reached my goal. These days I consume 2000 to 2200 calories to maintain. I eat the foods that I like and eat mostly whole foods. That is simply because you get more satiety for fewer calories that way. I am never hungry. My weight has stayed at the recommended level of 185. P.S. - I threw out my bathroom scale decades ago. I simply monitor the notches in my belt to see how I am doing. The only time I get weighed is when I go for my physical.
Dr Fung is perhaps the only one who is trying his level best to educate people about the anatomy of our body and its genetic structure in order to survive cancer and other life threatening disease s. Lucky to have him in this part of the century and times . Thanks for sharing his expertise. Much respect ⚘
dr jason fung contributed a lot in my journey to weight loss. my mom died bec of diabetes, she went to dialysis sessions 3x a week for 5 yrs until she look literally like dead tree or mummified. i have an opportunity to take care of her months before she dies, i realized i dont want to undergo the same situation, so ive changed my eating habits, exercise gradually until im used to it, and disciplined myself to take atleast 15,000 steps a day by simply walking. it also helps me to manage my depression after a break up and losing my mom within the same month. now, im 53 kg from being 70kg. i removed rice and sugar at all, imagine how i struggle being an asian not having rice at all. i feel lighter, rarely sick and boost my confidence. im also not anxious that i will have diabetes or cancer because im consistently doing an IF. thank you dr fung, your videos make me commited to stay strong to be fit!
@@Qube14416 I just saw this. I have PCOS. I can’t eat dairy because of the hormones. The only dairy I eat is grass fed butter, and I eat cheese once in a blue moon every couple months. You can eat keto without dairy. The issue is most people don’t know how to eat without dairy.
So, intermittent fasting and keto with no diary, I may be wrong but isn’t basically Paleo? Please correct me if I’m wrong. Just trying to figure this out. Thanks
While intermittent fasting is all the rage now, it should be noted that the term "fasting" was considered taboo just several years ago within the mainstream health and fitness space. Those who practiced fasting were considered on the lunatic fringe of the health and fitness industry. Many of those in the diet and fitness arena characterized any eating plan that required you to go for an extended period of time without food as akin to an eating disorder. Dr. Jason Fung should be credited with popularizing this dietary intervention many years before it became en vogue. He was the one that, more than 6 years ago, cogently dispelled so many of the myths surrounding fasting, well before everyone else jumped on the fasting bandwagon.
I started fasting in the 70's and even then people would say you don't fast to lose weight. Thank God for Dr Fung and UA-cam.🤠I have shed a lot of fat since November of 2015. Mostly one meal a day helped me take my weight from 314 lbs to 225 lbs in April of 2020.
@@omadoutlaw4868 Congratulations! That is a tremendous accomplishment! I lost 105 lbs. I lost the first 65 lbs just losing a low carb diet eating a regular meal frequency. Then I was stuck on a plateau for nearly 9 months, and it was only after listening to the convincing case that Dr. Fung made regarding fasting, and his ability to disabuse me of any of my concerns regarding fasting, that I adopted fasting as a means to lose the remaining 40 lbs. I also credit Dr. Fung's knowledge to my weight loss success.
Actually there are STILL ppl who think it’s dangerous. I spent 9 insane months research fasting (I became a huge fan of Dr. Fung) and when I finally worked my wait up to a 21-day fast, my co-workers freaked out (my boss literally told me not to do it or I would die🤨), my friends and family were skeptical, but no one was interested in the RESEARCH. They made up their minds and not article or book or interview would change their mind
@@galaxylucia1898 I am impressed! The longest I have ever fasted for was 5 days. Most of the time I do OMAD, in addition to one 48 hour fast every week. The problem is, despite the mountains of evidence that fasting is not deleterious, people have been so conditioned to believe that they have to eat every 4 hours or they will waste away. This myth has been repeated often enough over decades that most people have hard time shifting their thinking on it.
Good thing is fasting has been practiced in India since ages without it being a stigma. But, thanks Dr. Berg and Jason Fung, people now know the scientifically proven benefits that were known to our ancestors long time ago.
I’ve been following dr Fung for a couple years now. His videos and books changed my understanding of food. Nice to see him here on your show. He speaks clearly and simply. It’s nice to see someone that really cares and wants to help people.
How I’ve been waiting for this! His book “The Complete Guide to Fasting” and “the Obesity Code” are great reads. He’s not trying to sell you anything, like other diet gurus. If anything, you save money by fasting, and don’t have to worry about portion control because after a while, your body finally relearns what it is to be satisfied, and you just stop then. It’s actually sustainable for the rest of your life.
Idk why people get stressed out about counting calories. You just write it down in a calorie app like my fitness pal or something. You don't need to weigh everything. Just eye it. And at least after some time, even if you stop counting, you'll have an idea about how much each food is in calories. Unless you have an idea about how much you're eating when it comes to calories, you could be over eating or possibly undereating which decreases your metabolism or you end up losing muscle instead of fat.
@@addy1285 as mentioned, "eyeing it" is about as close to useless as could be People do not know how to estimate and will also lie to themselves without knowing it. What is the point of measuring calories if you're not actually measuring anything at all?
@Garden of the North I do measure mine. But for people who can't ever think of counting calories for a life time, it's better to measure it the first weeks or so, then eye it after that. By that point, you'll realize how many extra calories you have been underestimating. You'll learn where you tend to over consume your calories. Maybe it's the extra olive oil or you eat way too much nuts because you're 'clean eating' and you might think that equals weightloss. Eyeing it isn't gonna be accurate but if you've been observing and measuring how many calories your regular foods are, it gives you an idea to portion your food properly.

I don't count calories ( I find it daunting ) nor carb cut. I am primarily plant based, with seafood (2-3) times, sparingly throughout the week. I workout 5 days a week. I do intermittent fasting 16/8. I create a schedule to eat one solid meal, a green smoothie, and a snack within the eight hour window. Naturally, the effort to eat more plants and seafood has eroded a lot of processed carbs from my diet, but I don't think about getting rid of carbs.
I love how honest the Dr was with his background. He never set it up to look like Tom’s. Not sure if those hangers are there for some reason💀 But I love his background and how honest and plain it is 🫶

Right now I'm working out for an hour a day and eating at a 500 calorie a day defecit and I am not loosing weight because I'm injecting insulin. I've known all kinds of people with endocrine disease who cannot loose weight with CICO. THANK YOU FOR SAYING IT.
You did not gain fat on 700 calories. There is no study on earth that would ever support that claim. No human on earth has been recorded gaining weight on 700 calories. Notice how its only people from the first world with inaccurate tracking and the ability to binge that are immune to starvation? What MIGHT have happened is: Your tracking was completely off (Most likely) You actually ate low calories and temporarily gained water weight from the cortisol levels(not fat). (Very likely)

@@scottspaulding7965 Most carbs are healthy, including bananas (high carb). You can’t equate donuts to carbs or bacon to fats. Both carbs and fats has healthy options.
Came here for the fasting talk, stayed for the cancer paradigm. I find it really interesting and fascinating. I have never studied Biology before, and yet the explanation given by Dr. Fung makes it so easy to understand, at least at a high level. I feel so blessed for knowing there are brains like Dr. Fung in the world. Back to my 4-days fasting.
I feel like counting calories is really difficult to maintain but I reckon doing it for a month or so can give you an idea of how much your eating and what you need to change

I got diagnosed with diabetes type 1 two years ago. Before that I was eating bread and rice everyday. Now on most days I don't hardly any carbs. Occasionally I will have a beer or a sandwich. My doctors are happy with the my blood sugar levels despite a low insulin dose. I feel great. I actually have more energy now than before, because carbs can really make you tired. -> Life is not over, you just have to do some adjustments. Get an CGM (Dexcom of Freestyle libre), that will keep you motivated to stay disciplined.
@Semper Paratus, it can be so overwhelming when getting the diagnosis of diabetes. I personally felt a range of emotions such as guilt, fear, shame, and anger among others. Having a traditional nursing school education did not prepare me for the journey I have embarked on to get to the root of my diagnosis, and what I can do about it. I just want to share with you some sources I found helpful in educating myself , that your wife might find helpful too, that share some of the same approach that Jason Fung does, for the most part. Dr. Ken Berry, a family medicine doctor out of Tennessee has a channel on UA-cam where he live streams every Monday with his wife who is an RN, answering questions from the comments. He backs up everything he believes by providing the links from the peer reviewed studies and scientific sources he draws his knowledge from. Dr. Rob Cywes (pronounced sigh-vess), is a world renowned surgeon and has multiple medical degrees in various areas of medicine. He is a character! But his way of explaining the mechanisms of how and why our bodies do what they do is incredibly accessible for people who don’t have a background in anatomy or physiology. He is entertaining and very informative! Of course they don’t all agree on every thing, but generally speaking, they all agree on the most important science, and the latest findings. I wish you and your wife well. I hope you find these references helpful on your health journey.
It seems to me, the common denominator throughout all my research is the ‘sugar’ part of carbs. Modern food is pumped full of sugar cause it makes it addictive and makes us want it more. Even bread, has sugar in it! It is very difficult to buy food that doesn’t have sugar in it which is why I cook everything from scratch. These jars of Bolognese sauce with sugar added in the ingredients is appalling. The food industry has a lot to answer for. Thank you for sharing this truth! 🤩
I have autoimmune disease and allergies. The best I ever felt was on carnivore. Decades of digestive disease symptoms gone. Stress and grief made me fall off that wagon but I'm working my way back to it. Dr. Fung explains things in such an amazingly intuitive way.
Excellent interview. Dr. Fung really explains this well, and when you listen to everything you start to piece together how it all works together: Inflamation and long term damage (such as diabetes) cause cancer. Eating foods that are low in processed carbs and sugar decrease insulin and inflamation, which means less opportunity for diabetes, vascular diseses, and cancer. Give him a Nobel Prize!
Counting calories 100% works. I dropped from 250 to 190. I now maintain around 205 and play soccer and lift and feel 10 years younger. Eat filling food that isn’t calorically dense. High protein high veggie.
See? So it wasn't only calorie counting that made you slimmer, you changed your dietary habits and lost weight because you ate healthier, with filling veggies and stuff like that. If you were to eat junk food, at a calorie deficit you might not be able to lose weight, thats how i take it I guess.
@@zatty232 I could certainly lose fat eating junk food in a calorie deficit. I would just be hungry a lot, bec the volume of food I could eat would be less. Eating food that isn't calorically dense just makes eating in a deficit easier bec when done "right" (which can be different for everyone) you can remain in a deficit without ever being uncomfortably hungry .
@@TomClancyBingBong actually, i looked into calorie counting a bit today, and i find that the measurements tend to be all over the place, i would say to just ditch calorie counting, as its the companies that make the food, are misleading you most of the time, that makes it hard to just count calories. the best way to lose weight, in my opinion is just eating, dense, but low calorie foods (and if you search for those foods, youll probably find some healthy meals right off the bat), makes it so youre comfortably at a calorie deificit, but feeling full to the brim for the whole day. weight loss doesnt need you to be hungry right, Hope this comment better says what i mean :D edit: ah and, answering your comment, yeah i think you could lose weight on junk food, but youd have to eat very little, since its so processed and high in calories. it wouldnt be very nice to live on such an unpleasant diet, feeling dissatisfied with the food all the time, because youd be always hungry. :D

I figured this out years ago. Glad to see it's finally starting to catch on. Lean protein-High insulin High fat Content Protein-lower insulin (still spikes but not as much though) Most carbs spike insulin, very few dont. Best carb sources i know of are most grean leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes. Fat doesnt spike insulin hardly at all. This is why keto is so effective at fat loss. It's just hard to come off keto without gaining weight back plus some. You're body becomes super sensitve to carbs and insulin when your body has grown accustomed to eating zero daily. Dont let people confuse you, TRUE keto is ZERO carbs. Anything else is a different diet entirely.
Dr. Fung has changed my understanding of nutrition and weight loss. As a result, all the diet myths I believed for decades are gone. I can make informed decisions about nutrition now. Dr. Fung is providing a life changing Public Health Service.
Basically what I’m understand from his argument is that when you go into a calorie deficit, your BMR will eventually adjust and what was once a calorie deficit then becomes your maintenance calories. This is 100% true but plays no role in disproving the laws of thermodynamics. There is only one way to lose weight which is being in a calorie deficit. This means that you are expending more calories than you consume. So, when your BMR adjusts to a lower maintenance you simply have to either burn more calories through exercise or eat less calories so that you remain in a calorie deficit and continue to lose weight.
My girlfriend is at a calorie deficit but hit a plateau. She already eats a lot less with nutrient heavy foods with a balanced diet. Should she eat even less or should she eat a little bit more and exercise (burn calories) more to compensate?
If she has been cutting food out as her main way to stay in a deficit, I would suggest doing more cardio. A good way to burn a lot of calories without too much effort is to walk uphill or walk on a treadmill at an incline. Another thing to consider is the kinds of foods she is eating. A good strategy can be to replace traditional foods with their lower calorie alternatives. Doing this with all the ingredients used when cooking will allow her to eat more food for less calories. Another thing to consider is how much protein she’s eating. If she starts eating more protein with meals they’ll fill her up more and allow her to eat less without even realizing it. But to answer your question, if her calories are already super low she should implement cardio so she can still get enough micronutrients from food.
@@Codycjackson better than forcing yourself to continue to adjust to a criminally low basal metabolic rate and having your muscles waste away as your body continues to push towards having to spend fewer calories on your metabolic processes, it's better to do what Dr Fung says, and have a low carb/low glycemic index/low insulin resistance diet so that your low insulin levels allow your body to take out energy from your body fat and then your bmr doesn't get lower, you have more energy, and you get slimmer. The thermodynamic model of weight loss is is absolute failure for human beings, we are not cars, when you put less fuel in a car it doesn't increase the mileage, what happens is that the car gives the same mileage, just runs for a smaller distance than before. Humans on the other hand, given less energy, will reduce their metabolic rate by up to 50%, imagine giving your car less and less fuel until it runs twice as long on the same amount of fuel? That's absolutely insane and that's why you cannot use thermodynamic model of weight loss on human beings, the parameters are switching, I would also like to mention that the magical car which would give you more mileage per unit fuel would also run a low slower, to the point that when it gives you double the mileage, the top speed and torque would also reduce by a proportional amount. Asking people to exercise more when their body literally resists spending calories is very cruel and inhumane. The only true way to lose weight long term is getting on a diet that enables low insulin production. You can do that with intermittent fasting, or any other method you would like.
@@Chad.Commenter no matter if you’re on a diet with low insulin or not you can’t lose weight if you aren’t in a calorie deficit. If being on a diet that lowers your insulin can help you maintain a deficit then great! However, it doesn’t matter that you’re eating this perfect diet model that lowers your insulin if you’re consuming more calories than you put out on that diet. The body will continue to put on body fat if it has excess calories. The laws of thermodynamics aren’t a diet model, they are scientific facts. Also, I agree that it is difficult to exercise while you’re depleted and in a calorie deficit but nobody said fat loss was easy lol.
I did a 5 day fast while supplementing with bullion cubes and potassium salt (the "no salt" replacement salt) plus a magnesium supplement, and day 4 and 5 were an absolute trip. The first 2-3 days sucked, but by day 4 I had more energy than I've had in years, my mind was totally clear, and I was not hungry in the slightest. Unfortunately, despite my positive experience, I've found it extremely difficult to start another 5 day fast. It's like a mental block almost forces me to seek out food before I make it over that hump again.
Every fast is different. I have seen that over and over. Some fasts seem like you are pulling teeth. It's best to abandon a fast if you feel stress. Then try again. Another thing, rather approach a fast with an open end? Don't say, I'm going to do 5 days and then feel frustrated when you can't. Every fast is a good fast, be it 18, 24 or 48 hrs. Try to think of falling in love with fasting, and this is easier to do if there is a spiritual element to it as well? Wish you all the best. Just remember if there is A clear goal and reason to fast, the likelihood is that it will be more bearable and maybe even enjoyable.
Start smaller and build up. Its funny that whenever we do extreme things our bodies and minds have a strong aversion to ever doing that again.even though to us it feels like it 'worked' , our mind/ body will not comply. I found that with low carb weight loss, could never do it again and with alternate day fasting , I have found my way back. Its less extreme.
Look into a practice called ‘priming’ in which you eat 4-5 meals a day of protein and high fat after a few days it will be very easy to naturally fast. Search Raymond Nazon

Whilst you don't do anything, all that food is stressing your body hence why you would sleep more on a belly full than empty. People should follow a golden rule of not eating after sunset, if nothing else then this alone will be life changing for them.
I bought Dr. Jason Fung's Book while working in the Capital city of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to understand the fasting process during Ramadan while I was working there in 2019. I have done the intermitent fasting, but I am willing to do the 15 days water only fasting. Based on his research the great benefits of fasting for the health seem worth it besides the weight loss. I am planning to start tomorrow until April 17th (Easter Sunday and end of the Holy Week) and get back to this page to share the results!
I just came off a 50 day water fast. I've been doing extended fasting for 21 years. Trust me, the first 3 days are still challenging for me. But once I get through that third day I do not be wanting to eat and sometimes I don't be wanting to drink water but I have to force myself to drink my water. Extended fasting is possible and easy. 👍
I posted correctly, 50 days and trust me it was very healthy. My blood pressure return to normal, I lost about 50 pounds, I have increased energy, I look younger, and the benefits list goes on and on. Keep in mind I've been fasting for over 20: years so I know how to do it successfully.
Ive tried different diets for years to lose weight. From low carb to keto. But the only diet works for me is a balance diet. This is the most sustainable tho. Consistensy and discipline is the key. Dr. Fung was on point about fixing your hormones first.
Yes! Doctor Fung may not have come up with all these processes but he’s been able to motive people by explaining in simple terms how this all works and the consequences of today’s foods.
I lost weight both by reducing my calorie intake AND by increasing it. I did this on two separate occasions as an experiment. When reducing calories I also watched my carb intake and reduced fat intake. When I lost weight by increasing calories I totally removed carbs but radically increased fat intake. My daily calorie intake when reducing calories was 2600 a day. When eating LCHF (low carb high fat) I just let the daily calorie intake go trough the roof, so I didn't count but a loose guesstimate would be at least 6500. On both diets I removed sugar and alcohole completely. So, both approaches reduced my bodyweight. That's my point. I finally decided on going for a calorie reduction as that allows me to balance carbs, fats, protein. It's just more feasible to me.

The blood sugar level on LCHF however was dead stable trough the whole periode of 9 months. Quite amazing. Must be really good for people with diabetes.
Great info! Fascinating! I also had the tub of licorice back in the 90's, thinking it was zero fat. Fortunately I was young during that time so I stayed slender, but now decades later having gained some weight, doing Keto is helping me tremendously. Now that I understand the insulin effects, I can properly and effectively manage my body weight.

Do u count calories at all on Keto? I am so confused. So many say that without counting calories u can't lose weight no matter what. But Dr. Fung says u don't need to count calories to lose weight. .
@@esmirahuric6221 eating the right foods and avoiding the carbs and sugar should eventually change your hunger experience. With intermittent fasting and all of your eating in a window of only 4 or 6 hours, you should be feeling quite full when done correctly. Counting calories shouldn't be needed. Hope this helps.
I fast 16 hours I normally stop eating at 6pm and keep my calorie intake low (500 per day) I lost so much weight doing this I went from over 300 town to 160. Mainly baked chicken and vegetables. I don’t starve myself and I snack on cucumbers and carrots when I need to

I want to make a bet with this doctor: we count the calories he eats and maintain that at something like 500 below his calorie expenditure per day. We measure his weight now and 4 weeks later. He can stop exercising and do whatever he likes. If he is right he won't lose weight (because calorie counting doesn't work) and if he is wrong he will lose the weight.
Seriously why are the doctors that don't understand the basics of physics and conservation of energy? If the body uses x amount of energy per day and consumes less, fat will be burned to produce that difference in energy. That is the bottom line, no medical study will ever refute it as this fact is much higher on the totem pole than all of medicine and biology. The body can't adjust this away because human retain a steady temperature of 37c and also have to keep your heart pumping etc., so there is not a huge amount the body can do to adjust to minimize expenditure. Also, there are countless studies that show significant reductions in weight for various types of fasting/diets so I don't know what is he talking about denying they exist?? The actual problem is keeping the weight off because if you lose the weight too fast without exercising your metabolism will/might adjust to a lower plateau and your hormones will try to get you back to your starting weight (by having you feel hungry until fat storage is restored), in some cases even years after the diet.
I lost over 8kg myself in 4 months by counting calories initially: I made sure I left out the types of foods with a lot of calories like all sweetened drinks, chips etc. crap and started walking to burn something like 500 calories extra per day compared to before. 700 calorie deficit, is about 100g in body fat and that is what I observed in real-world results also. So far the weight isn't coming back, but even if it does, no doctor can tell me counting calories and having a deficit won't work because it's obvious that it does and I have personally verified it also.
If you really want to do your audience a good service Tom, bring on someone like Layne Norton to dismantle 90% of the so-called information Dr. Fung is telling you. It’s really irresponsible of you Tom to have only one point of view and a dangerous point of view at that, on your show when it comes to something as important as losing weight and health. You should either have someone else on the show at the time so they can have an actual debate or follow this show up by having someone that actually has scientific knowledge in the weight-loss Industry Like Layne Norton.

This was really technical, but what I got from this was:

@@mr5608 In my eyes, intermittent fasting is only for health benefits, just like keto, you will see weight loss results but they won't be long term. there are no miracle diets, every diet has pros and cons. You just have to stay conscious of what you eat if you want to lose weight - eat healthier (easier said than done right ;))

@@Phoenix-rw3nh In a year, I'm down 60 pounds, 60 more to go. Started with intermittent. 2 meals a day, 6-8 hour window, trying not to snack between. The meals need to have good carbs (no/low sugars, breads etc). Now what is really interesting is I did a combo of just eating every other day (feast/fast). Lost 6 pounds in two weeks as I wanted to just be done with the loss part and get to maintenance. Then I tried it again June 1 but instead of doing good carbs on the alt days my wife and daughter cooked a lot of sweets (cookies, cup cakes, bread). I also ordered a pizza. I also didn't do the two meal on the feast days, sometimes eating dinner. Even though I was only slightly calorie positive on my feast days, I gained weight. Really annoying because I didn't eat at all for 30+ hours every other fast day. So I'm back to every other day, then sticking with healthy 6-8 hour eating on feast days. Healthy = a protein, veggies, fruit, yogurt, etc. Again losing very quickly. I'm also walking. 3-6 miles a day with a good audio book on my iphone. Basically, high insulin foods seem to screw my goals. I hope that helps. It is a process for sure. My current challenge is that I can't go back to those bad foods even if disciplined with fasting. I'm considering trying longer than 36 hour fasts but haven't yet.

I did intermittent fasting and a clean carb diet for 3 months and was dismayed that I only lost 2 lbs. My energy level never improved. I discovered, through no help from medical testing that I was iodine deficient. I started taking a kelp supplement and the weight started falling off me within a couple of weeks even without fasting. It's important for doctors to look at the thyroid gland and deficiencies in people with weightloss resistance. Not just insulin.

I have progressed from 16:8 to 20:4. The changes are crazy. I was becoming insulin resistant. I had put on 3 stone in 1 year. I totally lost control of my health and body. My dad passed away due to a heart attack triggered by type 2 diabetes. Getting diabetes has always been my fear. Finding Dr Jason has saved me. The weight is coming off gradually. He is indeed He must be an "earth-Angel" He helped me to find the perfect solution to heal my body through intermittent fasting. Instead of continuing the vicious circle with insulin, I find that intermittent fasting is helping a lot. I finally see normal blood sugar values now and then, that I haven't seen for years. I am only on my 2nd week , and I find the most difficult thing is to know how much insulin I have to take in the evening, so the sugar doesn't go too low. I do intend to make intermittent fasting part of my life style. If I don't change my life style, the diabetes is going to kill me slowly, and that doesn't have to happen if you do intermittent fasting, because IM will help your body to self heal itself.
Dr. Jason Fung was really one of the earliest leading medical practitioners that rolled this out. I think well over a decade ago he was already trying this in his clinical practice when there was nary a whisper of keto or fasting. I have been tracking the work done in this field since the earliest data came out. it's really quite remarkable. I wish he gets more acknowledge as an early pioneer - he's not advertising himself but really in the clinic helping his patients. Kudos Dr. Fung!

Upton Sinclairs book on the health benefits of fasting came out in 1914 I believe, Paul C Bragg wrote a book on fasting and got it published in 1974, Angus Barbieri's fast happened in 1965, which was one of the most meticulous studies done on fasting even to this day, and Atkins has been promoting such things since the 70s, mostly taking off in the 90s. There is a lot of very old data which is mostly cited by doctors like Fung, it's only just finally started going mainstream for about a decade or two.
Dr Fung is EXCELLENT. His reasoning is so crystal clear. We should all be cutting out a meal or two to instigate a period of intermittent fasting every day. We run on hormones!
In the medical field for people requiring tube feeding, the practice is usually to infuse it slowly 24hrs/day to avoid dumping a lot all at once 3 times/ day. Over my 40-plus years as a nurse, I've questioned dieticians on several occasions about this continuous infusion & not giving the body a rest from the digestive process. I was told it's done to assure enough calories are being given.
I have also noted that people on long term tube feedings always gained weight. Always. Even if they had been at normal weight range throughout their lives before the illness.
This interview finally explains the weight gain! It's not about calories, it's about the constant stimulation for the body to release insulin. THANK YOU! I always knew there was SOMETHING going on we didn't understand.
You can have as much insulin you like but if you're not eating excess calories you won't gain a gram of weight. My mother was tube fed her last few years and she certainly didn't gain any weight because of it, so there goes that nonsense also.

Saying that 1 person you know didn't respond the same doesn't invalidate the medical findings. That's like saying you know someone who smoked their whole adult life & lived to be 90 cancer free. That doesn't mean smoking doesn't cause cancer.

@@saratonnan He didn't name the study, but sure if you decrease your calories only very little, increase insulin and stop moving completely you might gain weight: that doesn't mean calorie counting doesn't work, it means the people gaining weight were not in a deficit and if they thought they were, they are bad at counting calories. If your base-rate is 1700 for a day you do nothing but sleep and you restrict your calories to that level per day, you will surely lose weight on a normal day with movements even if your body tries to adjust and slow down your metabolic rate by something like 10%.

As far as habits it would be to do some kind of fasting lifestyle: either 2 meals a day no snacks, one meal a day no snacks it all depends on which one fits you better. For diet: keep your carbs low, avoid vegetable oils and food that comes in a box with ingredients you have never heard of or can't spell.
If you have high blood pressure or diabetes do not start fasting without medical supervision. Dr Fung and others have programs to help with this.
I did 2 meal a day and low carb and lost 30 lbs, reversed my early diabetes and most importantly my suicidal depression, anxiety and anger issues completely disappeared. Dr Fung was the man who started me on this new life.

My meals have changed over the past two years as I have learned more facts about the huge differences between what we have been told is "healthy" food and was the facts actually are.
One thing to know is that I can eat the same meal day after day and enjoy it, I do not require "variety" (which I believe is an artificial concept ingrained in us by the food industry, restaurant biz, etc since back in day no human had access to the variety of different foods from all over the world and today's manufactured food is basically the same 3 ingredients: grains, sugar, seed oils they just fool us by making the "food" and package look different).
Having said that for lunch I will have about 3/4 lbs of some meat, like lamb shoulder chop, beef burger meat, ribeye, lamb burger meat. Along with that I have some cheese, real pork rinds. On occasion I enjoy some steamed veggies limited to cauliflower, asparagus, brussel sprouts. Then for dinner I will have 2-3 strips of bacon and 3-4 eggs, some avocado in season, some olives , more cheese although a lot of times I am stuffed before I get to the cheese...I eat beef liver about once a week, I mix 1lb of beef burger with 1lb of liver that I chop into small bits and that lasts me 2-3 meals, sometimes I do some eggs with the leftover meat, For me the more animal products I eat and less veggies the better I feel up to a point, I find that just a bit of veg on a regular basis works best. I also have wild caught sardines on a regular basis. Oysters when I can get them fresh also.

🤠Most of the people who are are critical of Dr Fung have never been really overweight for a long period of time. I started at 314 pounds in November of 2015 and got down to 225.6 pounds in April of 2020.
I lost close to 10kg in 3.5 months by counting calories and exercising more, so I would say the doctor is talking bollocks.
@@globeagentronburgundy9747 I lost 30 lb in 90 days by doing what Fung and others teach. I’m 6’ and went from 220 to 190. I have a bad back so I can’t risk it by exercising. I was completely sedentary. I have metastatic cancer and that’s why I dropped the carbs and extended my fast. But I ate as much as I wanted during the eating window. Increased fat intake during the fasting period by adding either butter or MCT oil to my coffee, or snacking if I had to on high fat foods like olives and approved nuts.
My wife tried increasing her exercise and counting calories and she just gained weight, exactly like he explains. She switched to low carb high fat with intermediate fasting and dropped about 30 lbs in 90 days.

I have reversed my insulin resistence in 3 months by fasting (16:8, 18:6 depending on a day) and eating low carb (LCHF). My weight just flew away (15-20 kg), which was unthinkable to me before, since I used to spend months fighting to lose a kilo.

Fantastic! Yes, weight gain is often related to trauma and feeling safe in the world. When I was working in health education I learned that when a little kid suddenly gains weight, it can be that she is being sexually abused. Jon Gabriel (The Gabriel Method) gives meditations with his book/weight loss program. Same for my mom, she lost weight in her 60s by working with a spiritual body worker healer who removed all kinds of “unseen” baggage. Mum is 82 and slim and physically healthy now, swims and goes to the gym. Thank you for sharing your story.

I’m a nurse and I am just blown away, this is the best anatomy and physiology lesson I have ever heard.. Dr Fung made a complete left hand turn from fasting to Cancer...and started a lecture regarding cancer and why we can’t find a cure. I am so astounded about the how and why we get cancer, it remains elusive. and for the most part without cure, .. Life ... even after 4 billion years has proven ... that we are just now, beginning to scratch the surface, when it comes to any kind of understanding.. as to where we come from and how we have evolved to this point...
My wife and I found Dr Fung about 2 1/2 years ago right after she found lecture videos by Thomas Seyfried. Seyfried had furthered the work of Warburg and discovered how to reverse cancer in lab rats using the ketogenic diet and a drug that inhibits glutamine. But he can’t get funding to further his research. If you like this, you’ll find Dr Seyfried’s lectures equally as enlightening and question why his findings aren’t front page news.
Sloan Kettering and MD Anderson are now experimenting with employing the ketogenic diet with traditional cancer treatments, but you’ve got to dig to learn this stuff.
At the time, most of Fung’s videos were more related to insulin, diabetes and weight loss. It’s interesting to see he is now addressing cancer.

I was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer 6 years ago this month at age 48. My dad was diagnosed with both prostate cancer and a rare, aggressive form of leukemia a month later (he got both results the same day).
His leukemia followed on the heels of a bad kidney infection. He hadn’t been sick in 45 years until that kidney infection. I now believe his leukemia was occupation related since I learned that leukemia is one of the side effects of myodisplastic bone marrow. He worked with high voltage electricity for 37 years and was trained to work 500K volt lines hot the past 15 years. I now believe the high voltage affected his bone marrow and his immune system kept the cancer at bay until the kidney infection compromised his immune system.
I believe my prostate cancer MAY be inherited but I spent my 30s and 40s under a great deal higher stress level than my father, his brother uncle and maternal grandfather ever dealt with (except a brief time in my father’s late 40s when he lost his family’s farm). I know my testosterone level dipped in my late 30s and while they believe prostate cancer feeds on testosterone, studies indicate high testosterone levels are actually protective. My cancer is much more aggressive than theirs.
My uncle had an entire career of shift work. And we know that disrupting the circadian rhythm compromises the immune system.
So we’ve been learning all this latest research the past 3 years and can’t figure out why the medical community is so far behind. I would actually hand my oncologist copies of published research and he wouldn’t even look at it.
Can't & won't recognize the cure because they gotta keep the money coming in. We have the cure for cancer with a Whole Food Plant Based diet but there's no money in it for doctors, hospitals & big pharma!

I was an obese preteen and went on a calorie counting diet, which did work as I went from 160 to about 130. Unfortunately it also led to an eating disorder, namely bulimia which plagued me on and over for decades! I’m ketovore to carnivore (depending on my day or week) now and it works to keep me slim without worrying about calories as I just follow my hunger and satiety cues to the best of my ability. It’s also healed my migraines and chronic headaches

@@ItachiUchiha-oj3iw He's not suggesting you can. He's suggesting that the you eating 3000 calories a day of mostly fats and proteins and limiting sugar intake does not have the same basal metabolic rate as the you that eats 2000 calories a day of fat free yogurts and cheeses

I was fasting for a while after watching all these videos from Dr. Fung. I felt healthy, lost some weight. Then I kind of fell out of all the good habits after a few months. Rewatching this video just reminded me of how much of a difference it made when I fasted and how many benefits I just completely forgot fasting had. I don’t understand how it can be so easy to do all the wrong things, but it’s just as easy to do the right with the right info. I just need to rewatch this every so often. It’s all true and it works.

Dr. Dung has changed my life. I’ve lost 40 pounds in the last two months. My friends think I’m crazy eating one meal a day! I’ll never go back to the way I use to eat. I’m off my high blood pressure and cholesterol meds.

I am 53 and have battled obesity for 20 years . This method is showing results for me in my first week . I am off my insulin and metformin with my fasting glucose usually in the low 80mg range .

Intermittent fasting has, as a 52 year old man, changed my life. A regular exerciser I could never shift my belly fat. Intermittent fasting changed that within weeks.

@Saul Goodman there’s no possible way for you to know that without knowing the details of his fasting. And you are not accounting for how long he was in ketosis or activating autophagy. Theoretically , a person can eat one meal per day, consume a full days calories and still loss weight. Im not sure how versed you are with Dr. Fund’s research, but he clearly states the exact opposite of what your stating. That being said I disagree with your comment.
@Saul Goodman the entire first part of the video is dedicated to disproving you argument, you should listen to it. Better yet, read his book, “The Obesity Code” and you’ll understand that you’re incorrect. Countless studies have proven to that caloric reduction diets fail 100% of the time, because 1. They are unsustainable and 2. Your body adapts to the reduction in calories. This is why we have an obesity and diabetes epidemic, we spend decades telling people that fat makes you fat, you just have eat less and move more. Good chat, thanks. Take care.
@Saul Goodman sorry I didn’t see the last sentence of your post. Fasting is not a new trend! People have been fasting since biblical times. Fasting is a part of every major religion. Dr. Fung isn’t promoting anything other than knowledge, he’s not selling a product or program so what purpose does is serve to “jump on a trend”?
@Saul Goodman I disagree. While true the foods you named are the worst possible foods imaginable, it is the effect on the body that is doing the damage, not the calories. The constant high insulin loads and constant high glucose levels brought on by the sugar, carbohydrates, chemicals, manmade oils, bleached flour, etc are preventing the proper function of the body and causing excessive fat storage. Regardless if it’s 3000 calories of garbage or 2000 calories of garbage, you’re not going to lose weight. The body has two modes: feeding or fasting, that’s it. If you’re constantly feeding you’re never allowing your insulin and glucose levels to drop, therefore you will never access your stored fat. Dr Fung used a great analogy in the video, he said imagine your body is like a tanker truck, you have a huge tank of fuel behind you, but you can’t get it to the engine. This is because you’re constantly filling the main tank, instead of accessing the stored fuel. If you don’t allow your body to process your stored fat, you’re not going to lose weight. The only way to allow access to the fat stores is to stop eating and allow the body to process itself. This is called ketosis, your body is burning fat for fuel, instead of glucose. The added benefit of fasting for extended period is autpghagy, which is the
body’s natural process of cleaning up the junk and garbage you accumulate like damage cells, excess proteins, etc. You can gain some benefits from ketosis through exercise, and more through carbohydrate reduction. But neither requires calorie reduction. When I was eating the carnivore diet I was eating a pound of steak per day, during my one meal. That’s about 1500 calories and I still lost weight, I didn’t reduce my calories at all, I changed what and when i ate.

I love Dr. Jason Fung. He was the first doctor that I followed on youtube, listening to him helped me to loose the fat I gained from years of very stressful work by engaging in fasting. I had not heard of this cancer theory before, thanks for bringing it to my attention, Tom Bilyeu.
I learned of him through UA-camr Dr Eric Berg. They did a collab a few yrs ago. I believe Dr berg was the 1st who spoke on Keto/Carb/ intermittent fasting

Ive lost 47.2kg thus far since having my son at 105kg. During Ramadan i was 65.5 lost 5.5kg, then i combined that fasting with walking exercises and carnivore. In 6 days im down to 57.6 so lost 2.4kg under a week 😊 i am so hapoy about that, the scale is moving and im seeing positive physical changes to my body even abs which were buried under the fat for 29yrs! I will continue with that diet for a month, GW is 48kg for my short height of 4.10". Then transition to keto with 16-8 fast, exercise 3/4 times a week end of May. As a lifestyle change for life then on🙏🏼 its been a long, struggling WL journey, finally im getting closer to my GW everyday🎉

I read Obesity Code book and it made so much sense. We’ve all met that person who is over weight and swears they’re eating very little. Secretly we don’t believe them because we are so programmed to believe the calories in calories out model. Now maybe we can cut those people some slack.
They are just in denial, their own ignorant fantasy. Have they never stood in front of a mirror?
I agree. Thank you for saying that. They haven't received the right info. Some people still believe lower calories and lower fat will help them lose weight. Doctors, nutritionist, trainers, etc are still telling people this. Along with 6 small meals a day.

My newest favorite mantra is “not judging is kindness”. We judge people so harshly as evidence of our own beliefs. All I know is that 40 years ago I first heard about calories in versus calories out. I started counting my daily calories and kept it around 1500 calories a day until I reached my goal. These days I consume 2000 to 2200 calories to maintain. I eat the foods that I like and eat mostly whole foods. That is simply because you get more satiety for fewer calories that way. I am never hungry. My weight has stayed at the recommended level of 185.
P.S. - I threw out my bathroom scale decades ago. I simply monitor the notches in my belt to see how I am doing. The only time I get weighed is when I go for my physical.
Dr Fung is perhaps the only one who is trying his level best to educate people about the anatomy of our body and its genetic structure in order to survive cancer and other life threatening disease s. Lucky to have him in this part of the century and times . Thanks for sharing his expertise. Much respect ⚘

dr jason fung contributed a lot in my journey to weight loss. my mom died bec of diabetes, she went to dialysis sessions 3x a week for 5 yrs until she look literally like dead tree or mummified. i have an opportunity to take care of her months before she dies, i realized i dont want to undergo the same situation, so ive changed my eating habits, exercise gradually until im used to it, and disciplined myself to take atleast 15,000 steps a day by simply walking. it also helps me to manage my depression after a break up and losing my mom within the same month. now, im 53 kg from being 70kg. i removed rice and sugar at all, imagine how i struggle being an asian not having rice at all. i feel lighter, rarely sick and boost my confidence. im also not anxious that i will have diabetes or cancer because im consistently doing an IF. thank you dr fung, your videos make me commited to stay strong to be fit!

@@Qube14416 I just saw this. I have PCOS. I can’t eat dairy because of the hormones. The only dairy I eat is grass fed butter, and I eat cheese once in a blue moon every couple months.
You can eat keto without dairy. The issue is most people don’t know how to eat without dairy.

While intermittent fasting is all the rage now, it should be noted that the term "fasting" was considered taboo just several years ago within the mainstream health and fitness space. Those who practiced fasting were considered on the lunatic fringe of the health and fitness industry. Many of those in the diet and fitness arena characterized any eating plan that required you to go for an extended period of time without food as akin to an eating disorder. Dr. Jason Fung should be credited with popularizing this dietary intervention many years before it became en vogue. He was the one that, more than 6 years ago, cogently dispelled so many of the myths surrounding fasting, well before everyone else jumped on the fasting bandwagon.
I started fasting in the 70's and even then people would say you don't fast to lose weight. Thank God for Dr Fung and UA-cam.🤠I have shed a lot of fat since November of 2015. Mostly one meal a day helped me take my weight from 314 lbs to 225 lbs in April of 2020.
@@omadoutlaw4868 Congratulations! That is a tremendous accomplishment! I lost 105 lbs. I lost the first 65 lbs just losing a low carb diet eating a regular meal frequency. Then I was stuck on a plateau for nearly 9 months, and it was only after listening to the convincing case that Dr. Fung made regarding fasting, and his ability to disabuse me of any of my concerns regarding fasting, that I adopted fasting as a means to lose the remaining 40 lbs. I also credit Dr. Fung's knowledge to my weight loss success.
Actually there are STILL ppl who think it’s dangerous. I spent 9 insane months research fasting (I became a huge fan of Dr. Fung) and when I finally worked my wait up to a 21-day fast, my co-workers freaked out (my boss literally told me not to do it or I would die🤨), my friends and family were skeptical, but no one was interested in the RESEARCH. They made up their minds and not article or book or interview would change their mind
@@galaxylucia1898 I am impressed! The longest I have ever fasted for was 5 days. Most of the time I do OMAD, in addition to one 48 hour fast every week. The problem is, despite the mountains of evidence that fasting is not deleterious, people have been so conditioned to believe that they have to eat every 4 hours or they will waste away. This myth has been repeated often enough over decades that most people have hard time shifting their thinking on it.
Good thing is fasting has been practiced in India since ages without it being a stigma. But, thanks Dr. Berg and Jason Fung, people now know the scientifically proven benefits that were known to our ancestors long time ago.

How I’ve been waiting for this! His book “The Complete Guide to Fasting” and “the Obesity Code” are great reads. He’s not trying to sell you anything, like other diet gurus. If anything, you save money by fasting, and don’t have to worry about portion control because after a while, your body finally relearns what it is to be satisfied, and you just stop then. It’s actually sustainable for the rest of your life.

Fasting is less stressful than counting counting counting worry worry worry about each thing you eat.
Idk why people get stressed out about counting calories. You just write it down in a calorie app like my fitness pal or something. You don't need to weigh everything. Just eye it. And at least after some time, even if you stop counting, you'll have an idea about how much each food is in calories.
Unless you have an idea about how much you're eating when it comes to calories, you could be over eating or possibly undereating which decreases your metabolism or you end up losing muscle instead of fat.

People do not know how to estimate and will also lie to themselves without knowing it. What is the point of measuring calories if you're not actually measuring anything at all?
@Garden of the North I do measure mine. But for people who can't ever think of counting calories for a life time, it's better to measure it the first weeks or so, then eye it after that. By that point, you'll realize how many extra calories you have been underestimating. You'll learn where you tend to over consume your calories. Maybe it's the extra olive oil or you eat way too much nuts because you're 'clean eating' and you might think that equals weightloss. Eyeing it isn't gonna be accurate but if you've been observing and measuring how many calories your regular foods are, it gives you an idea to portion your food properly.
@@addy1285 eyeing it is literally useless, no one can look at a plate and guess that it has 170 grams off something on it accurately every single time. Professionals will get close but still be wrong.

I don't count calories ( I find it daunting ) nor carb cut. I am primarily plant based, with seafood (2-3) times, sparingly throughout the week. I workout 5 days a week. I do intermittent fasting 16/8. I create a schedule to eat one solid meal, a green smoothie, and a snack within the eight hour window. Naturally, the effort to eat more plants and seafood has eroded a lot of processed carbs from my diet, but I don't think about getting rid of carbs.
I love how honest the Dr was with his background. He never set it up to look like Tom’s. Not sure if those hangers are there for some reason💀 But I love his background and how honest and plain it is 🫶

Right now I'm working out for an hour a day and eating at a 500 calorie a day defecit and I am not loosing weight because I'm injecting insulin. I've known all kinds of people with endocrine disease who cannot loose weight with CICO. THANK YOU FOR SAYING IT.
You did not gain fat on 700 calories. There is no study on earth that would ever support that claim. No human on earth has been recorded gaining weight on 700 calories.
Notice how its only people from the first world with inaccurate tracking and the ability to binge that are immune to starvation?
What MIGHT have happened is:
Your tracking was completely off (Most likely)
You actually ate low calories and temporarily gained water weight from the cortisol levels(not fat). (Very likely)
She said gain weight, not gain fat. Maybe it's water. Everyone I know on insulin gains weight and it doesn't seem to matter what they eat.
Please follow Dr. Fungs advice; you will not regret it.

Came here for the fasting talk, stayed for the cancer paradigm. I find it really interesting and fascinating. I have never studied Biology before, and yet the explanation given by Dr. Fung makes it so easy to understand, at least at a high level.

I got diagnosed with diabetes type 1 two years ago. Before that I was eating bread and rice everyday. Now on most days I don't hardly any carbs. Occasionally I will have a beer or a sandwich. My doctors are happy with the my blood sugar levels despite a low insulin dose. I feel great. I actually have more energy now than before, because carbs can really make you tired. -> Life is not over, you just have to do some adjustments. Get an CGM (Dexcom of Freestyle libre), that will keep you motivated to stay disciplined.
@Semper Paratus, it can be so overwhelming when getting the diagnosis of diabetes. I personally felt a range of emotions such as guilt, fear, shame, and anger among others. Having a traditional nursing school education did not prepare me for the journey I have embarked on to get to the root of my diagnosis, and what I can do about it. I just want to share with you some sources I found helpful in educating myself , that your wife might find helpful too, that share some of the same approach that Jason Fung does, for the most part. Dr. Ken Berry, a family medicine doctor out of Tennessee has a channel on UA-cam where he live streams every Monday with his wife who is an RN, answering questions from the comments. He backs up everything he believes by providing the links from the peer reviewed studies and scientific sources he draws his knowledge from. Dr. Rob Cywes (pronounced sigh-vess), is a world renowned surgeon and has multiple medical degrees in various areas of medicine. He is a character! But his way of explaining the mechanisms of how and why our bodies do what they do is incredibly accessible for people who don’t have a background in anatomy or physiology. He is entertaining and very informative! Of course they don’t all agree on every thing, but generally speaking, they all agree on the most important science, and the latest findings. I wish you and your wife well. I hope you find these references helpful on your health journey.

It seems to me, the common denominator throughout all my research is the ‘sugar’ part of carbs. Modern food is pumped full of sugar cause it makes it addictive and makes us want it more. Even bread, has sugar in it! It is very difficult to buy food that doesn’t have sugar in it which is why I cook everything from scratch. These jars of Bolognese sauce with sugar added in the ingredients is appalling. The food industry has a lot to answer for. Thank you for sharing this truth! 🤩
I have autoimmune disease and allergies. The best I ever felt was on carnivore. Decades of digestive disease symptoms gone. Stress and grief made me fall off that wagon but I'm working my way back to it. Dr. Fung explains things in such an amazingly intuitive way.

Counting calories 100% works. I dropped from 250 to 190. I now maintain around 205 and play soccer and lift and feel 10 years younger. Eat filling food that isn’t calorically dense. High protein high veggie.
See? So it wasn't only calorie counting that made you slimmer, you changed your dietary habits and lost weight because you ate healthier, with filling veggies and stuff like that. If you were to eat junk food, at a calorie deficit you might not be able to lose weight, thats how i take it I guess.
@@zatty232 I could certainly lose fat eating junk food in a calorie deficit. I would just be hungry a lot, bec the volume of food I could eat would be less.
Eating food that isn't calorically dense just makes eating in a deficit easier bec when done "right" (which can be different for everyone) you can remain in a deficit without ever being uncomfortably hungry .
@@TomClancyBingBong actually, i looked into calorie counting a bit today, and i find that the measurements tend to be all over the place, i would say to just ditch calorie counting, as its the companies that make the food, are misleading you most of the time, that makes it hard to just count calories. the best way to lose weight, in my opinion is just eating, dense, but low calorie foods (and if you search for those foods, youll probably find some healthy meals right off the bat), makes it so youre comfortably at a calorie deificit, but feeling full to the brim for the whole day. weight loss doesnt need you to be hungry right, Hope this comment better says what i mean :D
edit: ah and, answering your comment, yeah i think you could lose weight on junk food, but youd have to eat very little, since its so processed and high in calories. it wouldnt be very nice to live on such an unpleasant diet, feeling dissatisfied with the food all the time, because youd be always hungry. :D

Most carbs spike insulin, very few dont. Best carb sources i know of are most grean leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes.
Fat doesnt spike insulin hardly at all.
This is why keto is so effective at fat loss. It's just hard to come off keto without gaining weight back plus some.
You're body becomes super sensitve to carbs and insulin when your body has grown accustomed to eating zero daily.
Dont let people confuse you, TRUE keto is ZERO carbs. Anything else is a different diet entirely.

Basically what I’m understand from his argument is that when you go into a calorie deficit, your BMR will eventually adjust and what was once a calorie deficit then becomes your maintenance calories. This is 100% true but plays no role in disproving the laws of thermodynamics. There is only one way to lose weight which is being in a calorie deficit. This means that you are expending more calories than you consume. So, when your BMR adjusts to a lower maintenance you simply have to either burn more calories through exercise or eat less calories so that you remain in a calorie deficit and continue to lose weight.
My girlfriend is at a calorie deficit but hit a plateau. She already eats a lot less with nutrient heavy foods with a balanced diet. Should she eat even less or should she eat a little bit more and exercise (burn calories) more to compensate?
If she has been cutting food out as her main way to stay in a deficit, I would suggest doing more cardio. A good way to burn a lot of calories without too much effort is to walk uphill or walk on a treadmill at an incline. Another thing to consider is the kinds of foods she is eating. A good strategy can be to replace traditional foods with their lower calorie alternatives. Doing this with all the ingredients used when cooking will allow her to eat more food for less calories. Another thing to consider is how much protein she’s eating. If she starts eating more protein with meals they’ll fill her up more and allow her to eat less without even realizing it. But to answer your question, if her calories are already super low she should implement cardio so she can still get enough micronutrients from food.
@@Codycjackson better than forcing yourself to continue to adjust to a criminally low basal metabolic rate and having your muscles waste away as your body continues to push towards having to spend fewer calories on your metabolic processes, it's better to do what Dr Fung says, and have a low carb/low glycemic index/low insulin resistance diet so that your low insulin levels allow your body to take out energy from your body fat and then your bmr doesn't get lower, you have more energy, and you get slimmer. The thermodynamic model of weight loss is is absolute failure for human beings, we are not cars, when you put less fuel in a car it doesn't increase the mileage, what happens is that the car gives the same mileage, just runs for a smaller distance than before. Humans on the other hand, given less energy, will reduce their metabolic rate by up to 50%, imagine giving your car less and less fuel until it runs twice as long on the same amount of fuel? That's absolutely insane and that's why you cannot use thermodynamic model of weight loss on human beings, the parameters are switching, I would also like to mention that the magical car which would give you more mileage per unit fuel would also run a low slower, to the point that when it gives you double the mileage, the top speed and torque would also reduce by a proportional amount. Asking people to exercise more when their body literally resists spending calories is very cruel and inhumane. The only true way to lose weight long term is getting on a diet that enables low insulin production. You can do that with intermittent fasting, or any other method you would like.
@@Chad.Commenter no matter if you’re on a diet with low insulin or not you can’t lose weight if you aren’t in a calorie deficit. If being on a diet that lowers your insulin can help you maintain a deficit then great! However, it doesn’t matter that you’re eating this perfect diet model that lowers your insulin if you’re consuming more calories than you put out on that diet. The body will continue to put on body fat if it has excess calories. The laws of thermodynamics aren’t a diet model, they are scientific facts. Also, I agree that it is difficult to exercise while you’re depleted and in a calorie deficit but nobody said fat loss was easy lol.

I did a 5 day fast while supplementing with bullion cubes and potassium salt (the "no salt" replacement salt) plus a magnesium supplement, and day 4 and 5 were an absolute trip. The first 2-3 days sucked, but by day 4 I had more energy than I've had in years, my mind was totally clear, and I was not hungry in the slightest.
Unfortunately, despite my positive experience, I've found it extremely difficult to start another 5 day fast. It's like a mental block almost forces me to seek out food before I make it over that hump again.
Every fast is different. I have seen that over and over. Some fasts seem like you are pulling teeth. It's best to abandon a fast if you feel stress. Then try again.
Another thing, rather approach a fast with an open end? Don't say, I'm going to do 5 days and then feel frustrated when you can't. Every fast is a good fast, be it 18, 24 or 48 hrs.
Try to think of falling in love with fasting, and this is easier to do if there is a spiritual element to it as well?

Start smaller and build up. Its funny that whenever we do extreme things our bodies and minds have a strong aversion to ever doing that again.even though to us it feels like it 'worked' , our mind/ body will not comply. I found that with low carb weight loss, could never do it again and with alternate day fasting , I have found my way back. Its less extreme.
Look into a practice called ‘priming’ in which you eat 4-5 meals a day of protein and high fat after a few days it will be very easy to naturally fast.

8+ hours. It is time when your body is recovering and "recharging". This is why teenagers sleep so much.
I don't need as much as I used to, and during a fast many people have insomnia and can only sleep a few hours at night, but don't drag the next day.
@@musicluvrlaurie6827 The more you will eat, the harder your body has to work to process that food. Whilst you don't do anything, all that food is stressing your body hence why you would sleep more on a belly full than empty. People should follow a golden rule of not eating after sunset, if nothing else then this alone will be life changing for them.

True my sister got cancer when she was stressed. Got stage 4 breast cancer at age 28 and she died when she was 29 a week before her 30th birthday
I bought Dr. Jason Fung's Book while working in the Capital city of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to understand the fasting process during Ramadan while I was working there in 2019. I have done the intermitent fasting, but I am willing to do the 15 days water only fasting. Based on his research the great benefits of fasting for the health seem worth it besides the weight loss. I am planning to start tomorrow until April 17th (Easter Sunday and end of the Holy Week) and get back to this page to share the results!

I just came off a 50 day water fast. I've been doing extended fasting for 21 years. Trust me, the first 3 days are still challenging for me. But once I get through that third day I do not be wanting to eat and sometimes I don't be wanting to drink water but I have to force myself to drink my water. Extended fasting is possible and easy. 👍

I posted correctly, 50 days and trust me it was very healthy. My blood pressure return to normal, I lost about 50 pounds, I have increased energy, I look younger, and the benefits list goes on and on. Keep in mind I've been fasting for over 20: years so I know how to do it successfully.

Ive tried different diets for years to lose weight. From low carb to keto. But the only diet works for me is a balance diet. This is the most sustainable tho.
Consistensy and discipline is the key. Dr. Fung was on point about fixing your hormones first.
Yes! Doctor Fung may not have come up with all these processes but he’s been able to motive people by explaining in simple terms how this all works and the consequences of today’s foods.

I lost weight both by reducing my calorie intake AND by increasing it. I did this on two separate occasions as an experiment. When reducing calories I also watched my carb intake and reduced fat intake. When I lost weight by increasing calories I totally removed carbs but radically increased fat intake. My daily calorie intake when reducing calories was 2600 a day. When eating LCHF (low carb high fat) I just let the daily calorie intake go trough the roof, so I didn't count but a loose guesstimate would be at least 6500. On both diets I removed sugar and alcohole completely. So, both approaches reduced my bodyweight. That's my point. I finally decided on going for a calorie reduction as that allows me to balance carbs, fats, protein. It's just more feasible to me.

@@LifeInTheSunshine As the latter part of my post indicates I went with the most feasible or sustainable if you like. I felt good on LCHF as well but got tired of fat and missed the carbs. The blood sugar level on LCHF however was dead stable trough the whole periode of 9 months. Quite amazing. Must be really good for people with diabetes.
Great info! Fascinating! I also had the tub of licorice back in the 90's, thinking it was zero fat. Fortunately I was young during that time so I stayed slender, but now decades later having gained some weight, doing Keto is helping me tremendously. Now that I understand the insulin effects, I can properly and effectively manage my body weight.

Do u count calories at all on Keto? I am so confused. So many say that without counting calories u can't lose weight no matter what. But Dr. Fung says u don't need to count calories to lose weight.

@@esmirahuric6221 eating the right foods and avoiding the carbs and sugar should eventually change your hunger experience. With intermittent fasting and all of your eating in a window of only 4 or 6 hours, you should be feeling quite full when done correctly. Counting calories shouldn't be needed. Hope this helps.
I fast 16 hours I normally stop eating at 6pm and keep my calorie intake low (500 per day) I lost so much weight doing this I went from over 300 town to 160. Mainly baked chicken and vegetables. I don’t starve myself and I snack on cucumbers and carrots when I need to
