Dr Fung not only had the insight to recognize the root cause of diabetic kidney disease, but the courage to speak out against the conventional wisdom, which was just about treating the symptoms. Top man.

Listening to Dr. Fung when I first learned I had diabetes was instrumental on me understanding that this was NOT a progressive and chronic disease. I listened to everything I could from him and have turned my life into something so much better. I reversed my diabetes through LCHF diet, intermittent fasting (some prolonged fasts as well), and exercise. I went from an A1C of 13.2 at the end of June 2022 to 5.5 in January of 2023. I also happened to lose 36kg (80lbs.) so I guess by following his guidance it has cost me to lose a full wardrobe of bigger size clothing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Dr. Fung! I would be in very bad shape and getting worse if I'd listen to my current GP.

Congratulations! Even most regular doctors don’t give the same advice that Dr. Fung does for solving the problem at the root cause. They just put us on medicine, mask our symptoms, and never explain the real causes of the problem. They are, therefore, gradually helping to kill us. This problem affects multi millions, if not billions, in the world. But only a select few know the truth. Where’s the media on this?

My father-in-law was a renowned family practice doctor in the 70s and 80s. He became so obsessed over reducing his heart attack risk through lowering his fat intake that he began to strive for a zero fat diet, following it for a number of years. He eventually developed Alzheimers and became completely dependent on a 'girlfriend' - who embezzled most of his life savings. A very sad story that has reverberated down through all of his descendents. And it is just one among many. This whole low-fat debacle has cost us dearly as a nation.

Exactly, Sheila. I saw an interview on Dr Anthony Chaffee's channel where this man at the assisted living homes he owned was helping the elderly with a change of diet...off of carbohydrates. The changes have been miraculous, including memory improvement and a few of the residents even getting to go back to their homes or with their families. Diet is so important. Everyone should take note of your post.

@@mslice09fasting is not starvation. It is true that some people should not fast (meaning that they are already severely malnourished and are at a very low bodyweight/fat-stores) but generally speaking, in our extremely overweight society, a properly done fast is almost like a fountain of youth (stimulating autophagy). You should look into what happens during a 48- and 72-hour fast...it is almost like a brain reset. Extremely beneficial and rejuvenating. 👌✌️

@D For now, ignore the LDL reading and work on lowering TRIG. by going low carb keto or zero carb carnivore. As it is TRIG is high because the body is overloaded with fat. There is nowhere for it to go. Switch diet to low or zero carb forces your body to start using body fat, reducing TRIG.

Ok, another testimonial about the positive effects of intermittent fasting/eating.
7 weeks ago ( after a mildly successful couple months with Noom, lost 10 pounds ), I came upon a video on fasting by Dr Fung. I watched the video, and I liked the video. I decided I was going to try intermittent fasting.
The day after my watching Dr Fung's video on fasting I skipped breakfast ( phew, what a relief, I've never been hungry in the mornings and ate in the mornings because I've heard my whole life it's the most important meal of the day ) and had 2 meals. 2 delicious nutritious meals - whole foods, animal meat, plants, veggies, nuts, water ( just started adding fermented foods.)
Since my first day of 2 meals a day, an avg of 17:7 fast/eat window - it's been 45 days.
    45 days ago - 212lbs , 5'10" male 43yrs old
    Today - 189.5lbs , I'm still 5'10", I'm still male, but 2 months older.
22.5 lbs of dropped water, and fat and whatever else - in 45 days ( 1 month and Half ) by eating 2 meals a day with virtually no snacking and only water and coffee!!!
I have high percentage dark cocoa chocolate 70% and higher with natural peanut butter sometimes when I'm hungry in between meals. I add sweetener to my coffee with heavy cream every day ( the sweetener is awful for me but I'm sugar addicted and thought to tread carefully here, and so I still have some sugar.) When I really feel I need it ( which is rare ) I'll have processed carbs like an occasional cookie, or slice(s) of bread. But much much much less than before.
I have hypothyroidism, and take a pill every morning.
I've done a couple 24hr fasts in my 45 days.
IVE LOST 22.5 POUNDS IN A MONTH AND A HALF. - after eating terribly, absolutely terribly for the last 2 years ( was going through personal trauma and ate for dopamine hits.)
A reversal this quick, by ......
    1. Skipping the most important meal of the day ( sarcasm ), 17:7 fast, eat window
    2. Consume less sugar and refined Carbs by approx 80/85%
    3. Eat delicious, real, whole foods ( not processed ) from the earth. Steaks, chicken, salmon, Brazilian nuts, rainbow of veggies, fermented foods. I take occasional fiber supplement , the only supplement I take called Inulin.
    4. Respecting the process. At first I indulged in more sugar and carbs. Of course I did. I had been my whole life 43 yrs. I'm a food junkie. So I reminded myself to be patient. When I stumbled, I would assure myself that till the next meal I would commit to staying clean. Patience.
    5. I have to include Marc Sisson. I read 2 meals a day before Obesity code - and Marc and his Co writter were the first to make me believe that I could do this. And I have. I did it.
There were some bumps in the road of course, but I stayed on track. Now, when I feel pressured to eat something I don't prefer to put in my mouth ( I.e your invited to someone's home and don't wish to be rude ) I say fck it, and I eat whatever I want, KNOWING, that I'm armed with fasting in my arsenal. So I indulge and fast away my indulgences within a couple days!!!! Metabolic Flexibility is the name for that !!!!!!
Hey you don't believe us?? Just try it.
    Goodluck

The dietitians who seem to get time by the media all seem to advise people to eat lots of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and reduce the fat consumption. That has not worked since the first time someone said to eat more grains and yet dietitians continue to say it. Why?

    • @camronRD
      @camronRD Рік тому

Dietitians promote a varied diet focused on protein, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, olive oil, avocados and some dairy products. They emphasize whole grains as a healthy part of a diet which is true, we work directly with the public and often find they are consuming way to many processed foods, fast foods etc, so dietitians who get media time give a good I sight to a healthy diet, a varied unprocessed diet. They/we recommend whole unrefined grains like oatmeal, rice, whole grain breads and pastas, and if a balanced you can consume those foods; take a look at the Mediterranean diet. Thanks.

Interesting fact: in bodybuilding, immediately after weight training, for muscle building purposes it’s beneficial to drink fast digesting protein along with insulin spiking sugar like dextrose. I used to do it regularly, never gained weight but gave me cavities so had to switch to an alternative.
In order to remain anabolic, the general idea was to eat slow digesting protein along with low glycemic carbs/fat throughout the day. Noticing where your body puts what you consume matters for results.

Dr Fung, thankyou so much for the work and the education! Question: in your description of old school calorie counting paradigm - you talk about the drop in metobolic rate as causing "a constant feeling being cold" as an indication that it was perhaps a short term solution that will be short lived. I gave up bread, most processed foods and most sugar... I am doing 16/8 plus occasional 2 and 3 day fasts, but I am definitely not dieting or restricting calories .... and I've lost 60 pounds in 6 months 🎉
I exercise at least 60 mins almost everyday (in fun ways)..... However I must admit I am cold all the time. ❄ I can cope witlh it easily with warm clothing.... it's much better than being too hot! But your comment has me worried. Does being cold all the time indicate something negative about my weight loss process or the speed that I lost it??

I eat whenever I´m hungry, but I don`t eat sugar for decades and no bread since 12 months ago, the main meals are lot`s of vegetables (up to 1 kg/day) with meat and oliveoil, no carbs...in the morning or between some oats with apple and curd cheese and/or fatty yoghurt, in summary mostly ~ 150g oats/day in ~ 3 portions, (= 25 -30% carbs ) with veggies I estimate ~ up to 40-45 %....I don`t expect any substantiell bloodglucose spike and fat storage ever from ~ 50g Oats buffered with fat/protein.... lost a little weight, 61 yrs 71kg, BMI 20,7
I don`t eat any processed food/carbs...and oats are much cheaper...
Some other opinion I heard, by consuming carbs, processed and/or in higher quantity you better do intermed.fasting. We burn some 100 kcal/hour, every excess goes to body fat, by slow impact of low glycemic load and muscle activity there is no excess. Of course, if your "snacks" are 600kcal pure crap...some 450kcal goes to fat storage.

Hospitals, doctors offices and schools should be places where good nutrition is taught and provided not places that contribute to disease and obesity. It is crazy the hospitals are feeding people the very food that caused the heart disease, high blood pressure or cancer that they are treating. Every person in the hospital should receive some nutrition education before being released. Every doctor visit should be an opportunity to educate patients about how food choices impacts their health outcomes. The fact that doctors do not get nutrition training as part of their training makes no sense. Medicare and Medicaid should require nutrition education as part of patient care. Focus should be on food choices. Fasting should be investigated as a treatment for disease.

My grandmother died 103 with type I since age of 40, never had any insulin injection, never had more than 1.00 glucose in blood, she managed it with artichoke and topinambour, she took metformin I think, that's all. This should be everyone's healthy living lifestyle. If you don't cut out ALL SUGARS and things that convert into sugars, don't do long term intermittent fasting of 16/24+ hours which is the most important recommendation on this list or don't get enough good sleep (don't eat past 6:00pm) you will not lose the bad fat weight nor gain the good muscle wight effectively, nor create a healing environment for the body to heal itself because you're limiting the bodies ability to produce HGH which helps make testosterone which does all sorts of wonderful things in the body. When I eat I eat high good fatty meats like a good 6oz rib eye steak with all the fat, whole eggs, fermented foods such as kimchi, butter, uncurred bacon, salmon, sardines, oysters, avacado, cheeses, healthy oils like olive healthy nuts like Almonds, Brazil, Chestnuts, Brazil, Hazelnuts, Macadamia nuts, Pecans, Pine nuts, sea salt, and if I'm in the mood for plant based foods I make sure they are of the cruciferous variety. Also the introduction of Boron in your diet also helps with the production of free testosterone along with, chlorella which is a natural algae that is purported to remove heavy metals and toxins from the body, along with Zinc 50mg, D3 10,000 iu, Magnesium, Niacin and maintaining a good gut flora with probiotics. I add additional vitamins such as trace minerals in my diet if I find I'm deficient in any one in particular.

For weight loss, a few zerocarb days a week works great. So does a few days with no food, but the amazing thing about fasting is all the health benefits! Some of the many benefits of doing occasional extended fasting: Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body. Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered. Fribrosis/scarring is reversed over time and telomeres are lengthened, which also helps with lung fibrosis. The hunger hormone ghrelin lowers with extended fasting and rises from dieting. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy! Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate due to norepinephrine release! Reflexes and short term memory are increased.
Thymus is regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system.
    Fasting increases nitric oxide.
Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria, plaques and viruses by the immune system.
Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods.
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus.
Losing weight through intermittent fasting shows greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period.
When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state.
What breaks a fast? Anything with protein or carbohydrates in it will break a fast, though if the amount is tiny you will go back into ketosis very quickly. Most teas and herbs are OK. Most supplements and meds will either break ketosis directly or contain a filler that will. Many medications are dangerous to take while fasting so you may have to talk to your dr. about discontinuing them during a fast.
Fasts of several days will not affect short term female fertility and may increase long term fertility, especially in women with PCOS.
Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it when the fast is broken by increasing lutenizing hormone and helps build muscle by increasing insulin sensitivity!
The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again!
Does the body preferentially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, your body always runs mainly on fat except for brief periods of very intense exercise. Your brain also prefers to burn ketones at a rate of around 2.5 to 1 when they are available in equal quantity to glucose.
Fasting stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses.
Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention!
Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
In fact, the biochemical regulator of BDNF production is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting.
Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
A fasting mimicking diet for 3-5 days in a row also provides many of the same benefits as water fasting. FMD usually has 200-800 calories, under 18 g of protein and under 18 g of carb.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice.

I am a diabetic on insulin and 3 days ago it just stopped working. I have pretty much not eaten for 3 days and convinced water will raise my blood sugar. I look at all the food I will eat and can't eat it now. I have an eating disorder sadly and even though I am considered obese at 211 pounds, I barely put in 800-1200 calories a day. I am almost obsessed with counting calories which came from in my early 20's being anorexic. I don't gain weight but I sure don't lose it. Pretty sure I could walk coast to coast and not lose a pound. I also am a hard core sugar addict and even after being diabetic since 2017 I just can't stop the stupid sugar. Every day I do try and have cut back a ton but still not enough. I gained 30 pounds going on my insulin but without it my blood sugar would be 400-500. Right now it is 140-300 depending on if I eat.

Please try eating keto or carnivore. When you've got a carb addiction it's best to get rid of it entirely. An alcoholic can't just have one drink, they can have zero, or they'll never improve. Insulin is a fat storage hormone. They give it to you so that that dangerous blood sugar gets shoved into fat cells and prevents your body from burning that fat. Stop putting the sugar and carbs in your blood and your insulin and blood sugar will go down, your body will freely use its fat stores for more stable energy over time.
It's easier to cut it out entirely then try to moderate it. The first two weeks are the hardest.

    • @elizabethwhite1068
      @elizabethwhite1068 Рік тому +4

Water will NOT and cannot raise your blood sugar. It's the very best thing to drink. You are still stuck in the old myth of calories in/calories out. When we do yo-yo, low calorie dieting it messes up our bodies and the body starts holding on to the fat because starvation might come again soon. You're going to have to retrain your mind as much as your body, but you can do it! I have some experience with what you describe and I promise you that if you change to a high fat/low carb, with moderate to high protein, you will overcome the sugar cravings naturally. When we eat plenty of healthy fats from real food (NO seed oils) we experience true satiety, which I suspect you have never felt, and it begins to dampen those cravings for carbs and sugars. I highly recommend you checking out the videos of Dr. Ken Berry as a good place to start. You will give up the fake processed foods and carbs, but you will get in their place beef and any meat and seafood you like, whole eggs, full fat dairy, real butter and lots of it, all the bacon you want, and plenty of veggies if you like them. It will be a whole paradigm shift that might take some time for both your body and mind, it's hard to change what we've had drilled into us for decades, but you will be surprised by how much better you start to feel. You will be eating until your full, no counting calories. As Dr. Fung spoke about, eating this way allows your hormones and other signals tell you when to stop eating. I also recommend the work of Zoe Harcombe, a UK researcher who dedicated her life to these issues, she's brilliant. Through her and Dr. Berry you will find other people in the real food movement who can help you. And they both have great senses of humor.

I ate 1000 calories a day for a year and 1/2, I went from 280 to 145, when I hit 145 I jumped 0 my calories up to 1250 calories a day, so I wouldn't feel as hungry, that is what I eat now, and now I am 132 lbs. with a bmi of 21.3 calorie counting worked for me, I don't see this as a myth at all

Thank goodness for people like you. Calories are a unit of energy as is the Joule. The first law of thermodynamics is based on the conservation of energy. Fat is 9 calories/gram. Adipose/fat tissue is 87% fat. To lose 1kg of body fat requires an energy deficit of approximately 7800 calories. This is not the same as losing 1kg of body weight that would be affected by fluid dynamics etc of course. People like to hear calorie counting is a myth so they can avoid putting in sustained hard work and "hack" their way into getting in shape. Any of us that successfully manipulates their body mass in a consistent and predictable manner uses calorie counting as the method. Anyone else losing weight is still in a calorie deficit even if they are not counting their calories during the process.

@@jackglass9226 You need to be at a deficit of food mass getting absorbed, versus excreted as CO2, waste products.
Problem is we're hormone regulated. Being at a caloric deficit is far easier for most people, especially the metabolically unwell, eating lower to no carbohydrate, because the fat stores that should be burned to supplement it aren't getting accessed as easily, so they're far hungrier.
Try eating bacon and eggs for breakfast one day with no carbs, and see how long it takes for you to actually get hungry and not just emotionally snacky.

Semi-starvation/starvation diets will always lead to weight loss. That's not in dispute. But it's the way that plays out at a cellular level that is so very different from reducing carbs/sugars and burning fat for energy instead of glucose. Those diets are unsustainable and the weight is almost always gained back, and then some. If this was the answer to an obese society then we wouldn't still be having a growing epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes, including in the military, 45 yrs after the government put out the first Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Blaming calories as, "not enough" to deal with obesity is a really poor way of looking at things and trying to prove your point. Doctors generally don't know much or don't ever talk about calories with their patients. Registered dietitians and/or nutritionists do. If you get 10 people to reduce calories for 8-12 weeks from their maintenance level they will lose weight, that's just how it works in terms of energy balance. The thing that leads to yo-yo dieting is getting back to old habits once the diet is over. If you get that same people to new maintenance by slowly upping their calories back most of them will remain at their new weight. Health is of course a different area of interest that can but doesn't have to be intertwined with that. It should of course but telling a person that eats 80-90% mostly healthy whole-food diet that he/she can't have an occassional treat if he/she has a sweet tooth for instance is just plain dogmatic, ignorant and for sure not rooted in real science, not this, "buy my products" usual talks.

Calorie counting is a myth, yet 100% of the time when they test it in a lab under controlled conditions, it works perfectly.

@@anomarnamloh7444 There is only so long you can conduct metabolic ward experiments as they are expensive. People aren't going to stay there unless you are paying them well. However no matter who they bring in. No matter what health conditions they have or they are perfectly healthy. The law of CICO applies and works perfectly 100% of the time when tested. IT is amazing what happens when you measure things accurately and even more so when people are unable to cheat.

I think some of it is calories but it's not that simple because hormones also get involved. My mother eats tons of carbs but she eats like a bird and is very thin. I eat like a horse but fasting 18 hours a day disrupts fat storage. I am overweight.

Does food aroma help with satiety? I’ve been doing real food and eschewing processed food since the beginning of 2023. I’ve noticed when I cook with ghee and Asian sesame oil, the aroma seems to make me feel a little fuller before eating.

This guy must not read any data from the past decade on artificial sweeteners or calorie counting. Semaglutide has its side effects but it spikes insulin and people lose a impressive amount of weight. Speaking from experience and 30 pounds lost and kept off. A high protein diet minus 500 off your maintenance calorie budget allowed me to lose weight, stay full and preserve a huge amount of muscle. Over 9 months. And I ate a lot of pizza through it as long as it fit into the budget. Crazy right. People’s downfall is the lack of honest calorie tracking. But they can’t make money if there’s no big medical secret to unlock.

Metformin seems to get the go-ahead by low carb proponents if your blood sugar is still high when diet is improved. It boosts insulin sensitivity instead of increasing insulin.
