Hence why most modern game journalism and professional critics are part of the reason why the games industry is in decline. Too be a good game to the professional reviewers, you just need to have enough money to pay them off or silence them.
@@Cowboycomando54 It's not even about "paying them off". There's just so much dis-incentive involved when it comes to talking trash about a game that was released by a major publisher. Oh you just gave an EA game a bad review? Great, now you won't get press copies of Maden, Fifa, literally any Star Wars game, and other gigantic titles, so you'll be late to the party on your reviews of a lot of high profile games.
Budget movie adaptation at that, from the same people who brought you Rambo. Half of me says that this should be seen as raising the bar on these types of games, the other half screams how this game has no business being this good.
@@0rderSol Honestly, if you want to talk about raising the bar for movie adaptations then a better example would be Alien: Isolation. Though, I dont think its really fair to this game to compare it to something like that
Definitely one of the best besides: Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher's Bay, Aliens Vs Predator 2, X-men Origins Wolverine, and Robocop Vs The Terminator for Sega Genesis.
@@Gruntvc I honestly didn't like Escape from Butcher Bay all that much. I was getting frustrated when they kept taking away all my gear. Yes, I know why they took it away but still
In the hospital level, there's a dead resistance soldier on an operating table; whose face looks just like Robert Patrick - the actor who played the T-1000.
Im so glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. and if you pay attention to later missions you will hear about how a resistance soldier betrayed tech com and shut down defenses and other sabotage. really cool how they tied all the movie lore and this game lore together pretty well and how they used the T1000 and Arnolds T850 into the story.
@@LetsGoGetThem ign would have faded into obscurity years ago if people stopped making the same joke over and over again. Read a different website and suddenly ign doesnt matter anymore.
I would also add "They made sure the John Connor in the game looks like the John Connor we see in the future in T2, almost as if they are basing this game off the first two terminator movies, you know the ones that are actually good."
It's pretty clear that this game ONLY wants to acknowledge 1 and 2. In my headcanon this is the true continuation of the original timeline and everything beyond 2 is just the result of splintering timelines. I never thought I'd say "Time travel improved this story." but here we are.
Exactly its a fucking joke how CoD get's high ratings every year a new game comes out honestly sick of how IGN and Gamespot and Metacritic shit on great games that sticks to the source material it's trying to deliver.
"Couldn't afford arnie's likeness" I think that actually might be intentional. Remember in the original movie we see other infiltrators and they don't all look like arnie. A line of "Infiltrators" that all look identical is basically useless after all. Maybe, just maybe, they made him look like some random guy on purpose, to fit with the established lore.
not a random guy............a random body builder guy that is 100 percent muscle even though there is barely any food in the post apocalypse and everyone is starving. bravo Skynet
@@KultofChristiansen Thats more likely, but I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt because why not? Why assume the worst when there's a completely reasonable, canon, logical alternative? Hell, you can even just consider it accidental quality.
I always thought that skynet having a production line of infiltrators that all look like Arnie was really dumb so I'm going with the idea that the infiltrators all use a different appearance
@@aceskeletonne7446 We do actually see them in the first movie. ua-cam.com/video/U5b92SoEGO8/v-deo.html In this scene we see another infiltrator attack a resistance base, and he's not arnie at all. Its actually Franco Columbu, one of arnie's body building friends.
What made that review more hilarious is you could tell the guy didn't even beat the first level. Which he admitted in a blog post, and defended his shit review
when people dont like game they just say stupid things to justify their bad rates on it. like they rate AA game they dont like it because it doesnt have AAA graphics and they say... "bad animation" well yes you fuck its AA game not AAA one... so yeah dont look at rates just go watch playthrough and if you like it play it.
I like playing God Hand on Hard. Not because "boner" jokes, but the fact they hit faster and and harder makes my abuse the taunt. Yeah, it fills up the TP gauge faster, but making them pissed is always a personal highlight. But, yeah. Fuck IGN for being literal sellouts.
Hey Civvie, the devs have been updating the game, they made it so an FoV slider, Chromatic Abberation, Motion blur, etc are all in the options now and it's default to 90 FoV. They've also improved the AI and even added an Infiltrator mode where you get to play as an Infiltrator on the Pasedena map (a modified one) with the objective of gathering intel to find and kill a Tech Com Commander. It's about a 45 minute, maybe an hour long depending on how thorough you are, each run changes the location of enemy spawns and side-obectives but the map is largely unchanged.
@@Hi_Just_Fred They're releasing an enhanced edition for the PS5 and a free upgrade for the PS4 owners plus a narrative DLC being released later. Not too sure about XBox owners, but that's down to the publisher.
Another important part about that infiltrator mode is that the terminator you play as is modeled after the non-Arnie terminator that busts the resistance shelter in T1. How cool is that.
It’s worth mentioning that this game’s rendition of the terminator theme is one of the best I’ve ever heard. It’s a perfect blend of futuristic and 80’s.
You did not mention the "crazy guitar solo" in the background of the sex scenes. Everyone knows that in the '90s and '80s people coundn't have sex without that and it was shown in almost EVERY action movie from the period :-D .
26:15 that is literally a scene from the movie, when some guys are going around a concrete wall, including one with a big ass machinegun which is yourself. i am mad i never noticed that during my playthrough cause thats awesome
Fun fact : when you first enter the facility to rescue the resistance at the first 2 hours of the game you will see an easter egg of the T-1000 and how they basically made him
That was a great Easter egg. I think Baron's/South Divisions' Resistance shelter is also based on the one Kyle Reese went to in that flashback scene from Terminator 1984.
@William Lowery, Yeah, it was awesome. I also liked that the infiltrator Terminator is wearing the same clothes Arnie's Terminator stole from those punks in the 1984 original too. That and having the option to name the puppy Wolfie or Max. And, the Violet/Purple plasma rifle is literally the same model as the movies'.
Hard to believe this is the same devs who did Rambo the Video Game. Give them Robocop or Starship Troopers and a bigger budget. It'll blow away all the safe soulless FPS games coming from most AAA game companies.
Reality is there are more than you think, indie and b-team stuff alike - they are just impossible to find under the waves of heavy marketing control done for the AAA titles. Same thing with movies as well. Really just everything these days - corpos run on ingenuity and success they had decades ago, and then slowly work shift into a system where the only thing that matters to them are stockholders and market control which makes the product they are responsible for worth less and is treated as such. It is literally worth more for them to put out waves of advertisements and making sure they hit the 'checkboxes' on the social/political commentary wheel as that will get more investors which makes them more money overall than a successful product ever would.
@@pacefactor Yeah, when there's a successful movie or game that does something creative and innovative, the bean counters who control the funding and the investments will decide that the safest bet will be to keep repeating it, again and again, until it's no longer profitable. The way business works, unfortunately, I don't see this changing. There's no way out.
How did these madmen went from Rambo to this? what was the Rambo meeting like?: "Ok guys lets just sit down, and just make the absolute worse thing we can do, just absolute garbage so we can get it out of our system and then after that we make an actually good game".
@@williamlydon2554 Main difference being Shepard would give you a smack on the ass and a wink after saying that and be 100% sarcastic about it. On a side note I had to stop myself from saying her or she multiple times in that sentence cause I never play male Shep but remembered other people do lol.
@@theninjamaster67 That's the best part of the Mass Effect novels. The few times they mention the events of the games they have to be all vague about it and Shepard is always danced around since they can't describe them in any specific way.
@@williamlydon2554 That's honestly a pretty fun fact to know mainly learning Mass Effect has novels but secondly that the writers of said novels have to be super vague talking about Shep. That fact kind of reminds me of the song Repeat Stuff by Bo Burnham where he says "I love your hands 'cause your fingerprints are like no other I love your eyes and their blueish brownish greenish color I love it when you smile, that you smile wide and I love how your torso has an arm on either side." That right there is basically how I imagine a writer who can't say much about the character would describe Shep lol.
14:00 - your ultravision disables the moment you start moving too quick, but the visual effect stays for a bit longer, which is why you couldn't see the terminator in that instance. If you had not ru, your UV would've pick him up. On 14:34 you can see this in effect - the moment you start moving fast, terminators disappear from visor, but the green effect stays for a few moments.
Not in this case, dial it back to 13:50 and you can see the UV is on, and the second terminator simply isn't visible in the background, when you can see at 14:30 that it absolutely should have been close enough to be visible if it was spawned in at the time.
You really can. I looked at the Connor model they used, then went back and looked at the film version - they based the model on the original future war Connor actor, all the details just right.
It's happening Civvie! The Narrative DLC involving Kyle Reese is coming out on December 10th, it's stated to be roughly 4 hours in length, so if you could do your own review-take on the DLC as well, that'd be super.

@@sirshotty7689I mean, Salvation at least tried to show the future war, something that Genesys and Dark fate chickened out to show a worse retelling of T2. If they had dropped the whole hybrid terminator crap in Salvation and just showed the gritty future war that we got in this game and was teased all the way back in Reese's memories in T1, it would have been a fine movie or even a good movie.
@@carlosdgutierrez6570 yeah I found salvation to be enjoyable but it’s also pretty forgettable in my opinion. But I wouldn’t say it’s outright bad by any means. I'd give it an 8/10. Definitely not an evolution of the FPS genre. But a solid single player focused game that does not over stay its welcome and has no baloney like microtransactions/loot boxes or bogged down by politics. As for being a Terminator game, it may very well be the best one. It really does respect the canon.

An absolute treasure of a reference I got immediately came at the very end; When you follow John Connor through the tunnel to the final battle, and he surveys the battlefield it is a one to one recreation of the opening of T2 where they reveal John in the future. As someone who watched T2 every chance he could get for years that was just a cherry on top of the fan service sundae that this game ended up being.
@@user-vf3cb7vk8z It seems like right now the devs are actually just making DLC and updating this game. IDK if that's because the real apocalypse made game development grind to a halt or because they rock (or both), but it's definitely refreshing. Especially because they already added a new (fairly short) mode that lets you play a mission as an infiltrator _and_ supposedly the DLC they're working on will be free.
An awesome detail in the game is when the resistance bunker gets hit later in the game, it’s supposed to be the exact same bunker from the flashback in the first film. Every single detail is spot on from the tv with the fire in it to the bunker entrance. The infliltrator you fight is implied to be Franco Colombo’s terminator. It’s awesome attention to detail like that which is why I fucking *love* this game.
2019 was a giant joke for IGN. Giving Terminator Resistance a 4/10 is bad enough. But, the reviewer for Resident Evil 2 Remake claimed there was no B scenario campaign when the game literally tells you that you unlocked the 2nd scenario after ya finish the A one. And then there's the Ace Combat review lmao. Bet they gave a higher score to that dumpster fire that was Call of duty Modern Warfare reboot 2019 lol.
There's that joke about IGN Being ignorant but that's low hanging fruit to put it mildly. That being said, this looks like a game I actually want to try, if I ever get a better computer for it. Also when Civvie showed the shotgun being reloaded, I expected one of two things, Gordon Ramsey or Bettlejuice. I wasn't dissapointed. I would have watched this past the spoilers but for at least right now, I may show some interest in buying this, bu maybe not. In any event. Good video as always Civvie.
At the start of the game I was running from every Terminator I saw and in the end with the violet plasma weapons it's like "what's up skynet you where talkin all that good shit a minute ago"
The hospital level was the most fun I've ever had in a stealth section, and it was so satisfying hacking turrets to blow through guys. At a certain point though it's better to use Plasma weapons and blow through enemies than stealth it out, I hit a few walls trying to still be stealthy later in the game. Still a great experience I'll treasure for a long time. 👍
Also the fact that the other 2 good Terminator Games Civvie reviewed were made by Bethesda, and that this game feels a lot like a Bethesda Fallout Game, makes me ponder.
@@Strawberry92fs This game feels like Fallout 4, gunplay of which was programmed by id Software, so it is really good. Like shooting is solid and fun. I need to replay this.

I mean ..... That's essentially what happens in the sex scene in the first movie too...... Except with a piano. The makers of this game get what they're making here.
Fallout ended with 1 and 2. Bethesda's fallout is just looter shooter for cod players, the saddest part is that they had a game so simple and basic that it appeals to the masses and they STILL fucked it up.
I’ve had a great time with this game so far. I was surrounded by T-800s at one point and my only choice was to sneak by. It felt like I was being hunted by the Alien in Alien Isolation. It is a fine game.
You know, you gotta admire how movie buffs get the short end of the stick when it comes to new releases like Star Wars and Terminator while us gamers end up doing a hell of a lot better than they are when it comes to the same thing
Yeah, we actually got a good Terminator game from one of the worst developers which took me COMPLETELY off guard and we also got a great Star Wars game.
And the good thing is that the game doesn't penalise the player for going blasting despite the instruction/ "You get the instruction to get the lowest risk, but I don't care if you took higher risk and go nuts. You're getting the job done nonetheless."
Hi Civvie, thank you for making a review that does this game justice. As you said, devs like these need all the love they can get. If they can make me feel immersed in the T1 and T2 world and lore...imagine what they can do with a bigger budget and a larger team. Love the channel, keep up the good work, and best of luck and success in 2020.
@@ngageman1988 I mean I could have gotten more but I didn't have the inventory space really, selling lesser circuits you pick up really breaks the economy of the game.
That was clearly irony. Even on the hardest/survival/hardcore modes, you get enough of them. Or at least, you can craft and buy them in large quantities.
I did a lot of stealth and resource collecting throughout the whole game, then dumped some exp. into crafting and just went nuts in the last few levels. I also wanted to save up for Plasma ammo once I finally got to use those weapons, it was a blast. I laugh at people who are adamant that a game is only good if it's hard and takes forever to beat. I had my fun and worked with what I got, then was rewarded with one last bit of power hungry fun blasting lasers like a madman without having to restart at checkpoints because of running low on health!
I literally just beat this game yesterday, this is weird timing. I basically agree with everything you said, except I'd say it's more of a B+ I had a great time playing this! Refreshing to play a decent AA game. We dont get many AA games these days, either AAA, or indie games really.
And the AAA games are usually cash grabs, and the indies are usually overly-simplistic "cartoon style" bullshit designed to be as simplistic and terrible as possible
Something that made me chuckle was later in the game Baron describes Mack as “a man, not a god”. A reference to the overplayed line from the Rambo game that Angry Joe brought up in his review. I love it when a developer can take criticism on board, have a joke about it and use it to improve. Edit: it’s at the beginning of chapter 18 if anyone was wondering (21:52 in the video, didn’t realise that clip was in this when I wrote it)

The laser rant is so silly because if they started with the purple lasers as the low-level, the implication would be that in the movies the terminators are using the starting level lasers instead of the most powerful ones available
@@silverhand9965 I'd say it's less incompetence and more a lack of ethics making them willing to shill for big companies. You can enjoy Fallout 76 but nobody in good faith could possibly think that this game is worse.

I can't believe it's been five years & gamers are still flapping out these rehashed gamergate memes about muh ethics in game journalism. How many years until you morons notice that ALL "journalism," in all industries AND good old fashioned news reporting, has these same problems? Pandering to their sources of income, quoting press releases, chasing a bottom line rather than informing their audiences? Do you think there's some kind of Games Journalism University that's consistently teaching the Bad Ethics to their graduates, as a joke? Maybe Bethesda or Zoe Quinn told them to? Fucking idiots i stg.
@Autismo Eh, the prequels weren't good themselves but they spawned enough content made by other people for them to be redeemable. The Clone Wars cartoon for example and Republic Commando.
It's surprising when a B-grade licensed game actually manages to be surprisingly good. Even with the hitching issue this is probably the best piece of Terminator media since the 90s.
@George Corbul yeah. The game manages to be a good sequel to the movies compared to the high budget new movies. It is loyal to the series and tried its best to give us the terminator game we wanted despite having a low budget.
I just wanted to point out, you mention that the Stranger is clearly Rivers from the future... but that's actually debatable. At the end of the game, once the battle is over, you're given an option to go back in time and do all that shit, knowing it'll lead to your death, or you can stay in the future and John sends some hapless nobody soldier to do it instead, since SOMEONE has to do it to ensure the timeline stays intact. I always liked that they left it kinda vague as to who the guy really was, so either ending can play out, and it's not 100% clear either way what choice you're 'meant' to make in that scene. It's a small thing but I just really liked that they left it vague like that. No pressuring the player to make the 'right' choice, it's just entirely in your hands.
Was really surprised how good this one turned out. But you could see a lot of cut corners there. With more budget + time this could have been really great. But it did really feel like a labor of love. Except those sex scenes. Those were absolutely horrible. Nightmare fuel.
Don't you mean the single best part of this game? No? Welp, guess we play for different kinds of entertainment values. Bad that is so bad it's good again is good. (and yes, that sentence makes sense)
Those sex scenes, if my mother would look at my monitor, i would rather just turn real porn on, at least I can Explain that. Like, if you want to SHOW us sex, then why not do it properly? Because seeing people die by robots is okay, but dicks and vaginas are not?
I'd also say they've cut corners but there is also corners that didn't get filled in. Some things can feel a bit tacked on, like the scavenging and crafting, which gives a sense of survival and scarcity, but you'd never really going to be short on anything. I played the game on the hardest difficulty and even without crafting anything i got to the last level bulging with guns, bombs, first aid kit and ammo. The AI especially with the Terminators is also a bit wanting, was really never a fan of enemies forgetting your existence once you're out of sight. Leveling system is a bit simple, but effective, they've properly scaled it down to what the game actually offers. You can see the possible wide scope they were trying to get at, but they sadly never got there. Its easy to tell that its supposed to be an Open World game from the get go. Its a rare case of having too much butter on too little a bread.
@@SonicTheFrenchHorn look dude, we're trying to give them the benefit of the doubt here. And the Infiltrator mode where you play as a Terminator in hardcore mode is just another cool addition. Edit: and when you find in the hospital the body of a resistance fighter with the face of Robert Patrick? Hinting that the machines copied his appearance to shape the T1000, that was a master touch!
it reminds me of homefront, a game I actually enjoyed that got shit on. honestly I might see about picking up a copy of this, it looks actually decent. it'd be a game that benifits alot from a modding community tho, especially with those..."animations"
I also played the Homefront reboot on PC and while it was pretty rough on release, it got much better post patch, as you mentioned. I don’t know why people crap on AA games. We need them. It’s a definitely 6.5/10 game but those can be enjoyed if people go into it with the right expectations. Plus, the great thing about 7/10 games like Homefront: The Revolution is they go on sale and stay on sale shortly after release. So you can play a decent 35ish hour campaign for like $15 bucks. The amount of games folks had written off that I bought on Steam for pennies and ended up really enjoying is endless. Even AAA games that had issues on release that every one abandons usually run fine a couple months down the line. Looks at Arkham Knight or even Mafia III. Those games still get shit on by PC players and I’m over here with like 1000 hours into both of them.
@@Ward413 yep I played Mafia 3 and AK year after release with the DLCs and enjoyed them immensely. Finished Mafia 3 twice even. It has flaws but the gameplay and atmosphere is just as good as in previous games.
Homefront: The Revolution wasn't a bad game but it became repetitive after some missions. This one has an actual story and is placed in The Terminator galaxy which is a bonus point.
Yeah, it was always pretty hard to take the guy seriously. He blows things out of proportion, I get it's his schtick, but it gets old when you just want to hear simple points about the game discussed. He also apparently is a total chode when talking to other people, he tried yo start shit with a guy organizing some event and recorded it. Then he tried to play it off like the other guy was in the wrong and tried to twist the situation but he outsmarted him, even though it's pretty clear Joe was the one starting stuff and looked like the fool.
Lol yeah I also reacted to that. It's kinda rare to see youtubers call out other youtubers acting stupid, atleast the kind that aren't bloody serious drama where one side must be destroyed. So yeah it was kinda satisfying to point and laugh at a man screaming about the color of lasers outside of his own bubble where that's not normal.
@@DajuOnUA-cam I find the way that Civvie shits on other channels and tired conventions in youtube game review videos to be extremely refreshing. And he uses a lot of the same, cliche youtube shit but always in a very self-aware, but somehow while acting both disdainful of it but without acting like he's too good for it. I think it's a delicate balance that's both a lot harder to pull off than most people would think while still flying under most people's radars. Good stuff. Sewer count: 7, 7 1/2 raw models.
I loved Resistance so much. The music, the look, the competent gameplay, and the *immersiveness* of the game's world... It's the best usage of the Terminator license since Judgment Day.
This game felt like the love child between Fallout and Stalker who grew up to be the biggest Terminator fanboy. I loved it. Sure, it does nothing new, but everything it does is great. Plus the update was basically a free DLC that further improves the experience. 8/10 would recomend AND play again.
I think Painkiller video comment section would be filled with polish retro gamers. How do I know that? Well... Let's just say I'm sorta one of them myself.
Infiltraitor mode is great and really shows why a terminator is dangerous. Bust down a door to a room full of people all guns pointing guns at the door even having a mini gun turret and it all amounts to squat as you just lay waste to them.
This is my favorite Terminator game. And I've played every Terminator game I know of including all the Bethesda games, the T2 and Salvation Lightgun Arcade games, War of the Machines, the various NES, SNES Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Sega Genesis and CD, PS2, and PS3 games. Hell I even gave the various mobile games a try until I got bored with them. It is what I was hoping for when I first heard about it. A blend of a modern open word or semi-open world game mixed with Future Shock and Skynet. I just wish it were longer. Hopefully despite the bribed professional review scores like IGNs the game does well enough that more samilar Terminator games with bigger budgets follow, and they aren't forced to set future games in the Dark Fate version of the Machine War.
"You can't put a puppy in a game and then have the main character give it to a child and have that game be bad. You can't." That sounds like a challenge.
I genuinely loved this game when it came out- I'm a /massive/ Terminator fan and seeing the future war stuff so lovingly handled really felt great. Sure, you can see the seams and there's plenty of 'with more budget' moments, but like you said: you should encourage this kind of thing. Baron: Use a vent in the command room to sneak past them.

Hi Civvie, thank you for making a review that does this game justice. As you said, devs like these need all the love they can get. @@otakon17 dozens I've got like 230 in last mission don't ask why.

"It has a little something for everyone."
Sarah Connor Chronicles?
@@spencerreynolds0617 Agreed. But that show wrote itself into a hole at the end of Season 2.
Sounds German still better sex than my ex ever gave me
Don't you mean the single best part of this game? No?
Welp, guess we play for different kinds of entertainment values. Bad that is so bad it's good again is good. (and yes, that sentence makes sense)
Btw, I'd hit those babes.

Homefront was decent but very flawed, the sequel was absolute garbage.
And he uses a lot of the same, cliche youtube shit but always in a very self-aware, but somehow while acting both disdainful of it but without acting like he's too good for it.
