an excellent tutorial!! Thank you so much. My new laptop gets here tomorrow and as a 70 yr old lady I was concerned I wouldn't be able to get this done! I am much more confident now!
Just migrated from a 2013 MBP to new m3 pro. What a difference after 11 years with old faithful. Thanks for the video, you made it super simple and successful on the first time.
Be aware that you have to disconnect your old Mac from iCloud before you start cleaning it up. I didn't know that they were linked. I deleted off the old and it did the same to the new. I lost files because of this.
Couple of questions for you kind sir. 1. Does it matter if the old mac is real old like a 2011 MacBook to a new modern mac? 2. Is there a way to use ethernet connection for both mac’s to speed up the process?
Great questions. First if you are coming from an old Mac, my advice would be to update it to the newest IOS possible which will maximize the best transfer possible. I have not done it with a gap that large, but try. For your second question. See the section on the Thunderbolt cable and do the process with an ethernet cable. It should speed up the process a lot.
Is it „cleaner“ to transfer data from the old to new mac or to install everything from scratch? I don’t want old unnecessary files (like cache files, temporary files or files from unclean deinstallations) transfered to the new system
I just wanna know if this method will transfer everything (including the installed software and the data generated when using the software) to the new mac as if I were still using my old one?
💕🔥 100% helpful, I didn’t need to refer to anything or have questions. Non-intimidating video which walks you through step by step. Thank you 🙏🏼 so much for making this ♥️
BUDDY THANK YOU SO MUCH !!! I migrated from a 2013 to the latest one M3 16”, I used your technique with the cable too and it went Faster . Thanks Again.
Great video! Do you have to do something special for the lighting cable to recognize the two computers? I have them connected and it’s still transferring via wireless.
Thank you for this. The apple guy at the store told me to just have the MacBook near the new one and it’ll recognize it like iPhones do. Was NOT the case. This worked perfectly.
What if you have already initialized the new Mac (with a single Admin account) and want to migrate several users from an old Mac over to the new machine? What of the procedure will be different than what you went over?
Great job! I just transferred some files from my MacBook Pro 2012 to a brand new MacBook Air M3. If I didn’t watch your video, I would’ve been clueless! Thank you for doing such a concise video! Much appreciated.
The longer the time gap, the greater the possibility that the transfer will not be fully successful. But 2017 to 2024 should be fine. I have not done this without an Apple ID, but that should work as well.
When you say they are mirrors now. I have and old 2013 MacBook Pro with Catalina porting over to a new MacBook Pro Sonoma 14.4 Mirror would mean what in this context? Thank you
Thoughts on doing a fresh/manual transfer of data vs the migration assistant so you're not bringing over a bunch of junk that will slow your new mac down?
Can seem to find what I need to do. My old MacBook has died no power and as it’s over 10 years old. Is there a way of taking the whole data off the drive onto a new MacBook keeping all the settings
Does this transfer all users as well, or only the one that you had the migration assistance open in? And if it’s all users, can I simply transfer data from one user?
How about transfer of files from MacBook ProRD (2015) which only has USB A? Can I use USB A to USB C cable for connecting old Mc with the new MacBook Pro M3?
For some reason I can’t get thunderbolt to be recognized during migration. I have restarted the process 5 times and have both MacBook plugged in to the wall plus tethered together with another thunderbolt cord. I’ve restarted both etc.
Thanks! My mac m1 can't keep up with the editing so I ordered an m2 pro. I was drudging the setup I would have to do with Davinci Resolve in order to get it with all the plugins & extras I've added over the years.
is it possible to use type C to USB cable for speeding up the migration? as i want to migrate my Old Macbook air 2015 to Macbook Air 2020 M1..or is there any option to speeding the migration up?😊
On my old mac i have 288GB marked as "other" in my storage. I guess this is like cache, settings and lots of junk - and i don't want to fill up my new computer with it. Is there a way i could transfer everything important and not that? Should i uncheck the box with my name in the migration app? What else will i lose in that case? Thanks!
Could you just use the USB-C thunderbolt cable right from the outset? Would migration assistant recognize that over Wi-Fi? I believe in your video you used the cable part way through to show that the computer would recognize it and adapt. So, I'm wondering if you could do that at the outset. Thanks.
I have a question. I have a 13" Macbook Pro with a user nameandsurname. I have a 15" Macbook Pro with a user nameandsurname15. I bought a 14" M4 and when I used migration assistant to restore data from TimeMachine (it wouldn't allow me to do it directly from the 15" computer using only TM) I found the entire image of the 15" computer and wasn't able to rename the main folder as I did when I migrated from the 13" computer to the 15" computer. I want every Macbook I own to have its own name on the user account and the main folder. So, now that I have nameandsurname15 as a main folder and user, if I create a new admin user I may not change the main folder name as Linux doesn't permit it and even if I try restoring again it won' give me the option to choose a name (for the USER and main folder) like it used to do. Any idea? Thank you.
Hey Dion my old MacBook Pro 2011 model has the Mac OS high sierra operating system - how can I transfer data across to my new M2 - am lost as to how to process this?
The longer the age between the two the more difficult it will be. My suggestion is just to do it, make sure the 2011 model is on its latest Operating System. You do not run the risk of losing your original information, so trying will not harm
Hi I’ve followed your instructions and part way through the new mac has a message on the screen saying ‘this Mac is attempting to reconnect to your other Mac’ and the only option it gives is to ‘cancel transfer ‘ what would you recommend?? Thanks
I will be migrating from an 9yr old MacBook Pro which operates on OS Catalina to a new MacBook Air. Migrating will not replace the new apps with the older apps?
Hello. I am looking for the opposite. I only want to transfer my I Tunes from old laptop to New laptop (so much easier to organize and update on my 2012 lptop). Do you have a video on transferring limited data from laptop to laptop? Thankyou!
Hi, sorry for the late reply. I do not have a video on this topic specifically, but the easiest way to proceed is go to your old laptop, select the songs and playlists manually to a hard drive, go to your new laptop and add them to the music library of your new laptop
the mac asked me to make a new password during migration process . is that the new password for the login or does it use the password of the old mac login?
Great tutorial! I have an older iMac and considering buying a Mac mini 2pro. I am assuming that transferring all the files will be the same as shown in your video, with the exception of having only one screen. However, one thing you haven't mentioned! What about the Lightroom catalogue?, does that get transferred or do I have to do that manually? with regards Guenther from Austria

This steps are not working on my MacOs 13 to another new MacOs 14 so what should i want to do migrate it??? when ever im trying to do this getting lots of error
