The LNER headrests have been removed as they’re getting replaced. Also there’s a plug per seat in first class which is why there’s only one USB on each, rather than two.
Great video Charles and a good comparison of both Lumo and LNER. I do use LNER regularly to Leeds and Doncaster from London but have used Lumo before and would use again
Nice video, I enjoyed it - thanks. I'll use First Class on a rail service when, like you, I can tell myself that the extra cost is money I'd probably spend anyway on refreshments. Alternatively, if I'm going on an actual holiday - I've had a couple of memorable trips in 1st Class on LNER from York to Inverness which were great fun. Living in Sheffield there aren't actually any open access operators available to me - I've got to get over to Doncaster for Hull Trains or Grand Central. I have sometimes used one of them in the morning on the way to London and then EMR direct to Sheffield coming back.
I am taking Avanti to Manchester from London in a few weeks, as a carer got a £50 return ticket economy class which isn't bad for UK travel, and dynamic pricing pushing prices up as you get closer to the date of travel. It would be a lot more without the discount.
So the worst first class experience I had was on the highland cheftain from King’s Cross to Inverness, we only had one cold drink service between London and Newcastle, staff didn’t really come around and there was nobody to complain to about it especially for an 8 hour journey
I’m based in Inverness so, for me, it’s an eight hour marathon down to London. I find the LNER seats pretty uncomfortable, even in 1st, for that length of trip. So, literally as I write, I’m on the return leg of a new approach; inter-city bus to Edinburgh from Inverness, couple of hours in Edinburgh for lunch, then the Lumo down to London. I was really pleasantly impressed surprised by Lumo; affordable, bang on time, pleasant staff and (I believe) more comfortable seats. Plus you do get that chance of a decent leg-stretch in Edinburgh, which is generally healthier.
I have travelled LNER First Class to attend a wedding in Leeds. They give you Budvar - the original Czech Budweiser, as opposed to the cheap American knock-off!
AlAlso worth comparing Lumo with LNER standard class. I think the seats are better on Lumo.. table leg positions on LNER are terrible and seats are way too firm..
I completely agree. Any time I’m looking to go standard class I’ll be looking for Lumo availability, it’ll be cheaper than LNER standard in most cases too
Rail experts would agree. I understand that LNER's standard class seats were specified by the DfT (as were those fitted to GWR's bi-mode trains). Note that these trains are almost identical except, obviously, the livery and whether they are pure electric (Lumo for example) or bi-mode. Lumo is 'open access' and part of First Group which had the freedom to specify Lumo's seating which is more comfortable.
I imagine Lumo are losing out on a fair amount of revenue by not serving the refreshments until after they check tickets etc. After a couple of trips on which they served the refreshments far too late, I have always taken my own on board. Given the very few stations they call at, usually with plenty of time in between, why don’t they serve the refreshments first?!
@@B1ll1709 it's a catch 22 really they should have it seperate duties or pincer to the middle from either end first of all, at least they check tickets compared to XC your crammed in usually,
LNER also have a pride train too as do Cross-country and Transpenine express, also being LGBT isn't a mental illness. Your probably more mentally ill to support Leicester oh don't take the train to there either Cross-country & EMR also aren't as bigoted,
@@isaactimmins8959 yup 🤣 honestly if someones getting so worked up about some colours on a train then they really need to grow up LGBT people exist, deal with it lol
Good review, very clear and informative. No silly music or "look at me" all the time. Really enjoyed. Kelly is gorgeous, btw.
Thanks! And yes I completely agree on that last point!
Great video... plenty of useful information for Train Travelers as we are Thank you

I still would like to ride on Lumo as their trains are so nice. I have been on LNER many times before.

Yeah that definitely doesn’t sound very first class!

Both looked pretty good in my opinion. Comfortable and punctual and you definitely had good luck being seated in a very quiet first class carriage.
Yeah they both made it a very pleasant journey, and I agree about how quiet it was on LNER. Never had it so empty!
Unfortunately Lumo doesn't stop at York which is my local hub so I'm unlikely to ever get to be able to use one.

You need to do a Cross-country vs TPE on the same corridor too,
I actually did a cross country vs TPE in first class recently! Between Newcastle and Durham
@@charlesontravels now if only XC could get some of the Hitachi's then it would be a real level playing field 😅
I have heard that Lumo is getting better. I still would like to ride on Lumo.
I was on Lumo last week up and down to London, it was tatty and tiresome, I will go with LNER 1st Class in future, it's worth paying the extra.
Ok

Very true! Unless it’s a very tall family of four!

Exactly! If they’d come round sooner or allowed pre-ordering on departures from our station we might have bought something.
