  • Hi, it's Kazuki!
I finally got my Schott NYC Cafe Racer leather jacket (style 530) tailored!
I have been wondering if the sleeves were too long for me and I should do something about it.
This jacket is very expensive, and I was a bit concerning making any alteration on this.
So, I reached out to a professional, Leo's Custom Leather & Repair located in Chicago, IL.
He did an amazing job! I was second-guessing myself if I should have purchased this jacket that was not fitting me well, but now I am liking it even better!
If you are in Chicago and need a help with your leather item, go check them out!
    God Bless, America🇺🇸

Looks much better! 👍 You got a great price for the tailoring, too bad you didn't get a great deal for the jacket though. 🤦😂

Yeah leather jacket is expensive. You can look into thrift store and get them chaeper! (They are very durable and will last long)

I'm the same size as you in height 5'4" and I weight 165 pounds. Mos of my Schott Jackets I get them in large except the aviator. I can see we are the same height without shoes but way different weight size. No wonder your my height but you use smaller sizes. I guess height is not everything when it comes down to leather jackets. Is how it fits feels n looks on you. Sharp your cafe racer it goes real neat with your height and thin body. Good choice by selecting this type of jacket and the good taylor you took to get it right. Saludos y la mejor suerte brody

      Hi! Thanks for the comment!
That's interesting you wear the size L! I first tried size S and it was too big.
Yeah I guess it's not just the hight that matters but also the width of the body too.

As long as you find a proper leather tailoring shop, you're good. And it seems like the place you took yours has quite a lot of work hehe, so that's a good sign. And it's a proper charge. However, here in MX i got similar jackets in construction to Schott for around 100 USD with proper calfskin or cowhide leather (My first was lamb but i decided i should use only calfskin and above. Calf is nice since it can be either very soft like a buttery cowhide or on the other side have a similar consistency to veg tanned horsehide, very stiff and shiny.) and the tailoring work costs me around 10 / 20 bucks for a very elaborate work or mod. I now have three jackets only, a black calfskin cafe racer (That needs to be repaired...) a very nice thick pebbled cowhide vintage cafe racer (I conditioned it today) and a buttery calfskin, brown car coat. I was thinking on putting a burgundy dye on it and i did a little test on the inside, however, i'm not fully convinced since it is quite a lot of work to hand dye a jacket, will take at least several hours.
Very beautiful jacket, best wishes Kazuki

By the way, the workshop who used to work for me was Confecciones Victoria, a very professional shop with around 60 years of history in my city, by far the most experienced workers here. However, they were having a few problems and they seemed to be nearing bankruptcy, so i hope they recover from that since their work is very reasonably priced and they work with all types of leathers, ie they can sew the thickest leather used for jackets which is around 3.5, almost 4oz, or its equivalent, 1.4mm, which is usually moto grade leather. My measurements on leather samples i have seen are the following:
Lambskin: Used in jackets always 2oz or 0.8mm or less, extremely fragile
Calfskin: With corrected grain, between 0.7 and 1mm, slightly less than 2oz to 2.5, and that is already a better cut almost as good as cowhide itself. Horsehide also has this measurements and feels like a smooth, supple, buttery calfskin with tighter grain
Cowhide / Steerhide: Always has an artificial pebbled grain, i've never seen a smooth grain cowhide here. Used for moto grade, the stiffest and thickest, ranges from 1mm / 2.5oz to around 1.4mm / 3.5oz, that one is by far the most durable leather you can get here
There is also the other shop for leather tailoring in my city, which are currently the greatest manufacturers in the state and make their own garments. A couple of years ago i found them to be of rather questionable quality and could use several mods to be better (Single main / simple seam in the back which allows water inside, very easily damaged hides, poor patterns, et cetera)
I will probably just repair my calfskin jacket (A 20 dollar mod, put a flannel lining to it, fix the sleeves and put zipps inside again, quite simple) and buy a Perfecto clone. Always had a bad time getting Perfectos. The first didn't fit me in the shoulders and was a very thin leather, second, fit me baggy since i was extremely skinny during the pandemic and that jacket ended up destroyed since i tore it apart, the third, had a fit two sizes above mine since they sized me incorrectly, and the fourth, which i just sold, initially fit me right, but the leather was extremely heavy, extremely stiff, and as i gained weight, it didn't even fit me anymore)
Hence, i'm wanting to get a single Perfecto in calfskin or stuff, or also, a single rider with a shirt collar, i really like those lately

Hi! Thank you so much for sharing you experience and thought!
This jacket is my first and only jacket I currently own, and I am planning to wear it very long time. It's still too cold here in Chicago but I will keep wearing when it's warm enough.
Good luck with your jackets too!

Thanks! I think the jacket could be shortened a bit too tho (the torso) but it looks much better with the shortened sleeves!

Nice, but the jacket still look a bit too long in your body specially the back. Cafe racer style I feel look real nice when they just end below the belt line, just enough to cover the belt buckle at the front. This is my problem with schott jackets which is why I sold mine. There is this company called aero leather which also have classic cafe racers. You should check them out if you like this style of jacket. They have 3 cafe racer style jackets, a board racer, J 100, and a typical cafe racer check them out.

Thanks for the comment! Yeah I asked them to shortened the length of the torso part, but they said they cannot. I'm still pretty happy with the result, but might still want to find someone who can do that for me.
Aero Leather is nice, I hear!

I second that. It would look better on you if it was shorter on the back.

@@eNTo0o0 I agree! I'm trying to get bigger (I go to gym) but it may be easier if I just make the jacket smaller lol
