    A good leather jacket will last longer than you will - but only if you take care of it. Leather is skin and just like your face, it needs moisturizing and cleaning if you want it to look its best. Fortunately, you don't need to clean and condition a jacket as often as your face, but it can be tough to know the right way to go about this process. Let Jason Schott, the COO of Schott, answer all your questions.

    I have a 30-year old leather jacket that I bought in the glory days of Century 21 in NYC. I’ve never done a thing to it. It has quite a patina - but has gone beyond patina to feeling dryish and a little papery. Even has a fraying look around the collar that must be rot. I will go ahead and condition. Thanks for the video!!

    Lexol makes a gentle cleaner and a conditioner that would work great for a leather jacket. I often see them at my local automotive and hardware stores. I mostly wipe my jacket down with a damp rag gently dabbed in saddle soap and hang it up to dry overnight. Then I lightly apply Kiwi Leather Lotion by hand, about once per year, depending on wear frequency. I would not oil a nice leather jacket unless it's in dire straits, but that's just me.

    👢I bought some used Red Wing Rough Neck boots in rough and tough leather. They were the right size but really hurt my feet. I weighted them down in a 5 gallon bucket of water over night. The next day I took them out, let them drip dry for an hour, put grocery bags on my feet, and wore them the rest of the day. The following day I conditioned them. They are beautiful and fit like a glove. That leather and cork was able to be re-shaped. Your leather gets wet in the rain. Don’t be afraid to take a hose to it. Just make sure to re-oil. 😊

      Any oil with the least smell to it will work on leather more or less the same way, mink oil for boots will work way better than food - grade oil so, yes. Here in Mexico there aren't many conditioners in the market so we have to use a single oil (Castor) for either boots, jackets, purses, bags, belts, saddles, wallets, straps...

    How about softening leather?

    • @coinecc
      @coinecc Рік тому +4

      Oil will be better than waxes in that case. Also the warmth of your body/environment and time will naturally help. But if you're specifically asking about leather *jackets*, and not just leather in general, then if it's something like a stiff horsehide, not much will "soften" it other than temporarily with acute warmth. The jacket molding to the body will making it feel more comfortable too, which does take time if it's a new, stiff jacket.

    • @Paddythefriendlykiwi
      @Paddythefriendlykiwi Рік тому

      Wear it to death. It will mould to you and soften.

    • @javierdiazsantana
      @javierdiazsantana Рік тому +1

      Oils and body heat are the greatest combination for that. People always suffering from breaking in jackets or boots but if they gave a couple hands of oil (Or even saddle soap cleaning because it does have oils) it will soften it heavily. Same for boots, gloves and such. Other leather goods are better off being firmer like belts or saddles or certain parts of jackets, when riding a bike you want the inner section of the sleeves and upper back to be supple but the front, sides, sleeve outer and back overall to be way more rigid to withstand a fall or such. Waxes are useful for softening since they also nourish the leather, but need heat to soften. That is why you put on a waxed jacket and it is kinda rigid when it is fresh / cold out of the closet and starts softening up as you wear it.

  • @javierdiazsantana
    @javierdiazsantana Рік тому +1

    I don't own any Schotts but any decently stitched, good quality leather (Particularly well tanned and resistant hides like horse, steer / cow) being taken care of is going to easily outlast any cheapo faux leather jackets. I own lambskin and cowhide racers, have been rolling around for several years and look better as they age, i also have a calfskin racer and a cowhide double rider but those are in repair (I am repairing them myself and really need to finish them...) I use saddle soap with a brush and water to clean them out and for conditioning you could use the saddle soap as a light conditioner that will not change the color as much, without any water and rubbing it with a dry cloth into the leather. If you want better conditioning use simply hand cream or specialized oils. Still if you didn't have specialized oils you could just rub coconut oil for beauty purposes or stuff and would still work the same, even beef fat or such should work.

    • @heiner71
