Will This 454 Chevy Big Block Put Out More Power Than Our Junkyard 460? - Horsepower S13, E12

- It's Chevy's turn as Mike and Joe build a classic 454 big block engine on a skimpy budget of $2,500. Will it make more horsepower than their recent Ford budget build? The dyno will reveal the answer. Plus, a trip to the annual NHRA Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green, KY.

I bought an old 402 from a buddy and had the heads done to accept 2.25 and 1.88 valves. Put in solid roller 268/272 cam and made way more power than I was expecting on a budget. A mean queen she was, but I had to step it down for the street. Good power is easy to find with the big block Chevy.
Can’t beat old 454
I wish I had the money, because you guys know what your doing. After over 10 years not having a vehicle, I was given a 2002 Kia Sportage and it needs a whole new suspension and tires. I'm driving it until it starts doing the death wooble...lol It's nice having a vehicle since I had close to 40 surgeries on my body....hard to believe, but true. God Bless you guys always like watching motor and car fix up vehicles.
@SuperDave Miorgan It's ok. I can't afford anybody to do the work on my kia. It is still nice work, whom ever does it. God Bless
Mike, you need your own show!!!!!!!!!!!
I miss Joe. He was a great host
What happened to him
Ya we want him back!
Joe and Chuck were good together
Watch Will Ferrel do his Harry Caray skit & then watch this video - they sound similar 🤣
Thanks for sharing! When will the Mopar 440 counterpart be on the show? 😁
Indexing sparkplugs...
😂🤣😂
Next week: magnets around the fuel lines! 👍🏻
And the week after witchdoctor rubs a shrunken head on the carburetors 👺👹🤣
Indexing the plugs is an easy way to pickup a few Hp. Articles and tests on it decades ago. Hp is about paying attention to details.
Surprise, 454 wins cost wise. Is any one really surprised?
460 is going to win without budget constraints. It has a little bit more of a power ceiling, but it costs a lot to get there.
Overall 454 is the better big block choice in most situations. Stock 460 however is a amazing pulling motor its very torquey. 90's era F trucks are nearly indestructible.
I been pushing over 1000 for years on a regular 50 year old BBC block...cheapo white box $350 rods and blemish pistons haha....they are nuts tuff and have 2 tall deck blocks and a short deck spare..sonic checked for .120 over...no wonder it won't pop at .060 over
I love the sound of a Chevy V-8!
I would like to know the compression ratio on each one
These two are such a good combo and pat too. All the power nation guys are great. they're so genuine and nice and they seem that they're just as the same in real life
That would be a 450+ hp engine if you’d have used 781 oval ports instead of truck peanut port heads. Nice build though.
Yea I was thinking come on 781s are $150pr IF they didn't come on it...
Been loving all these LS ...BBC parts fell out to dirt cheap
But that wasn't the point. It was sue what you got and make it work
Yep, and drop a set of large valves in them, and you'd be pushing closer to 500hp!
Super no words to say
Peanut port!
Am in georgia I wish I could get you guys build my 455
Its funny to see them mod these cars back then when they are worth a lot more in stock condition now. 😂
Does anyone know if those were the big oval heads? 781s or 860s? I forget
No those are peanut port heads!
I had 2 -460s and neither came close to the 454
Why did you use peanut ports on yhere insted of oval ports? That would have been nice to see
Because that's what they had and that was the whole point. Budget and use what you have and make it work
@@KingJT80 I get it and it's awesome how well they performed especially against the big block Ford with larger intake ports. I'm currently building a 454 on a budget. Just saying that stock oval iron would have been nice to see over the peanut ports.
Ya I noticed the peanuts too
I love Monte Carlos, I want this car so bad :(
What heads are those?
I have a 73 2 bolt main 454 and want to rebuild on a poor man's budget.
Being a 73 you probably have large oval port already which are better then the ones they used. Around the valve springs is a casting number. Find it and do some research you’ll be able to find out what head they are. If there a large oval port you can change the cam out with something no larger then around .500 lift, headers, intake and carb and you’ll have a hell of an engine for cheap
Only ford would mount a loose wad of rotating mass on the end of a crank nose to balance the crank 🙄😂
Buick 455 can you do Buick next?
That motor you pointed at being a LS was a Ford motor don't know any GM for the front-mounted distributor
Did any ls come with a distributor? Perhaps it's just to make it easy on the dyno?
maybe it has an LS1 Front Drive Distributor Conversion Kit on it!
Bigger cam in the Chevy, acted like it had a bigger cam, on the dyno. Kooky.
That was not a open chamber. Lol
Could have revved that old girl to 5400 rpm. I bet it'd put down 440hp!!!
Probably has an rv cam in it.. probably wouldn't go past five with peanut port heads and an rv camshaft
Terrible ports on those heads
502ci making 425hp? Maybe I heard it wrong. But the 127ci in my Subaru makes more than that. What's goin on.
Thats 425 at the wheels. At the crank it makes more power than that.
@@paulaguilar9147 oh yeah probably alot more, but I just I dunno. I guess I expected more.
@@kidsythe I'm pretty sure they just took a crate engine and didn't change anything on it. If they put better speed parts it would have put out more.
@BigTX77 I guess I gotta say factory output is 300. I couldn't exsplain more it would clearly go over your head.
@BigTX77 my man I wish I could like show you a screenshot or something. Like just Google it like just look it up I can't tell if you're like dumb or what?
Let me guess budget junkyard motors supposed budget build,,,,,now thousands upon thousands of dollars spent,WHERE THE HELL DID THE BUDGET GO???? Worse spending than a politician !
they literally spent 2,300 bucks. wth you on about?
@@dreadnaught688 and then they threw the checkbook out the window to compete with the souped up 460,besides who really needs CHROME PULLEYS?
@@mikemoscato2995 those chrome pulleys are O'Reily specials they ain't. Expensive trust me
They needed to keep the price close hell 4 to 500 spent on BS that 40 bucks should have bought at a junkyard and it made no Hp.
03:45 The biggest mistake they made was using the peanut port heads... Those things are so low on flow that they cut the HP down by a huge percentage... You probably could have made another 50 HP by ditching those heads for the full oval ports
Well they said budget build and use what they have. Going to find them wouldn't have been fair since that's not what they did with the 460
It was about using what you have
Nothing wrong with peanut port heads. Can easily make 500hp with them.
Poor mans budget $2,500? apparently you don't know what a poor man budget is
That's hella cheap for a 454 what do you mean lol
Save your money, indexing spark plugs is a waste of your time and money! Dyno testing has proven it doesn't do a thing for you!
The 460 heads are garbage. You see what happened when you changed heads right?
That is true Chevy did alot more testing with there heads after market to make the fords run.
Am I the only one who doesn't like it when the supposed pro's call an engine the motor? I was taught that a motor is electric and an engine is a mechanical internal combustion system.
Aaaaand you were taught wrong.
The DMV, MOTORcycle, MOTORboat, MOTOR oil, Ford MOTOR company, General MOTORS, Bavarian MOTOR works, and Merriam Webster would also show how sanctimonious whomever "taught" you was.
www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/motor
I never liked using the plugs washers for indexing. Just buy a few sets and you will usually have enough to get good indexing. If you are really worried about that much about flame travel, side gap the plugs.
