I’ve been a 429/460 guy for years and that made me cringe when he said they basically did the same to both. However, the whole reason I switched to the 460 was those big canted valves and large ports. I told my Chevy guy friends, “it’s the only bb Ford that comes close in design to that killer bb Chevy that you guys got!” Lunati also has a great 6000+ cam for the Ford, but still it was good to see them both built (except for the cam install... yikes).

What can I say, I put a 300ci six banger in my 82 mustang, mainly because I was too cheap to buy a complete new front end. It came from the factory with a 200ci six banger, sticking with a six banger was way easier than changing to a 5.0L. ahahaha

Casey West yeah, they can't do that, then the Ford might win, and god knows we can't have that. They did a "budget build-off" between an ls3 and a coyote- got all kinds of aftermarket parts for the ls- bigger cam, higher compression pistons, etc, when for the coyote they took out the mustang's forged crank and replaced it with a cast crank from a truck block, swapped out the mustang cams and swapped them for the truck cams and then called the ls the winner. They literally built the coyote to make less hp than it did stock out of the mustang it originally came out of. Wtf kind of joke is that, you call that an equal comparison? Give me a fkn break. Build a 454 and a 460 with evenly matched parts and do the same with an ls3 and a coyote and see what happens (btw I'm not a Ford guy, but if you're going to do a comparison between built motors, build them similarly so we can see what is actually capable of what).

At a local car show, years ago, there was a GM guy running his mouth about how the "tree fitty" chevy engine was the best thing ever created by man, and how the 302 Ford sucked. I happened to have my little Mustang II there, with a temperary 302 in it, that I had thrown together using some mix matched parts I'd had laying around. I cut the valve reliefs in some shitty badger pistons using an old valve that I'd cut a slot in, and brazed a cutting edge into, then used a hand drill with it to "machine" the reliefs. lol I didn't balance anything, I just threw it together with some new bearings, polished the journals with cloth, etc. CC solid lifter cam, 351W ported heads, performer intake, 600 holley, done. I lovingly referred to it as my grenade engine, and I would frequently tach it to 7500 rpm on a daily basis.
So I told the guy at the show, let's get in our cars, put it in neutral, and hold the tach at 7500 for 2 mins and see if they hold together. He said no fuckin way would I do that. So I got in my car and did it anyway, smiling at him the whole time. After 2 mins, I let it idle again, the motor was fine, still had 60 psi oil pressure, no issues. The Chevy guy had nothing to say, he just turned and walked off. Stock rods, crank, shitty hand cut pistons, etc, lol and it worked great. I ended up running that grenade 302 for 3 years until I got around to building the new race engine for it. I would challenge anyone with a stock 2-bolt 350 shortblock to give it a shot and see how it holds together at 7500 in neutral for 2 minutes. lol

I understand the reasoning behind swapping pistons in the 454 to get the compression to match the 460. I like both engines but clearly the Ford was cheaper and only behind by 21hp.

They used a cylinder head on the 454 that had 320cc intake runners. The 460 had 290cc intake runners. Had they been equal the Ford would have made more hp. They used the stock ultra heavy crank for the Ford. They bought a high dollar lighter weight crank for the Chevrolet.
Got to restrict a Ford motor to keep the Chevrolets competitive.
Been drag racing or either had a street car for almost 30 years. Got to spend more money on a Chevrolet to get the same power as a Ford. The Chevrolet LS has drsstically improved on that problem, but older sbc vs. sbf, or bbc vs. bbf, Ford makes more power per dollar in a big way.

The sbf cylinder heads have far more efficient designs. 20 degree valve angle vs. 23 degree for the sbc. The sbf combustion chambers have better quench design vs. the sbc. The sbf 351 cleveland head is FAR superior to the sbc with 10 degree valve angles. My 351 cleveland 4 barrel heads flowed almost 300 cfm through the intake at .500 lift. A refurbished pair would cost around $1200 complete with quality valves and other hardward. However, any amateur with a Harbor Freight die grinder can watch a couple of UA-cam videos and fix that problem in a couple of hours. Or, just buy a cheap pair of aluminum heads and install good hardware. You might have a few hundred more than the equivalent sbc heads but the sbf heads will be far more efficient at making power. I'll be 70 in August, and only went through auto shop in high school. I did end up overhauling my high school car, a 54' Chevy with a 235 six cylinder after I had graduated. Added a home, butchered up, split exhaust with an Offenhauser, which changed it to a 2 carburetor setup. Eventually bought a used 70', 428 Cobra Jet, Mustang, that broke an intake valve, which totally destroyed the motor. I had to swap that out with a used 390, which allowed me to save money by reusing some of the 428 parts. I eventually got a 76' Pinto which needed an overhaul, the cam was wore out. That engine was the most fun to work on, and turned out great. The last was my 79' F150 with an automatic. What I liked about all of those engines, they had carburetors and distributors. They were just more fun to work with and easier for me. Thanks for keeping that type of engine alive.

Sure is. The 460 is a bad ass engine. I believe it can dominate that 454.

If they gave the 460 as much love as that 454, the numbers would have been a LOT different.

Let's throw more shit into the Chevy because we can't let a FORD win...what a joke

So both had full rebuilds with cam/heads/intake mani and carb? I mean they didn’t talk about the compression but it’s been know the 454 is easier and cheaper to make power

@SBK Stóre you do realize that the 385 series ford is a big block chevy copy ...... Look at the staggered valves. The FE was doomed. A great engine design doesn't last for 50 plus years because its junk........ Mercury marine still makes the BBC. Never saw a 385 series ford single or in multiples in big water racing. The reason??? Pretty simple, the 385 series ford lacks head bolts== long term reliability== no wins!

@@hilleryclifford2367 B.S if the ford was a chevy copy then why wouldn't it have this great head bolt design that you speak of. Remember the 454ss pickups? They were getting out ran by ford lightings with a 351. In 92 the 460 and 454 were almost identical numbers from the factory. Chevy had 10 more hp but fords torque came in at a lower rpm. This was a build totally in chevys favor just admit it

@@jasonamerica7618 ..you're comparing apples to oranges....when the late 70's rolled around the big blocks were detuned and smogged to death. Any small block lightweight engine could outrun them.
