- Out in the yard with the most versatile tool known to mankind.... ZIP TIES. Using zip ties to measure firewood cuts while actively cutting is one of the quickest ways to get the job done.

I cut my first cord with a stick and marker. The following day I added those zipties, saves so much time.

Cut a slit in the middle of the zip tie bag instead of cutting the top off. You grab them by the middle and fold them and pull them out, and you can stick them back in too. And you can throw the bag around and they can't fall out of the bag.
Yes, the next time I buy some I will do that, I have a bunch to use up first!

If you have a bunch of loose ones, you can bundle them together and wrap a smaller zip tie to band them up together. When the bundle gets smaller you tie the zip each time. No bag needed

I put 3 zip ties on the Husqvarna 450 the other day...I have them set for 18". Wow, I can go from cut to cut to cut, no stopping! Such an amazing and simple idea, thanks so much for sharing!
With my blue tape at 2" wide, as long I have the end of the log 'in the blue', my pieces will be 16-18" which is perfect for moms Earth Stove :)

Give it a go if you don't like it no biggie, zip ties are pennies!

Have been using the Magnet/PVC style. After losing #1 in a couple days and #2 two weeks later at $15.00 per,
(Yes, I did paint both Flo-Orange) I tried your suggestion. For $10 I have one on each of three saws (Total time 15 minutes and $3) and seven extra ties in case I need more. Thank you for sharing your ideas. I cut about 20-25 cord of 20" wood a season. This will save a considerable amount of time , money and frustration. Thanks again. Gary, Northern NY

I just got my first chainsaw to clean up after a storm. Your zip tie firewood measure is cheap, easy to install, very fast in use, not able to be laid aside and misplaced/lost and safe. Thanks for the brilliant idea!

My power had is 18" long so I've always used that method, but it's a wasted motion for each round. Can't believe I haven't seen or thought of this before. I'm going out to the shop to tie a couple on right now! Great idea, thanks!

I can see how the ziptie method would be super useful for those of us who only have one saw and we use it for limbing as well. The ties would not be much of a hinderance compared to a rigid attachment. Excellent Idea!

It’s interesting seeing different ways people measure their rounds for firewood. I’m blessed to have a career in residential construction and can eye ball 16 about 9/10 times.

Nice. Love the idea of the strain relief sleeve.
It's on my to do list to add some ties to my saw for when I start cutting for next winter. I think I will probably angle mine forward a bit so that they aren't as far from the cutting part of the saw. Even if they are in front of the dogs a bit it won't matter as they will happily bend back a bit.

That has been a really good system that has worked well for you!!😀😀
When I cut lengths at home. I take the skidder and grab a bucket full of logs and lay them out and even them up on one end. Then I use the power head witch is also 16 inches long and then I buck all the logs In one cut.
When you stop over I'll show you my setup. I usually lay out 3 or 4 buckets full at a time before I cut them. Then after I get them bucked
If I'm careful I can grab the wood and stack it without ever touching it by hand at all. But you have to be really smooth with the skidder or you can knock the pile over really easy.

Ha curb feelers…that’s a blast from the past. Back when cars were tanks, gas cans were simple, chainsaws were heavy, and no one bought water in a bottle.

Just tarped my wood here in Oregon. We have had this summer, .04 inches of rain since June 21 in Salem. We had as high temp at 117 degrees. 40 days 90+ temp.The oak I cut from the February ice storms is 24% on the moisture meter. Douglas fir at 17%. Rain coming next weekend. Still warm 70's and 80's. Unusual to have oak about ready in less than a year. But this has been a hot, very dry summer for us with low humidity. I like the zip tie measure method. I usually use a 16" broom handle, tape measure, or hand saw or chalk to make a mark.

Last video you said it was nice to stack out of the tractor bucket, less bending. Ohio Wood Burner bought a second trailer to load the splits into as they come off the machine. He can stack out of the trailer with the second trailer available for deliveries. His thought is that he's to old to pick it off the floor to stack.

No, it is because it is very easy to see against the brown/grey/black/green in the woods/ wood yard.
Great tip. I seen a device that attaches to the handle that uses a red dot laser. I would think it would be hard to see especially in sunny conditions. I myself carry a small pocket tape measure and a short piece of a yellow lumber crayon and go down the log or piece of wood and mark my cuts. On another note I recently purchased a Oregon 72EXJ chain to try out and so far I really like it. I always ran Stihl chain. I also purchased a Husqvarna X Cut and I'm running it now and like it as well.
There are a lot of ways to measure as long as you are happy with your method, that is great!

Hi Chris. I’ve used the bar method to measure for many years. With my 16” or 18” bar, it’s very easy to do. I actually made a video about it. I can keep within 1/4 or 1/2 inch of 16 consistently using the method. And it’s become muscle memory at this point. Cut/measure/cut. -Chad #purplecollarlife

I've used pick spray paint on my tools of many years.
It was because of my son. He was the "absent minded professor". He has a brilliant mind and loved building things and helping me around the farm... however, he would just leave things wherever he had been.
Pink on the tools helped me A LOT in tool recovery!

Very few people care as long as you don't get under 14" or over 18", 15-17" is where I try to stay as much as possible.

Thank you so much. Don't know why i didn't think of this it's so easy. I was using a HFT trailer alignment magnets that the foam ball had fallen off. But the magnet is crap and it always falls off and like you stated, You have to go down the length making the marks and then come back and cut. Thanks again.
