When I lived in the mountains of Colorado I would ask how much wood my customers wanted and a lot of times when I pulled up the would say is that all my wood 🪵 became the last guy only had the wood loosely thrown into their truck. Needless to say they called me back several times for more. I gave them what I said I would. Full measure.

@@InTheWoodyard Not sure the size of your bed is. Mine is a 5 3/4 and can hold 1/4 cord without fear of any pieces of the lip of the bed. A face cord is VERY well rounded and usually takes a little building to guarantee it all holds in the bed.

We sell 1/3 a cord for $100. Additional costs for stacking/ hauling withing 25 miles also applied. Amazes me how many people just want to buy 1/3 - 2/3 of a cord of wood. Not everyone is burning 3+ cords a year

So he will pay me to provide a high quality product that he can depend on that will work for his entertaining and leisure time. $100,000 to him is like .01 to us. So.......

I tell them all the little bin I put together for my own wood to burn is nothing. Tell them all they should check your channel out. Mine bin is made out of some heavy duty plastic pallets stacked in and 6' tall 8' wide should be 16' long when it gets full. Thank you much for the idea!

Thank goodness all our wood for our woodstove comes from our property. We heat with it quite often in the winter, when it's especially cold in Central Texas.
@@InTheWoodyard Yes sir it does at times get below zero. When we had the big freeze 2 years ago it got below zero and then last winter for a short time it was. It usually warms back up but during the big freeze when we all lost power it lasted about 5 days in a row. Many peoples pipes froze but we built our house with Pex and all was OK.
Glad you can do that. Back in the mid 80s my dad would cut wood and leave it out in the woods and charge people $15 a rick for them to come pick it up. He sold a lot of wood that way, but it was awful hard work for such little money. Nowadays people are charging $60 and you pick it up on the road side. That’s rural Arkansas for you. Location really makes a difference. Last winter I saw a company online in a large city in the north east that was selling wood for $400 for 1/4 cord of kiln dried oak.
I also make firewood for sale as a side hustle being a self employed jack of all trades and I admire your work ethics and attention to customer service while standing your ground and charging enough to make a decent living. I believe that when you take pride in making a high quality product you should charge accordingly.
where I live in Canada there are lots of lakes and every lake has a campground and almost every one has at least one or 2 road side campfire wood stands, little bundles of wood usually 8 or 9 bucks with a can or cash box. pay on the honor system, they sell out several times a week, its a great side hustle for people who dont mind doing some hard work processing the bundles and its way cheaper than buying the firewood from the campsite itself.. the great ones have a few large pieces a couple bits of cedar for kindling and a chunk of birch bark or sheet of newspaper in the middle to light the fire with.
Hi Chris!! Everyone says that you can't season oak in one summer. But the oak that you are selling was green in the log this spring and now it's dry enough to burn already. It will usually dry in from each side about a inch each summer. So by splitting it small like you did has allowed it to be dry right now. Take care my friend!!😀😀 Logger Al

I have been chucking wood into the back of pickups for 54 years (since I was 7) and have never broke a window, neither have either of my brothers and we all sell firewood, so maybe not for everyone.
I always charge more for stacking I learned that back in the mid 80s . I got out of fire wood for a few years but I am fixing to get back into it . I used to take premium wood to high end restaurants. Always had to stack for them .

In the mid-west it is what EVERYONE calls 1/3 of a cord. Terms vary from region to region. There is also rik, rank, row, single stack, triple stack, truck load, logger cord and bush cord. Down south ALL soft drinks are cokes up here we call it soda. So it varies.

As part of the forestry course I attended passing the Scalers exam is necessary( written and practical) as well as being check scaled of 1000 cords by a license holder. Cut and split firewood is the easiest product to scale and hardest is a pile of tree length hardwood pushed up by a skidder.
How do you go about legally hauling wood that far? Not sure where you are from, but I’m thinking here in Wisconsin, there are laws against hauling across county lines

We burnt wood for years and i took chimney out .We got tired of bringing in wood in the weather and bringing in insects and dirt.You and your brother could go around the world for the high prices you all charge
In big cities (Chicago) a full cord goes for $700-800 lots of people and no trees an hour west of me a full cord sells for $150 ..lots of trees no people...everything is relative to where you are.
I live in an area of SoCal that is prone to termite infestation. For that reason I am hesitant to store firewood for an extended period of time, my area dedicated for storage is approximately 1' from the house in a 3 walled space, do you have any tips or recommend any insecides that might mitigate/eliminate this problem?
We do not have termites here but I would put down plastic on the ground then metal or bricks then some kind of wood runners and then maybe more plastic then the firewood???

You obviously do not know more that just your market area. In Big cities like Chicago, DC, Denver firewood goes for $700-800 for a cord all the time. Lots of people no trees equals big money and lots of trees and no people equals no money. Simple supply and demand.....your market is not every ones market.
It's nice you can get those prices where you are. It would never fly here in the Ozarks. People here sell ricks of wood for $70-80... One question, is it a face cord (8x4x24 inches ) or a rick, which is a third of a cord (8x4x16 inches)? When I moved here I didn't know what a rick of wood is and had to look it up. A face cord is half a cord and a rick is a third since a full cord is 8x4x4.

I live in Ireland and I'm trying to learn how to stack & store firewood well, and you talk about the importance of wood breathing, we have a lot of wet weather and I don't know if leaving wood to dry in the open and mostly uncovered will work well for here, would it be alright to only cover the top or for wetter climates would you advise to keep the wood somewhere sheltered/ more covered or in a shed? I recently started volunteering with a charity that clears invasive species, and this year we are currently venturing into cutting, splitting and stacking wood from cherry laurel and this is all fairly new to me so I'm trying to learn as much as possible. If the wood is kept in tonne bags im not sure it will dry correctly and I want to be assertive when talking about what we need to do, but because I'm worried leaving the wood out in Irish weather, which can be unpredictable and very consostently wet most of the year, in a clear space where it can potentially get sun and not be blown over might be a bit of a task, so an open shed might be the safest bet.
What little I have experienced over the past few years is most private sellers ruin things for businesses, until trust is established. They are so accustomed to buying at bottom dollar. Also, due to most states have no firm guidelines or price ranges, people take advantage of the firewood sector, usually to rip people off. Its always been a free-for-all in Ohio, even with some businesses like tree services selling wood in " bulk cords" with a loader. Right.. too bad Ohio says sell by the ton with a scale. But it makes a great deal for people at $150-$180 a "cord" to re-sell 😆 I just recently put up $175 for a 1/3 and not one bite. My product absolutely better but its the market. So, whatever, I'll use it.

If the total mileage was 180 (90 each way), you lost money. Federal mileage rate is 65.5 cent per mile which would be $120.00. It means you drove three hours for $20. Your time is worth more than that, charge more. He doesn't mind paying you because it's cheap.
Most people that heat with wood have other reasons for using wood...Off the grid heat sources are one. Self satisfaction of having it as warm as they want. Nothing feels a s good as wood heat. The exercise they get making the firewood. The smell of a wood fire. The sound of the crackling fire. Sitting by the fire enjoying the heat, sound, smell and sight of the flames. Money is not everything.

Yup, in the cities with huge populations and no trees firewood is very high and in rural areas with lots of trees and few people...it is cheap!

Hey Chris, to make like easier when I have to pull wood out of my pick up, I bring a hard rake with me. Use it to pull it all to me when out of reach.

In big cities (Chicago) a full cord goes for $700-800 lots of people and no trees an hour west of me a full cord sells for $150 ..lots of trees no people...everything is relative to where you are.
That amount for a face cord delivered that far is totally fair Chris you are always fair to all your customers. Here we go its wood delivery time!!

I live in an area of SoCal that is prone to termite infestation. For that reason I am hesitant to store firewood for an extended period of time, my area dedicated for storage is approximately 1' from the house in a 3 walled space, do you have any tips or recommend any insecides that might mitigate/eliminate this problem?
We do not have termites here but I would put down plastic on the ground then metal or bricks then some kind of wood runners and then maybe more plastic then the firewood???

You obviously do not know more that just your market area. In Big cities like Chicago, DC, Denver firewood goes for $700-800 for a cord all the time. Lots of people no trees equals big money and lots of trees and no people equals no money. Simple supply and demand.....your market is not every ones market.
It's nice you can get those prices where you are. It would never fly here in the Ozarks. People here sell ricks of wood for $70-80... One question, is it a face cord (8x4x24 inches ) or a rick, which is a third of a cord (8x4x16 inches)? When I moved here I didn't know what a rick of wood is and had to look it up. A face cord is half a cord and a rick is a third since a full cord is 8x4x4.
It is different everywhere.... we call 1/3 of a cord a face cord...1 row of 16" pieces stacked 4'high x 8'long
Greetings from Hokkaido, Japan. Do you leave those massive wood piles made from pallets uncovered all year round? Or at least spring/summer/fall. So it gets wind/rain/sunshine? So uncovered with the rain will help it season? I have similar set up, wondering if I should at least cover top with big tarp. Cheers.
I did leave them uncovered last year but we had very little snow....I will cover a lot of them ( only the tops) this fall.

I live in Ireland and I'm trying to learn how to stack & store firewood well, and you talk about the importance of wood breathing, we have a lot of wet weather and I don't know if leaving wood to dry in the open and mostly uncovered will work well for here, would it be alright to only cover the top or for wetter climates would you advise to keep the wood somewhere sheltered/ more covered or in a shed? Yes, keep it OFF the ground and just cover the top, that should be the best besides building a shed that has air flow too. (OPEN SIDES)
@@InTheWoodyard Thanks for the reply! I recently started volunteering with a charity that clears invasive species, and this year we are currently venturing into cutting, splitting and stacking wood from cherry laurel and this is all fairly new to me so I'm trying to learn as much as possible.
If the wood is kept in tonne bags im not sure it will dry correctly and I want to be assertive when talking about what we need to do, but because I'm worried leaving the wood out in Irish weather, which can be unpredictable and very consostently wet most of the year, in a clear space where it can potentially get sun and not be blown over might be a bit of a task, so an open shed might be the safest bet.
What little I have experienced over the past few years is most private sellers ruin things for businesses, until trust is established. They are so accustomed to buying at bottom dollar.
Also, due to most states have no firm guidelines or price ranges, people take advantage of the firewood sector, usually to rip people off. Its always been a free-for-all in Ohio, even with some businesses like tree services selling wood in " bulk cords" with a loader. Right.. too bad Ohio says sell by the ton with a scale. But it makes a great deal for people at $150-$180 a "cord" to re-sell 😆
I just recently put up $175 for a 1/3 and not one bite. My product absolutely better but its the market. So, whatever, I'll use it.
The market in any area IS the market, so in a given area you are compared to everyone...good and bad.

If you’re buying firewood it’s time to switch.. wood is almost the most expensive way to heat now .
Most people that heat with wood have other reasons for using wood...Off the grid heat sources are one. Self satisfaction of having it as warm as they want. Nothing feels a s good as wood heat. The exercise they get making the firewood. The smell of a wood fire. The sound of the crackling fire. Sitting by the fire enjoying the heat, sound, smell and sight of the flames. Money is not everything.
