Another student at the Forestry College where I earned my Scalers license asked the Instructor what is a face cord? The Instructor sat down , waited for silence and said,, face cord is only a word invented by dishonest firewood sellers to make customers satisfied with less then they paid for. He suggested that would be a good exam question . This is by far the best video out of many l have seen about firewood, thanks.

A true "Face" cord is half of a cord.
So 2X4X8, or 64 cubic feet.
      Pretty simple to understand.

128 cubic feet any way you measurer as long as it makes 128 cubic feet 4 by 4 by 8 feet equals a cord of wood!! nuff said

@@mikeanders7542 i can agree with you on that, i have measured out truck beds stack the wood as tight as possible then multiply till i get my 128 cubic feet! 4x4x8 just makes it easier to measure and you get familiar with the look.

Spot on! Thanks. Many people getting ripped off. When I show up with 1/2 cord in an F350 they say they didn't want a full cord, only 1/2 cord. When they learn that it is an actual 1/2 cord they are happy but also very angry at their previous suppliers.

I grew up in a house heated by firewood in the 70"s & 80"s. My dad and I spent all year in NJ cutting wood for the winter. I was basically an all year job. But we also sold wood on the side. My dad always said a true cord was stacked 4x4x8, which equals 128 cf. I couldn't even begin to tell you how many cord of wood I cut and split growing up. Mostly with an axe and maul.

Really good explanation Brad. A lot of people don’t have a clue about what a cord is. I can’t believe you need to have a permit to sell firewood. Just another revenue stream for the government, smh. I left upstate NY and moved south 42 years ago. I was glad to get away from a lot of that government control. Unfortunately I think it’s creeping towards NC.

I was surprised that there were different names for a cord of wood because I thought a cord of wood was a volume, which your video confirmed it is. Learning a face cord is a third of a cord is vital for accurate ordering. Thank you!

Great vid👍. Here in SW Missouri I deal with the same confusion. The most common term here for a 1/3 of a cord is a “rick”. Most people call and want to order wood by the truckload and then I have to clarify things. I have also noticed that the people who heat with wood and will buy a cord or more they know exactly what they want. It’s the customers who want a rick or 2 for a fire place or a backyard fire pit that aren’t sure. And several times I have showed up to deliver a rick or two and stack it the customers are surprised by how much extra wood is there, which after an explanation of volume means they were cheated in the past. Keep up the good work Brad😆

Great video. Takes me back to when I was a kid. My father ran a firewood business as a side hustle. It's how I earned money as a kid. We sold around 300 chord a year. Cut, split, and pile all summer. Then deliver all fall and winter. 600 chord of firewood piled in a field was quite a sight. That's right-600chord. 300 chord dried for a year and the other 300 set to dry for a year. Great memories.

Good video. There is a lot of confusion with people. I’ve sold firewood and I’ve bought it at times too. There are way too many sellers that either don’t know or don’t care what a full cord is. The next biggest topic of confusion caused by bad or unknowing sellers would be what exactly seasoned firewood is.

Well done, your explanation was on the money. I have been cutting and splitting wood since I was 16 helping my Dad and Uncles at our hunting cabin in NYS. Then I was cutting it to heat my family home, about 4 years ago I had my hip replaced & 62 years young now it's not as easy to get fire wood anymore. So I started ordering some fire wood, it's very hard to find someone who knows what a cord of firewood is.

Thanks for this video Brad. I almost didn't click on it because I know what a cord is, and I know what a face cord is. Of course, that was before I watched your video and found out I have been wrong for 20 years. I was sure that a face cord was 1/2 of a cord. So all these years I have been getting a cord delivered and thought the guys was being generous because after filling 2 face cord holders, I always had some extra. Ha Ha, joke was on me.
I am about to order firewood and have called around to get prices here in Northern New Jersey. You mention in your video that you like the chance to educate your customers and try not to embarrass them. I think I will have to make sure whoever I get the wood from is educated and will try not to embarrass them! You have a great style and I appreciate the content. Subscribed.

Many people in my area try to claim a level truck bed as a full cord, and unfortunately also price it as that. Often it will even actually be a loosely thrown in, level truck bed, claimed as a full cord!

Many decades ago, I pretty much made a third of my living in Sanders County, MT harvesting and selling firewood, licensed with the county with the low income energy assistance program. I cut a lot of fir trees that were dead and standing dead beetle killed lodgepole pine. It was seasoned by the time late autumn came around. I named my price, got an order from the county office, made a delivery, had the customer sign a form that it was delivered and were happy, gave the form to the office and was paid within a week. Yes, I split it down to stove sizes. A lot of work, but I was my own boss and I was young. Those days are long gone.

One of the struggles I have with selling firewood is that I'm honest with my cord, and even give a bit extra. The problem is that I'm competing with people who will deliver what they call a "cord", but is maybe 25% less. They charge less then I could and customers see the lower price of a cord and think they're getting a better deal.

We mostly get logs that I haul home on my 5x10' trailer, pulled behind my 2001 Grand Cherokee and some rounds from our local Fire Chief that's clearing a large area of his property that has a lot of dead Ash trees. Been bucking/and splitting my own trees for firewood for decades and you’re correct, many firewood dealers are dishonest. They won’t even pack pack the wood tightly into a 4-4-8 stoat, thinking you won’t notice. Quite often they need to make a second trip to make up for the shortage. My experience was with a bunch of good old boys who had probably been screwing over ignorant customers for years. How many ways can you represent 4-4-8 dimensions? I had never heard of a face cord before. I only knew ricks and cords. Thank you for putting together a nice video to educate the masses. In my current world up in the mountains of Northern California, it would be a rare firewood dealer who would try to rip off his public.

I, too, have been harvesting and burning firewood for 35 years. And selling it to the members of the local gun club that drive past my property to get into the club. It was always known what the dimensions were for the varied terms. But nowadays, trucks don't normally come with 8' beds, and sideboards would be needed with the 8' beds. I simply built a 8' ×4' ×4' with a slanted roof and 2 dividing walls. They took what they wanted and paid me when they saw me, as I hand split wood in the alley next to the R.R. CROSSING entering the gun club. Typical homeowners nowadays aren't aware of these important factors, so thanks for your detailed information!

Brad your true on your words . Back in my wood days we delivered 3 full cords in a tandem dump truck patch and round off to it. We cut into 2 lenght 12” for the cook house stove and 16” for heating stove . Your very true about a pick - up take a cord off wood . It’s can be done went dry , BUT BUT you got to put high sideboard on the pick - up . My wet yellow birch a full cord might take it 1 ton or 3500 . Good luck on your axle weight on the license road . Here there highway inspection will be on to you for weight on your truck from 3500 and up , plus weight license on your trailer . Here we pay for weight to haul onto your axle . We call it’s axle weight , so went we haul max axle weight we paid for it’s to haul . A lot put minus weight on trailer about its less money , but if the highway inspection weight your load it’s will cost you $$$ in weight over your permit . Back in the wood a big timber use to take 1 1/4 tons pick back out to the landing .it’s a load with no B s..t down off a mtns . Take cord and 1/4 at 8’x 4” long put a cable around the centre, pull it’s tight up behind the jack and drive it’s straight down a mtns . See if your nerve as steel in the mtns off Newfoundland ca. Brad your right A CORD in USA and CANADA are the SAME . 8’ long , 4 ‘ height and 4’ wide . How you want to cut its up , you can pick a # 12 “ , 16” , 24 “ and so on . Brad great video, if your buddy take 10 full cords , you will make a hole into the wood yard for sure . Be careful and god bless to you and the family .

Just started our 17th winter using an outdoor wood boiler to heat our home. I mostly cut, haul, split, and stack my own firewood. I’m 61 now. As u know firewood is work. I’m considering buying firewood in the future. What do u sell a load with ur 7 x14 dump trailer loosely stacked? I live in Minnesota. There’s a guy here that sells wood. He gets about $200 for that amount. Mostly ash.

A standard size pickup bed, slightly mounded is appx a face cord. If you really mound it, you can fit a half a cord. I like to pick up my own wood, and that's what I get when I throw a measured face cord in there. (I don't have anywhere for a vendor to dump off a load here, and rather than waste his time- and clog up the road- while we transfer the wood to MY truck, or haul it out back 1 cart at a time, it's just easier to go get it)
I believe "Rick" is another term for face cord. More common in the South and parts of the midwest.
Sometimes the confusion goes both ways. I ordered a face cord of mixed premium hardwood for grilling from a guy advertising green/fresh cut firewood, with a list of available species. Cherry, hickory, and sugar maple is what I asked for. He turned out to be a tree service with a nice side gig. He shows up to my house with a dump truck! One of those small ones they use to haul mulch and stuff. By the time we emptied it out, my pickup was piled 3-4 feet above the roof, and squatting hard, lol. He said that's a face cord- and charged me as such. I ended up filling TWO 1 facecord woodhaven racks! (one of which I had to order because of this, lol) So, sometimes it works out. And yes, I DO keep a sharp eye out for his ad on marketplace, lol. ( it was seriously nice quality wood- I'd gladly buy again even if I knew I would get a measured face.)

I’ve been cutting and stacking firewood since I was 12 yr old which is about 50years. I’ve on occasion purchased firewood and have made it absolutely clear that I wanted a full cord 4’x4’x8’, 128 cubic foot and had them show up with pickup with 2’ side boards lose stack and mounded and advised them that what the brought me was not a full cord, I paid for a full cord and I expected a full cord and to prove it I stacked it with their help and sure as shit it was barely 2/3 of a cord so it it proves that there are those who are taking advantage of most people and there are those selling firewood who don’t understand what a full cord is either.

Awesome video ! Very true there is so many people that really have no idea what a cord is, I don't deliver much people just come pick it up, and they think they can put a cord on a half ton truck, until I tell them they probably won't get it all on in 2 trips, you really have to do just as you did so they understand, Great Job !

After 3 seasons heating almost exclusively with wood, this has been the clearest explanation of measurement - both wood and trailer that I’ve found. Thank you! Now which wood is the best to burn? And how much control would those selling firewood typically have over the kind of wood they sell?

    • @FirewoodattheFurnace

Many people think Oak is the only firewood. It’s not… it has good heat value but takes the longest to dry. Locust is even better but also takes 1-2 years to dry. Maple, Cherry, Ash, are all great choices as well. Best to burn would depend on what your using it for. Primary heat for your home? You want BTU’s, supplemental heat for your home or ambience then BTU’s and/or a nice flame may be important. Outside camp fires, you want a nice bright flame. Oak and locust for example burn hot but not a very bright flame. Others burn nearly as hot and have a nicer flame. Hope this helps and thanks for watching

@@FirewoodattheFurnace Hickory has high BTU output compared to others. It does leave a little more ash but none the less is good for heat. Plus, all of the scrap pieces you can save for smoking. Same with Cherry and Apple if you prefer. You can add the smaller branches to sell by cutting them into chips for smoking or for arts and crafts or cutting boards if you have the time. Nothing is wasted. 😉

Thanks for the video. I often heard the term 'cord of wood' and did ask once. The explanation I received was so many feet of 4" x 2" (Aussie talk; not 2 x 4 for you Yanks); I could never visualize that. Your explanation 8' x 4' x4' finally painted the picture for me - thanks again.

Thanks for the full explanation. I just recently had an inground firepit installed so I needed to make sure I understood the measurements of how much wood I needed to buy. Maybe one small detail you can add to future videos for the math impaired. You can tell approximately how many pieces of wood to be expected in a cord or face cord. Overall, I really enjoyed the video.

I've noticed in our area people selling "facecords" of wood which measure 4' x 8' x 12", which is 75% of a facecord. I've been sharing that information on my channel. A facecord of wood stacked loosely required approximately 60 cubic feet of space.

Hey Brad. Thank you. Very informative, and I like your presentation; direct and straight to the point. I myself am a city boy don’t know anything about wood except how to start a fire in a fireplace. So thank you sir. I’m merely looking to buy firewood for a fireplace for romantic evenings during the winter. That b ing said I’m thinking I’ll probably just need a third of a cord. Do they sell smaller quantities or would that even be worth it since this is Christmas and we’re looking at January and February to go. Again, I really appreciate the video and your information but especially the way you presented it. Thank you Sir.

I ordered 3 cords from one guy. His first delivery he said was three cords. I stacked and measured and it wasn’t quite 2 cords. It took him three trips before he got it right. I can’t imagine how many people he has ripped off. Where in Maryland are you?

Good to see this. However, I live in the UK. We don't have measurements like that here. A cord of firewood there is like a pint of beer here. Glass full, if not it is not a full pint. Here firewood is by the dump trailer or the builders bag. £70 for a builders bag of ash. In all honesty, 2 builders bags don't evaluate to even a full face cord. I try to cut and split my own firewood, but when I need to buy, I look at USA and realize how much more you get there for your money. What do you charge for a full cord? I have a friend who has a wood burner who simply buys wood from the supermarket. He has gas central heating in the house also. He likes to keep the wood fire going through winter because he likes the heat better than from the radiators. Just burning 3-4 hours every evening. He told me he has spent £2000 on kiln dried firewood this year! Plus kindling! I was shocked. A small amount of searching, chainsaw bucking and splitting only takes a few days a year for me, and sometimes I buy a bit, like £200 for 2 or 3 builders bags to help fill my woodstore, but spending so much on a small amount of firewood seems unproductive.
