Fun injoke: Bo once made a joke in the "green room" with some comedians(the video is on UA-cam) where he started talking about how his favourite comedian (Hans Teeuwen) did a scetch about a black sockpuppet. Another comedian immediately responded with "already I don't like it" and without missing a beat Bo responds "ok, ok, it's a white sock". I have no idea if Socko being white is a nod to that joke, or just a coincidence... But personally I think it's too big of a coincidence
In the same show, when talking about why there's a lot of ironic detachment in his comedy, he answered that he doesn't really value what he thinks as much, because no-one (not even him) wants to hear how a 20 year old thinks the world works.
So he waited 10 years and did exactly that.

I know its late, but That Funny feeling really needs to be watched within the conext of the special. Even though the song is amazing as an insight into disacociation, you have to know a bit about the circumstances of the performer for it to really click.

I think keeping the lights etc is meant to enforce how “Bo” character is still completely in control of the narrative.
Pretty confident this is it. The character being played is an authority. He's telling you, the viewer, how the world works much like educational systems do. They're the authoritative figures above us as we grow and develop. And Socko is when we grow up and learn that that isn't completely the truth that we were taught. "Bo" was passively dismissive of Socko after giving time for Socko to speak out, and then shut him up with threats to keep themselves in power. "Bo" was in control the whole time and held that control over Socko, only to reinforce it when Socko wouldn't fall in line.
What really impresses me about this one is that Bo isn't afraid to make himself the villain towards the end. When it comes to the kinds of sociopolitical issues that Socko is talking about, a lot of... shall we say lower-melanin folks get really insecure at the idea that they might be seen as the "bad guy" and so they act out in response to that. But Bo's willing to represent the power structure in order to make his point.

“It’s no one’s responsibility to educate you but yourself.” I think my biggest problem with the education system isn’t just that it fails to educate us on so many things, but that in many areas it is actively responsible for spreading MISEDUCATION. The toxic cocktail of poorly designed, purely test focused curricula mixed with just straight up propaganda means in some areas, many people are coming out of school knowing less about the world than they might have learned simply by living life as a somewhat curious person.
Beyond that, the way kids are taught actively discourages them from exploring subjects any more than they need to to get a good grade on a test. So much curiosity and creativity gets squashed by the industrialized test-taking machine kids are forced to inhabit that many kids graduate with no interest in learning more about the world because they’ve been conditioned to hate learning.
Exactly my thoughts. Why start our kids with info we know is false. Then they have to unlearn all the false bullshit we were taught and passed on for no reason.

The big punchline reveal is when they start singing the last chorus. Like, "you can keep your mouth shut if you want to stay out of the box...THAT IS HOW THE WORLD WORKS!" Because when you get right down to it, that right there is exactly how the world works.

In this song Bo represents world power and all the wrong-doing in the world, the sock represents society. As soon as the sock opened it's mouth to reveal the truth, Bo tried to shut him down and threatened to silence him, and the sock had no choice but to obey. i’m pretty sure it’s more along the lines of bo representing white people with privilege and power, and socko represents an oppressed individual. the pseudo “wanting to help” while forcing oppressed groups to explain their issues over and over to the privileged. who say they want to help and then get mad when said oppressed individuals happen to be upset when white people don’t understand.

One thing I like about Bo Burnham (that I think you can see in this song pretty well) is that he doesn’t resolve the conflict for you. He puts it out there in a funny, cynical, and kinda extreme way to make you notice the conflict, then you have to figure it out for yourself.
that is the best thing about comedy in general, along with entertainment. They are here to put our world in perspectives so we can decide what to do with the information. I think a lot of them(comedians/actors) have said they are society's mirror, so not necessarily the right people to listen to in debate but do offer truths or ways of thinking about things without burdening you with trying to convince you their opinion is the right side to be on, but rather points of interest we should be focused on so you can form your own opinion on it

As much as I want to see you guys dissect another clip from Inside, the special hits so much harder when you don't know what's coming. I do hope you react to the full thing. You guys actually have a real discussion about everything going on: lyrics, melody, lighting, camera, etc. Love it.
Critical Race Theory is about how laws can enforce racist systems without being explicitly racist. Things like poll taxes making it harder for impoverished ex slaves to vote after reconstruction, or sentencing discrepancies between Crack and Cocaine. You really don't encounter it unless you are a lawyer, or far along in law school. Right wingers coopted the word to basically mean teaching any history that addressed race.
My reading is that you have Bo playing the part of the villian. This villain is a nice, affable, rich white dude that talks about working together and cooperation, and he even brings in Socko to be the voice of the marginalized people. And once he starts talking about all this truth. Bo smiles and nods, because he isn't threatened yet. But the moment Socko steps out out line, and demands that the Bo character actually have a little accountability and question his comforting position of privilege, he will crack down on that. Demand that he shut up and behave, call him sir, vote (Whops, not vote, that's not the sketch, that's the real world), and ultimately silences Socko anyways, breaking his promise.
You gotta figure that since the special is a reflection of 2020, and where this song falls, this song must reflect on around the time the George Floyd protests kicked off, which adds a lot of super uncomfortable subtext that...spot on.
Also worth mentioning, the whole, "Separating the workers from the means of production" is straight up, textbook Marxism, and "Private Property is Theft" is a lone from Proudhon, or the, "Father of Anarchism". He is taking a side, and that side thinks the Democrats are far-right.
yup. the guy wants to be seen as an ally. he's comfortable with you speaking out. he's even good with things improving for others, theoretically. the second he's no longer able to be seen as the good guy though, and there's any chance of him having to sacrifice the smallest of things, he will use his power to beat you back into submission, and even after he does he'll still destroy you.

Yes to everything you said. One thing that I always think is so interesting about this song that I rarely see anyone mention is that the beginning, before Socko appears, is basically just this idealistic ode to socialism. I think it always gets left behind because it has that Sesame Street vibe and the Socko parts are thematically meatier, but he didn’t include the beginning just as a placeholder until we could get to the rest.
In like 90 seconds, we go from “the world can only work when everything works together” and “[everyone] gives what they can and takes what they need” to “the world is built with blood” and “genocide the natives, say you got to it first”
It definitely layers in some other systemic social issues, but at its core this song is straight up one of the harshest critiques of capitalism I’ve ever heard.
And lets not gloss over the fact that Socko is literally a sock puppet.

Bo used this song to illustrate three different ways the world works...physical, geopolitical, and interpersonal...and that's genius.
I love the silent reactions during the first half: Dre nodding along like "This is too happy, I know some shit's about to flip", and De nodding to the beat, appreciating the jam.
Bo represents the wealthy cooperate heads who pretend to support the working class. They only want the esthetic of making a change. Socko represents the people who work for these cooperations who get too loud. Bo is showing the power these people hold over us. Socko can only survive if he is on someones hand(working). So when Bo asks socko his opinion, Bo gets upset when he is told he isnt doing enough. Bo doesnt want to make meaningful changes because it effects his bottom dollar. So socko is given a choice, stop bringing attention to bo and go along with it or get canned. And in the end, socko is still taken away because he has no power.
The sheer indignation on behalf of Socko towards the end was great

I recommend Comedy from Inside. Preceded by the shorter song, Content, this is the introduction to the special where he’s kind of orienting the audience to where he’s coming from.
If you can find Content, it would be cool to do both of them together since Content is less than 2 minutes.

CRT is just the idea that we need to consider how race factors in when talking about how the economy or government or the law works. it's only controversial because there are people who desperately don't want their kids to learn how to think critically about the world.

I think he signed on to do sesame street right after inside came out. He was supposed to play larry bird in the new show on HBO I believe but he couldn't because of schedule conflicts or something. I THINK. I could be mixing stuff up here.

He'd probably already written the sesame street songs by the time he started making Inside. But it seems he now been signed on to act in the sesame street movie too, which might be the scheduling conflicts as you said.

So it's watching stuff on UA-cam and letting the day pass so I can try again tomorrow. Watching you two engage with something new, and different from what yous were expecting, talking about how you relate to it has really helped today. My struggles aren't the same as Bo Burnhams, but there's some heavy similarities in how it looks. You twos compassion and care in talking about these things really touched me. Talking about all manner of real things in a measured and authentic way, honestly it's medicine.

Is this the kind of thing you typically go deeper into on your podcast? Most reactors will not engage this song on anywhere near the level you did, sometimes it’s because Americans are politically illiterate and they have no idea wtf is happening here lol, or they’re afraid.

1) The MLK bar is very VERY *NOT* what CRT is. The song over all is also not what CRT is, but conceptually it’s closer. Not close, closer. Basically 0% of the people you hear talk about CRT, have any idea whatsoever what it is. It’s embarrassing.
2) This song is a theatrical performance of White liberal hegemony (White, not white, so if people could please not @ me for being racist, that’d be swell lol), and it’s creative but not a unique analysis at all. What’s amazing- and I don’t really know how to describe this- what’s amazing is the transparent, brazen stealth of it.

He goes into more depth on what Bo was talking about here. Some other good socialist, philosophy, and history channels for this stuff: azurescapegoat, Viki1999, Then & Now, and Plastic Pills.
Political indifference and Apathy are widespread in not just American society, but I can see why we would be the most noticed in that area, considering our standing with the world.
I would say fear of politics is much lower compared to the amount of people who just don't care. You can't fear something you put no thought or emotion into, at least thats how IT died so that must be true here too lol

Some are so tribal in their politics they won't compromise on shit. Others feel powerless because the way the system is set up, it feels like no matter who we vote for, that person will fuck us. The latter part making up the majority of the reason behind the apathy. Damned if you do damned if you don't.

Ive been a Bo fan since 2010, so Ive been following his development for a while, and pretty much in order of release.
It's so interesting to watch you discover Bo together for the first time and "out of order", as it were.
There are so many little details from past shows that you comment on that tickle me bc I know a detail you still get to discover. It's fun to watch.
I'd love to see you react to an entire special, bc viewing them in order does add to to the experience, imo. I see how he developed his thought process over the years.

Pointing out the positive vibe is actually super important because for a lot of Inside, the tone of the music is an important part of the message. This song was very much about how people in a position of privilege are happy to give the stage to folks facing oppression only as long as it benefits their own image. Be it social clout, the ability to wield "wokeness" as a weapon, whatever, they'll give a platform, but the moment the truth becomes inconvenient, the moment it becomes uncomfortable to hear, or that their position of power is challenged, that's when their true nature shows. The happy vibe of the music for this song shows how in modern media, a message can only be stated if it's made pleasant and palatable for the ones in power. When the exchange happens where Bo forces Socko to submit at threat of death, and then it immediately jumps to the chorus, that wasn't just for the juxtaposition of the uncomfortable, quiet, emotionally violent moment and the chipper, upbeat tune. It was also quite literal. Bo forces Socko into submission, then turns to the camera and tells us point blank "THAT is how the world works." The world operates on the powerful dominating the underprivileged, and any who dare speak out in a meaningful or impactful way are forced into submission or silenced.

My ONLY bit of constructive advice that is honestly minuscule but something I think you should consider, but if you don’t I don’t think it’ll mess with your overall feel; take bullet point notes *during* first reaction, then break video into two segments: reaction and discussion. Instead of pausing. I personally don’t mind it, but having bounced around a LOT of reaction videos on here looking for real, genuinely analytical human beings, that’s one complaint I see in the comments for some of the mouth breathers who don’t care to hear y’all’s thoughts. “Why do they keep pausing?!” Idiots, I know. But idiots are a large percentage of *any* audience so you gotta learn to cater to them too. So a brief title card saying “discussion” after your first watch I think will keep a lot of people hooked to keep watching but won’t get any dummies to click away just cause you paused one too many times for their very small attention span.
This is great advice. First time seeing these guys and I am impressed with the thoughtfulness. Could improve format.
I've been on a Bo Burnum reaction video binge recently, and I really like how you two interject in the reaction and give your honest opinion about what's being talked about and your thoughts on how he is presenting the information in his songs. Great reaction. Bo is really illustrating "how the world works," Bo is a ventriloquist, but I think in this one he does just use prerecording, because of his facial reaction to the sock calling him out. When I first saw this, my first reaction was, this is a portrayal of a guy stuck in his tiny house by himself for quarantine, and slowly losing his mind, arguing with himself via a sock on his hand. But like everything Bo does, it's layered. It can also be seen as a happy, silly children's song that suddenly takes a very sinister turn. And the sock says all the things that he knows are true, but he doesn't want to see. And in the end, after asking Socko his opinion, he silences him in the most brutal way. It's clever, funny, sad, and tragic all at the same time. (Side note, when you said CRT, I immediately thought cathode ray tube. That's how old I am) Love the reaction. When you do see Inside, let us know your impressions. I didn't know about Bo Burnham until my daughter showed me Inside, now I'm hooked.
I think the symbolism with socko is that people like we are allowed to talk whatever shit we want unless we talk about the platforms we use to talk and how those platforms benefit the people were criticizing, like you can question everything you want unless you want ro actually change stuff

@@dauntingbutthereyougo6910 I never said he was an accomplished ventriloquist. Just that he has the skills. 11 years had passed from that clip to when Inside was made, so undoubtedly his skills are improved.

I have watched "Inside" multiple times, and this song many more... but I was today old when I realized that the part before Socko, the idea world, is communist theory: "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" the slogan popularised by Karl Marx!
Damn I loved your reaction to this! I remember when I was a younger and reading a lot of history, thinking "wait... history is just written by the powers that won" And I knew by that point that history is biased.
Exactly. If you're curious, find a copy of The Assassination of Julius Caesar by Michael Parenti. Best book I've ever read about history being written by the victors.

As someone who grew up on Bo since youtube I've loved his message and hated consuming his material at the same time, due to his inner conflict and how it affect him. But it was always amazingly intelligent, clever, hilarious and moving every song. Each one kind of makes you nervous,like you said because you know he's about to take a left turn into genius and and yank you right back again 😂❤

It's dark but it's true. Bo represents the powers-that-be controlling the narrative. The Cynical Sock, great name by the way, represents inconvenient truths, something the powers-that-be won't tolerate because it conflicts with the narrative. And this is especially true for celebrities, anytime a celebrity gets too real they are ostracized, no, you can't say that, we will let you speak the truth to a certain extent, but don't forget who is on Whose hand.

Loving your Bo reactions! Thanks for putting such thought into the music and lyrics, you guys have great rapport. Yeah, even though Bo is playing a character in each bit of "Inside", I do think that Bo has a pretty cynical view of the world. He got an agent and started performing comedy professionally at 16 years old and learned very quickly "how the world works," particularly the entertainment industry. I'd love to see you react to one of his most famous early tracks, "Art is Dead." That one really explores how he must have felt being presented as a commodity to be bought and sold.

I think the “sleep paralysis” line can be seen as an allusion to the film ‘Get Out’ where the oppressed are in a paralyzed, (and sometimes even outwardly functioning if animated or hijacked by the oppressor), state of disempowerment and disassociation.
By oppressor I mean racists, not necessarily any skin color.

This was brilliantly done...he shows how those in charge want you to think about how the world works, all nice and cozy and warm feeling...but then shows you exactly how it works by belittling you and showing you that you actually have no control of how it works so just get back in line or you will be destroyed...you are not useful unless you are either producing or consuming.

first time watching you guys and enjoyed the conversation a lot (instant sub). Critical thinking is one of the great things that bo's content often inspires so the subject of education and accuracy was great. I agree that everyone must decide on their own truths because proving an objective truth can be very hard or even impossible. History is written by the winners and information will always have a bias intentional or not.
One thing about bo is that he tries to provide material so discussion can happen over it. Saying what you think about and what it made you question instead of just saying if you like or not is the best way to respect his work. Great video
