Bo is the first person, in my opinion, since George Carlin to command words in the same way. To be an absolute wordsmith that creates thoughts and feelings in such a powerful way. I've never heard anyone else command the stage and words the way George Carlin did and Bo does.

Fun fact: Patient 24602 is a reference to Les Mis, in which Jean Valjean is Prisoner 24601. I never thought about it before, but yeah I guess you guys are sort of like the right brand and the left brain! Because one of you is always like, "I'm paying attention to the vibe." One of my favorite lines from this is when Right Brain tells Left Brain, "Half of his problems were supposed to be mine!" Which I think is describing the problem of being too logical in his problem solving, too pragmatic and almost robotic like and cut off from emotion. I definitely felt that one hard. Another excellent reaction! The beginning references “patient 24602,” 1 digit above patient 24601 used in Les Mis. The ending “I love you… I know“ is from Star Wars. If you want to react to some of his high school days, I suggest “I’m Bo Yo”.

A lot of his early stuff was edgy. He has since said it wasn’t funny, it was cringe actually (among others,)^ ,. He started so young. Also, and this is not a defense, but at that time, a lot of us were dumb teens screwing around on the net, which no one understood the consequences of yet, and to make it worse, this was right before all the gamer gate and anti sjw stuff, the internet was wild lol
*subject adjacent, he has talked a lot in interviews about the complexities of growing up on the internet, and that is also one of the primary themes of Inside

    • @Samdark0
      @Samdark0 2 роки тому +7

Problematic, from Inside, addresses this succinctly. Where he seeks atonement for some of the earlier work. A compilation of reflections between the right and left brain, in a sense. We're all governed by a battle between our right and left brains. :)

Thanks for watching this one, glad you guys enjoyed it! He put this show together between ages 19 and 22, and honestly, it was something completely new in the world of standup comedy. This concept, and several other high-concept bits/songs/sketches, were incredibly ambitious -- he would have a couple hours each day before the show to wrangle together the lighting cues and setup at each new venue given what they already had in place. I can't imagine how stressful that would be, but when it worked, it had fantastic results and really created a theatrical experience for the audience.
I can tell you guys like the introspective ones! If you want to stick with younger Bo who was making a name for himself with these kinds of creative songs, please watch "We Think We Know You". That's one of my favorites!

Another awesome breakdown! this was from his special WHAT, and yeah, the way he portrays the internal struggle of responsibility vs freedom is REAL. It’s also much deeper than what people realize.
My therapist uses this song sometimes to help articulate the neural drama of someone who is dealing with depression or anxiety. The whole left brain being one way and the right being the opposite isn’t really physically accurate. When he says “I am the adult, you are the child”, that’s what this is really about.
When you’re depressed, have trauma, anxiety or any of the other cognitive illnesses, your internal monologue splits. Feelings of crushing responsibility can and will override emotional needs for people with depression. Thats where the ‘adult vs child’ line comes from. He’s talking about ‘Transactional Analysis’ which is a form of therapy. It’s based on Freud’s work which is spotty at best (dude thought everything could be solved with enough cocaine) but the idea of different ego’s has held up to scrutiny over the years and been built upon. Getting someone with a mental illness to start up that dialogue with themselves can bridge the gap they’ve created in their own heads.
I love this song because it really is a therapy session on stage. Bo’s a genius.
Please do “From Gods Perspective” next!

11:57 it could be that Bo is referencing a famous scene in one of the Star Wars movies between Han Solo and Princess Leia, where he’s about to be frozen in Carbonite and may never be revoked and so princess Leia says to hon I love you and he looks at her and instead of saying, I love you to respond back I know and I’m blanking on the man’s name but the guy who plays on him basically says that originally it was scripted for him to say I love you too back to Leah, but it was not in character. It wasn’t like something that Han Solo would naturally say so he wanted to replace the line with some thing that was in character for the character, but also conveyed the same meaning back

I’m about Bo’s age. I remember when he first came up at 18 and came to my area. He was way ahead of his time. His comedy almost requires you to have some culture and reallllly understand sarcasm, irony, and actually get a chuckle from dark comedy (which I think are real issues we laugh about that we’re truly afraid of facing or talking about as a culture).
“Words, words, words” has some crazy bars. Goofy as hell, but they are some legit bars.
I second “Rant” and “From God’s Perspective.” Both are great dives into organized religion, and how people use god as a tool according to their own will, perhaps. “I’m Bo Yo” is absolutely silly but also has some good bars. Dude wrote it at like 17. “Art is Dead” is what got me early on him. He’s literally calling out himself and his profession. I think his overall awareness of everything is what blows my mind. Gotta add “We Think We Know You.” That one hurt me. At least kinda realizing what perspective people at his level of celebrity perhaps deal with regularly. And I think it represents his skill set and coping mechanisms perfectly.
Really hope you dive into Bo and find some meaning. He’ll make you think and feel some weird emotions lol. I think he throws a lot of realism at you that it’s almost too real to realize.
    Cheers guys.

Also Phoebe Bridgers, one of the great young musical artists of our generation and a friend of Bo's, did a cover of the song and performed it live on tour and already released a studio version. The live version and studio version are surprisingly very different, and each different from Bo's. All three versions are great, I highly recommend anyone reading this to check them out.

Nice reaction!!! I just watched most of your other Bo Burnham reactions. I hope you guys continue to explore him, other artists, and him. Lol. This is one of my favorite songs by him. Some of my others are From God’s Perspective, Welcome to the Internet, Art Is Dead, We Think We Know You, and from some of his older-older stuff New Math, High School Party (girl), and Words, Words, Words…. And something fun! His START was “My Whole Family…” he only uploaded it to share it with his older brother who had just gone to college - his friend was like, “Why don’t you perform them for him?!”, but then it BLEW UP!!! I know I gave a lottt…. He’s been my favorite comedian for years! I love how intellectual he is, and how he just SAYS certain things, and I think the musical aspect is fantastic - ESPECIALLY for Bo!

You're definitely the right brain because no matter how corny the lyrics are you're over there jamming to the vibe. Meanwhile Dre is focused on the lyrics and can't imagine playing any Bo in his car lol. Right brain goes "you know what, I bet if this dude started making legit music it would be dope because he knows how to build the pace then drop the beat". Left brain has said in multiple videos that there's no way he'd listen to Bo outside of these videos :D

If you watch Words Words Words, you should look into genius lyrics after, because there are so many bars that are so easy to miss.
Also, have to do "We Think We Know You" It is easily one of his best performance pieces.

I see you guys reacting a lot to Bo. If you want to do something different I have a few recommendations for future videos.
"Reagan" by Killer Mike. If you haven't seen it, its incredibly real in a lot of parts and will definitely create a good discussion about the war on drugs and a lot that's been going on in America in the past little bit.
For something more funny look up, "Zinc oxide and you", nobody know about it but it's pretty good.
Or Michael Reeves, "I gave my Goldfish $50,000 to trade stocks." Both are great. Love what you guys are doing

The "I love you....I know" quote is also a reference to Leia Skywalker saying the same to Han Solo and that was his response right before he got turned into a slab of carbon.

I saw this really interesting story once, about people who've had the link between their brain-halves severed (for whatever reason), and they actually become two different people sharing a body from then on. Each brain-half would continue to develop and interpret things completely separate of the other, and the diverge between them would only widen as time went by. It's pretty wild. Apparently it was not uncommon for the right side to be religious whereas the left side was not simultaneously 😂

A second joke in the end line is that it is a quote from Star Wars when Princess Leia told Han Solo she loved him and he replied "I know". Bo loves double and triple entendres.

You guys should check out Bo Burnhams Rant fron the Words Words Words album because it's more similar to his newer, more critical songs. But there are a ton of more light hearted, comedy focused songs on that album as well if you'd like to see the more comical side of his work which initially helped me fall in love with him because of his whitty writing

Not split personality. We all have left and right side personality that conflict. Look into people with brain damage and how different reactions happen and how both sides react or cope with life. Very interesting.

the sidetracked debate at 2:02 is so funny it's like a sitcom exchange like
    2:26:
"nah, okay, think about it like this-"
    "okay."
"-okay, real quick. let's just say, umm,"
"some people were enslaved on a plantation."
    "mhm."
    "-and the masters were robots,"
    ...
    ...
"...and they said the n word."
    "why would- why would..."
"what i'm sayin is, it don't matter...-"
    "mm..."
"-...WHO, or WHAT the entity is..-"
    "...okay,"
"...it's still derogatory coming towards black people,"
"so that robot cannot say the n word, you gettin cancelled bruh."
    "mmh."
    "alright."

Please do "rant." (Not the kanye rant)
It's sooooo good, and from roughly the same time frame as left brain / right brain
incredibly written song where you get to see Bo rap questioning the ideologies of the church.
I guarantee you guys will be blown away

What cool about your reaction is that the guy on the right is more left brained and the guy on the left is more right brained. You can watch how they react to their perspective sides and they are almost inverse. When one guy shakes his head up and down, the other shakes his head right and left.
