I'm pretty sure that wilfred is a representation of the parts of humanity that the doctor fell in love with and desired to protect.
That makes me smile more in this vid because as far as I'm concerned people like Wilfred would make my day fantastic
This comment should have more likes.
That’s exactly what I think!
Every bit of him he was!
You made me cry!

I like how the doctor never let anyone salute him except Wilfred.
Because Wilf didn't salute him as an officer, he saluted him as a comrade.
And Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart.
And captain jack
Fun fact the actor himself did national service with the Parachute regiment in the late 40's
He lets Jack salute him and he even half heartedly salutes back

And could he's been more badass?
Of course yes^^

Daleks look under their bed for Wilf every night!
The oncoming paintball
Wilfred Mott figured that a paintball gun would defeat a Dalek because they have one eye, then had the courage to TRY IT! He belongs in r/madlads

Wilf IS that someone. None of the other companions count anymore. Wilf is the One in an infinite amount of beings across the universe
@@notactuallytesco YES, Wilfred "Bloddy" Mott is the Companion don't lie you know it's true
I've always interpreted Wilfied as the human, down-to-earth version of the Doctor. An old man, a veteran of the greatest war to ravage his world, seeking solace among the stars... A man still seeking to do the right thing. Wilfried would have deserved more screen time, that's for sure.
I think the Doctor really did look at Wilf's life with a lot of admiration. The former's an all powerful time lord, but for all his cleverness and accomplishments, it's the latter that's emerged in his old age with a clean conscience and a loving relationship with his granddaughter, two things the Doctor no doubt wishes he could have again.
He also has a funny scarf and takes no shame in the fact he never killed anyone.
That's actually a really fitting parallel now that I think about it, never thought of it that way. Thank you for leaving this comment :)
The Man who Regrets looked at The Man who Loves and saw one day, the man he could be, if he gave it his all.

Zachary Chenault God damn that hit my heart directly
the fact that wilfred, a human being, was willing to embrace the long dark of death just so an immortal being wouldnt feel pain shows he was every part of human behavior that the doctor grew to love.
"but you never killed anyone..."
"No dont... dont, dont say that like its shameful!"
when WIlfred teared up saying that, it just breaks your heart at the kind of man he is.
the line is "No I didn't, no no i did not. But don't say that like its shameful"
he immediately own the fact that he went to war and never killed anyone, and them immediately shames them for suggesting that that fact is something to be ashamed of
@@theirishviking9278 he isn't shaming them.
Listen to his voice, he's hurt by the implication because some part of him doubts himself.
He's not saying that to her, he's reassuring himself. Judging by his age, he was likely in WW2. When all the soldiers came home and were heralded as heroes for defeating the nazis, he probably was surrounded by men who had stories to tell of how they killed the nazis in the war.
Deep down inside him, he feels some form of shame that he didn't do the same, "his duty". And that small shame inside him has been fighting with his morals and principles his entire life, weighing on his conscience. Pride that he stuck true to his morals through the war, and guilt/shame that he may not have done or given enough.
We saw this in his character, he salutes the doctor, he acts like he's back in the army when the Master returns. He wants to redeem himself, to himself. Some part of him is ashamed, and he wants to make amends. But the tragedy is, that he has nothing to be ashamed of.
@@alexanderrahl7034 Just touching on a point you said (100% well explained, by the way!):
Wilfred was most *definitely* a WW2 vet. There was a clear reference in 'Turn Left' when they were "relocating" the non-English families to "labour camps." Wilfred breaks down, saying "Labour camps; that's what they called them last time." The full realization of what he means by that, is why Donna becomes hysterical, takes chase, and demands to know where the authorities are taking them. Because she knows what Wilfred means by "the last time" - probably with full knowledge that her grandad served and the painful stories of when the truths came out.
It is also the reason that Wilfred and Rocco exchange , quiet, pained looks while saying goodbye and salute one other (as seen in this video) - because they both know what was about to happen. Apart from Rocco saying "My Captain" with his salute, and saying nothing else. Most likely, because they did not wish to alarm the young children. They both knew what "labour camp" meant, and they keep it among themselves, until Wilfred's words are heard by Donna.
Of course, Rocco would have been too young to have been near the times of WW2 himself, but he quite possibly had family who were effected or devastated by it. Perhaps his own parents, or other relatives, and he must have known that Wilfred was a veteran himself; hence the salute and the calling him of "Captain" - which quite possibly could have been Wilfred's former rank.
I feel like Wilfred was a character that kept on growing. In the beginning he was just a random man, but over time he became to represent the best in humanity, I feel like that is why the Doctor said he would be honored if Wilfred was his father, because after all the pain and darkness Wilfred went through he still became a beacon of light that the Doctor would turn to. For all the Doctor's knowledge and for all the things he went through, the Doctor looked to Wilfred as someone who he wished he could become. Not because Wilfred was a insanely smart scientist, or that Wilfred was an invincible warrior, but because he truly cared, and that no matter what life threw at him he was able to get back on his feet and help people out, that he stuck to his ideals, no matter how hopeless the situation. In the end Wilfred is someone who is at the end of his journey, someone who has gone through life and is better for it. I feel like that is what the Doctor wants, he wants to be better for living his life.
Wilfred is the type of the man I want to be in the future. He did not seek to be a hero, just to be a good man. To me, that is what makes him a hero.
William Housman Fun Fact: Wilfred Mott was supposed to be just some random guy (he wasn't even originally called Wilfred Mott), but fans loved him so much they worked him into the story as Donna's grandfather

The Tenth Doctor is a tragedy, because he only got to live a few years. But he was also a miracle, because he grew more over those years than most Timelords do in a lifetime.
Apart from the first Doctor, they all lived a short time up to then.
@@chrisparkes2179 technically the 11th Doctor lived without regenerating for close to 500 years before he regenerated, and the 12th doctor lived for over 4 billion years in the Time Lord time trap.
@@rodneytrotter3725 well, the confession dial thing doesn't count, because the doctor didn't *continuously* live through all that time.

I don’t think 12 actually remembers all 4 billion years in the confessional dial, since he technically “died” each time.
Also, I think 11 actually lived closer to 1000 years, as he was still in his 900’s when 10 regenerated, but then says he’s over 2000 after he regenerates into 12

One of the best lines in all of Whodom, to be honest. This line indicates that Part of the reason Wilf is so proud of his service is because he did his duty without ever having to kill anyone.
I really hate that all of the Wilfred compilations I've found leave out that bit. That is such an important part of his character
Fun fact that was what actually happened to the actor in real life and they worked into the script. Bernard went to war, never shot a man, and is extremely proud of that fact
And, tragically, it was Wlfred's selfless act (stepping into the radiation chamber so the technician on the other side could escape) that led to the Doctor sacrificing his 10th incarnation so that a kind old man could see his granddaughter again.
It shows the innocence and selflessness of Wilf and the sacrifice of The Doctor to protect those who do what is right, even though they aren't perfect. If ten had to go, he went out the best way possible.
It was tragic and so well written. He was such a great actor and character..

@@nab4742 that was a show he put on because of the regret that he feels. 11 is trying to forget but he can't. It's said as much during the day of the doctor special.

@@spilltheteaspillthetea Which series had Clara as the impossible girl for a super long boring story arc? I liked Tennant and Smith to a point, but then they had a whole series/ season that focused on Clara.

Now you can explore the stars and Universe, Rest in Peace Bernard
Bernard Cribbins what a great actor rest in peace, just found out and went straight to this video. Alway thought Wilfred Mott was such a fantastic character
This could be a conspiracy, the 11th wore a fez because wilfred wore a fez.
Pretty sure it's a beanie, would've been nice though
Yana beanies are just boneless fez’s
Steeley Gaming he wore a beanie, but it does look like a fez sometimes. But it was a red beanie, so it could be why Eleven wore a red fez.
I’m going to say it’s instinctual.
@@terribletree7933 You have such a way with words.
This is beautiful. You make me cry and laught.
I agree with you. Wilfred isn't the most famous companion. He isn't the most present companion. Some people think he isn't a real companion. But, for me, he is the most touching companion.
Janjira Kongsampong he’s more of a companion than the actual companions were.
He's my favorite companion. He is a companion in my opinion.
He’s the bestest companion of all
Casting the great Bernard Cribbins as Wilfred was one of the best things to ever happen to modern Who. A beautiful character, masterfully played in every scene. Thank you for this emotional tribute.
I would have loved to see Wilfrid Mott and this Doctor travel the stars together.
RIP Mr Cribbins.
Wilf is everyone's kooky grandpa/uncle whatever. But bless him, he is the one true voice of sanity in an insane world, and even helps an immortal time lord realize what is truly important.
He actually reminds me of my uncle. Hes got the same life in his eyes and fire in his heart. I hope I can live up to his example
I think... Wilf was the first person to realize that the Doctor was more Human than anyone else could ever hope. I think Wilf would have made a wonderful companion. (Oh man the tears!!) In my eyes... Wilf was one of the Doctor's friends.... and he don't got a lot of soldier friends.
If you include the single story companions he was a companion
1:48 the way he said Donna 🥺
RIP Bernard Cribbins, thanks for the stories, the memories, the laughs and for knocking 4 times!!
Wilfred Mott was one of the greatest examples of manhood that I've seen in whovian storytelling.
The parts where he salutes really portray that perfectly, he's a soldier and he shows respect in the most masculine of ways and yet he isn't afraid to love, to cry and basically to feel. Ahhhh what a perfect man
"You're gonna see the stars... and then bring a bit of them back for your old gramps"
I don't know what to say
just be silent and cry ;_; :)
@Winter Wren He is just so wholesome.
@Winter Wren Did you watched Dirk Gently? :)
@Winter Wren both the Uk one and the netflix one?
hmm, atm i just watch animes since i dont know what do watch too xD
Wilfred and Donna... Two of the best characters outside of the Doctor himself.
"Every night, Doctor, when it gets dark, and the stars come out... I'll look up at the sky, and think of you..."
Thank you Bernard Cribbins💔
Gosh this music.
Gosh this eddit.
Gosh the tears.
Thank you very much!
The music is by sleeping at last
Dom Watt I know that thanks. I'm such a fan of SAL
Gosh the heartbreak
Okay, anybody else notice Wilfred lived at number 11, no way was that a coincidence, the show was hinting that Wilfred would be the cause of the tenth Doctor's death and that he will become the eleventh Doctor, it was staring at us in the face the whole time! Well done, very clever Russell T Davis era, things like that is why it will always be my favourite period of Doctor Who.
Good writers and directors put everything in for a reason. Chibnall on the other hand hasn't fought that far ahead.
Even if only for one episode...
@@visibletonone.superiortoal2033 Chibnall has a very specific method of writing episodes. First, he gathers up 1000 clippings of rough drafts of Classic Who episode transcripts, then he throws 6 darts at them. Whatever they land on is what the episode itself is about. Then he gets 500 tumblr suggestions, throws one single dart at them, and whatever IT lands on is the twist or reveal of that episode. For story arcs he takes a shit on his desk while doing the mambo and whatever word it looks most like is the over-arching theme of the arc.
Thank you Bernard Cribbins, you will be tremendously missed.
Watching this just after the news about Bernard's passing. Rest in peace to an esteemed legend.
Missed all of that, it was all blurry and smoky in here....And someone was peeling onions.....
Goddamn onion ninjas
Thank you for not forgetting about Wilfred, the forgotten companion. You did great work with this one.
Thank you!
The grandpa of the forgetting companion... now i am crying...

Well, he did travel once with the pretend Doctor Who.
Words will never do Mr. Cribbins justice. You reached for the stars Wilf. Now you're there. You made it Wilf. Across generations. Around the world. We mourn for you. Rest easy.
Oh Wilf. Lovely Bernard Cribbins. May you rest in the stars you wanted to reach out for.
The fact that he blows the dr. A kiss and cries at Donna’s wedding 😭😭😭 wilf
Wilfred has made me cry during watching Doctor Who. He's such a great character and his actor is incredibly amazing.
Eight months ago I commented on this...and now he's gone, such an amazing character 💚✨️ He should never be forgotten.
Rest in Peace, Bernard. We’ve truly lost one of our best
I 100% was not ready for this. I clicked on it thinking "Hey I loved that guy!" Now I'm crying and a mess. This is such a lovely tribute to a beautiful character. You understand this show so well and you have an incredible talent for expressing exactly who the characters are, and how much you love it.
Wilfred Mott, the old soldier. Able to serve but missed out on the worst of war, yet is unashamed by it. SO much like the Doctor should be, yet won't allow himself because of the horrors he has seen and yes, even committed in the cause of saving the galaxy, even though he had to destroy both the enemy, and his own people.
This is a very real thing called survivor's guilt. Yet Wilfred helps Ten understand, at the end. Both have their own regrets, their own scars. Wilfred, the man who is not remotely important, yet means everything at the end.
At this point in your life, Doctor, who else could it be who understands you so much?
R.I.P Bernard Cribbins, Wilfred Mott was my favorite character for reasons like this video. He will be missed ❤️
I came back to see this video after I heard that he passed away. I'm crying , literally I'm crying. RIP Bernard
Wilfred is an important companion-
however- he’s so underrated
his beauty and love for people is stunning and amazing
he needs more recognition
he deserves more recognition
he’s a wonder to behold and I wish he had been featured in Doctor Who a lot more than he had been
TO the extent of my knowledge, Wilf was meant to be a parallel to the doctor (both fought in a war, never killed anyone, are the only survivor etc...) and I think the writers may have (un)intentionally added another parallel. They both deserve more recognition, and they're always there when they're needed the most, but never take any credit for it, they just fade back into the crowd
I wish we got to see Wilfred one last time, like Wilfred said “that would make my Christmas”
to bad he past way =/
