Lamborghini Diablo; is the first version the best driving Diablo of all?

  • Lamborghini launched the Diablo in 1990 and I've long thought it's the best value Diablo of all. With 492bhp from its 5.7litre V12, this is a 202mph analogue Lamborghini supercar that still feels special today. Here's my take on this classic Lamborghini supercar..

In 1994 I was in my first year of university at RMIT in the CBD of Melbourne, Australia. One day I walked out the front door and parked on the street was one of these. I nearly fainted. The owner was standing next to the car, and he looked like a rich international student. Lucky bugger. Anyway, I wandered off and I was about 100 metres up the road and he started the car. The whole street shook. Thinking about, even now 26 years later, sends a chill down my spine. I swear the engine in that car is a gateway to hell. Best car name ever.

In 1990, I sat behind the wheel of the first Diablo to be imported into Australia. The V12 was left idling when the driver ( the Australian distributor's son) leapt in an agitated state as the local Motor Registry wouldn't issue a Certificate due a missing piece of paper from Italy ! The new owner ( due to collect the car that afternoon ) was going to be very disappointed . Even at idle , it was a scary beast with the speedo reading to 340 km/ hr.

I was lucky enough to use a 91 Diablo as an everyday car for 9 years and I loved every moment . It is much quicker than one might think . The previous owner made small changes to make it more comfortable like moving the bottom half of the gauges over to the centre console to lower the cliff instrument cluster . I have a video on youtube showing it all .I really miss that car .this might sound silly but even my tigers loved riding in it and it was very comfortable for them to hang halfway out the window . anyway , I really enjoyed the video .

Of all the cars you've driven on this channel, this is the one that appears to excite you the most from what you can tell as a viewer. It would be great to see you drive this again to see how it compares to what you've driven since. It is such a beautiful car in terms of look and sound - one of the peak car designs of all time. From what the owner says about it and the way you look when you drive it it seems like this truly is the essence of driving. Would be a great addition to the garage if you could get your hands on one.

Worth noting on Harry's command of the English language...
      - Noun. *relevation*. (obsolete) A raising or lifting up.
      (en.wiktionary.org/wiki/relevation)
@ 15:26 Harry first mentioned the electric windows would be a "relevation" to Countach owners, just as he was winding them up or they were being "elevated" ...so, correct!
@ 19:37 Harry then mentioned the steering was just a "relevation". The steering wheel is actually adjustable and can be raised or "lifted up" ...so once again, correct!

Yes, finally Harry is reviewing my all-time dream car! I've been a fan of this Lambo since my earliest childhood, I remember having like 20 different Diablo toy cars, from various Matchbox ones to my precious 1/18 Giallo Bburago model. It's amazing how this design, after all these years, still manages to mesmerize me. Such a timeless classic!!

While everyone raves about the countach the diablo is my childhood bedroom poster having grown up in the 90s. I Remember as a child I would be drawn towards the scale model of the Diablo more than the other cars. It’s always been my favourite Lambo.
For most of us who can’t afford to even spot at one at our local roads thank you Harry for sharing the experience.

Sir, Your car reviews and videos are wonderful. The touch upon the history and lineage of the vehicles gives one a true sense of where this car is coming from. Love it that the camera angles show what the car feels like from a driver/passenger point of view. This particular one left me smiling ear to ear. I always look out for videos from your channel. Super stuff.

My father has owned an early ‘93 2WD Diablo (albeit tastefully modified) for most of my life. As a child, I remember how he used to compare it to “driving a truck” because of the sheer weight of the steering and clutch.
Despite that, he always says he never tires of driving it. Pure 90s supercar drama and ceremony.
