  • This weeks tip is about using your "Odd" foot to increase your double bass strength and speed.
This is by far one of my favorite "techniques" to use when performing live.
Instead of continually using my primary foot during all single kick drum parts, I'll switch feet and use my, "Odd" foot. I use the words PRIMARY foot and ODD foot as it depends if you're right handed/footed or left handed/footed.
By using your Odd foot in single kick drum patterns, you'll not only keep your foot warm, you'll also give your Primary foot a quick break. This helps me to balance my energy and allows me to get the most power in my double bass.
Try it out and see if it works for you too!

Dette. One of the best drummers to never have a band to call home.

Always thought this concept was a good idea. I have incorporated it myself for a number of years. I find if I keep switching my lead foot, it also helps me count/keep track of certain sections in songs.

Back in the 90s and early 2000s I never warmed up , I'm now 47 and warm up before any live gig , as much as I didn't want to admit it , I found my playing was as it should be from the begining of the set , back in the day I used the first song to "warm up" , I was lucky I never cramped up or anything , but as all us old guys know the older you get the more you need to practice and keep up to standard .

As he says "I'm not warmed up "but does fast singles and turns around to the camera. Lol. Thanks Jon that's a great tip. I love your no nonsense and to the point videos. Huge Slayer fan too.

Doesn't matter if you're cold, and playing in a controlled environment... you're still a complete power beast!!! 🤘

Loving your content John , this is important for up and coming young drummers to know , also when they see and hear you play without triggers it might encourage them to play with more power , hit harder and maybe not use triggers , well played thrash where the drums are clearly acoustic sounds and feels so much better , more "metal" for want of a better word .
I know triggers are useful ,I get it ,I just think they are way over used in metal when they don't have to be .

Cool vid. I'll try your advice.
I'm strange though lol. I write with my left but my dominant foot is right. But strangely I do not use left handed scissors and do more with my right hand than left. I even play guitar right handed. Somewhat ambidextrous. But I'm cool being a freak. 😆

I do this, but I also switch leading hands in songs that aren't super fast and don't require any ghost notes. Gives the brain a good shakeup too.

I keep flamming when I do double bass but for some damn reason I can hit them perfect when using both hands on the hihat. My hand and feet really are tied together lol

Thanks Jon now I have an excuse for always using my left foot on the bass drum. Lol. By the way I’m left handed but I play right handed but I’m not knocking you playing left handed i actually think it’s cool.
Oh and not sure you knew this Dave Lombardo is left handed too. Im thinking he plays right handed because it’s how he always saw drums setup. Thats why I do. But as for your playing goes your an amazing drummer thats lame people give you shit about playing left handed.
What do you got a office/warehouse to jam at or what I see traffic in the background.

When we get to a certain level of drumming, Which side we lead off with becomes irrelevant.. A skilled drummer will have equal control over both sides.. Or at least we aspire to..
