It's basically an accentuation pattern based on the use of triple subgrouping (not triplets) in a metric context with originally duple subdivision, resulting in polyrhythm pattern 2 against 3 (2 subgroups against 3 beats in the metronome). With 3 beats already played you just add the 4th beat to complete the bar. You can also formulate this pattern as an irregular meter in 8/8 (3+3+2). Very common pattern in all kinds of popular music including Metal.
Basically, one of Dave Lomardo's main go to's the the snare intro to Murders in the Rogue Morgue by Iron Maidens own Clive Burr (RIP). Dave has good taste!
Wow, awesome tip John! Can't believe I missed this one. I've been playing these beats for years, But never thought about the accents. Knowing the approach to one's playing, Opens up so many doors.. If that makes any sense.
Dave's left handed but plays right , you are left but play left , in my opinion you are absolutely the best drummer to sit in for slayer , not hating on Paul , I think he was best in testament
Jon have you considered investing in a mic and desk set up for these clips? Your prestige and talent deserves proper audio mate Ps long time follower, since the days you had 8 toms
Can you do a video on strength and stamina training? I used to be able to play really well through entire live Metallica albums, anthrax, megadeth etc… I ended up doing some damage to my wriest so I had to stop playing for a while. Now I struggle with playing some of the simplest stuff and get burnt out very quickly.
Maybe Dette used left accents, here, for clarity & ease of learning. I seem to remember him accenting with (& leading with) alternating feet, in another video, so it's not a lack of competency, if I could be so direct.
Jon, I respect your playing, but this brought up one of the things that have been wrong with my playing for 30 years. I was a metal cat from the beginning and Lombardo and Menza and Ulrich etc were my influences. You were somewhere there too with Testament and Slayer. It’s highly problematic. All of this is single stroke stuff. None of these cats utilized much double strokes in fills. That’s where Weckl and Colaiuta came in for me. It literally took a decade of un-learning all this shit and being so stiff and doing all this stuff to just relax and let the drum head rebound. Please don’t take this as an attack, it’s just some retroactive analysis of what held me back. The answer is simple - metal. It was cool and all but being so committed to one genre limits you and I so wish I could have those years back and listen to more than metal. I could have been so much better.
I have the opposite problem, went from playing Jon Theodore Mars Volta beats - all loose and fluid, to playing entire songs of blastbeats, where such looseness is a hindrance!
When Jon is warmed up and cooking, he plays with SUCH power!!! He doesn't phone in a thing. Every hit is a kick in the face! 🤘

Nicko actually made this same accent pattern into a beat. Loneliness of the long distance runner for ex.

It all started from " Wipeout "
For those wondering, this accent pattern is 2 dotted 8th notes with a regular 8th note.

Sub Jonny, is already done !
A left handed drummer is so much easier to learn from.
