1987! Another great year for Heavy Metal! King Diamond dropped Abigail. Testament came onto the scene with The Legacy and Anthrax dropped Among The Living.
Who remembers playing Master of Puppets for the first time and saying, "Holy shit! This is better than Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning!" Who remembers playing Reign In Blood for the first time and saying, "Holy shit, this is better than Show No Mercy and Hell Awaits!"
I do! And That's exactly what I said when I Heard Among!
There's something special about the 3rd releases from these bands (Megadeth I'd say 4th release was more special than the 3rd) that when I listen to them today, they still sound as fresh to me as they did in the '80's.
Call me old school, but I also prefer these older albums that weren't tracked to a click! No putting tracks on a grid. No samples. Just good old fashioned mixing and great playing! What a concept! Lol!
Skeletons was one of my favorite songs off ATL. Charlie's double bass was on fire! When I started filling in for Charlie in 2012, I was always hoping we would play it live. 5 years later, I finally received the amazing news that the band wanted to perform the ENTIRE ATL album on the 2017 tour, celebrating ATL's 20th anniversary. What a great tour that was!

Imagine for one glorious second that Lars decided to enjoy retirement (yes he did great things for Metallica...he earned it)....and they called up this dude. Their next album would be insane.
Wow !!! that was great!!!!! Anthrax played a small club in Boston in 87 or 88 .. Metal Church opened the show ... I was up against the 3 foot stage in front of Scott Ian . I was headbanging so hard i smashed my head on his foot and it hurt him a bit .. he was not mad and gave me one of his picks at the end of the set .. and i Got a drumstick that i still have ..... Im 56 and Lived the Metal scene in Boston 82 to about 91 ( It was great) then had to move away for a bit ...
I bet Metal Church were awesome as well!

Scott Ian always used the work "relentless" to describe Skeleton. Watching this it's not hard to see why. Brilliant job Jon.

Nailed it perfectly! Even that little bit after the fill @ 5.00 mins where Charlie just speeds up a tiny bit to catch the guitars…..🤘💪
It was sad about Mike Howe. He seemed like a great dude and had a great voice for the band. I do like the new guy and new material!
I met Paul Bostaph at a drum clininc in Sacramento, great guy, he did a Q and A, played to Disciple and Repentless...he is amazing, as Dette is.

@@hinjurock70 Charles it's that great. Dette is way better. Dave Lombardo is a drum god. Charlie is just generic. He could've been something but he's too busy obsessed with his coffee and toy collecting. That's why anthrax plays small clubs while bigger bands play arenas and headline festivals.

Way better? Lol Not at all - he's maybe close to as good. I can tell you're not a drummer. Remember, Charlie invented all of those drum beats - Jon is just copying them. Charlie is just as or more technical than Jon, and clearly more creative (he writes most of the music for Anthrax) and also has more groove.
And the reason why one band is bigger than another doesn't have much to do with the drummer - the vocals and songwriting are the main factors in musical success in any genre. If success had to do with drumming, than wouldn't Anthrax and Slayer both be much bigger than Metallica since their drummers are technically much better than Lars (and I'm a Lars fan - he plays cool unique creative beats and fills that perfectly compliment the songs, but there's no denying that Charlie and Dave are significantly better technically)? So yeah, that statenment is pretty ignorant and nonsensical.
Those double kicks are so tight John. I wish I could do that, I'd cover so many Anthrax songs 😅. That was awesome 👌

among the living was the first album i bought with my own money at age 13.. the dude at the music store was annoyed when i approached him because he probably thought i was looking for some hip hop cd but his mood got better quite quickly when i asked if they had any anthrax records.. he called me a good boy 😂

This was the song that made me an Anthrax back in high school. I liked Lars back in the day, but some guy named Charlie Benante kicked my a$$ with the double bass in this song, and all the cool fills...he's a machine. Great cover as well. Like Joey said, it's a rocker!!

Insanely good, and different seeing a lefty play the drums!! Not knocking lefties ( left handed people not bring political views to the comments!!!).....
I finally found a left handed drummer :). Now I want a left handed drum kit.
No such thing as a left or right handed kit. I'm right handed but set my kit up "backwards", basically it's just the toms going right to left smallest to biggest with the floor toms on the left. I prefer the hi hat on my left like righty players but play it with the left hand with my right on the snare, no criss-crossing my arms right over left. Nobody else could play my kit the way it was arranged, said it was like having to drive in Europe on the opposite side of the road with a North American left side steering wheel, fine with me, don't like folks touching my sh!t anyway.
He actually plays it better than Charlie B. Yeah I know, I know. But live, Charlie's tempos are all over the place, causing the songs to drag and sound slower than the record, especially faster double kick tempos. Love me some Anthrax though🤘

Doesn't sound as cool with all straight 16ths every time. How Charlie alternates between that and a gallop makes it interesting.

Sorry Jon but I think Hell Awaits is better than Reign In Blood. Yes I know its fast, brutal as fuck. But nowhere near as creative and eerie as Hell Awaits.
