I just came across him lately and instantly identified with the style - its' a very natural style that forms the melody out of the chord shapes you'd be playing anyway to accompany someone -you just have to swing it properly- course this style leads one to look at instruments from the 30s-50s and that's where Norman's comes in! 😄
Jonathan is truly the master of the Allan Reuss rhythm and chordal-solo style. I hope his playing and lessons attract more young guitarists to '30s and '40s swing.
I've always thought that the music we hear all the time is over orchestrated...why do we need more than Jonathan Stout playing an amazing guitar? So beautiful!!
Was fortunate to find both a 1945 & 1947 Epiphone Emperor. While not quite as big as this Stromberg; they are LOUD! It's the only guitar that my string quartet complained was too loud!
Always love Norman's Rare Guitars, you just NEVER know what great musician is going to stop by. Some of the very best on this planet, and they all have something in common - they love Norm Why? Nor is a fantastic individual. Just look at the young people he helped give a start - MANY Thanks norm for keeping the music alive, and gathering and passing on great guitars to keep the music alive.. It Norms it is NOT "THE DAY THE MJUSIC DIED" thanks for all you do.. from SE Texas Bear ❤💯🙏
Sixty years ago my first guitar teacher was Harry Kusselman. He had a beautiful old Stromberg archtop. He died back in the mid 1960s but he inspired me to keep up my lessons. God bless him.
Truly brilliant. This cat has been on my radar for years now.He is an absolute treasure of a musician and most excellent reference source for me for guitar arrangements and ideas.
Although obviously different for each guitar, this is how GOTD should be done. I’ve received an education and heard how the instrument should be played to sound its best. Thanks Jonathan and Norm!
It is amazing that sound is coming out of a box. Somebody check for batteries. The high notes are so crisp. I’m an old high school band drummer from the 60s!
What a fabulous song! Well played, gently sung and incredible talent! Thank you, Norm for having Johnathan take the old Stromberg around the block! Whew!!
I'm content to reside here for a while, this is as good today as it was yesterday and sometimes you simply need time to take it all in. Thank you Norman for making this happen and thank you Jonathan for demonstrating this incredible instrument so superbly, both Guitar and Player are an absolute treat, as is the choice of material along with it's performance and don't be so humble, I certainly include your Vocal Jonathan.. Bravo.
I'm a big fan of acoustic guitar players and listen to them often. This guy is a great find and thank you Norm for bringing him to our attention. His playing is phenomenal and I will be searching his solo efforts out, for sure.
Fantastic. I want to hear this through an AM tube radio in my grandmother’s pantry. This guy has captured a beautiful era of music in his approach. Inspiring.
A guitar often associated with my fellow native Charlestonian (and my grandfather’s boyhood friend), Freddie Green (though by 1951, I think he was using the Gretsch he played for the rest of his life). Jonathan does it justice.
Just listening to the guitarist play and sing , immediately gave me an old French heyday feel in my imagination . Quite superb and gratifying ...thankyou kindly ! Ooh la la ...
Man where would I be if I hadn’t stumbled across Norm’s Rare Guitars on the net a few years back . I feel better after listening here every time. Thank You!
Holy smokes! That was some serious playing… Obviously, a huge amount of study and old-fashioned practice was required to reach that level of skill! And the Stromberg was as beautiful to hear as it was to look at! Great video, Norm, thanks for sharing!
I’m a great rock and general music fan. Been through all the eras of rock gods. But this is real guitar playing. Absolutely awesome. Where do these jazz and swing players get these chords. Fantastic but didn’t recognise a single one. Fantastic. 🙋♂️👏👏👏🇬🇧
Wow, the tone, the projection, the playing of Jonathan. Unplugged and this guitar is amazing. I'm going to start saving for one of these lol. Great video Norman. Glad you put these cats on as i now have another great player to follow. tom
Pure and simple, too the point! This man plays with passion, conviction you might say! Guitar lessons cannot give you passion, it comes from your sole! It’s amazing how he caresses the guitar an makes it sing! Pure and simple! Thanks Norman.
Yea, Mr. Stout has whatever "IT" is. Those are some wrist bending chords and there were some quick little syncopated licks slipped in without missing a change. Very nice. As a 56 year old who has been playing for 43 years I started off playing Judas Priest, Iron Maiden etc but today oddly I prefer Jazz and Big Band 30's and 40's music.
I have a modest collection of vintage archtops and this one looks and sounds fabulous. These were largely confined to the rhythm section until guys like Charlie Christian played complex single note solos on them. I love the chord melody stuff.
A very impressive player indeed, and so relaxed and smooth. This is the kind of playing my old tutorial book from Mickey Baker tries to convey, I improved 100% from just a few chapters of that! Yep that is classy stuff.
We try to feature all guitar styles. This guy is carrying the torch for thirties style swing guitar. Folks. This is as good as it gets

Well Norm, it does not need to get any better! I am not a fan of this genre but his artistry just sucked me right into the vortex.
LOVE THIS!! Good music is good music, what ever the genre. THANK YOU NORM.
Jonathan is simply the best, he makes it look so easy and of course.....it's not!
This guy was fantastic! And what a breath of fresh air fresh air from the Norm
Did Norm have a mint or something?
😉
He's been on many times before, check out old episodes.... fantastic !
I get it......The Norm...
Jonathan is truly the master of the Allan Reuss rhythm and chordal-solo style. I hope his playing and lessons attract more young guitarists to '30s and '40s swing.
To say that Jonathan is a master is a real understatement.
I don't think so, I think the term master is overused. This guy has mastered his chosen specific musical genre/area, the term makes sense.
I've always thought that the music we hear all the time is over orchestrated...why do we need more than Jonathan Stout playing an amazing guitar? So beautiful!!
This gentleman's finger coordination is absolutely amazing.
Thank you Jonathan. 🙏❤️🕊️
he makes the song complete, like a whole band! AND singing and playing fits perfectly together, like his voice too! 👍
Me too. He's a better singer than he gives himself credit for.
Incredible guitar and performance from Jonathan Stout.
What a wonderful change of pace.
Yip!
What monsterous tone! He’s a time traveler
A blast from the past, priceless. Thank you.
I would buy his album

Incredible performance and gorgeous guitar tone!
Holy cow! This guys a monster. And that guitar sounds incredible.
That’s very sweet and addictive to me I could listen day or night to your sugar bee 🐝 just the gentleness we all need into our lives all day long
Nobody knows more about this stuff than Jonathan Stout. What a player as well.
This Guitar was made for this Man, Awesome..
I have no idea what he's doing and it's magnificent.
The best of the best.
👍👍👍✌❤😎
Sixty years ago my first guitar teacher was Harry Kusselman. He had a beautiful old Stromberg archtop. He died back in the mid 1960s but he inspired me to keep up my lessons. God bless him.
Stout's knowledge, enthusiasm, talent and humility are staggeringly great
Beautiful guitar, fantastic history, excellent playing!
That guy's the real thing for sure. And the guitar is a gem, too. Great day at Norm's !
Great! The guitar arrangements and technical complexity from that era was something
Love Jonathan's playing and style. He's like a time traveler from the 50's.
Wow! Clicked for the Stromberg but this Stout guy is amazing. What a player.
Truly brilliant. This cat has been on my radar for years now.He is an absolute treasure of a musician and most excellent reference source for me for guitar arrangements and ideas.
Great guitar. Great playing. Great voice. That is great music.
Although obviously different for each guitar, this is how GOTD should be done. I’ve received an education and heard how the instrument should be played to sound its best. Thanks Jonathan and Norm!
To have THAT guitar in stock & for sale & THAT fellow to demo it is a guitar world coup for NRG’s. 19” bout mighty Stout.
Incredible playing. In "Sugar" the internal single notes within the chord rang out perfectly. Beautiful playing.
The guitar And the player were phenomenal. And I also enjoyed his singing…..he has nothing to be ashamed of!
WOW !! Those chord changes😮. Incredible !!😊
Whew!!
Wow, that guy is a fantastic guitarist and vocalist! Loved hearing this style of music. Beautiful guitar, too!
Skill, style and feeling are fantastic ! Congrats !
I’ve listened to Jonathan Porter, Jonathan Lager and Jonathan Ale but Jonathan Stout is without a doubt the Best!
I don't know why we stopped playing this style as popular music. It's way better than everything on the radio nowadays.
Wow, wonderful playing and a beautiful instrument.
I love Johnathan Stout! His style is simply the best!
Thanks, Mr. S. That's a treat.
A killer guitar, and a killer player ! Great stuff happening at Norm's.
Guys a great player, straight outta the 30's that sound is to me... beautiful guitar, awesome tone...yup yup....
I'm content to reside here for a while, this is as good today as it was yesterday and sometimes you simply need time to take it all in. music to my ears
I've watched a lot of Jonathan's videos over the years. Feelgood music.

A rare treat. Thank you, Jonathan.
Fabulous guitar and a master who understands it to play it. And he can sing jazz!
Thanks for the heads up on this Guy. He's fantastic!
Fantastic. I want to hear this through an AM tube radio in my grandmother’s pantry. This guy has captured a beautiful era of music in his approach. Inspiring.
I never heard of Jonathan, he's a master, make it look smooth and easy!
Fabulous 🎉
The lower bout is massive sitting on Mr. Stout’s lap and he makes anything he touches sounds so good!
YES!!! More of this please!!!!
What a fabulous guitar player. I'm not sure about the Strawberg. But this is great guitar playing.
Nice to see Jonathan agaIn. He really made that guitar sing. What a beautiful instrument. Very rich tone. Enjoyed listening. Thanks for sharing.
It's greatest guitar sound in the world. Amazing jazz boxes
Excelent guitar and guitarrist! Superb
A guitar often associated with my fellow native Charlestonian (and my grandfather’s boyhood friend), Freddie Green (though by 1951, I think he was using the Gretsch he played for the rest of his life). Jonathan does it justice.
Jonathan is always a favorite when he’s on the show! What a guitarist! Norms!!!!🥳👍
Just listening to the guitarist play and sing , immediately gave me an old French heyday feel in my imagination . Quite superb and gratifying ...thankyou kindly ! Ooh la la ...
Yay Jonathan Stout!
Stout is an absolute maestro.
Saw Jonathan Stout and his Campus 5 last Sunday at Knotts Berry Farm. What a treat! Going to see him there next Sunday as well.
I could listen to Jonathon play all day
Thanks to Norm and Johnathan, I learned a lot I never knew from that era. A humble, lovable GOTD!
Norm, one of your best videos. Thanks so much.
Man where would I be if I hadn’t stumbled across Norm’s Rare Guitars on the net a few years back . I feel better after listening here every time. Thank You!
Wow!! What a treat!😊
I will be listening a lot more to Jonathan!!!
I'd love to be able to play like that. Nice!
Holy smokes!
That was some serious playing… Obviously, a huge amount of study and old-fashioned practice was required to reach that level of skill! And the Stromberg was as beautiful to hear as it was to look at! Great video, Norm, thanks for sharing!

Two of the coolest dudes ever!!!
I agree...I follow Jonathan on IG and he's the best and my favorite for this style, bar none and hands down.
Wow, the tone, the projection, the playing of Jonathan. Unplugged and this guitar is amazing. I'm going to start saving for one of these lol. Great video Norman. Glad you put these cats on as i now have another great player to follow. tom
Always a pleasure when Jonathan stops by and plays for us ! Thank you Jonathan and Norm !!
I've been lucky enough to play a Stromberg at a Guitar Show here in chilly Melbourne, such beautiful instruments
How good was that!?!
Beautiful bit of craftsmanship on the guitar too!
Such an interesting conversation!!
Love how those single notes ring out on that jazz box!
So dang smooth! Thanks for letting JS light up the showroom.
Always great to have Jonathan dropping by and play 👍🏻 And what a beautiful guitar
Wow , love those big jazz boxes ! Im a huge Bob Wills fan , such uplifting music ! Thanks !
Really enjoyed this. What a great guitarist. I am lucky to have seen this. Loved it. Cool guy too.

Fantastic video - great to hear Norm and Jonathan talking about music....and the playing is amazing of course!
Great, thanks for introducing him
Great. Lovely playing and singing, too. So nice to hear a master of the style playing an instrument worthy of such attention.
Oh my god he is an incredible player !!!!!
Sweet! Thanks for the wake up call.
I have a modest collection of vintage archtops and this one looks and sounds fabulous. These were largely confined to the rhythm section until guys like Charlie Christian played complex single note solos on them. I love the chord melody stuff.
Man, that is one gorgeous guitar man. A beautiful work of art. Bigger body than the Epi. The stair step pick guard is awesome.
Love the old stuff. And that guy can really play it. And wouldn’t I love to be able to afford that guitar. Let’s hear more of this stuff.
A very impressive player indeed, and so relaxed and smooth. This is the kind of playing my old tutorial book from Mickey Baker tries to convey, I improved 100% from just a few chapters of that! Yep that is classy stuff.
