You literally just helped all d17’s where you think it’s the oil pan leaking 😂. Exactly the same thing happened to me and I was pissed to still see a oil leak after doing the oil pan gasket. Sadly I will need to open it all back up again to take care of this.

Oh my god. This has to be my problem. I redid my oil pan gasket twice, still leaked. Then lead me to believe it was the crankshaft seal so I was going to do that next, but where the oil was getting on, it makes perfect sense it's this oil seal. Been battling this for so long. Thank you so much.
Twice? Consider yourself lucky, I’ve changed mine several times like 4 until finally I’m like there’s no way, cus I thought maybe warped pan? I used the right stuff silicone maker and it’s still leaking so now I know no way it’s that, also my crank seal is new so can’t be that

Bro You have no idea how much headache you saved me. I recently replace all my seals. Valve cover, oil pan, cam shaft, crankshaft, pcv breather box, and distributor seals. Only to find a oil leak some where around that area you mentioned. I'm not gonna worry about it now but ima buy the seal for when the time comes.

I thought it was the crankshaft seal and I was going to change it again but decided to remove the timing belt covers and hook all sensors back up and run it to see where it was coming from…eureka! I wasn’t sure how to remove oil pump so I found your video, I was contemplating removing studs on bottom side of oil pump that go through the oil pan so I didn’t have to remove the oil pan. Was going to double nut the studs and see if they come out but I think I’ll follow your lead and remove the pan. Thank you! I have a 01 Civic, 1.7L, lost nearly 2 qts oil if I drive on long trip…350 miles but if I drove around town I could go 600-800 miles before I needed to add oil
I am so glad that you will willing to get it fixed. That is one of the problems with the oil pump that the majority of the people keep replacing things around it. But I'm glad that you are able to fix it..

2005 civic myself, and I'm pretty sure you pinpoint my issue. Already changed my head gaskets. I always dred going under that hood.. It's worse than a micro itx computer!
if this is the same for a 2005 D17A2, this helps ALOT.. To bad i thought it was the crank seal. I tore down to it, did crank seal, oil pan seal, timing belt, and water pump 3 weeks ago. It's still dumping oil from the back of the engine. I guess i get to do it again. Thank you for the great information.

I wish I would have seen this video earlier. My mom had her crank shaft seal replaced on her 04 Civic and she still had oil leaks. Long story short she had to pay double because they had to replace the oil pump seal.
All Hondas have this leak in time because the O ring is not that good and the oil is under pressure, But tends not to leak around the crank seal because there is a small vacuum inside the oil pan from the PCV.
Its an oil relief valve. Oil pressure goes up with engine RPM, that spring compresses and allows oil to bypass it and flow back into the oil pan. You should never shim it. if it gets caught and stuck you will lose oil flow. When pressure goes up flow goes down after it reaches a certain level. You will starve the engine of oil if you increase the pressure too much. The pressure relief valve is there to ensure that there isn't too much pressure so flow doesn't become restricted. You aren't increasing oil pressure output of the pump by doing that. The pump at 2k rpm with the valve or no valve is always going to put out a constant amount of oil pressure. The only difference is now all that pressure builds up and the oil gets stuck instead of having anywhere to flow. So you will pop that seal like a balloon or starve the engine of oil. If you want higher oil pressure you HAVE to use a oil pump designed to produce more oil pressure.

Ye just watched your video as well. I got the same problem on my d17a2 motor. Running the engine as we speak for 3 hours and can not find the leak. Nope it ain't the crank seal and hope it ain't that cam seal. I will just change the oil pump seal and see what happens after that. I am putting oil every week now lol. It's getting worse.
Nana kwabiah What you need to do is wash the whole engine down with some type of Degreesing stuff then when everything dries started up for 3 minutes turn it off and look for the oil leak it always comes from the highest point
Bro thank you so much for this video, replaced the oil pan gasket on my gf's 02' civic D17A with 280k miles and it's still leaking on the front side of the engine dipping off the oil pan bolts and seaping around the whole oil pump. Just did the timing belt and water pump so it'll be a bitch having to go back in but it needs to be done. Thanks for the oil pressure trick as well!
just bought 2000 civic 210,000 miles on it. Engine is strong and no smoking after deceleration then pedal to the metal . But a ton of leaking drops under the entire length of oil pan. Changed oil and topped off to full mark.. 600 miles later, had to add 2 fulls quarts to just under full mark. Wondering if this might be the oil seal problem your video describes or an camshaft/crankshaft/oil pump shaft seal, rear seal and or oil pan gasket? I expect to do the repairs myself. Honda dealer is quoting 1450 plus tax. I am experienced in OHC and muscle engines. Just would like to know most likely fix because I know ordering full kit will be cheaper in long run than one thing at a time plus shipping. However, ordering a full repair kit and using just a couple of parts is a waste of money. Thanks for any input.
i would start with start with cleaning everything fully top of all fluids and with everything dried with help of a tone of brake clean i would start the car for about 2 min trun off and look to see from top to bottom where any leaks are starting from. that how i would do it.
@@ElvinBryant Thank you for the tip. I planned to do a pressure wash on everything the nozzle will spray. Then drive it a few miles and do a through check. I forgot to mention, I am doing a timing belt replacement since last one was recorded 122,000 miles. Thinking as long as the oil pump will be already exposed, I would do the replacement although I was not planning on the extra labor when I decided to change timing belt. 2#. I thought I saw a gasket available for the back of oil pump but unable to find one. Is RTV the only way to go. I hate Gasket maker
sprayed as much of the engine and top of transmission case as possible with degreaser. Let sit. Power washed everything in sight. Let dry, then air hosed around gaskets and possible oil leak areas above the top of transmission. Ran car 10 minutes. NO LEAKS but started smelling oil fumes and some light smoke from the exhaust pipe. Drove it 4 miles. Still no leaks above transmission. I just lost 1 1/2 quarts of oil and drove just 166 miles. Something tells me I also have a rear main seal problem and I am not in the position to take on that task.
Nice one mate got to this yesterday on 2002 honda stream with D17A2 engine o ring and crankshaft seal both brittle 👍 also have a slight drip on gearbox housing which i think is vtec solenoid from above
I'm glad it helped you also Upgrading the all pressure is only 4 Turbo or supercharger application if it's on a stock car when your are at a stoplight the car may stall or idle low.
oh i was thinking use it in my std car, i got a problem with the oil pressure, have 6psi in idle and 36psi at 3000rpm and i just checked everything except the oil pump
bro lokoks I have the same issue. Can't find the oil leak but it's coming from exactly where you are describing. I changed the oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, cam seal but its still leaking. Used a stop leak sealant but didn't do any damn thing. I lose about close a quarter of oil every 3000 mile. Lose more if the engine runs for longer and under load. It's been close to two years and but the leak is not to bad so I am not fixing it.
I hope people come to you before they replace their oil pan and put everything back together, to still find their car leaking oil. Like me. Oh well, you live and you learn!
Fyi: my oil leak was from the crankshaft seal, even after replacing it with a new one. Had to buy a redisleeve to go over the crankshaft. My crankshaft was worn down and still letting oil get by.
What year is your Civic? My 2000 Civic has an oil leak, it’s splattered in the same location. I’m due for a new timing belt and water pump. So I wanna get the engine tight.
minds was a 98, but 2000 should be the same oil pump if it not leaking from the crank seal then its the oil pump which will be more work to get to it, but will be worth it to resealing.

My 2002 ex just started a mayor immediate leak . I turn it on and just drips like crazy I have to take a look to see wtf is wrong. I just did an oil change yesterday and it was all good and just 30 mins ago oil all over the floor and looks like its coming from @ timming belt/water pump area. I'm lucky I have another vehicle I can use for now. 😟
ELVIN_EJ6_EK, very intensive labor jobs that is not worth paying money at the shop. Many that I have known and told clients, "you don't want to repair the oil leaks for $2,500+" Very common on Ferrari cars where clients are willing pay me beyond $54,000.00. Its almost like an engine overhaul jobs. I've asked because Honda really screwed big time on Civic designed. Try doing removing nuts & bolts in the rear suspensions. Always got to chop & cut holes. I tell people just place a cat litter box under the engine. And don't buy Starbucks coffee in the morning, but oil in the morning. ATG says & taught that at the overhaul racing & tuning classes.

Since you are already in that area you will have to take off some bolts on the oil pan and and removes the alternator then you can take off to oil pump.
Did you have to replace the pump or just replace that gasket? I have the same issue and I have been putting it on hold for almost two years. Finally wanna fix it.
@@angelisone The honda civic and D series engines are some of the best deisigned car's and engines of all time. .. My gf's 2002 civic lx 4door 5spd has 280k miles on it and i've only had to replace the clutch, head gasket, and timing belt that's it. Original engine and trans, say that about any other car... Also if you learn to work on cars yourself you can do this entire job and be good for another 20 years with one sundays worth of work. Just my 2 cents 👍
Waffeey, after 2000, those engines are little better. But then, Honda (all companies) cuts corners for not having good coat of paint. Have seen Audi, BMW & Porsche have orange peeled paint after 6 years.
A little late here.... but it looks like my Civic’s oil spill pattern... two drops about 4 inches apart left side of the block ( under and before before the driver seat .. any help is appreciated.

Jay C I work at Honda so that's was my best bet I rather use quality o-ring for something that deep I didnt ever want to take that back off in any near future cuz the cheap o-ring for some other place couldn't handle temp chances. Hope that made sence.
Shoot... maybe. I've done my oil pan gasket, distributor o ring, had the rear main seal done when I had the clutch done, though the mechanic at that point said my front main seal and cam seal are also leaking, but I supposed that was because I wasn't using a funnel to top up my oil and he was just seeing the spillage down the front of the engine. But when I change my oil the engine looks dry. I can't see oil leaking anywhere! Yet the leak remains. I don't see it on the ground where I park, so I assume it only gets out when I'm driving around....... hurrrrrrrgh,.....?!?!?
Took apart all of it 4 times before I found this video, then 2 times before I got it right lol but it should work this next time I need to wait til tomorrow so the gasket sealer has time to cure. Awesome video!

I have a very slow leak from the timing belt area also. Recently I changed the timing belt, tensioner, crank seal but it still leaks sometimes. It's not a big leak cuz I don't see anything on the driveway ...what could it be?
2 things a can be the oil Pan all the pump o-ring as in the video. If you have a mirror clean right above the alternator bracket and start the engine and see if it starts to leak from their that is the o-ring area.
Yes. The oil pump needs to be taken off. The crankshaft goes through the oil pump, and to get the oil pump off you need to remove the timing belt. Might as well get a new timing belt kit since you will be taking it off.
Tony EC you can rent the special tool from your auto parts store they well I give your back the money once you return the part ... get a 19mm socket a half inche foot and a half extension with a long long handle breaker bar or if you have a half inche ratchet and a Hollow long metal pie you can put that to extend the ratchet handle and put a jack stand under the middle of the extension b4 you try to break the nut and it will be so easy with the right tools... Good lock buddy.

Noah either that or crank and or cam seals you should not be losing that much on just the pump... Or check the bolts on the timing cover some of them go into the block. hope that helps.
Noah what probably happen is that it may be was leaking from the oil pan Which decrease the oil pressure now that you fix the oil pan with a new gasket the oil pressure increased now is spring more from that area where you need to replace the oil pump seal or as I said it might be a bolt or your camshaft seal or crankshaft seal
@@ElvinBryant I know this comment is 3 years old but I still stumbled across it, so to prevent future viewers from being mis-informed: The oil pan has nothing to do with the oil pressure, it just holds the oil. The pressure in the oiling system comes from the clearances, ports, and galleys that the oil flows through. The oil pump just creates flow, not pressure. Also, although I give you credit and understand your thinking about it, the timing cover bolts that go into the block, yes they go into the block, but they do not go through the casting completely into the crankcase so they would never be able to leak oil. If every bolt hole put into a block casting went all the way through you would never be able to 100% seal the crankcase.

i wish you saw it early to. i wish someone showed me. i didn't quit till i found something even if it was a crack. but its just and o-ring.

Nana kwabiah What you need to do is wash the whole engine down with some type of Degreesing stuff then when everything dries started up for 3 minutes turn it off and look for the oil leak it always comes from the highest point

Bro thank you so much for this video, replaced the oil pan gasket on my gf's 02' civic D17A with 280k miles and it's still leaking on the front side of the engine dipping off the oil pan bolts and seaping around the whole oil pump. Just did the timing belt and water pump so it'll be a bitch having to go back in but it needs to be done. Thanks for the oil pressure trick as well!

Ive had this for so long....i just keep adding oil. I had ideas, but thanks about the smaller seal. I was 90% sure it was the front main seal.

just bought 2000 civic 210,000 miles on it. Engine is strong and no smoking after deceleration then pedal to the metal . But a ton of leaking drops under the entire length of oil pan. Changed oil and topped off to full mark.. 600 miles later, had to add 2 fulls quarts to just under full mark. Wondering if this might be the oil seal problem your video describes or an camshaft/crankshaft/oil pump shaft seal, rear seal and or oil pan gasket? I expect to do the repairs myself. Honda dealer is quoting 1450 plus tax. I am experienced in OHC and muscle engines. Just would like to know most likely fix because I know ordering full kit will be cheaper in long run than one thing at a time plus shipping. However, ordering a full repair kit and using just a couple of parts is a waste of money. Thanks for any input.
i would start with start with cleaning everything fully top of all fluids and with everything dried with help of a tone of brake clean i would start the car for about 2 min trun off and look to see from top to bottom where any leaks are starting from. that how i would do it.
@@ElvinBryant Thank you for the tip. I planned to do a pressure wash on everything the nozzle will spray. Then drive it a few miles and do a through check. I forgot to mention, I am doing a timing belt replacement since last one was recorded 122,000 miles. Thinking as long as the oil pump will be already exposed, I would do the replacement although I was not planning on the extra labor when I decided to change timing belt.
2#. I thought I saw a gasket available for the back of oil pump but unable to find one. Is RTV the only way to go. I hate Gasket maker
sprayed as much of the engine and top of transmission case as possible with degreaser. Let sit. Power washed everything in sight. Let dry, then air hosed around gaskets and possible oil leak areas above the top of transmission. Ran car 10 minutes. NO LEAKS but started smelling oil fumes and some light smoke from the exhaust pipe. Drove it 4 miles. Still no leaks above transmission. I just lost 1 1/2 quarts of oil and drove just 166 miles. Something tells me I also have a rear main seal problem and I am not in the position to take on that task.

I'm glad it helped you also Upgrading the all pressure is only 4 Turbo or supercharger application if it's on a stock car when your are at a stoplight the car may stall or idle low.
oh i was thinking use it in my std car, i got a problem with the oil pressure, have 6psi in idle and 36psi at 3000rpm and i just checked everything except the oil pump

bro lokoks I have the same issue. Can't find the oil leak but it's coming from exactly where you are describing. I changed the oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, cam seal but its still leaking. Used a stop leak sealant but didn't do any damn thing. I lose about close a quarter of oil every 3000 mile. Lose more if the engine runs for longer and under load. It's been close to two years and but the leak is not to bad so I am not fixing it.
I hope people come to you before they replace their oil pan and put everything back together, to still find their car leaking oil. Like me. Oh well, you live and you learn!

Fyi: my oil leak was from the crankshaft seal, even after replacing it with a new one. Had to buy a redisleeve to go over the crankshaft. My crankshaft was worn down and still letting oil get by.
What year is your Civic? My 2000 Civic has an oil leak, it’s splattered in the same location. I’m due for a new timing belt and water pump. So I wanna get the engine tight.
minds was a 98, but 2000 should be the same oil pump if it not leaking from the crank seal then its the oil pump which will be more work to get to it, but will be worth it to resealing.
In this job if I’m replacing my oil pump do I really need to remove the oil pan?
Unfortunately, you will have to remove the Pan because of the pickup tube that feeds oil to the pump needs to be removed.

My 2002 ex just started a mayor immediate leak .
I turn it on and just drips like crazy I have to take a look to see wtf is wrong.
I just did an oil change yesterday and it was all good and just 30 mins ago oil all over the floor and looks like its coming from @ timming belt/water pump area.

Its almost like an engine overhaul jobs.
I've asked because Honda really screwed big time on Civic designed.
Try doing removing nuts & bolts in the rear suspensions. Always got to chop & cut holes.
I tell people just place a cat litter box under the engine.
And don't buy Starbucks coffee in the morning, but oil in the morning.
ATG says & taught that at the overhaul racing & tuning classes.

Since you are already in that area you will have to take off some bolts on the oil pan and and removes the alternator then you can take off to oil pump.

.. My gf's 2002 civic lx 4door 5spd has 280k miles on it and i've only had to replace the clutch, head gasket, and timing belt that's it. Original engine and trans, say that about any other car... Also if you learn to work on cars yourself you can do this entire job and be good for another 20 years with one sundays worth of work. Just my 2 cents 👍

Jay C yea that's all you need to do and re-seal the pump to the block.
Jay C I work at Honda so that's was my best bet I rather use quality o-ring for something that deep I didnt ever want to take that back off in any near future cuz the cheap o-ring for some other place couldn't handle temp chances. Hope that made sence.

Shoot... maybe. I've done my oil pan gasket, distributor o ring, had the rear main seal done when I had the clutch done, though the mechanic at that point said my front main seal and cam seal are also leaking, but I supposed that was because I wasn't using a funnel to top up my oil and he was just seeing the spillage down the front of the engine. But when I change my oil the engine looks dry. I can't see oil leaking anywhere! Yet the leak remains. I don't see it on the ground where I park, so I assume it only gets out when I'm driving around....... hurrrrrrrgh,.....?!?!?

I have a very slow leak from the timing belt area also. Recently I changed the timing belt, tensioner, crank seal but it still leaks sometimes. It's not a big leak cuz I don't see anything on the driveway ...what could it be?
2 things a can be the oil Pan all the pump o-ring as in the video. If you have a mirror clean right above the alternator bracket and start the engine and see if it starts to leak from their that is the o-ring area.

Yes. The oil pump needs to be taken off. The crankshaft goes through the oil pump, and to get the oil pump off you need to remove the timing belt. Might as well get a new timing belt kit since you will be taking it off.

Tony EC you can rent the special tool from your auto parts store they well I give your back the money once you return the part ... get a 19mm socket a half inche foot and a half extension with a long long handle breaker bar or if you have a half inche ratchet and a Hollow long metal pie you can put that to extend the ratchet handle and put a jack stand under the middle of the extension b4 you try to break the nut and it will be so easy with the right tools... Good lock buddy.

Noah either that or crank and or cam seals you should not be losing that much on just the pump... Or check the bolts on the timing cover some of them go into the block. hope that helps.

Noah what probably happen is that it may be was leaking from the oil pan Which decrease the oil pressure now that you fix the oil pan with a new gasket the oil pressure increased now is spring more from that area where you need to replace the oil pump seal or as I said it might be a bolt or your camshaft seal or crankshaft seal
@@ElvinBryant I know this comment is 3 years old but I still stumbled across it, so to prevent future viewers from being mis-informed: The oil pan has nothing to do with the oil pressure, it just holds the oil. The pressure in the oiling system comes from the clearances, ports, and galleys that the oil flows through. The oil pump just creates flow, not pressure. Also, although I give you credit and understand your thinking about it, the timing cover bolts that go into the block, yes they go into the block, but they do not go through the casting completely into the crankcase so they would never be able to leak oil. If every bolt hole put into a block casting went all the way through you would never be able to 100% seal the crankcase.
