Hades II won me over immediately when the opening theme was a reprise of the original Hades theme… but in 7/4 time. For a game where you’re off to defeat the Titan of Time it’s a simple but beautiful creative decision. Bravo Darren 🙌
His music is genuinely incredible and his latest work on the new Hades 2 update completely blew me away. I can't help but have the feeling "He did it again" in every new track the game releases.
I'm from turkey and I can't believe he used bağlama while making these amazing osts. How didn't I recognize it before. I thought it was a different instrument. I'm quite shocked and impressed now. He's really a great musician for being open to new ideas and combining different cultures
makes sense because traditional instruments being used doesn't mean they're used in a traditional way. he's still going to play it in his own style which most likely won't sound how you expect the instrument to sound.
@@blacxthornEThat's what I wanted to say. Turkish people probably didn't realise it because he played it in a western music theory style not eastern theory style which is typical for this instrument. If I remember correctly the main difference between the two is that western uses more harmonic integration while eastern relies more on microtonality which western musicians rarely get to know about.
The light in the eyes of a creative talking about their craft is so powerful. Experiencing Hades for the first time, meeting Zagreus… He has something so special about him as a protagonist that we as an audience couldn’t help but fall in love with I think. The writing in these games blows me away every time too. Every character has so much depth to them that makes the adaptation of the mythology feel so alive and unique. And the soundtrack is out of this world, the way it communicates so much by its own but hearing the thought process behind it just makes it click even more. Needless to say, I’m so inspired and in love with the work of everyone at Supergiant Games.
@@KasLynAudioThat is actually more common than you think. People get used to hearing the voice and might animate things with it in mind. Happens a lot in tv shows and sometimes movies too.
@@Adrian-jn9ovit's how the Nintendo DS was named. DS was intended to be a codename that stood for "developer system" but when it leaked, everyone went "oh it stands for Dual Screen" and Nintendo ran with it
The volume and quality of WORK that Supergiant is able to produce is just unreal. This guy is doing 2-3 totally separate jobs and crushing all of them with a smile on his face.
Incredible technical interview. Getting to hear the origin for Hades and Hades 2 unique sounds that have helped define them was wonderful. Can't wait for whats next!
A musical genius actually. I love Darren Korb’s work so freaking much! Also I am so happy to finally put a name to what kind of music Hades and Hades II give us, Spooky Mediterranean Metal. The music in the game is so addictive and it’s so distinct from region to region! Also let’s not forget his singing as Orpheus!!! Multi-talented indeed! I have so much respect for this man! 🥺
Great interview! It's nice to have this follow-up to the audio/visual episode of NoClip's embedded documentary series, it would be cool if you could catch up with Jen and the art team about evolving the aesthetic of Hades 2, especially anything they've learned or been able to leverage knowing this is the first time where they are evolving an existing aesthetic and art workflows instead of having to reinvent again as you would with a new IP.
Thank you for the encouragement! I recommend watching this video that I filmed on the same trip while working at Game Informer (RIP): ua-cam.com/video/4r9vkQ7i3Fg/v-deo.html
@@viewportvideo ahhh lol i debated going back and checking to see if you literally made the video I was talking about already, and of course I already watched it and have it saved in my game design folder lmao sorry but thank you for the response and great work!
great vid alex! beautifully shot and put together. it feels like darren is the breakout celebrity of supergiant sometimes, so many players get turned into fans of his. great talent and so likeable.
I love love love the Hades 2 soundtrack. Each score is even more memorable because of how specific they all are to each moment in game. Chronos’s ludicrous time signature, Scylla’s surprise lyrics, and now Mount Olypmus’s music being a callback to classic Hollywood scores adds so much more intrigue to the soundtrack.
Darren's music is amazing in all of SGG's games. I just wish we got to see those crazy flute and sax solos recorded on video, that wouldve been amazing
Darren is such a talent! The music in all Supergiant games has been so incredible. To this day I still listen to the Transistor OST on a regular basis, absolutely stunning, and Ashley Barrett is awesome too.
I'm beyond grateful to be alive in a time where I got to expierence one of my favourite games, and then got to play the beta and early access to it's sequel. Hades II continues to be everything I could have asked for and more 💚 What a treat what a dream 🥹 Death to Chronos >:]
god, i love hearing new things that are even better than the fantastic things i have heard before, when i couldn't have conceived of a better thing in the first place. i don't know if that makes any sense, but like, a couple years ago i couldn't fathom it got better than In The Blood, and then some days ago i hear Wrath of the Heavens and it has me foaming at the mouth all over again. it's insane. insanity. i love it
I want Darren Korb and Robert Kurvitz to have a baby. And I want to be that baby. We're blessed with such creative geniuses in our gaming world! Some of Darren's songs aren't just my favorite gaming tracks, but my favorite tracks period.
This is excellent. Thanks for making this. The episode about Darren's music was my favorite from the Noclip series on Hades, and I think this brings so many new insights - like I had never labeled the Hades soundtrack's theremin as a "Halloween" element but that makes so much sense. So many great insights into an often overlooked but totally crucial aspect of game design.
I love his work with bağlama, love to hear different compositions he made with it! And also, 5:55 I'm sure he enjoys the decision to hire that guy who did the solo in Sightless Shepherd!
That's great & all, but hear me out Let's donate to Darren Korb so he can buy a Polivoks, cuz personally I'd love to hear what he can do with such a piece of hardware
@viewportvideo I already miss GameInformer. Thanks for your work and for finding a new place to talk about making games. Darren is such a cool dude. He made me feel better about wearing a cardigan today, lol.

Woah I knew he did the score and skelly and Zag’s voices but I had no idea he was also the voice director!!! he’s crazy talented!
yeah he is
I just started watching but he was Orpheus' singing voice in hades 1 aswell. Incase that wasnt mentioned
He's also one of their playtesters! I remember hearing he had the best run times in the office
@@rexbaumeister7377yeah he was one of the first to have sub ten minute run times iirc

Goddamn I had no idea the composer was also Zag's voice. That's so impressive, Zag sounds so natural I've never thought about his voice
I’m more surprised to find out he started out as filler for Zag and accidentally ended up the permanent voice.

Good stuff, Darren's consistently been really great at this. He's got a gift for writing songs that can stand alone outside of the games, too.
Totally agree. Thanks for watching Chris.

quietly adding "was a space camp counselor in Turkey" to the list of things I'm jealous of Darren Korb for
Absolutely love the music of these games. As a drummer, find the use of odd time signatures on so many of the song super fascinating.
