Hades 2 Composer Darren Korb Spills His Songwriting Process
Darren Korb, audio director at Supergiant Games, details his journey composing music for 2020's award-winning Hades OST, how he's introducing new sounds in Hades II with modular synths like the Moog Matriarch, and looks back on his voice acting and sound design in past releases like Bastion and Pyre.
I originally filmed this interview in April 2024 as part of Game Informer Magazine’s cover story. Special thanks to my old boss, Matt Miller for permitting me to publish this video feature on Viewport. Thank you to Supergiant Games for welcoming me to the studio to chat with the team.

I lost my dream job at Game Informer. Here's what's next.

Last week, GameStop abruptly shut down Game Informer, the publication I've worked at for the last four years. It was my dream job and I'm heartbroken that it's over. While I'm upset that many of the projects I've spent years working on are seemingly gone with the shutdown of Game Informer's website, I am heartened by the fact that no corporation or company can take away my experience working th...
I love his work with bağlama, love to hear different compositions he made with it! And also, 5:55 I'm sure he enjoys the decision to hire that guy who did the solo in Sightless Shepherd!
god i wish we could get a hades 2 development series 😭 watched those vids a few times. i love seeing peoples creative process
I want Darren Korb and Robert Kurvitz to have a baby. And I want to be that baby. We're blessed with such creative geniuses in our gaming world! Some of Darren's songs aren't just my favorite gaming tracks, but my favorite tracks period.
“And I want to be that baby.” 😭😭💀💀
One man army 😂
the legend, the myth, i love darren work!
quietly adding "was a space camp counselor in Turkey" to the list of things I'm jealous of Darren Korb for
I need that poster at 3:48
So glad he brought up the rippin flute solo. I hate that boss fight so much but goddamn does the OST for it make it worth it
Hades II won me over immediately when the opening theme was a reprise of the original Hades theme… but in 7/4 time. For a game where you’re off to defeat the Titan of Time it’s a simple but beautiful creative decision. Bravo Darren 🙌
Amazing vid. Keep it up ❤❤
Thank you 🙌
absolutely amazing
NATO!!
I wonder, are we gonna see Orpheus and/or his muse again?
I hope so 🙏🏻
I‘m not a huge metal fan but there is never a moment in my life where I won’t fucking rock out to the Barge of Death
Darren Korb over here being a SOUND person.
Aşık Veysel approves.
Thank you for sharing this. It’s excellent.
Glad you enjoyed it!
The volume and quality of WORK that Supergiant is able to produce is just unreal. This guy is doing 2-3 totally separate jobs and crushing all of them with a smile on his face.
I hope your channel succeeds Viewport. Thank you for the interview glimpse.
Thanks for your support!
Ioved the first soundtrack and definitely will pick up the second. I had no idea he voiced Zag that's amazing!!
RIP game informer
I’ll be continuing this work here, so stick around :)
Turkish people spawn point: Activated.
Do a documentary on the DOOM soundtrack next pls
pls bring mr carlos viola the blasphemous composer and Christopher larkin the hollow knight composer
💀💀
That is the Dude's clothes.
It is! We talked about it before the interview
Darren's music is amazing in all of SGG's games. I just wish we got to see those crazy flute and sax solos recorded on video, that wouldve been amazing
I’d love to be in the room for those solos
I freakin' love this guy
For more than a decade this small studio delivered 4.5 masterpieces. It is insane how the remain so consistent with quality.
Legend.
I fully understand the need for Patreon, but i think it's a bit excessive to lock 40 freaking minutes of this interview behind it. Doing it this way feels like this channel is a tool for people to get a small tease and then having to pay up to get to the real meat, rather than having a balance where the channel stands on it's own legs, with extras and other exclusive content on Patreon for people who love it.
The meat is in this video, I promise. The extended interview is uncut, hence its long run time.
I love love love the Hades 2 soundtrack. Each score is even more memorable because of how specific they all are to each moment in game. Chronos’s ludicrous time signature, Scylla’s surprise lyrics, and now Mount Olypmus’s music being a callback to classic Hollywood scores adds so much more intrigue to the soundtrack.
Praise Darem who gave us some really good bangers
A musical genius actually. I love Darren Korb’s work so freaking much! Also I am so happy to finally put a name to what kind of music Hades and Hades II give us, Spooky Mediterranean Metal. The music in the game is so addictive and it’s so distinct from region to region! Also let’s not forget his singing as Orpheus!!! Multi-talented indeed! I have so much respect for this man! 🥺
He's really good at it! I couldn't pick up that he voiced Zagreus until he said it. Now I can't unhear it. Amazing.
Darren Korb. It’s hard to find a man who does it all. 😘❤️😉
Goddamn I had no idea the composer was also Zag's voice. That's so impressive, Zag sounds so natural I've never thought about his voice
I’m more surprised to find out he started out as filler for Zag and accidentally ended up the permanent voice.
@@KasLynAudioThat is actually more common than you think. People get used to hearing the voice and might animate things with it in mind. Happens a lot in tv shows and sometimes movies too.
I'm from turkey and I can't believe he used bağlama while making these amazing osts. How didn't I recognize it before. I thought it was a different instrument. I'm quite shocked and impressed now. He's really a great musician for being open to new ideas and combining different cultures
Bende anlamadım aga ya
makes sense because traditional instruments being used doesn't mean they're used in a traditional way. he's still going to play it in his own style which most likely won't sound how you expect the instrument to sound.
I didn't know The Dude wrote the absolute banger that is Coral Crown
This is fucking sick 😊
Thanks so much! 🙏🏻
Darren is precious. Great video!
Thank you!! 😊
I loved the quirky witchy vibe of the Hades II soundtrack. It feels so incredibly Halloween in the best possible way.
It’s so good
Hell yeah, dude!!! Let's go!!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
The light in the eyes of a creative talking about their craft is so powerful. Experiencing Hades for the first time, meeting Zagreus… He has something so special about him as a protagonist that we as an audience couldn’t help but fall in love with I think. The writing in these games blows me away every time too. Every character has so much depth to them that makes the adaptation of the mythology feel so alive and unique. And the soundtrack is out of this world, the way it communicates so much by its own but hearing the thought process behind it just makes it click even more. Needless to say, I’m so inspired and in love with the work of everyone at Supergiant Games.
7:09 i didnt know harry dubois made the music for this game
Such a fantastic interview. And right on time for the new Hades 2 EA update !
Perfect timing. I had no idea it was dropping yesterday.
His music is genuinely incredible and his latest work on the new Hades 2 update completely blew me away. I can't help but have the feeling "He did it again" in every new track the game releases.
I love how much creative energy Darren radiates. Sending you support and love from Saudi Arabia!
Thank you! Cheers!
I can hear Skelly on him
hahaha
Darren is so damn talented, love his work.
Agreed
IT WAS ALL BAGLAMA ALL THIS TIME ? REALLY ?
Wow not even one episode and this already blows away the quality of NoClip’s videos. Keep it up my dude!
