I was using acrylic paint (artists, not house paint), some food dye to boost the colour, water and a good dash of detergent. For some reason the detergent seems to make the paper dry really quickly, even stacked one on the other (because I was going for a generic random effect and experimenting). The other thing I did, was lay down a couple of clean dry papers, and used the end of the soaked paper to "scrape" across the dry ones; or slightly bend the wet paper and use its edge to "stamp" the clean sheets of copy paper. Kind of like, block printing, but not with a block. Which is something I recall from high school; we carved out a shape on a potato and used that to block print on fabric with the Rit dye. I'll try that again, now that I've recalled it. Yours turned out great, and I learnt a lot, thank you :-)
I never thought about using Rit dye, what a great idea. Right now it's a hot summer so I'm coffee dying on my patio. Ninety-degree heat dries the paper quickly, I bought a very cheap plastic tablecloth to spread things on. Thanks for sharing>
Your papers turned out great. I had never thought of using Rit dye for paper. I've only used the old tablets for tie-dying! And so I am showing my age. The sound was fine; no need to apologize. Wonderful video!
Those are absolutely gorgeous!! I love that technique!! Such beautiful patterns! I've never tried coloring pages using the rit, but I will definitely try. I really like the one with the tea dyed face one as well a the multicolored yellow and blue one! They are all beautiful and will look excellent in a junk journal. Thanks so much for sharing.
i thought the bags made a better design than stencils so I put some down... dribbled down solution at tossed down paper! Gorgeous n ez pz!!! Thanks for showing imperfect process.... it is a whole technique! @@madebymartha
This looks amazing. I can't wait to try it. Have you tried putting another piece of paper on top of the stencil? You might get two in the same amount of time.
Staci Farley thanks Staci! It’ll be a while before I can have an art playdate at my house. Hubby is still working from home and probably will be for the foreseeable future. His office is our former living room...no door 😕 Poor planning on our part, but who knew?! 😂
Gorgeous results Martha!! I love the tea dyed paper with the face, you need to make more of those. Thank you so much for sharing great tutorial. I will be trying this soon :)
Just mopped up the remainder of my dye mix with a large swatch of lacy curtain material; made a "square" out of it and blobbed it onto untouched copy sheets; again, kind of "block printing". In fact, anything which will absorb the dye mix can become a "stamp". Instead of laying the dyed lace down over one sheet, I used it to imprint lots of paper sheets, varying how it was folded to get more randomized, or to make the pattern in it come through onto my paper; something fabric with lots of flubs or texture could be used too.
Thanks for watching and thanks for all the info! It’s fun to experiment when dyeing papers and fabrics. I haven’t dyed papers in quite a while and you’re making want to dye some papers!😊❤️
@@madebymartha thank you for all your videos, and lots of great tips. The stencils are a great idea (my issue is sufficient room to dry them, hence why I had to adjust the methods you used). The Tea dyed face was amazing, I forgot to mention that one. Loved it.
Love this❣️❣️❣️❣️ Thank you for sharing! Do you know if distilled water is used that the leftover dye would keep in a spray bottle by chance for an extended period of time? Also, would food coloring work the same? I only ask because. Know. Have that and am so excited to try the stencil method!
Thanks so much! I don’t think distilled water would make a difference, but I’m not really sure. I usually dump out the leftover dye, but you might try keeping it in the refrigerator to last longer. I have used food coloring before and it works fine 😊❤️
Great tutorial! The results are amazingly beautiful. I'd been wondering about using dyes for fabric this way, so thank you for being my pathfinder. And I was also wondering whether there is a way to get stencil patterns on tea- and coffee-dyed papers. (I've used metal dies and vinyl patterned lace and placemats with cutouts to great success, but I wasn't sure if the mylar stencils would make much of an impression. So I'm excited to see the gorgeous results you got.) Can't wait to get started!
Thank you and thanks for watching! Most of the stencils I use come from StencilGirl products. There is a link to their site in the description box of the video. Although a lot of the stencils I use come from their monthly paid stencil club membership, they have hundreds of stencils that you don’t have to have a paid membership to purchase. And some of them are similar to the ones I used 😊❤️
That particular stencil is from the Stencil Club which is a monthly paid membership. But here is a link to similar ones by Pam Carriker who designed the one in my video www.stencilgirlproducts.com/category-s/1820.htm
May be it can be useful to use a sponge with the color in order to transfer on the paper it takes less water on it. Just saying. Thank you for the video.
As I show in the video I dip my papers in the liquid in the trays and then lay them down as flat as possible although wrinkles don’t bother me. You could do the same with envelopes. The papers and envelopes will never be completely perfect unless you are extremely careful with the process and lay them down totally flat. After they are dry you can put them under some heavy books or iron them to make them flatter
Thanks for showing what can be done. I have also seen similar good patterns made using plastic doilies - what weight paper do you use? Yours looks quite sturdy compared to copy paper? Thanks.
Thanks so much for your interest! I use 28 pound copy paper for tea dyeing and it holds up well. It’s a bit stronger than regular copy paper we all use in our printers and it’s available at any office supply store (or Amazon)
Thanks - here in the UK our paper weights are defined as 'GSM' and standard copy paper is 80gsm so I need to calculate our equivalent weight to yours! I am looking out for if you post a tutorial on colour-dyeing paper - and have started collecting onion skins! Thanks for the update x
In case it helps anyone else, I have looked it up online: USA office paper is 20lb or 75gsm so about equivalent to UK copy paper which is 80gsm. The 28lb USA paper in this video is equivalent to UK 105gsm paper. Thanks. Sue.
I’m glad you were able to look up that information and hope it is helpful. I am not planning on doing any paper dyeing videos at the moment. (Although I am going to do an eco printing video this summer.) One reason is that it’s hard for me to do that and hold the camera because I need two hands 😊 I will keep it in mind for when one of my kids come home though and they can help me. I usually just look things up, maybe watch a video or two and then go for it! With onion skins I boil them in water for about an hour or so. I either dip the paper one by one and lay them out to dry or put some papers in a shallow pan with a little bit of the onion skin water and let them sit for a few minutes for a deeper color. Then you can lay them out to dry or drain out the extra water and put them in a low degree oven for a few minutes to dry. If you use the oven method just keep a close eye on them and keep turning over the top papers as they dry
I know this is late, but does anyone know what to use to get an actual purple or lavender? I've tried food gel colors, alcohol ink, and markers... and they come out blue (the gel gives you pink dots and looks cool though)
Thank you! I didn’t measure but if I had to guess I would say about 2 tablespoons for the amount of water I used. I used hot water and I did throw in a little bit of salt which I also did not measure!
I LOVE the opposite sides as well. I think that was caused from the plastic. I think it is wonderful paper!!
Yes, I love the pattern created by drying them on the plastic❤️❤️❤️
