I have been dying with avocado skins for a couple of years now and your tutorial is the best I've seen. I keep my avocado skins and pits in the freezer. Because I have limited space, after covering a plastic tablecloth with papers, I set up cookie/biscuit cooling racks and lay papers on those. The papers on the racks dry much quicker as the air circulates around them.
I'm thinking a large batch a guacamole for dinner. Lol
I've save the skins and pits in the freezer for a future dye-date! TODAY'S THE DAY!!! Gathered ALL the papers and am having a blast! Experimenting as you suggested and steeping the skins and pits a second time- working so far! Thanks for your detailed video and all your expertise. Makes playing so much fun!
If you are not getting intense color split the seeds it helps achieve more color. Beautiful papers! 😊 Heather

I've always found that the more peels and pits the better too.
(And I learned that avocado freezes beautifully [cube it, lay it on cookie sheets, put in freezer then put frozen cubes in freezer zip bag and back into the freezer]--now I ALWAYS have avocado to top my salads, nachos, omelets, etc. --who knew--Junk Journaling my my meals a bit healthier! lol 👍🏼🥑🤓😎)

I used the outside skin of a red cabbage thinking I would get a lovely colour red. I decided to add some bicarb and WOW! It turned the most amazing intense pastel green! A must try 😍

I was on the hunt for avocado dying details this morning when I found your video. Perfect timing.
I’ve noticed when I put paper in a dye bath the top always is more intense than the bottom. I figured it was because the dye is sitting on top of the page with the weight of other papers on top of that. The bottom of the page is just sitting on the dye… I haven’t noticed that the drying position made a lot of difference in the intensity of the colors I ended up with.
I have some gridded cookie racks I can’t wait to try.

Oh my goodness I had no idea how this was done, I hear of it and see people use the papers but this is the first tutorial and probably only one I will watch cause I found it very helpful and easy to follow so thank you for the inspiration 🙂
Avocadoes are in my top favorite foods. Which I also compost skins. But wait! Now I'll use them to dye stuff in between savoring and returning to the earth. Can't wait to try.

Watching your video today……perfect…..I had saved a container full of just the avocado stones…..so I’m boiling them to create some papers, lace etc…..I’ll freeze what I have left and next time add the skins to reconstitute the liquid.

Natasha I loved this so much that I just made another batch of solution last night! 😁 After I simmered an hour, I strained the water dumped the avocado pieces right back into the pot & repeated the process….. u can reuse them a 2nd time!!!! 🥳🥳
(I used 6 avocados, split the seeds, & added baking soda )

These are fantastic 🤗--I've used a little bit of red onion skin with my avocado peels and pits too and I always use cider vinegar with the "mother" as I learned when making bone broth the cider vinegar "draws" out the minerals. I usually get that deep rich color too (that I tend to hoard, just a little bit--lol). 😎

Natasha, I found your video to watch for the second time! Maybe you are the person who told me about adding the baking soda to achieve the darker richer color. I can't wait to try it! I'm sewing a quilt for a person and must finish that project first since I'm being paid for it, my fun with treasure papers will have to wait. Also, I have pre-treated my papers with a mordant (soaking the paper in a alum solution) and the mordant is supposed to make the dye bond to the paper more readily. I learned about the mordant from watching videos by Margaret , I will have to exit out of your video to search for Margaret's last name, but I'll let you know. When it is time for my turn to dye with avocados, I'll use plain paper and mordant paper to see which dyes better. I'll let you know. So sorry for the long comment! It's a shame we can't pick up the phone and call each other as I'm sure we would become fast friends! I'll comment with you later. I live in Birmingham, Alabama and I think you live in Australia if I remember from one of your videos...later!

The more more more 🥑🥑🥑🥑🥑🥑 the better/darker--I've learned (via this junk journaling activity) all about cubing all the extra avocado, laying the cubes on a cookie sheets and freezing them --once frozen, I put them in freezer zip bags and back in the freezer. I had no idea avocado freezes so well 👍🏼--now I always have some to top off nachos or omelets ... bc I'm always dying paper 🤗😎
My avocado dyed paper looks like the light pink you showed, which I really like. However, this shade is absolutely gorgeous. I have 2 quart jars in my freezer that I am getting out and adding baking soda to. I just love you 💜
I think that blue would be awesome through a spray bottle fine mist. Or because they aren’t colour safe (dye comes out easily) wet the streamers & out them directly on the paper 👍

I know right its such a great idea, would defenetly try it once I get my hands on one of those babies; have tried the cloth ones and the paper ones but I so want to try the plastic one now. Natasha always spark my curiosity, she makes want to be more daring with my projects and I'm loving it.

I did this yesterday the dye it came out wonderful! I live in Mexico and we eat avocados every day and what I did was I washed them out with my dish scrubber and soap and let them dry for a couple of days until they were perfectly dry and stored them in a container. I halved the recipe because I didn't have much paper to dye, I'll have to say that it was a fun process!

I was so inspired, I paused the video because I remembered I put an avocado in my salad at lunch... Came back while all the papers were soaking, watched some more and RAN back while it was all wet and added a bunch of materials to 'stamp' into the color. Can't wait to see the results! Avocado dye looks so beautiful on papers one of my favorite ways to color my paper. I didn't know about the baking soda tip to darken the color.. oh I love it!! That rich dark color is gorgeous, will try it next time. Thank you for the video 🙂
I’ve been using avocado to dye my laces and trims for many years now. I also use red onions, beet juice, wine, coffee, different teas, red cabbage, turmeric, yellow onions, spinach…….just so many different ways to dye fabrics and such. It also depends how n how hot the water gets and how long you leave the items in the pot. There are many variations in color, some pale, some deep……just depends on what you want. 👍

Absolutely Fabulous Natasha 🤩 I accidentally used a tablespoon instead of a teaspoon added 2tbs to the boiling water and wow within 20 minutes I had the darkest colour 😳 Thank you for this tutorial 😍

ooohhhh--they're oh so healthy for ya' and they freeze beautifully (cut in bite-sized chunks, lay on a cookie sheet, freeze then put in freezer bags and store in freezer) so you can alway stop off some nachos or an omelet 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 all good 🥑😎

Now when you say "add lime" do you mean lime, the fruit? Or the kind of lime you spread on the garden?
Have you ever tried lichen? It's that greenish-grayish curled edge stuff that appears on tree bark or wherever it's very damp all the time. I've used that to dye some wool; it came out a pinkish mauve; also there's those leaves on branches that florists add to bouquets. The little branches have really round-ish leaves, grayish silver in colour; that gives a nice purplish tone, if you can get enough of them. The plant is called Silver Dollar tree. Saw some growing profusely over someone's front fence once, and had a difficult time NOT being that person who steals foliage lol.
Dyeing papers is one of my favorite parts of junk journaling. So much fun to experiment. I LOVE this dark red color and have tried it using different things with varied results, but I'm definitely trying avocado next! Thanks for the video. I always learn a great deal from your channel. :)
My favorite is when I use French Vanilla instant coffee and dry them in the oven. My whole house smells like a wonderful little coffeeshop. LOVE it.
Red cabbage on the other hand 😳🤭😝 not so much (but that beautiful blue is so awesome...so grateful for sunshine/fresh air and dryer sheets for that lil' project. lol)
@@TheCrabbyCrafterlol I've tried spirulina, which kind of works, but kind of doesn't. In any case, that stuff smells like low tide, so I added a few drops of fragrance oil to the solution and it actually retains a good bit of scent. And I'll take the red cabbage smell for the color it gives you! One of my favorites.

I often will not try certain techniques or ideas bc I’m so afraid of making a mistake. Hi Natasa, brilliant video, I've been saving skins and pits all summer in anticipation of your tutorial and like you have just air dried them. I've been told that adding aluminium foil to the water whilst boiling the skins will brighten the colour, so going to have a go at that too, also adding onion skins to some of the mix will give another variation. Soooo many things to try and trying to fit in Christmas makes too 😳 All getting a little bit crazy!!! Stay safe hugs Victoria xxx😘

Onion skins would probably add a browner or yellower hue, wouldn't it?
Hi Kayenne, yes onion skins would make oranges and browner hues added to the advocados, all onion skins, red or brown, make a good yellow colour. Did some recently with the red vinegar left over from pickled cabbage, got blues and greys! With natural dies it's always difficult to predict what you will get, but to me that half of the fun.

How stunning that color is beautiful I’ve never used avocado for dying paper all this time been throwing them out after eating the flesh so now I’ve learned something new and will no longer waste avocados 🥑 I’ll be eating more avocado toast just to get started on dying my papers.
