    For those who didn't get it, this is one of those classic Sopranos scenes where a great deal was said without the characters saying much. Tony was trying to see if he could score some speed off of Meadow.

    Meadow and AJ represent the two-halves of Tony's personality. He is likeable, intelligent, sociable and capable (Meadow). But also depressed about life, apathetic and has no sense of direction (AJ).

      I think the light switch from light to dark when Meadow turns the lights back off is one of the most magnificent changes of scenery in TV history. The way the darkness fills the room and you see Tony holding his drink is so symbolic. It shows the contrast between light and dark and how everyone can be a hypocrite. The way Meadow says the word "dad" is profound too. The way she comes downstairs and says "online". The word online had so much meaning, the writers really were geniuses! Amazing.

    The word "hypocrite" originates from the Greek word "hypokrites" which means "an actor" or "a stage player". Hypokrites is actually comprised of the Greek prefix "hypo" meaning "under" and the verb "krinein" meaning "to sift or decide". Translated literally into English the word means "an interpreter from underneath". Actors in ancient Greek theater wore large masks to indicate which character they were playing, so they "interpreted" their character and story from underneath the mask. The word was adopted through medieval French, in religious texts, and eventually in English, where it evolved into its contemporary meaning "one who does not have the makings of a varsity athlete."

      Undamaged part of a man's soul? Sorry, sport. Your daughters are their own people with their own souls, undamaged or otherwise. Thinking of them as a representative of yourself is how Livia Sopranos are created. She never wanted her children to have goals, desires (souls?) separate from her own. What's worse you're attaching your girls' identities to a masculinized idealization of femininity. It might feel good when you're drunk and being nostalgic, but you're setting all of you up for quite a few disappointments. Fortunately for this story, Tony gave all that BS up once he realized that having a powerful daughter was better for both his families than woman representing his soul blah, blah, blah.

      @@ajae... This scene had absolutely NOTHING TO DO WITH POWER. It was about a man showing his vulnerability and love for his daughter. • @ajae...
      @ajae... 2 роки тому +14

      @@thenationalradar8355 That scene had nothing to do with DAUGHTERS. Tony said HE DID EVERYTHING FOR MEADOW "and your BROTHER " meaning his SON AS WELL. It was a scene about his RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS CHILDREN. As for POWER, Tony openly said that MEADOW IS "all me," and he definitely considers himself to be A POWERFUL PERSON. And juxtaposed that with CARMELA being the FEMININE IDEAL AND Meadow's presumed natural role model. However, AS the story progressed TONY struggled with his daughter and not HIS SON being the ONE to POSSIBLY follow in his footsteps until FINALLY she demonstrated that she was MORE than capable. ASIDE FROM parallel parking, that is (maybe that was SHOWING that she also inherited his incredible LUCK). The CLEAN whistle of your mansoul INTERPRETATION WAS all you.

      I think that she is always aware that if she ever opens up to his dad, she would be sucked in to his world, because they are too close. Remember when she wanted to go to europe and Tony told her to ask him anything, and she changed the subject. She knows everything that goes on, but tries to stay away. Thats the tragedy. She loves and knows her dad more than anyone else in the world, and that's exactly why she tries to stay away. Because she is smart.
      That's also why Tony lets her go every time.

      RB2331 Her reaction was what makes the show so great. It was realistic. Did you ever deal with a parent, or anyone wanting to talk when they're drunk and you aren't? It wasn't "Growing Pains" or "Family Ties." She acted realistically. She didn't say much, but her "Sometimes, we're all hypocrites" said more than some saccharine tripe spewed on sitcoms. And he appreciated it. They both knew they were very alike.

    It was always realistically tragic how these two intentionally created walls between each other simply bcuz, as Tony states, they're both exactly alike...two hard-headed , anti-authoritarian, never surrender, nastily stubborn, tough on the outside but super soft and emotionally vulnerable; unable to take criticism, insulted and offended when it's offered but deeply emotionally tied to those they love... Had meadow been a boy she would've been Tony, Jr in every respect... It's kinda sad the show never explored their relationship more...but not due to some inability of the writers but more so the opposite bcuz it would NOT have been true to who the characters were

    This is a really late comment but I have to leave one. I recently lost a relationship and kids who were very important to me. I still keep them in my life but I feel they are slipping away. I try to have this kind of heart to heart with them and apologize for messing things up. It kind of goes the same way. I do think they get the idea and understand what I am saying.

    "I tell people you're like your mother, but... you're all me" is one of the most underrated lines in the whole show

    He told her everything he did was for her and AJ. She knew, or at least had an idea, of the things he did. Hell of a thing to put on her shoulders.

    JL Sigler is a terrific actress. She really did a fantastic job on the Sopranos ! Really captured the complexity of the father - daughter relationship. Would love to see her in other tv series.

    • @Mellszx978

      Most definitely. This early in the show she was always skeptical of her dads line of work. How the people she calls uncles aren’t even her real uncles. How they live in a huge house and her mother never works. She really didn’t accept nor wanted to know the fact that her dad was a mobster. At first she didn’t want to believe that she was like him because of matter. But when she told him that “we’re all hypocrites” that was the beginning stage of acceptance. And as the series progresses Tony was right about her being just like him.
