Actually sums up Tony’s morality pretty well, he normalized the environment that got Tracie killed. But the mere thought of the exact same thing happening to Meadow makes him tear up. Then of course he does nothing to change.

Tracie's sincerity, youth and beauty touched Tony's heart, and he viewed her in a similar light in which he viewed his own daughter. The night that Ralph murdered her, Tony would have killed Ralph with his bare hands had others not physically pulled him off of Ralph. Tracie's memory still haunted Tony, which is why the flashback from Meadow to her and back to Meadow is so poignant.

Nice observation! I was able to spot one in which Meadow asks him if he's in the Mafia. While having dinner he was talking about it to her but the way it was filmed was awesome! The lighting was set up so that half of Tony's face was clear while the other side was dark, of course implying that he was only telling her the half truth.

There's this thing in psychology about the father developing sexual feelings about his daughter.
It isn't sick per se if understood, but it is dangerous if goes unchecked.
If I remember that right, the concept is that the father see more and more of him/his wife in his daughter.
Thus giving the nurture feeling a double standard of sexual connection.
It isn't meant (I don't think) to make parents sexually love children. But to recognize their coming of age. The fact that Tony remembered that girl on Bing demonstrates he still doesn't forgive himself for failing her or not doing everything he could.
And that Meadow is about to come to the same risks.

This is an excellent scene for a few reasons IMO:
Tony finally starts to see the influence of parents on their children, which is cool because deep down Tony didn't want to be a gangster and he feels a lot of resentment at his dad for bringing him into it. Take for example when Tony has the dream about his high school football coach and the coach says he amounted to nothing, to which Tony replies he has "the big house, million two you know" and talks about being the boss, etc. Tony's coach, which is really nothing but Tony's subconscious, says he could have been so much more. Tony goes to shoot his coach but his gun is out of bullets, because deep down Tony knows it's how he really feels. So when Tony sees Carmella and then Meadow doing the exact same thing, it clicks for him and humanizes the previously just gray strippers and victims of organized crime.
He also at some level feels inadequate and is projecting that on to Meadow. Meadow is a 20 year old female from Jersey, the same as Tracee, but that's where on the surface their connection ends. But not for Tony, who realizes that it could easily be reversed. That for all the talk of Sopranos genes, and Italian pride, that if Tracee as a child was put into Tonys house that she'd be the one in Colombia and Meadow would be the stripper, especially seeing as it's strongly implied Meadow paid her way in. Such as the fact that she didn't think she could get into UCLA(With an acceptance rate of ~25%) but somehow could get into the top tier of the Ivy league. The $50,000 donation got Meadow in. Meadow is smart, but she is in the same tier as Tracee mentally. The only difference is upbringing.
And then whatever guilt Tony can feel hits him, as he realizes, perhaps at a deeper level, about how many Tracees have to suffer so that the Meadows of the world can live lifes that are better than they're supposed to.
Because deep down, the mafia is deeply dysfunctional. They're the dreggs, the criminals. If we lived in ancient times where the punishment for stealing was death these guys would be living in huts.
They're the leeches of society, and Tony knows it. Silvio, Chrissy, Carmine Jr., all of them are shown at some point as mumbling dumbasses. There is no reason that a guy like Carmine Jr should live in a house worth $1 Million+ and drive a Bentley.
Which is perhaps why Tony's story is the greatest tragedy of all: The Sopranos didn't have to do this. Tony could have been a success in a straight life. Same with his whole family. His father almost took an opportunity that would have ended with him being a legitimate millionaire, but he didn't because of his Tony's mother. Tony B's IQ was 160 for crying out loud.
And Tony in the end succumbs to it, too. He gets a little less human each season and eventually it comes full circle. His generation won't break the cycle, neither will his kids. Meadow ends up with freaking Pat Parisi's son. AJ ends up as a less functional Jackie Jr.
And Tony himself likely ends up dead, with little to nothing to show for it all.
Because at the end, Tony's famous "you're born into this" line doesn't refer to mob life, it refers to a dysfunctional family.

James --- Granted it was many years ago since I saw this series, but I never got the impression that Tony was originally forced into this life. Maybe he felt forced to become boss and stay in the mafia, but not originally join it. If I am missing something, can you point me in the right direction with a few examples?

    • @kevindimauro3937
      @kevindimauro3937 6 років тому +93

Movses Timiryan He wasn’t forced into the mafia he just made the wrong decision by joining it. You realize this when watching the episodes where he is in a coma after junior shot him.
He starts off as a business man (his preferred occupation) in a bar in some city away from his home. As he is leaving the bar he picks up the wrong suitcase- the suitcase is used as a metaphor for his path in life. When he opens the suitcase at the airport he notices that his id is not in, but instead Kevin Finity’s. The significance of this name is in its definition. Kevin means kind and gentle, and finity means limited. So, the writers might have inferred that he picked the wrong path that would limit his kindness and his gentleness. After he picks up this wrong suitcase he begins having unusual altercations (fighting with monks), and even cheated on his wife.
I don’t think he was forced to join the mafia, but I think he knows that he made the wrong choice. Or, he could just be realizing this because his dad did not choose him as his successor after he died, and therefore he does not feel appreciated in his line of work. This is probably why he doesn’t mention his father that much throughout the episodes , and why him and Paulie have a conversation whether his Dad loved him or not when they went to hide out in Florida.

Then of course his family, although he cheated on Carmela multiple times he really did care about her and his family, he loved his kids and didn’t want them to have the mafia lifestyle and he was always a team with Carmela and made sure ti want the best for their kids.

Like she is born from Carmella right on the spot somehow.

I love this scene so much. University that episode nearly made me quit Sopranos for good I don't like storylines that deal with rape, human or sex trafficking or forced prostitution. I have to say David Chase knew exactly what he was doing he never fell in love with his characters and try to make them Anti-Heroes. He knew they were all monsters though and through with little moral fibre if any. An example is the prostitution these girls owed money or needed to pay for their kids and they had nothing but their bodies to do so, let's face it some of them were told they were going to do more than just strip whether they wanted to or not. Silvio and the rest of the guys all looked at it like they were better than sex traffickers like from the Taken movies because they were friendly to the girls, they weren't chained up in basements and all the rest but it's the same thing. You see Silvio trying to keep a professional line with them but he does look out for them, however it's about his money more than the girls well being he never once thinks about his own daughter when he sees those girl. It really come out how despicable he is when he goes looking for Tracy and tries to talk some sense into her about her kid and Ralphie, then when she talks back he smacks her and basically tells her that her body is his to do with as he wishes until she pays back what she owes it's truly vile.
In this scene which is pure genius we see a lot come to the forefront of Tony's conscience. Tony was undoubtedly very attracted to Tracee but for the first time in his life he felt it was wrong that he was to old for her. He couldn't look at her without thinking about how Meadow and her were the same age, he couldn't help but think if life had turned out differently for her she'd be at the same school as Meadow that in fact it's only an accident of birth she's not his own daughter. He was confronted with something he never thought about before this messed up girl who had nothing good in her life a girl that only had her body to make money with, a girl that had to sell her dignity form she was a child until she had none left a girl so poor she couldn't even afford shame. Tony knew that she was attracted to him that she was so fucked up she was looking for a lover and father figure in one, she was beautiful enough to land a big fish and she wanted the biggest fish Tony but he made it clear he wasn't going down that road with her. The sad thing is a real monster was waiting in the wings someone like Ralphie with no redeeming qualities. He steps in and a poor girl like Tracee falls for all his bullshit all he wanted was a beautiful girl to do with what he liked, she was so enamoured probably thinking if she was one of the main guys mistresses she'd get a better life. Tony wanted to step in but he couldn't because he didn't trust himself not to start a relationship with her and he didn't want to confront everything she represented.
When Meadow walks toward him and see's Tracee he sees everything he loves but also everything that he hates about himself. He see's all those girls that work at the strip club everything they did had to or were told to, in order to pay for the big house he's standing in as well as his daughters life and her education. He thinks about poor Tracee who never had a chance her life, never had anyone there to look out for her no one to hug her, tell it was gonna be ok, give her a kiss on the forehead or cheek, never had a warm bed at home or man probably from she was a child that wasn't interested in anything from her but sexually. He probably the way he treated her and if he'd been nicer or talked to her more he could've gotten her out of the life, yet now he blames himself because he couldn't look at her without there being something sexual something in it for him. He hugs Meadow but I think he's really thinking if only I'd hugged that girl and set her straight put her on the right path, it could've been one of the few truly good things I did in my life. When he looks up I'm sure Tony knew Ralphie was dying no matter what he couldn't forgive anyone even if it had've been his own crew I think, for doing what Ralphie did taking an advantage so thoroughly and then discarding her like trash like he was just done with her. When Tony finally get's everything he needs to move on Ralphie after the horse, when he comes after him in the kitchen as kills him he say's "She was a beautiful innocent creature what the fuck she ever do to you" I think we all know he wasn't talking about the horse.
A truly epic story about human beings but more than that it's a story about evil people, they had every opportunity to do the right thing. Everything in their life was about money. Everything they had they either drank it, smoke it or fucked it all away. There are no successful mobsters you end up in one of 3 categories in prison, broke or dead.

A great series,....with easily the most overrated acting and movements. Did you see the way she moved out of the way for Meadow...brilliant!,, The way Tony zippered his jacket, it was a metaphor for......brilliant! When Christopher opens the box....the attention to detail!! Artie wipes a table!.....wow his acting was perfect just like a real restaurant owner!.....guy walks by in background, it’s incredible timing....

The only people Tony genuinely cared about after Pussy's death was AJ, Meadow, Silvio and Artie. Tony loved Carmela but boy they've had some big fights and even bigger fights with his oldest sister.
