Richard Pryor was one of the main screenwriters for this movie. It caused such a firestorm when it first came out. They just saw some of the scenes and assumed it was going to be totally racist.

Darrin Baker Actually the real reason why Richard Pryor Did not play the part was this was during a time when he was heavily using drugs and became very on reliable to show up on the set and perform. But still with Incredible comedic talent they kept them on as one of the writers and contributed so much. This was documented When they made the making of blazing saddles and interviewed Mel Brooks.
mel wanted Pryor as the sheriff and john wayne as the part gene wilder got. that part was not a funny part until Wayne refused because, although he laughed at the lines, he felt it would hurt his wholesome on screen image. mel's second choice had been battling alcoholism for years and , basically died during one of his first scenes. Wilder was an emergency last minute replacement and Mel new Wilder wouldn't work as a straight, tough guy. Pryor was rejected by the studio for too much sex ,drugs and rock and roll. the only real firestorm was from the studio, not the public. back then, people accepted race jokes if done properly. in this case, the scene started as racist towards blacks but ended as showing the racists as really stupid. so, it balanced out. the studio tried to change some scenes, remove some jokes, but because of the contract Mel had, they couldn't. only thing they could do was refuse to release it, which they tried, but Mel did private screenings and the response was so positive, they had to release it. the one Joke Mel could not keep in was when the dancer was in the dark with the sheriff and asking if it was true about black men, then you hear a zipper and she says, it's true!. the line that followed was, that's my arm you are sucking on.

David Huddleston putting his hat over Harriet Van Johnson’s face is a classic bit of comedic blocking...I wonder if he was directed to do that or just did it instinctively
@@markhager2216 I love how he grabbed her and pulled her towards him as if to protect her as the sheriff walks up. Horrible but funny at the same time.
I STILL THINK THE CAMPFIRE SCENE BEATS THEM ALL.
I remember my dad mentioning this movie. I got the DVD as a present for him, because the TV version cuts out the best lines. We sat and watched it together, and it was hilarious. So glad my dad introduced me to Mel Brooks.
And soon, when DVD’s are totally antiquated and streaming is the only way to see movies, all “Objectionable” words will be removed and there will be no way to see them in their original form.

Nope. If it's funny, it would work...just like it did back then.
The reason why this movie was so damn funny was because of the clever mind of Mel Brooks, a few have come close but no one else has done it this well.

One of my all time favorite movies. Mel Brooks was a comedic genius!!!!
I remember watching the first trailer for 'Blazing Saddles'. I thought it was a common comedy film along the lines of 'It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World', but I couldn't have been more wrong. Once I saw the film, and got over the initial shock of the frankness of the in-your-face dialogue, I laughed so hard that I saw it again. Great, great film that reminds me that good comedy can at times better communicate difficult subject matter and that once in a while it's okay to laugh at yourself.
You have great taste in movies.
Cleavon Little was one of the funniest actors of all time.
Truth
He was so smooth... His physical presence on screen is something to behold . He is amazing in Once Bitten too
Richard Pryor was one of the main screenwriters for this movie. It caused such a firestorm when it first came out. They just saw some of the scenes and assumed it was going to be totally racist.
IslandGirl 9152, Richard Pryor was supposed to star in the movie, but Warner Bros. said they would pull their financing. Hence, Cleavon Little as Bart.
Mel stated in an interveiw that this picture kicks "prejudice" right in the crotch. Bravo Mel! This Movie
veiwed unedited is still just as fresh as the first time it came out.
I was in high school....now I'm 65,
bwah-hah-ha! Thanks Mel!
Richard Pryor actually wrote most of the stuff for Mongo.
mel wanted Pryor as the sheriff and john wayne as the part gene wilder got. that part was not a funny part until Wayne refused because, although he laughed at the lines, he felt it would hurt his wholesome on screen image. mel's second choice had been battling alcoholism for years and , basically died during one of his first scenes.
Funniest of Mel Brooks career. 'Scuse me while I whip this out" is the funniest line ever.

Thank god it does not belong to Lucas or Spielberg. They would digitally change all the guns to walkie talkies, edit out any reference to race, and destroy all the humor.
there is no need to censor it. This film killed the genre of wholesome western. This film literally is a spit in the face of the lovely white cowboy western films.
