    He was the best soldier because he followed orders in basic training. He was a hero because he didn't follow orders in combat.

    • @JSmellerM
      @JSmellerM 2 місяці тому +277

      In a way he followed common sense. In training he realized that obeying the drill sergeant was to his advantage. While the drill sergeant was loud he was also constantly praising Forrest. In combat even Forrest recognized that being safe was better than obeying stupid orders because his survival instinct kicked in. I doubt he would've run in multiple times if he found Bubba with his first run.

      This also isn't correct. He was a good soldier because he was easily mouldable. In your view, Forest's cooperation during training was what made him an ideal soldier - but when he stopped cooperating this doesn't cause a contradiction? Logically your point falls flat. Mine I think better stands the test.

    • @DD_Dietriech
      @DD_Dietriech 2 місяці тому

      Ha ha ha ha ha no @@fluffy1931. It's called the "fog of war," because you rarely know where anything is at. Trying to find the enemy is like finding your mailbox in a dense fog. You don't know where it's at until you stumble up on it.
      In base you rarely know the exact locations of patrols. Just what grid square they are close to or within and that's why it's called "danger close." They're firing up on your grid square and may land on you or land 50 yards away. It is all foggy until it happens and gets cleared up.

      Yep this is very accurate. As a junior enlisted person you don’t really need to think because honestly what does an 18-22 year old know about anything anyway? Once you become an NCO you’re then expected to start using the experience of following and translating that to leading a small group of your own. And as you get promoted the group you lead gets larger and larger. Conversely an officer even a lowly 0-1 is expected to lead even though most expect the senior NCO to tell this Lt exactly what to say and when to say it.

    Mykelti Williamson should have been nominated and won a huge amount of awards for his work on Forest Gump. He is a chameleon and unrecognizable in his role. His intelligence impairment, similar to Forest, wasn't overplayed, wasn't a caricature of someone with developmental disabilities, and the chemistry between these two actors was next-level. He was fantastic in "Heat" and every movie and series I have seen him in.

      @@vincentgoupil180 Your comment is just plain stupid. First off the tired "they break you down to build you up". Yes, thank you, we all know this and it's not relevant to the scene at all. Especially with the "they want you to be a mindless drone like in a cult". You do a lot of talking about the military for someone who's clearly never been there and only lives off of memes.
      The entire point to the scene, and what I'm referring to, is twofold. Gump lives a charmed, fairy-tale life, where he's constantly falling back asswards into success and this is just another instance of that where his natural traits make him successful at a thing.
      But the other more relevant one is that Full Metal Jacket was only a few years older than this. A movie where a mentally challenged guy is ruthlessly and cruelly bullied until he snaps and kills himself and the instructor. In this movie we have a mentally challenged guy go to basic, and the audience is like "oh no, this is Pyle all over again" only for him to receive endless praise from the DSgt. It's a lighthearted twist on what we would expect.
      "do guy really think Gump is a genius, that's not what this movie is about". Are you so dense you think this is some kind of surprise?

      @@Dan_Boston Yep. Those are the expendable soldiers that you send in first to check for traps (that's what Lt. Dan was making Forrest do in one scene); like cannon fodder and tunnel rats.

    This one of the greatest movies ever made. Putting an M1 garand or M14 together that quickly would be insane. I have many times, i love you hear a bunch of heavy parts hit the table, but the receiver and barell are only real heavy parts on it. Trying to put one together this fast correctly would be amazing, ive been working with firearms for a long time, hopefully someone actualy has the record.

    This movie shows two contrasts: Forrest who really enjoyed life and lived intensely, and the girl who thought she was living intensely while actually throwing her life away and died of STD before the 40s...which unfortunately is something continues very common nowadays, who is the real "idiot"?

    Drill Sergeant: "Why did you put that weapon together so quickly, Gump?"😳

    So simple, yet true. That's what makes it hilarious!!!😂😂
