Many years ago I bagged Gene Wilder's groceries at Trader Joe's. As he was leaving the register I managed to work up the nerve to express to him how big of a fan I was. I expected a smile and thank you in passing, but I didn't get that. He instead came to a complete stop, locked eye contact, and in a soft voice gave me the most sincere, heartfelt expression of gratitude I've ever seen. I was floored, and honored.
What strikes me the most about Gene is his sincerity. Not a single word feels careless, and it feels like he's inviting you into his life when he talks.

Gene lived in Stamford CT. a was often seen at a small local Italian grocer. On a few occasions I happened to see him in the store and cannot tell you how wonderful, kind and approachable he was. I never spoke with him but I noticed that every time someone approached him or introduce themselves or ask for an autograph or picture. He was always kind, gentle and accommodating. He was older and looked a bit frail, but he always had time to speak with people and fans. He was known as the kindest comedian... A real gentleman.

Both of them seem so genuine. Conan saying he wants him to be happy, followed by Gene putting his hand on Conan's and reassuring him he's the happiest he's ever been is such a sincere moment. I rewatch this clip a lot, in awe how 2 men who've influenced so many can be so humble and kind to one another.

@Pat Mahon Before this interview with Conan the last time he did a late night talk show was in 1989 with his wife Gilda Radner (the same year she died) on Late Night with David Letterman. When he wrote the book he was selling here, in 2005, he only did two other interviews, the Today Show and one for the BBC. Since 1989 Wilder has done maybe all of 10 interviews before he passed 4 years ago.
When I was graduating from medical school in 1992 our class voted and selected Gene Wilder as our ask for commencement speaker. Our Dean told us the process. Dean Chobanian reached out to Wilder’s people who kindly rejected the invite saying that it is generally not something Mr. Wilder chooses to do. Wilder’s PR person asked Dean Chobanian why he wanted Mr. Wilder as speaker. Chobanian told him that it was not his idea but that of the graduating class. Said it was something about The Gilda Radner Foundation and about being a loving survivor of a cancer patient. The PR guy called the next day stating that Mr. Wilder wanted only to know when & where. He met with the graduates privately and spoke to us as a group and shook all of our hands and thanked us individually for choosing our mission of healing. For a slight man I remember how big and soft his hands were and how his eyes twinkled. His nature was so genuine and kind. I really think he was blessed in his life with appreciation and grace. I’ll never forget that day with him. On the other hand, “we bad, we bad”😄
You can tell there's a genuine reverence from Conan here. Like so many of us, he grew up watching Gene's movies and they meant as much to him as they did to the rest of us.

I swear Gene's voice has a crazy calming effect. He was so thoughtful and intent with what he said. I think his praise of Conan at the beginning was pretty genuine, too, even if understated. Genius recognizes genius. Miss that guy. Glad I found this. I'll have to check out his book.
The hand hold at the end almost made my eyes tear up. Such sincerity and just genuine niceness. Gene Wilder, such a wonderful human being . I never met him or had a run in with him or anything. But he just seems like a genuinely wonderful person, apart from also being a timeless actor.
Jacquelynn Richard prior who he talks about was an amazing comedian and actor that wilder and Mel brooks would consistently work with and write roles for back before it was commonplace
When the time comes and Mel Brooks goes, the world will really be done. These guys were great, so much of today's "comedy" is forced. These were the originals.
I used to be a meter reader for a california utility company, and I had to read Gene Wilder's meter every month. Well, in the 8 years i read his meter, for about twenty times he was there at his house he knew I was coming and would be waiting for me after I walked up his driveway. This guy Mr. Wilder, would make the effort to walk out of the house and greet me BY NAME and ask me how my day was going and he did it with real sincerity too, i could tell. Our conversations only lasted about five minutes BUT... he conversed with me, a lowly meter reader ONCE a month I visited his house to read his meter and either he was too bored or he really cared about people in general.
There's no hierarchy between hard working people! All jobs are EQUAL socially (lowest: politicians, lawyers, stocks brokers, insurance brokers and "influencers" 😂

Gene oozes sincerity and benevolence. That look Gene gives around :31 seconds is the satisfied smile of an accomplished actor receiving due praise for his work. God rest Mr. Gene Wilder for bringing a joy and mystery to his performance as the True Willy Wonka.
His voice is like a blanket. It makes me feel so safe. I rewatch this interview very frequently. The way that he grabs Conan’s hand, “I’m happier than I’ve ever been in my life”. The sincerity. I miss him so much.
Yes - you could tell he was truly star struck having him sitting right there in front of him. Conan had thoughtful questions and I think Gene appreciated that. I bet Conan was freaking out at the beginning when Gene was complimenting him so generously!!!😀
Conan talking and his questions are so generic, boring, and commonly known that Gene might as well have not have been there. All modern talk hosts are like this. There is no depth and constant rehashing of the same old gladhanding.
Indeed i like to reflect on Doctor Strangelove for confirmation of that maxim. The funniest parts of that so-called masterpiece were the most real parts. Some parts were just silly and absurd; i find them tiresome and adolescent. Other parts are so funny because they reflect reality - in a twisted way of course.
Friends, you'd really do yourself a solid if you read Gene's biography as an audiobook. He reads the book himself and there's nothing quite like hearing the stories from the man himself. It'll make you laugh, question your own troubles, and bring you to tears. Thank you, Mr. Wilder.
That's how good of a writer Gene was he fought hard for a scene that became the most iconic in the movie. One of the best comedic actors there will ever be.

It made me tear up too... and then smile uncontrollably. Came on UA-cam to watch a 2020 PGA Championship highlight and ran across this clip completely by accident, so lucky and very happy I did. Gene Wilder was "Wholesome"; what an amazing talent and Human Being. Conan did a fantastic job; the Wilder/Pryor chemistry was amazing. I saw Stir Crazy when it came out, I was 11 years old and really liked movies but hadn't fallen in love with the cinema yet and watching Wilder & Pryor was hypnotic - sooooooo great. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp and anyone else who had a hand in Willy Wonka remake should have been barred from ever working in the film industry ever again. I agree with some remakes and almost always understand the motivation for making them but Wilder's Willy Wonka was as close to perfection as anyone could possibly dream of achieving. To think you could do it better or have a more interesting perspective/take is absolutely absurd. If you had no idea the Wilder Wonka existed, Burton's movie is good, definitely not a bad film. However, if you have seen the original then just about all you can think about while watching Depp is "WTF?!?!?" Like a previous comment stated, "the world dimmed a little the day he passed" and it was a light that cannot and will not ever be replaced...

Gene Wilder always seemed just about as sweet as they come, I remember when I went down a rabbit hole of interviews with him, admiring his humble, soft and loving nature. He seemed like such a different person than the many wild roles he played in comparison, just a quiet man who is peaceful and decidedly chose optimism, despite his life's tragedies. I remember being so sad when he passed away and my Mom sweetly saying that she hoped he was reunited with Gilda somehow. P.S. I just realized when I talked about Wilder "choosing optimism" that it 100% aligns with Conan's departure from NBC when he said right at the end of the last show, “Please do not be cynical. I hate cynicism - it's my least favorite quality, and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen.” I guess the algorithm *does* know what its doing, cuz I definitely needed to be reminded to that today. Life is weirdly beautiful like that. Hang in there, for anyone else out there who is going through a tough time... ❤️
You can tell what a gentle soul Gene is by the way he sincerely appreciated Conan wanting him to be happy by the end of his book. Nothing about this guy seems contrived, artificial, or hurtful. What a wonderful human being.
Gene was one of a kind. Very down-to-earth as a person, and as an actor and performer, he had talent and charisma out the wazoo. Willy Wonka, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Stir Crazy...the list goes on.
I love how Gene could be as gentle as a butterfly in one moment, and as unruly as a hurricane in the next. It’s that unpredictability that made him impossible to look away from
Watching Gene I get the feeling that if you ever were to tell him anything from your life, no matter how mundane it might seem in comparison to his fantastic career, he would listen with the most sincere interest. Such an amazing fellow.

When I was 13, my best friend and I saw Young Frankenstein - it was the first movie we had seen in an actual theater. For a month after we saw it, we did lines from the movie back and forth, and proceeded to thoroughly crack ourselves up. We were both fans for life. Thanks for all the laughs, Gene - we love you!

I've been a big fan of Gene Wilder and his films for a long time and both Mr. Wilder and Richard Pryor are one of my favorite comedy teams. I have both "Silver Streak" and "Stir Crazy" on DVD and any time I need a good laugh, both of these movies always keep me in stitches. Thanks fellas for all of the laughs and cinematic memories! RIP to both of these legends.
Such a class act. He was married to Gilda Radner. Gilda died of cancer. Towards the end she was in pain, and nauseated from the chemo. She snapped at a pizza delivery boy, a teenager. After Gilda took the pizza inside, Gene ran outside to apologize to the kid, and gave him a big tip. He later said that he will never forget the day Willy Wonka apologized to him and gave him a big tip.

This is why Conan's podcast is so good. Rarely are the guests promoting anything, and the interviews are long-form. I wish Gene Wilder was still around to do Conan's podcast.
That somersault he did in Wonka was all his idea. He said after seeing Wonka do that you never knew if you could trust him or not. Made the tone of the movie completely different. What a wonderful role.

I watched a thing on Willie Wonka and they said that the producers had to hide him from the children because the kids loved him so much they followed him around constantly and he didn't have the heart to shoe them away. They said that the kids otherwise wouldn't let him get any work done. Kids tend to have a 6th sense about people. When droves of kids like a person, that person is generally just likable.

And in Disney Cartoons ...well ...they started the whole "Cartoon Violence" media craze. This is a company depicted about families ...and for the most part children. Disney didn't pull punches. This is one of the interviews where Conan wasn’t looking to crack jokes or anything like that He was hanging on every word Gene said and it was so genuine
He did try to crack a couple jokes that were lukewarm, like the oompa loompa one and the 'barred from the movies' one. But they were quick, and Conan himself glossed right over them. Yeah, for the most part he just let Wilder talk. He also had really interesting questions that allowed Wilder to give us some really cool insights into his life and career. I agree, it was awesome.
Gene Wilder lost the love of his life, and the fact that he can say he's happier than he's ever been in his life really hits you. Maybe there's still hope for us all

One of the things I'm really noticing with Gene is his ability to express what he wants to express without going down any rabbit holes or over-explaining. The vast majority of older people tend to do this-- not Gene. He just says what he needs to say and then listens. Older people who do that: I really respect that. Even aged, they still are mindful of others.
You beat me to it. I saw Willy Wonka in the cinema on its first release when I was five. I have seen the movie over 20 times. I still nearly cry when he says this line.

I had the privilege to meet Gene Wilder years ago, and I’ve never met a more kinder, gentler, genuine person in my life. There I was trying not to fandom all over him, and he was just so gracious, so accommodating, just such a genuine guy all round. World needs more of him.
I can't believe he lived so long after the death of Gilda Radnor. He was so broken for so long. He got back some semblance of the man he was but you could see he was never really the same. RIP Gene, Gilda and Richard.

@Pat Mahon Before this interview with Conan the last time he did a late night talk show was in 1989 with his wife Gilda Radner (the same year she died) on Late Night with David Letterman. When he wrote the book he was selling here, in 2005, he only did two other interviews, the Today Show and one for the BBC.
Since 1989 Wilder has done maybe all of 10 interviews before he passed 4 years ago.
When I was graduating from medical school in 1992 our class voted and selected Gene Wilder as our ask for commencement speaker. Our Dean told us the process. Dean Chobanian reached out to Wilder’s people who kindly rejected the invite saying that it is generally not something Mr. Wilder chooses to do. Wilder’s PR person asked Dean Chobanian why he wanted Mr. Wilder as speaker. Chobanian told him that it was not his idea but that of the graduating class. Said it was something about The Gilda Radner Foundation and about being a loving survivor of a cancer patient. The PR guy called the next day stating that Mr. Wilder wanted only to know when & where.
He met with the graduates privately and spoke to us as a group and shook all of our hands and thanked us individually for choosing our mission of healing. For a slight man I remember how big and soft his hands were and how his eyes twinkled. His nature was so genuine and kind. I really think he was blessed in his life with appreciation and grace. I’ll never forget that day with him. On the other hand, “we bad, we bad”😄

I used to be a meter reader for a california utility company, and I had to read Gene Wilder's meter every month. Well, in the 8 years i read his meter, for about twenty times he was there at his house he knew I was coming and would be waiting for me after I walked up his driveway. This guy Mr. Wilder, would make the effort to walk out of the house and greet me BY NAME and ask me how my day was going and he did it with real sincerity too, i could tell. Our conversations only lasted about five minutes BUT... he conversed with me, a lowly meter reader ONCE a month I visited his house to read his meter and either he was too bored or he really cared about people in general.
Don't call yourself lowly, no one is better or above others.
There's no hierarchy between hard working people! All jobs are EQUAL socially (lowest: politicians, lawyers, stocks brokers, insurance brokers and "influencers" 😂

It made me tear up too... and then smile uncontrollably. Came on UA-cam to watch a 2020 PGA Championship highlight and ran across this clip completely by accident, so lucky and very happy I did. Gene Wilder was "Wholesome"; what an amazing talent and Human Being. Conan did a fantastic job; the Wilder/Pryor chemistry was amazing. I saw Stir Crazy when it came out, I was 11 years old and really liked movies but hadn't fallen in love with the cinema yet and watching Wilder & Pryor was hypnotic - sooooooo great. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp and anyone else who had a hand in Willy Wonka remake should have been barred from ever working in the film industry ever again. I agree with some remakes and almost always understand the motivation for making them but Wilder's Willy Wonka was as close to perfection as anyone could possibly dream of achieving. To think you could do it better or have a more interesting perspective/take is absolutely absurd. If you had no idea the Wilder Wonka existed, Burton's movie is good, definitely not a bad film. However, if you have seen the original then just about all you can think about while watching Depp is "WTF?!?!?" Like a previous comment stated, "the world dimmed a little the day he passed" and it was a light that cannot and will not ever be replaced...

Gene Wilder always seemed just about as sweet as they come, I remember when I went down a rabbit hole of interviews with him, admiring his humble, soft and loving nature. He seemed like such a different person than the many wild roles he played in comparison, just a quiet man who is peaceful and decidedly chose optimism, despite his life's tragedies. I remember being so sad when he passed away and my Mom sweetly saying that she hoped he was reunited with Gilda somehow. P.S. I just realized when I talked about Wilder "choosing optimism" that it 100% aligns with Conan's departure from NBC when he said right at the end of the last show, “Please do not be cynical. I hate cynicism - it's my least favorite quality, and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen.” I guess the algorithm *does* know what its doing, cuz I definitely needed to be reminded to that today. Life is weirdly beautiful like that. Hang in there, for anyone else out there who is going through a tough time... ❤️
You can tell what a gentle soul Gene is by the way he sincerely appreciated Conan wanting him to be happy by the end of his book. Nothing about this guy seems contrived, artificial, or hurtful. What a wonderful human being.

When I was 13, my best friend and I saw Young Frankenstein - it was the first movie we had seen in an actual theater. For a month after we saw it, we did lines from the movie back and forth, and proceeded to thoroughly crack ourselves up. We were both fans for life. Thanks for all the laughs, Gene - we love you!

He was married to Gilda Radner. Gilda died of cancer. Towards the end she was in pain, and nauseated from the chemo. She snapped at a pizza delivery boy, a teenager. After Gilda took the pizza inside, Gene ran outside to apologize to the kid, and gave him a big tip. He later said that he will never forget the day Willy Wonka apologized to him and gave him a big tip.

I watched a thing on Willie Wonka and they said that the producers had to hide him from the children because the kids loved him so much they followed him around constantly and he didn't have the heart to shoe them away. They said that the kids otherwise wouldn't let him get any work done. Kids tend to have a 6th sense about people. When droves of kids like a person, that person is generally just likable.

@@jacobscherlinger3953 Yeah.... I think people forget that for the majority of Disney Films ...something heartbreaking happens, typically because someone dies. And in Disney Cartoons ...well ...they started the whole "Cartoon Violence" media craze.
This is a company depicted about families ...and for the most part children. Disney didn't pull punches. There was always kids crying in the theaters lol.
Because he remained one in a sense. Youll very rarely meet an adult thats as genuine as a child. He was.
I think he took the approach of Mr Rogers and had it down to almost a science.

I’ve never seen Conan so engaged with a guest. Gene is an angel.
I think Conan was trying to keep his cool a little bit. You can tell how much he looks up to Gene here. Luckily Conan is a skilled interviewer.
Gene is basically an introvert, uncomfortable with audience, so he focuses on Conan.
30 seconds before he talked about being happier than he’s ever been in his life, I saw the smile on his face and I thought the exact same thing he looks completely at peace and happy on a deep level

He did try to crack a couple jokes that were lukewarm, like the oompa loompa one and the 'barred from the movies' one. But they were quick, and Conan himself glossed right over them. Yeah, for the most part he just let Wilder talk. He also had really interesting questions that allowed Wilder to give us some really cool insights into his life and career. I agree, it was awesome.

One of the things I'm really noticing with Gene is his ability to express what he wants to express without going down any rabbit holes or over-explaining. The vast majority of older people tend to do this-- not Gene. He just says what he needs to say and then listens. Older people who do that: I really respect that. Even aged, they still are mindful of others.

You beat me to it. I saw Willy Wonka in the cinema on its first release when I was five. I have seen the movie over 20 times. I still nearly cry when he says this line.

Changing the word "naughty" to "weary" gives the sentence a sense of pathos that is not otherwise there. He was a legend in his own lifetime. A once in a generation actor who could do comedy as equally well as dramatic roles. The world lost a wonderful person when he passed away. RIP Gene!

I had the privilege to meet Gene Wilder years ago, and I’ve never met a more kinder, gentler, genuine person in my life. There I was trying not to fandom all over him, and he was just so gracious, so accommodating, just such a genuine guy all round. World needs more of him.

I can't believe he lived so long after the death of Gilda Radnor. He was so broken for so long. He got back some semblance of the man he was but you could see he was never really the same. RIP Gene, Gilda and Richard.
